The date shows 8/7/2019 because this is from a VERY old Patreon vid guys FYI. Enjoy!
Hope both of y’all doin well, glad to see you have a great ass fan base
A Forest is the grooviest by them & their live extended version is what you need to listen to
Guys, please. This was a terrible choice. I was in the Patreon fights back before this dropped. Please do "Burn" or "Fascination St." to really see this band at their peak! PLEASE
Lost In Vegas You guys should listen to Fascination Street, A Forest, Charlotte Sometimes, Burn, Disintegration, In Between Days, Pictures Of You...
This came out today, too! ua-cam.com/video/HpA6n7o3C80/v-deo.html
You said that his hair looks like Edward Scissorhands. They actually modeled Edward Scissorhand's hair after Robert Smith's hair.
Because The Cure are really legends.
True story
Tim Burton asked them to make the soundtrack, but Robert couldn't because he was working Disintegration.
Facts. Chino did get influenced by The Cure, but also the Smiths, and Duran Duran. The Deftones track "The Passenger" w/ Maynard is a response to Duran Duran's "The Chauffer". Listen to them one after the other w/ lyrics. 😊
Robert wishes he was a good looking as Johnny Depp at the time.
Robert Smith wrote this for his wife, legendary track. The sad melody but yet so happy and affectionate lyrics, great dynamic, the cure is one of the greatest bands to exist.
So agree. I was disappointed that they didn't like this and probably wouldn't listen to them more.
I started listening to all his songs these days and I love it, I heard this song and Pictures of You about 2 years ago, and I really finally found what makes me feel at home
Specifically, he wrote this for his wife after a phone fight while on a very long tour. “How ever far away, I will always love you. How ever long I stay, I will always love you..”
Millennial Prog-Metal Guitarist here - there are things from before my time that I absolutely latch onto (outside my Metal roots) - this song is one of them...beautiful piece. To reduce it to "RomCom" or "Chick Flick" stuff is a mistake. I'm sure they'd have the same take about things like Tears For Fears "Head Over Heels".
You can’t listen to The Cure without checking out “A Forest” it’s a masterpiece
ok ima go check it.

The Smith's - How Soon is Now...thumbs up so they see it!!!
I’ve been waiting for them to do the smiths since they started the channel, How soon is now is a good introduction song.

I was thinking that, how I would listen to it front to back, back then.
That's what Eric Cartman said.
The Cure are iconic! He isn't singing depressed. He is singing romantically to his wife. This is one of my fav songs. Love the Cure so many great hits!
Deftones is definitely inspired by The Cure. Many bands and artists are, actually. Even the guys from Metallica and Megedeth have talked about their love for bands like The Cure and R.E.M and the like.

Ironic that this song is "Lovesong," and their greatest love song is actually "Just Like Heaven" ---possibly the greatest pop love song ever recorded.
I thought their greatest lovesong was friday im in love. I bought that on cd single from Sam the record man back in the day. I feel old
I love the Dinosaur Jr. cover. Robert Smith liked it so much he said it influenced the way they now play it live.
@@bassage13 Dinosaur! So ahead of their time. They don't get the credit they should, honestly. Trailblazers.
You’re right - “Just Like Heaven” is The Cure’s best song - impossible to dislike for the uninitiated!
I wholeheartedly agree. "Just Like Heaven" is an unbelievable metaphor for our relationship with God. The feeling of that song is "just like heaven."
Robert wrote this for his wife. They are still together after decades.
You hit the nail on the head about Chino taking inspiration from The Cure! He has confirmed it himself. The Cure is one of his favorite bands growing up along with Depeche Mode and Durran Durran and they all have a similar vibe to them. Totally impressed that you picked that up!
Well Chino has awesome taste.
It's not depressing music, as much as it's music for the down/depressed. Life isn't always easy and happy; this is music that can touch love+beauty even during the down times.
depressing music makes me happy :D
Beautifully said I'd rather listen to music that can speak to and for me about depression instead of acting out
The Cure - "Fascination Street"
They were a VERY diverse genre-hopping band. Ignore the "goth" meme - there's SO much more to The Cure.
What meme?
One of my favorite songs
The bass line in that tune is still one of the most intense if not the most intense I've ever heard in my life
GroinFaceGroin
Super easy and fun to play too. It was the first song I learned on bass at 14yo in 1989.
"Disintegration is the greatest album ever!"--Kyle Brofloski

Mecha-Streisand disagrees.
No argument there - my favourite too - though Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me is pretty magnificent too.
That's what got me to check out the album lol

The Cure "Burn" is playlist for me.

