The weather kind of cooperated with me this year so i was able to use more step down dirt holes, caught probably 70% of the 55 coyote this year in them

I like the way you do your trench sets, quick & easy, looks more natural than piling the dirt at the top and around it, i put one in a week ago it closely resembles yours, keep it simple always been my strategy. Thanks for sharing

Thanks for watching, keeping stuff as natural as possible will help to keep them from rejecting your sets…they are weary anyway, why make them even more sketched out?

BINGO! Pretty much the way I do it except I use an auger for a big hole...but tight trench is right on IMO.

I've never used peat moss . How does it do in the rain? It must do pretty good, you have made a lot of catches!!

Its not bad, little rain wont hurt it, main thing is trying to not put too much cover layer over it, thatll freeze and crust over but if you get a big rain just remake it with fresh peat moss, i dried around 110 gallons of peat in the summer so ive got plenty to play with

Do you always not use gloves

Only time i really use gloves is if its cold outside or muddy, other than that id rather not wear them

Nice set but why would you need to put that piece of wood there as backing? That is a sure way to prohibit most of the coyotes from working your set. Especially since you moved it in.

Keeps them from the diggin the back out on an opposite wind, you dont have too but i know how the wind changes almost every day here and i know they can approach it from the back…ive not had a problem using a backing before

Fair enough. For me personally once I realized on a dirt hole backing was not needed and actually detrimental, my coyote catch increased by leaps and bounds. Not trying to be critical I just wish I would have learned that valuable lesson early on. Good luck and get after them!!!!!!!@@MidwesternTrapper

Thanks for the feed back, i dont use a backing for all my dirt holes, just when i think they’re needed

Coyotes can be made to go were you want them to go with some very aggressive methods. I used an old Christmas tree at one set. It worked great. It depends on the set and the location.
That wood will get their attention and they won't be paying attention to the trap bed. I prefer to use a burnt piece myself... That really gets their attention.
I wasn't sure about that so I put one out in my backyard. My 2 dogs made a bee line for it. That sold me.
I used to be one in the "you can't force or use big blocking for coyotes." camp... Just look where they live... They deal with all sorts of obstacles... And.... The very same thing was said about foxes before coyote numbers exploded...
