Is that the hackknife ?
what mic does the spirited man use ?
Had to make the purchase last night 👍
@@adityakapur9394 Hand crafted ones.
Never have two men been so obviously related without being twins, than the Neistat brothers. I love your aesthetic.
Because of Tom Sachs probably
@@chirpy95442 haha, fair enough

This might be the best video yet on this channel. Amazing attention to detail
Was gonna say the same thing
I'm drawn to this one most as well.
I can’t decide if I wish I was more like this or less like this
I tried to be more like this. It's way more expensive yet looks way less expensive and takes a long time to accumulate extra parts and pieces. When I need a shelf I have two options. 1 wait until I have scrap or 2 go buy what I need. I am not going to pay for scrap so my shelves end up looking store-bought or are store-bought. My workshop has a mix of spirited man and amazon man (the ladder being bought online not a manly man from the Amazon). Lastly, I realized that I had to be who I am. Buying everything from the store doesn't work either. Some things need to be custom-built. So, I have a good mix haha.
@@williambennett3 this isn’t something you can choose to be like man, it’s an inability to stop yourself from perfecting things for your own satisfaction and no one else. These details aren’t random, they are necessary elements in Van’s character ( in his opinion).
@@williambennett3 it’s not about money, or organization, or anything other then the temptation to make things better while also making them unique
Less. Unless you're independently wealthy, do you seriously have 10 hours to make a special bike seat? If you do have this time (and you're not wealthy) I would encourage you to dedicate that time to your career (or finding a new one).
@@hobbs2005 100% agree. I would like to do more... but I still have to put food on the table... So nope, I don't have 10h
This was like watching a fascinating full feature film in 8 minutes and 8 seconds. Totally worth the price of admission.
This SPIRITED MAN cheers up my day
Your mom cheers up my day
I've watched this at least 5 times.
I have the same compulsions, and it's nice to hear it described so succinctly. Thanks Van
It's so great he's making content on YT, like I knew I would love it because I loved the early work he and Casey did together, but man holy crap is this a different level of craft and storytelling. The Neistat bros give us very similar levels of quality work in just very different ways. I love it.
My favorite woodworker commenting on my favorite storyteller? What a nice little detail for this video.
@@TonySteinbach same, freaking same!!!
good to see you here! love both these channels
Van, we need the "DOMESTIC PARTNER, BABY MAMA, MAIN SQUEEZE, COMMON LAW WIFE" - merch
lol, yes indeed
Yes!!!
"Spirited Woman" merch. would be lovely - I'd buy that. Cheers from Canada
Omg yes!!!
Exactly
I like the To-Do notes on cardstock - might steal that one!
Not going to lie, the grill looks so much better now.
Yes it does! I want it on mine now!!!
SOooo DOes...
I know, right? I would have never thought of that, but it does look so much better.
Totally agree, the word is way better than the oval logo.
Toyota = good vehicles, great trucks before 2004, bad Cowboy Bob logo.
One of the things I loved most and miss most fr Casey's movies was the repair or building segments. The construction paper roll. The paint markers. The shop shots, the organization and the use of materials in a pragmatic way. The engraving.
This channel fills that void.
Thanks Van 👍🏼
the first video that really got me hooked on Casey's channel back in 2016 was his studio tour. amazing to get more of this.
"I will make everything around me beautiful, that will be my life."
-Elsie de Wolfe, who definitely cared about detail.
Since watching Van's videos I have become so much more organized. To me, real art is something that resonates and is carried over into my daily thoughts.
Petition for Van to start his own pencil company. He's the kind of person to know how to make the perfect pencil.
Agreed. The Neistat #2 mechanical pencil, or the VN #2 pencil.
Van Neistat and David Rees would be an unstoppable pencil powerhouse
I’ll be doing this eraser hack to my .9 mm yellow mechanical pencils!!!