Yeah burn was awesome
Yeah man, one of the best. Seems like only The Crow fans like that song.
Also ‘From The Edge of The Deep Green Sea’ is another great by them.
I legit would get ready for school playing that song - putting my clothes on in slow-mo like I was the Crow, haha.
This band is the 80’s sound because they pretty much influenced everyone ... including Chino
They are also Jonathan Davis’s favorite band.
Godfather of Goth, but I think he hated being called that.
That was such a GOOD catch by George to hear Robert Smith's influence on Chino Moreno's singing!
No Joy Division influenced everybody
@@kennyevans6197 Division influenced plethora of artists that right but only in a couple of genre fields , The Cure influenced EVERYONE in every genre
Deftones are HUUUUUUGE fans of The Cure, and they've covered "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" plenty of times live.
For another Cure track to try, I think you guys would LOVE the 1991-ish remix of "Close To Me" with the hip hop groove.
I remember buying The Cure Mixed Up on cassette in 90 & I still play that junk. I actually found a 3 album release of Mixed Up about a year or so ago for digital DL & it's bangin. The original remix of Fascination Street is still off the hook.
LOVE the Deftones.
I hope LIV reacts to Ohms, the Deftones newest song.
"He's saying when I am home I am home again, but it doesn't sound like that in his voice."
Welcome to the Cure.
And Morrissey- The Smiths😂
Because he’s not home. He knows what makes him whole, but he doesn’t have it.
lol Chino literally said in an interview that he learned how to sing by singing along with The Cure songs.
Guys, this is one song! The Cure is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for a reason. Check out their other albums
A-freaking-men!!
Thank you!
The Cure's Disintegration album doesn't get enough credit for the timeless music/lyrics for ur soul, always the Cure to make u feel happy n sad at the same time, only great music can do that...
The Cure is Chino’s favorite band ever I’m pretty sure.
Yup, the Cure has been a huge influence on the Deftones.
Edward Scissorhands’ look came from Robert Smith, not the other way around..
I think for those of us who grew up in the 80s and you love this music, it's just when you hear it it takes you back to that time and has a certain feel to it. I can't explain why I love the Cure but I do.
Yeah 80s nostalgia is real.
To George’s point, y’all should check Deftones cover of the Cure “If only Tonight we Could Sleep”. The Cure was indeed a major inspiration on the deftones
YES FUCKEN DEFTONES!!

Man, The Cure hits me hard. One of my brothers passed away in 2013 and The Cure was his favorite group.
Ryan mentions hearing the song in a movie, maybe a lot of movies.
The main movie where 311 performed a cover of Lovesong is 50 First Dates.
I love 311's version
“Lovesong. Its a lovesong” = “no more mister nice guy”
MrBrainjas thanks! I was looking through the comments to figure out that tune, lol
That melody was so quickly noticeable!
I was going to comment the same exact thing!
Well Robert and Alice Cooper has the make-up thing in common.. so..
The Cure--“Lullaby”! Stunning song about his drug addiction.
I love that song! I never looked up the meaning, always thought it might have been about mental illness
i love that song its a masterpiece
I thought it was about sleep paralysis lol but yours is most likely right
The cover of this song by 311 was extremely popular for a few years. That's where I initially recognized it from.
I would like to see a reaction to "Fascination Street"...totally different kind of sound.
That's the best introduction song to the band.
The Cure are masters of bittersweet melancholy. ❤
I know this is now old, but if you're going down the 80s alternative route, you have to listen to the iconic "How Soon Is Now" by the Smiths. (BTW, "Lovesong" is more iconic, but "Fascination Street" is more up your alley.)

