    Might use a little pillow filling (white fluff) under pan. Makes the night latch travel easy. Maybe double check your pan tension. If targeting yotes, a gray should be able to stand on it without firing. If you want all canines, loosen it up a bit. Peat moss is good beneath and above trap if it’s moist/rainy or you are dealing with freeze/thaw conditions. If it’s not freezing, might just get away with pillow stuffing under pan and regular dirt. Looked good though. Appreciate your humility. Us trappers are always learning from our target species and other trappers. Thanks to your dad and granddad for passing the outdoors on to you. And thank you for paying it forward. 👍

    I was the first person that I know of to use peat moss. This was back in 1983. Put a layer down and bed the trap in it then just lightly cover the trap and blend it in,works like a charm.

    All i use is peat moss. even in cold weather i just dust the bottom of the hole before placing the trap. then a handful inside the jaws. I've actually uncovered traps after a inch of rain and the top layer will lock out the water. awesome stuff

      I’m going to use peat for the first time this weekend. It’s been dry but well below zero. In the past I’ve just used wax dirt but I don’t have any. Do you have any advise or tricks on bedding solid in the peat??

    • @Shanestrapping
      @Shanestrapping 3 місяці тому +1

      @@gmill2316 if freezing I put a light coat under the trap and use a bowl shap bed so the trap almost beds itself. The fill the inside of jaws not much dirt on top grass if you can like a blended set.

    I use underalls under the pan and peat moss depending on the weather. I like setting my trench sets this way bc it keeps the trench tighter...it may not make the biggest difference but it works for me. Keep the great content coming.

    Straight peat cost me a lot of animals from increasing pan tension too much. I went to pull traps and could literally jump on them without being able to set them off. I went to poly under the pan and peat in the jaws. Have been happy with that set up

    I make my own underalls (under pan) out of attic insulation rolls. I cut it first into strips as wide as my pan. Then I cut them to fit length of pan. Each cut out will give you 4-6 pan underalls. Fast, cheap and works great. Then I fill jaws with peat, thin layer of salt then just dry dirt.
    I also use dried river sand in bottom of bed to bed the trap in first.

    If you’re using earth anchors there’s no need for the shock springs. People give coyotes too much credit, they’re not that strong. I only use springs when using a single stake. And running your trap turned 90 degrees like that is the only way to go. Better catches every time. peat moss is fantastic, doesn’t increase pan tension at all.. I’ve used it for years. I’ve had trouble putting stuff under the pan like insulation or anything like that.

    $20 lesson on anchors learned. Lost a duke 550 last night. Must've been a big male because he pulled the entire anchor out!! Gonna go to a different type. What type of anchors are you running?

    • @CarolinaCoyote
      @CarolinaCoyote  5 місяців тому

      I use the fox hollow earth anchors with chain. I have NEVER had an earth anchor pulled out of the ground. I’m some hard red clay areas I’ll only drive the anchor in about 6-8 inches and they still hold. What type are you running currently?

    • @DarJenoutdoors
      @DarJenoutdoors 5 місяців тому +1

      @@CarolinaCoyote it's an off brand Chinese made cable anchor. Works just like a fox hollow but they just will not catch. Drive em in 24 inches and I can pull them right back out if I pull slow. Give it a hard yank and it will set. I doubled up on my remakes...drove two anchors at 45 degrees so that the ends wind up together then a quick link ties them both to the trap chain

    • @CarolinaCoyote
      @CarolinaCoyote  5 місяців тому

      @DarJenoutdoors yeah that sounds like a pain. The fox hollow anchors are what me and a majority of the trappers that I know use. I’ve never had a problem with them, other than getting them out of hard clay sometimes lol

    What is the purpose of the peat moss and the wax dirt?

    • @CarolinaCoyote
      @CarolinaCoyote  4 місяці тому +1

      Peat moss keeps dirt from getting under the pan. If dirt gets under the pan, the trap won’t go off. The wax dirt keeps the trap from freezing. If the trap is froze to the ground, the trap will not go off.

    How many traps should you run on 34 acres? That’s a video I haven’t seen. I’ll hopefully do a video of my land and how I have trapped.

    • @CarolinaCoyote
      @CarolinaCoyote  5 місяців тому +1

      There’s a lot of factors here. How many traps can you afford to buy? How much free time do you have to check them every day? How many good locations are there to set traps on?
      In my opinion, the more the better. Your odds of catching are higher with 20 traps than they are with only 6. I’ve started setting AT LEAST 2 traps at every location. Making the sets look different. That way if they don’t commit to one, they may commit to another.
      I would set as many as you have time to handle. 5 traps set on perfect location will always be better than 20 traps just randomly scattered. Hope this helps answer your question!

    • @tudyk21
      @tudyk21 5 місяців тому +2

      I haven't watched many of your vids (this is the first), but if you have 20 sets on 34 acres, I suggest that you use a large variety of scents (baits & lures) the same stuff on several sets in a small area may not pique the interest of a coyote. If he wasn't interested in something, he won't be interested in it 100 yards later. 😉
