He's been use to a 3_4 his entire career, and now with this being a 4_3, he knows that he's not preforming to what he thinks is his best. Also him being 32yrs does not help matters. He knows that him being 32yrs he's basically on the block already and so with him not performing his best he knows that will basically secure his exit. And the packers have to give more and more play time to younger guys because they NEED to develop. So I feel like he just wants to end his career these next few years with a BANG! Playing the way he loves 3_4 at the highest level. So thankyou to Preston Smith 91 for all you gave to The Greenbay Packers and good luck in Pittsburgh!
I totally get it from Preston side of things. Realistically with his cap hit next year we were probably gonna cut him anyways being cut in 32 in the NFL is a death sentence for most players careers. Getting traded and put in a position where you were more likely to succeed could extend his career by maybe a year or two whatever helps him succeed in the end. I’m in support of dude gave his all for the green and gold and I’ll always respect him for that.
I don't know enough about Pittsburg. They run a 3-4 so maybe Preston gets more reps. There are good veteran starters there so maybe he will still be backup.
It was surprising to a degree that the Green Bay Packers got so little compensation for Preston Smith right before the trade deadline. Even though he will soon be 32 years of age, and is not exactly an inexpensive player, he is still relatively productive and plays a premium position. The Green Bay Packers saved only around $2 million, so it could have made sense to keep him until the end of the season, since the contract has no guarantees beyond 2024. But that’s not what Preston Smith wanted. In his 1st press conference in Pittsburgh, Preston Smith revealed that he requested a trade from the Green Bay Packers because he didn’t feel comfortable with the defensive scheme change in Green Bay. Preston Smith played his entire career up to this season as a 3-4 outside linebacker. When the Green Bay Packers fired Joe Barry and hired Jeff Hafley as their new defensive coordinator, the base defense changed to a 4-3 defense, and edge defenders are now listed as defensive ends. The switch isn’t as impactful as it used to be, since teams play nickel defense most of the time anyway. However, the defensive front structure is different enough to make Preston Smith feel like he was not playing at his best. In 9 games this season, Preston Smith had 10 pressures and 2.5 sacks. Over the past few weeks, he was losing snaps to younger players like Lukas Van Ness and Kingsley Enagbare. According to our General Manager Brian Gutekunst, that trend wouldn’t revert back. The Green Bay Packers accepted a 7th-round 2025 NFL Draft Pick for Preston Smith, but the Pittsburgh Steelers will pay his entire remaining salary for 2024. The Pittsburgh Steelers have Preston Smith under contract through 2026, but those are now basically 2 team options of $13.4 million in 2025 and $14.1 million in 2026 without any guarantees. In Pittsburgh, Preston Smith will enter the edge rotation behind their starters TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith. Go Pack Go 💚💚💛💛
LVN and Enagbare about to get the reps they need! Especially LVN! Actually looking forward to this! LVN needs to develop his pass rush but his run defense is solid!
@ you have to understand what we drafted in him. He’s young as hell and he was a very raw project coming out of Iowa with a ton of potential. He’s huge and fast as hell for a dude his size. He also has great pursuit and is a great tackler! Dude’s chased down Justin Fields from like 10 yards away. He just needs to develop. He’ll be a beast!
He'll probably do ok in that 3 4. At least we got a 7th. He wasn't doing much for us. More reps for 55. 90. 53. Him and and the other Smith did well for us. When we signed them. Getting some some age on those wheels though. ThNks 91
Preston asked for the trade? I'd be pleasantly surprised if that is true. This saves the Packers huge on the next two years cap. We were using him less and less. We have his replacement on the roster already.
Idk because Hafley said if they feel comfortable standing they can. But i believe I heard that Hafleys style in the front on how to approach the rush is different as well so maybe that's it
What really happened, with all deference to the contributions Preston Smith has made to GB, and his stated trade request: Salary 2024: $2M 2025: $13.4M 2026: $14.1M 2025,2026 years not guaranteed. So, Preston was going to cut after this year, and will certainly be cut by Steelers after this year, unless he renegotiates a much reduced salary.
Dude this surprised you? He is not a hand in the dirt guy, this is the exact reason he left washington and came to GB. I knew this as soon as we went to 4-3 he would be out of place. Go back and look it up. He came here because it was a 3-4. Redskins were 4-3 .
So him wanting to leave Green Bay explains why he hasn't been playing at an elite level like he can it's been a waste of 7/8 games should have traded him at the beginning of the year
What if he was just doing it as he wasn't happy there it was just a question you start getting weird active Trump won his election in that in your house 💛💚🩷💙
Dude, you are so on it when it comes to new content about the Packers. You’re doing a great job.
I appreciate it.
@@SidelineScoopyou really are tho God bless 🙏

Remember Aaron Kampman? When the Pack went to 3-4 D? I do
Preston probably saw the writing on the wall. Time waits for no man.

Van ness and brooks going to breakout
i hope so
I don’t think it’s that he didn’t want to be in Green Bay he clearly said that the system doesn’t fit him so it didn’t make sense to stay..
Preston Smith is a class act! Happy for him.

Am I the only one who thinks Van Ness is never going to live up to where we drafted him? Why does everybody love this guy??

Thanks Luke! GO PACK GO!!
Didn't this happen with Aaron Campman when Packers went from 4-3 to 3-4 a while back?
As a fan i think like a GM, if you are good i want you and if you get old and expensive i want to get rid of you even if i like the player.
He's not a hands in the dirt guy. Wish him the best

It's pretty cool both ways tbh!
Engrabare and van Ness will handle business
I understood half of what he said
Probably why he didn't interview much

What did we get in return ? Still haven’t heard
7th round pick
He’s going to be a backup in Pittsburgh.
He can’t cover backs out of the back field anymore!
I don’t really expect much from the Packers this season. They’re showing signs of surrendering.
True frfr
I don't see 6-3 teams surrender
Go Pack go take it one game at a time keep it up bro Luke take it one game at a time
Good to know😮
Sorry our new defense couldn’t cater to you💪 better off with him gone
Edit: time for our young guys to step up and make some noise!!!
Cb1 obviously wasnt happy jaire and stokes took his spot
Seems like everyone wins
Oh I didn’t know he requested for a trade
I agree he is past his prime ,no productivity this year ,time for young guns to step up
So him wanting to leave Green Bay explains why he hasn't been playing at an elite level like he can it's been a waste of 7/8 games should have traded him at the beginning of the year
Jumping to conclusions without the facts is a dummy move.