The Smiths - How soon is now
Bobby Montiel LOVE THAT SONG!!
Fun fact: The Smiths hate that song.
I, on the other hand, love that song.
@@negativeindustrial ironic enough, besides Strange Ways Here We Come this song is considered a truly talented and creative song. Everything prior to this was a completely rip off of bands like T.Rex (metal guru/panic) and The Chameleons. P.S I love The Smiths and Morrissey but we can't deny the fact that they did not create a genre or sound. Morrissey's diva persona and attitude is what really launched their career (after they broke up). So much so that Johnny has said Morrissey was the reason he left The Smiths. He hated his lyrics and felt he ruined his music writing.
Andres Mendoza
Morrissey is very easy to hate. I grew up straddling this weird fence of being an artist and musician in love with the music of the Cure and the paintings of Caravaggio who was also a carnivore that played football and building/racing cars and loved the music of Ministry. It was this odd feeling of hating everything that came out of Morrissey’s mouth while listening to his music on a date with the goth girl from my art class because it felt romantic.
Thankfully, I found out Robert Smith despised him as a person while covering a song by The Smiths. That seemed to put my misplaced teenage angst at peace.
Holy shit I was a douchebag 🤣
@@negativeindustrial i think its funny as well that Robert Smith hates Morrissey. Morrissey has a god complex and thinks he is better than everyone. He has talked down on Depeche Mode who are still crushing it. He talked bad about David Bowie and basically said Bowie had lost "it" 😂🤣. I really do believe its stems from two things; Marc Bolan's rejection and the fact that he knows he has been carried his entire career by great musicians like Marr, White, Day etc.
Dammit! I can’t get George’s Lovesong out of my head now..😂
"Disintegration" is one of the best and most depressive album ever recorded. Try tittle song, "Homesick" and "Fascination Street".
You should check out A Forest by The Cure. It's less poppy and really atmospheric, while keeping a funky, catchy tempo throughout.
PicturesOfYou88 big facts
Yes..A Forest is great.
Love this song :D
Also I don't think the Chino comparison is wrong at all. The Cure are really influential after all and definitely inspired a shit ton of bands who came after. I believe Deftones have covered The Cure before, and Deftones and The Cure are playing together at a festival the 31th August. So yeah, I'd say George is right.
Speaking of Deftones, you guys should listen to Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away).
Big time influential they were indeed! 👍 I'm Hispanic and I can mentio two big time Spanish bands in the 90s that totally have their influence in their music and deftones definitely and many many more so you are accurate👍
Deftones have covered the Cure in the past.
311 has a cover of this song, that's really really good. It's a more reggae feel, but still 311.
MTV Icon is a series of annual television specials produced by MTV between 2001 and 2004, each paying homage to a musical artist or band selected as a cultural icon, in a format similar to the network's annual Video Music Awards and Movie Awards events. A live audience of musicians, celebrities, and fans would view a biographical film depicting the career of that year's chosen icon, interspersed by celebrity introductions and live performances of popular artists playing cover versions of the icon's songs. The iconic artist would then accept an award and perform a live set of their own at the close of the show. The series celebrated Janet Jackson in 2001, Aerosmith in 2002, Metallica in 2003, and The Cure in 2004. (Wikipedia)

Depeche Mode’s ENJOY THE SILENCE is a must.
Great band, unique music.
This is an example of a band and music that just grows on you the more you listen to it.
If you guys come back to The Cure, you should check out Boys Don't Cry. It's kind of the polar opposite of Lovesong. It's more upbeat, it's guitar driven, and it's about being heartbroken rather than being in love. Might be my favorite song in their discography
It was covered and made a comeback in The Wedding Singer!
“Jumping Someone Else’s Train” and “Boys Don’t Cry” are two of their best songs.
you guys would probably dig "The Cure -Lullaby" more
Guys!, Edward Scissorhands look is based on Robert Smith according to Tim Burton own words
Neil Gaiman's Sandman's look was based on Simon Gallop (Cure's bass player) btw
When will you guys look into Killing Joke, one of the very best bands ever.
@Queen Doris of the 8th Dimension Very good songs. Hard to pick favorites. Though I may have a favorite from each album.
Oh hell yes!
I started listening to them last year... two of the biggest decisions I made last year I made while hearing Killing Joke's-Into the Unknown
Love like blood.
Yes, and since these guys love Metallica, they should do the early stuff, not the new wavey stuff like Love Like Blood. They should do The Wait or Wardance or Pssyche (I think Metallica covered The Wait). Or maybe Eighties & get into the whole Nirvana nonsense about it.
They influenced allot of the 90s bands. To me they were poetry in motion ❤️