Btw: I order “B” lead replacements- the softer leads make a darker line with less effort
This is brilliant. In 1999 when I bought my 1994 FJ80 Toyota Landcruiser it had the old Toyota badge. The 1995 Model has the "International Toyota Symbol". Back then it concerned me that the badge on my 1994 FJ80 Toyota Landcruiser would date the vehicle. 22 years later? I wouldn't have it any other way. Another great story Van, thank you.
Im glad this man loves himself enough to make a video about how quirky he is, because now I love him too.
Never would have thought there was a better story telling Neistat than Casey, to find out the master had a sensei, named Van, the ronins of telling stories.
Casey was your benchmark for a great storyteller? I reckon you need to expand your horizon there , bud.
I want them to tell stories together.
@@billypilgrim1
You can fuck off with that snobbery mate.
It’s a subjective topic.
There is nothing that makes Tarantino better than Neistat, or 5 year old me drawing on ms paint.
@@qwertpoiuy430 No snobbery on my part, mate. I like Casey, but I just think it's funny when people go on a hyperbole when it comes to youtube creators. "There is nothing that makes Tarantino better than Neistat" come on, even you know that's utter bullshit, even Casey would agree. And pushing that "art is subjective" narrative is so trite.
@@billypilgrim1 "Better storyteller" is so subjective. Tarentino and Casey tell completely different stories in completely different ways. Both are great, comparing them is not necessary. Everyone is free to prefer one over the other.
The personal amount of detail makes these individual pieces stand out among all those mass produced items all around us. Mass production has embanked our creative spirit. We should flourish the creativity within ourselves.
Dude, this made me feel good about the world. When you have a woman who truly loves you, you have everything, even if you have nothing else.
Come on, people!!!! LIKE THIS TO ONE MILLION!!!!
Yep, then you finally have *enough*
ATTENTION TO DETAIL: the old toyota logo is not hidden and it also feeds my attention to detail ❤
PS: one of the most sweet and beautiful video ever seen. Works on me as a motivational speech 😊
Within the first 2 days of finding this channel it is instantly my favourite channel on youtube.
totally agree!
And I’m sitting here on UA-cam with a brake light that’s been out on my van for weeks. Spirited man, you have inspired me to get up and start fixing it.
This is amazing
Another spirited man here! Went to a different country to buy clay.
OoOooo yeaAAH bruddda
It is
(This is amazing) That is exactly what I kept telling my computer monitor while I watched.
Yeah
Brilliant! Watched in a hot spring while it snowed on me and Colorado rockies in the foreground... And yet the details of the this spirited man's Toyota badge held my attention.
This is the golden nugget of youtube. Gold baby, GOLD!
The Spirited Man is a perfectionist while Casey is an abstractionist, both dedicated to the details in their own ways :)
Any time I fix or improve something, I say to myself: “spirited man.”
LMAO! So much yes in this statement.... #SpiritedMan
Dude please tell me you filled the screw holes, sanded, painted and lacquered that damned badge or I’m not gonna be able to sleep.
Nah, it's industrial, it's cool. I like the exposed look.
I don’t think he gives a fuck if it looks good (by someone else’s standards) or not.. but I feel what you’re saying
I think that’s the point. If it rots away in a few years he’ll make another
All of these... these are not vlogs, these are short documentaries - make me smile and make me think and are absolutely beautiful! The kind of videos that make you pause after you watch them. A true inspiration!
Pause for?
I agree.
Yeah, well put my friend!
Yes. Rich in ... detail.
@@obyybo, never mind...you wouldn’t understand. Grow up a bit, then you might have an epiphany...or not!
It has been a long while since something sucked me into the story as much as this did. So refreshing...I'm glad you are on the tube and I look forward to watching more.
Van has always been a superb filmmaker but with this one it feels like he has finally found his voice that works best for UA-cam. Can't like it enough.
as a Spirited Woman who uses a LOT of sticky notes to make a LOT of modular origami, I can appreciate the attention to sticky note details.
best sticky note please?
@@danijelcerkic273 for sticky note origami, i need a perfectly square sticky note in a vibrant color with some stick but as weak a stick as possible. I have some from the brands Klingy and Vanpad
I've been on a deep dive of Van for the pat two hours. NEVER STOP. You're an inspiration, a breath of fresh air, a youtube treasure.
