That is not good. Idk where this guy lives, but where I live you have to clearly label what part is being paid for (i.e. an ad) and what part is not. I can't easily tell what his actual opinions are and what he is paid to say.
Love this video! I immediately added these rules to my notes, and here they are for easy reference: 1. All gifts should contain an element of surprise 2. Respect the gifting Holy Trinity: 1. NICE 2. MADE 3. THOUGHTFUL 3. Made gifts should not be bigger than one's hand. 4. Dating and/or Monogramming a gift gives it extra power 5. Know what flowers your girl likes. 6. Take your time with books. 7. A Postcard COUNTS! 8. TWO DAYS 9. She will tell you. 10. Buy small gifts when you travel. 11. Expensive, not Costly 12. For KIDS: You pick the store, The kid picks the gift. Gift receiving: Send a thank you note The point of gift giving: Make people feel loved (even if you don't love them).
As someone who considers themselves not a good gifter, I appreciate this Van. After watching this, I now feel I have the recipe to be a good one.. and I will be a good one! Much love
my boyfriend sent me this and said it reminded him of my gifts over the years and i've never felt more honored. this video perfectly sums up my gift giving philosophy in far simpler terms than i've ever been able to come up with when asked by my loved ones! i would add one last note: without fail, i have found that men love flowers too , and because flowers are such an unexpected gift for men, you can often ask them outright what flowers they like (without being too blatant with your intentions) and they will be happy to even just get to ponder the question. if they don't have favorite flowers you can always just choose something you think would look nice in their home. :)
6:14 'Know which flowers your girl likes' is really good advice. Every person getting the same breed of flower for their partner, is like implicitly saying 'One key unlocks all doors'. Its hurtful, because you haven't found anything that distinguishes them from someone else you've probably dated...Really good advice
About one of the last comments, not to send you gifts. I find it to be a really cool thing in that case to donate to a special charity and write to the person saying “I donated (insert gift type or money amount) to this charity in your name”. Thee are so many financially secure people with financially secure friends who keep giving each other stuff they don’t need or don’t have space for. Something like “I donated art supplies to a local youth program in your name” is a wonderful thing and feels great for both giver and receiver.
This was surprisingly insightful and brought up way more memories of emotional moments when giving or receiving gifts than I could have expected. Thank you 🙏
My favorite gift I have ever gotten was when I turned 16, I was given a ceramic cup from my art teacher. He made thousands of them that are all really similar but this one felt really special. I mean it helps that he knew I was a pretty big coffee drinker at the time so he also got me a bag of this really good Peruvian coffee to go with it, but the cup just feels magical in a way.
Dear Van, I'm not a gift person. This changed my life. You've just made a lot of people in my life very happy, sometime in the future. I'm sorry for being a consumer. I love your art. Good-luck. Yours truly
Can we talk about the Better than belts ad. This man is a genius, first time in the history of me using youtube I actually watched the ad. Amazing video I love gift giving
Your tip about writing it down is spot on! I keep a running list of gift ideas (on my phone) for the important people in my life and I add to it all year long- then around the holidays or their birthday, I already have 5-8 things on the list to choose from for each person. It makes it sooo easy and I know each gift is thoughful.
I love gifting, it's essential for every spirited man and woman to learn. Some of my favorite gifts to give and receive recently have been consumable things that took considerable effort, like hand made chocolates. It's great to have consumable gifts because almost nobody needs more useless crap in their life
The Spirited Man Channel is nice, thoughtful and made and a great gift for those that look forward to receiving it each week. This is a great video and something very useful for nearly everyone. Thanks Van!
Man, I LOVE this video. The epiphany you talk about is SO magical. It happens to me once in a blue moon, only with people I love the most, and then the inspiration dries. And I want to really really have that epiphany every time I make a gift, I wanna be the perfect gifter, but it's so rare, that I get frustrated!
Addendum to number 5, flowers: If your recipient lives with pets ask the flower shop for pet safe choices. Lillies for example are beautiful but quite toxic to cats. A couple of years ago my partner and I spent a whole night at the emergency vet clinic (and a few hundred dollars) because one of our cats reacted badly to a flower bouquet she (my partner) received for her birthday. The sender of course didn't know and had no intention to harm, but I must say the association lingers, they keep on sending flowers every year and sadly most of the time we leave them out of the house because we love these animals. I love flowers, I love gifts and I hate to sound like the safety police, but hey, if it saves anyone a worried night at the vet it pays to say it. Lovely video, thank you Van!
I have always prided myself as a good gift giver. I love giving gifts and I really try to find the best, most meaningful gift for that person. Anyone can buy something nice and giving it to someone. It will be in that someone's garage sale later. But, the right gift will be in their casket. Thank you for spreading the word on proper gifting.