Chicken Bubblegum ITA! A must-hear, for sure & I’d definitely watch! 🎶
The Cure’s catalogue is too large, varied & Smith’s time in the music business so long, to just react to one track.
I think the "80's sound" is primarily due to the jacked up snare, which is probably the most dominant sound in the mix...
They were massive in Ireland in the 80's when I visited family every year, travelling from the UK. The local club would always set aside 10-15 minutes to play The Cure for the crowd. Ireland love their melodies and The Cure produced so many.
The Cure: Just Like Heaven, Pictures of You, Boys Don’t Cry, Cut Here, Why Can’t I Be You, Close to Me
Ahhhh Why Can't I Be You is so underappreciated. Damn great track.

"Lullaby" is the jam. The groove is fantastic and has a bit more machismo. "Kyoto Song" is also great.
George - your tune for “love song, it’s a love song” is actually the tune for No More Mr. Nice Guy by Alice Cooper.
No more Mr Clea...hee.. hee...heen!
Hey, you’re right!
The Cure was the most influential band in my life. And Lovesong is at the top.
You chose their most “successful on the charts song”, but by no means, a top 5 in their catalog. Fascination Street will be yalls favorite, but Pictures of You and Just Like Heaven as also a must.
I asked myself at the beginning why not Fascination Street or Pictures?!?! This was a great song to me, but I love The Cure 🤷🏻♀️ Pictures is such a beautiful song 😍 Lullaby needs to be in there too. They just chose the wrong song lol.
@@rikkijones7597 gotta agree... I thought the same thing when they said the song chosen at the beginning. Lovesong is a really nice song, but it's one of the more repetitive & boring out of their catalogue even though I love it. Just Like Heaven is also a very commercial song though

Robert Smith's greatest achievement was helping save South Park from Mecha-Streisand.