"Forensic Biographical Purposes" is a phrase I'll never forget.
How to go from perfectly fine to motivated and tearful in 8 minutes and 8 seconds.
Love the downright attitude in way you spoke in this one
This makes me sad but in a happy way.
Hahahahaha jajajajajajajajajajaja hahahahaha jajajajajajajajajajaja
1. A fitting use of Arpeggio I love it.
2. If the devil is believed to reside in the detail the I believe Van needs to make horns.
3. It concludes with a smiling man.
Best Spirited Man episode to date!!
I admire this man immensely. I also know for a fact that you could make, take some photos of, and sell those grilles on any Toyota Taco forum, or IG page and make a killing. Free marketing, already have a template, cost of supplies, and everything else is profit ✊🏼 they’d love the old school Toyota front end
Ain't nobody got time for regular sticky Post-Its. I wrap them around all my various gear cables for labelling, and stick each to itself, eg... "headlamp charging cable", "GoPro charging cable", etc. The super sticky's will become tattered, crinkled and almost illegible after years of use before they let go, unlike the others which fall off after a couple of days, so I appreciate that level of detail. I'm a detail oriented person too, though it was beginning to affect me personally. That was until I heard a really great quote... "sometimes you just gotta stop polishing the glass, and enjoy the view out the window" :)
This was absurd! Absolutely loved it. I cannot believe how similar he and Casey are...about the details...and fixing...and labeling...and hand-made items... :)

Every time we get a glimpse of the spirited woman, I smile. I’m grateful that this spirited man found a domestic partner baby mama main squeeze common law wife.
this by exceedingly far is the best youtube video I have seen in years or perhaps ever. thank you.
Oh my goodness - they are SO brothers - look at those drawers *filled* with stuff - the need to personalise stuff in a highly efficient and detailed way to the highest possible standard
The ending made me smile. Pretty cool grill logo too, I like the detail.
Caraga is named after the Kalagan people (Spanish "Caragan"), a Mansakan subgroup (related to Visayans) native to the regions of Davao and parts of Caraga who speak the Kalagan languages. The name itself is from kalagan (literally "[strong] spirited") which means "fierce" or "brave"; from kalag ("spirit" or "soul") in the native animistic anito religions. Hence, the whole Provincia de Caraga of AD 1622 was called region de gente animosa, that is "region of spirited folk".
That's an interesting historical lesson you got there... Matsalams bai
Amazingly unimportant story told in an earnest becomes a story worth telling. Love it.
"takes about an hour." cracked me up. I love sewing tho, I consider it one of my main making skills. I still believe in learning the basics for simple things like that webbing loop.
A-má-zing! First and foremost you're a true artist Van. The Spirited Man series has been fantastic so far and this is absolutely my favorite one. Can relate so much to this compulsion to get details JUST right, and you telling this story made me feel so understood. Thank you
This is technical artistry. His younger brother doesn't go as far he does, but older brothers sometime have bigger traumas in their lives. I love it !!
this is one of the channels where i would rather pay than stupid advertising interrupting the art.

What I sometimes worry about being an obsessive nature in myself towards details, I can see from a different perspective and can not only accept it, but express it as a gift to the world. Thanks.
Former 89 Hilux double cab owner here. It had the TOYOTA logo in front. And in back of course. It was my dad's first own vehicle, and it was mine too. Looked so handsome in factory metallic crimson with black wheels and tastefully oversized tyres. RIP old yota. You were the best. You always took care of us and you tried to kill the fucker who tried to steal ya. Never go down without a fight was the old thing's motto, apparently. It really was the best.
I’ll give you $20 for the Toyota grill 👍🏻
That'd be a steal for a vintage Toyota grill. I counter your offer with $75--which is still a steal.
This is like watching Old PBS documentaries. I love this
"Can't have a pencil floating around without a date on it!"