If these guys listened to a dozen or so Cure tunes they would eventually realize the genius. You can’t deny Robert Smith is one of the great artists of the 80s.
bad song choice for a first reaction to The Cure
Robert Smith wrote this song for his wife, expressing his feelings for her while he was away on tour. It must of worked, since they are still together to this day.
Really well done lads. The Cure have been my favourite band for almost 30 years, as a friend at school lent me a copy of this exact album when I was 11 or 12... STILL my favourite album of all time, and when I feel I discovered music. Regarding Lovesong, Robert Smith wrote it as a wedding present to his wife, as they'd been married in 1988... hence the overt romance and outpouring of emotion. That being said, I think "Lovesong! It's a lovesong!" has serious potential... for when the Lost In Vegas band finally gets going. 😂 All the best lads, and cheers for the great videos.
Disintegration and Loveless defined my adolescence. They were the first albums I heard that were truly transformative and created another world as you listened.
Thanks fellas. Now I'm going to be singing "Love song, it's a love song!" all week.
I am a big fan but this is probably the worst reaction video by you guys ever.
Fascination Street is from the same album as Lovesong and is also one of their hits but it definitely has a different vibe and doesn't feel as poppy. It's worth a listen. I'd definitely recommend checking out The Kiss, The Hanging Garden, or If Only Tonight We Could Sleep (maybe an original vs cover with the Deftones' version).
The Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss album is just so good!
Serious Arse Bass Line In It
Saw them in concert a few years ago and they were unbelievable! Robert is still trying to pull off his original work so I got to give them props for that
This entire album is absolutely worth the listen, top 5 all time for me
The Cure's music is basically all dedicated to Robert's wife. lol He has been with his wife Mary since he was 14.
Not gonna lie, I probably wouldn't have started the cure with Lovesong as a recommendation. Pictures of you, fascination st, lullaby I feel are better intros for them
Agreed. The Forest and Primary are my faves. Also like, Jumping Someone Else's Train.
I agree. I think people tend to go with this because it's one of their most famous, but not necessarily their best. I do enjoy the song, but there are far better songs.
Absolutely. Boys Don't Cry is early punk-pop, and Just Like Heaven is a more upbeat song. Because you're both Alice in Chains fans, you might like the loud rock of Fascination Street.
Early in the pandemic, a group of us did some recording from home, doing our best to multitrack over each other, and I played bass on this. It is indeed a terrific bass part. Without that, this would be a little too bleak -- which, frankly, is true of a bit of The Cure's discography.
So yeah -- Fascination Street and Just Like Heaven. If you don't like those, they're not your thing, and move on.
Definitely agree here.
Agreed but people are constantly suggesting, "the hits," which I usually find boring and a misrepresentation of the true sound of the artist.
This is really interesting to watch with George & Ryan. The Cure have at different times of my music listening life been my favourite band and the band that probably effected me the most.
Pretty much most times I’ve tried to play them or introduce them to a friend it hasn’t really worked and watching this is sort of similar to doing that.
They aren’t really a band you just put on like this and listen to a song and then say “oh yes this is awesome”. I kind of even understand why they and other friends I’ve shown react this way.
I’m not really sure how you do get into the Cure but it just happens. I heard Just Like Heaven on a compilation, brought that and somehow got hooked after a few listens and virtually brought and listened to their whole catalogue over a 5 year period after that.
I’m not sure what I’m getting at but watching George & Ryan then I still understand why people don’t just get caught straight away but when you do the back catalogue and their career is just one of the best things a music lover can fall into.
Fun facts: this song is for the lead singer's then girlfriend..now his wife

You guys crack me up! I love watching your reactions!
While this is distinctly 80s, this sounds nothing like what came before it and it's not remotely formulaic to "the 80s". What's brilliant about this song is the way it mixes contrasting elements. The drums are very bright, up and energetic, but the organ is playing this minor key, very chill, slow paced, more contemplative riff. The vocals speak of intense and comforting love, but the singer is feeling, also, the melancholy of that. But that's not sadness, it's the yearning for this love. It's somewhat like when people cry when they experience intense joy. That's what's so brilliant about this song. He's not singing the simplistic, "oh I'm so in love, look how happy I am" bubblegum pop nonsense. He's reflecting the the depth and complexity of the emotion, how intense love can leave you exposed, humbled and grateful.
Great point
Alice Cooper “No More Mister Nice Guy” is the melody he was guessing at the beginning.
The entire Alice Cooper album Killers is excellent top to bottom.

Wrong - Disintegration was a complex, layered album that didn't follow any pop formulas of the day. In fact the mediocre review from these guys is probably due to the lack of rock cliches and hooks in the song. It's all about mood and this has just as strong of a mood as A Strange Day or any of their earlier songs.
eximusic I said nothing about the album as a whole, just the song they chose to review. Love song isn’t the best song on that album by a long shot.

Love Song was their radio friendly song. Also, they play it a lot on MTV too.
There was a cover of this in "50 First Dates".
I love this song and I also loved the 311 cover. :)
One of the things about the Cure is that there's often a big disconnect between the emotions of the lyrics and the vibe of the singing, Robert Smith will do a happy song that sounds depressed, and a sad song that sounds manic and cheerful.
Chino is def Inspired by the cure and I think it’s amazing you caught onto that! 🤣Haha on another note, plz react to Deftones new song Ohms! Would love to hear your thoughts!
This is actually one of my favorite songs by the cure and it has an amazing cover by Adele (more soul/jazz) and 311 (more vibes and reggae feel) . You would probably love those versions.
Lullaby. Every time I think of The Cure, I see lights passing through mist refracted windows and listening to Lullaby knowing no day.