Click just because of the Steelers logo..... Was in tears by the end! This is one of the most beautiful videos I've seen, I understand this soooo much! Gonna be rewatching this plenty along with 'snakes'
I’m not gonna lie I totally thought she was going to say “Van, you need to get tested for OCD” and then a full new spinoff series would be announced about how detail is beauty
The card stock post it idea is genius, and has already been in use in my hip pocket for almost a week. Thanks! The military case case for the typewriter details are important too. All details matter.
How does it work? (card stock post it idea)? Was that the to do list?
You’re honestly incredible. With my out of control ADD, I can’t focus on a damn detail in m life unless it’s something I’m damn passionate about like Baby Names. So, I look up to this shit! You’re so fun to listen to you too. Be well. I I do hope you’re ok though. Damn. And your family!!
The 2nd O is a no.
I too like to pay attention to details but I'm not obsessed with them. This video makes me have a lot of sympathy for the spirited man and his honesty.
that 8 minutes and 8 seconds felt like id spent 24 hours learning about detail and wasted none of it. the spirited man is simply, incredible.
Are you me? The more I watch the more parallels I see. I am happy to see you have a spirited woman by your side. Mine has been with me through it all, and I would probably have driven myself mad without her.

Brilliant story-telling and film-making. So full of character and I love the pace.
This Spirited Man understands these compulsions and does not think that they are strange at all. One Spirited Man's OCD is another's way to make a place for himself in the vast chaos.
i completely understand. perfectly reasonable. how could anyone not understand? now, her response? priceless.
wonderful video 👌😌
I don't know how to describe this. Such a great short film? An amazing story? A glimpse into the mind of a genius? All of the above? I don't know. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. I know THAT.
After decades of heavy writing utensil usage, I also arrived at the exact same pencil. And have to go with 0.9mm. I'm most impressed that they still went with millimeters rather than some freedom unit equivalent.
And I thought that Casey Neistat was very detail-oriented. I can see where he got it from. I just love your videos and I don't know why.
I think they got it from Tom sachs ....check him out.He is the guy where both Casey and Van used to work.

My grandfather, an accomplished inventor and patent holder, used those pencils. I have two of his on my desk. I think of him when I use them, and also when I'm not using them.
Read this spirited comment... This is why there are over 200 watches in inventory but only a small fraction are listed on the site. The details of the photoshoots, editing the dust, waiting for the perfect natural lighting. It's why it takes over an hour to meticulously pack an order and drive to hand deliver the package to UPS, USPS or FedEx to ensure it's handed directly to them and scanned in with a drop off receipt. It's why a customer has called this spirited watch store the "Brinks Truck" of watch packaging. It's why there are hundreds of videos of watches and watch movements, hundreds of gigabytes, on several hard drives that don't get edited and uploaded because the details and perfection matter and editing an 8 minute video will consume 8 hours, not counting uploading and deleting 3 times after noticing a color balance shift or something else that no one else will notice. It's why there are dozens of watch reviews written and not published because they "aren't ready" yet. The watch movement database site this spirited watch store owner built has a hundred movements not yet published because this spirited content creator refuses to copy and paste or scrape the web, and must verify each spec. It's why this spirited watch site is perfectly lined up to the pixel, and customized to be different than other websites, but it's slow to have new content. It's why this spirited watch shop and UA-cam channel is loved by its customers and subscribers but its customers and subscribers get tired of asking for more products to buy and videos to watch. It's why this spirited watch UA-cam channel started in 2008 but only has 32k subscribers. Maybe its detail fetish is why this spirited watch store/blog is still here after 13 years, or maybe it's a result of stubbornness or a control freak thing. It's why this spirited watch store has a hard time dealing used watches, because this spirited watch seller wants everything to be perfect but used watches by their nature are not perfect, that's what makes them perfect. This spirited creator is drained from working so hard to make other watch brands look good for a one off sale, which is why this spirited man has been told it's time to put all the spirited man labor into creating a new spirited brand. It's why this spirited comment will be posted with one short phrase then edited to paste the full comment then edited 5 more times after that.