I got my sister her first phone when she turned 16. She wasn't expecting it and cried when I surprised her. It made me cry seeing her so happy. It took me a a couple months of planning trying to slowly get info about the model and colour she wanted. The notes definitely help. Like Van, my advice is to always keep an ear out and WRITE IT DOWN.
Instant sub. Your videos are probably the highest quality on UA-cam. Their ability to suck you in with simple, clean, and beautiful production... The way the occasional sounds have a rhythm with your voice and the way you allow us to mentally drift and daydream with you... The organization is fantastic. I haven't even mentioned your perfect gift-giving guide and how helpful it is. I wonder how many great moments people will share because they watched your video and knew which gift to give and HOW. You really focus on the how and I love that. Thanks dude.
Spot on advice. Best gift I ever received was a Christmas card with my friend and I painted on the front from a photo of when we met with Santa hats on. The gift is worthless to anyone else but the sentimental value it holds with me and the appreciation I have for an artist friend of mine to sit down and paint that for me is immeasurable.
This has just got to be one of the best videos you have done. Thankyou! Im sitting here on a fairly miserable autumn day in England and instead of thinking how cold it is, or how few leaves are left, or where has the sun gone - Im thinking of making little gifts for people I love, and not about poor poor me! Brilliant!!
This was such a positive way to spend a 15 minute break from cleaning my shop. Thank you I enjoy sharing and gifting and this lesson taught me little thing with big meanings that I’ve been overlooking. Looking forward to using some of these suggestion with attitude of surprising friends and loved ones. Thank you Van!
Awesome video Van! We were stoked to support the channel over at Better Than Belts. I’d say we’re expensive but not costly :) also a good combo of nice and thoughtful as a gift 🎁
Just watching this made me think about all of the extremely simple and meaningful gifts I could give to everyone important in my life. I believe a gift should represent your appreciation for the person you are giving it to.
Thanks Van, you are the modern poet/philosopher. Such truth and delivered with great humility. Incidentally, I brought and gave away one of your sweatshirts to a mate, he loves it, and it makes me smile every time I see him wear it. So good gifts give a return and keep giving.
You know, I was watching that episode of Seinfeld where Jerry and Elaine hook up and agree to be friends with benefits, right. In that episode Jerry has to get Elaine a gift for her birthday and he ends up getting her money. Meanwhile, and the reason I bring this up for this video, Krammer comes in with his present--gift wrapped for the surprise. She opens it up and it's the bench she had been hitting at. Krammer had it all down like a real pro: surprise, nice, thoughtful, made.
You honestly nailed it right in the coffin when getting your loved ones a gift. Being young and in a brand new relationship with no past experiences you’re learning as you go. I was the person to ask what my girlfriend wanted as a gift for her birthday or Christmas and it would make her upset by letting me know I wasn’t thoughtful enough haha. You have to pay attention just as you said and listen to the things they want (reasonable things of course and without breaking your piggy bank). Appreciate the video, keep them coming!
My giving love language is gifts. Ppl always ask me how I do it, and I haven’t been able to really explain it other than “you have to pay attention.” This video is a better and more full explanation of it. Love the engraving idea… I feel like I typically lean into “nice and thoughtful” and struggle with the “made” route… engraving things is kinda perfect for that. My people are about to feel so loved. Thank you for this!
I hugely echo your comment about knowing which flowers to get for your significant other (or anyone for that fact). My wife is not a fan of roses whatsoever and to be honest, has a deep love for roadside flowers or wildflowers in general. I told my sister this before my then girlfriend and I got married at the courthouse and my sister surprised her with a bouquet of very simple flowers to have in hand when we said 'I do.' I had a small simple boutonnière made of matching wildflowers myself and she was beyond over the moon. To this day, if I surprise my wife with a bouquet it's always something simple and small like the wildflowers. On the flip side, my favorite flowers are gerbera daisies and that's always what she surprises me with. It's amazing what simple yet thoughtful gestures like nothing someone's favorite something will do to their overall happiness.
I think the best time with gifts for me was when I started to enjoy giving them more then receiving them. Definitely some really good ideas and thoughts within this for successful gift giving!
This is a video I never knew I needed. I would consider myself a good gifter. But never knew there was a name for it. Love the postcard ideas. One of my greatest joys in life is to suprise someone with a gift. Thanks for the video Made my week
Pro tip: Know what flowers your man likes. You think women go crazy for flowers? You wanna see a grown man cry? I've given flowers go boyfriends and watched them fall apart with joy.
One year ago, I stumbled upon a video titled 'The Art of Gifting', and today, I have just rewatched it. Those 'rules' presented in the video are truly a masterpiece. I want to express my gratitude to Van Neistat for creating such a wonderful video.
Great job with the video - it does inspire people to give better gifts! The misconception in most people is it's gotta be expensive, which is a dream come true for most shops.
This is the kind of video that reminds me how much we stumble through life, un-thoughtful, un-examined. This is the kind of thoughtful introspection on a topic I hardly think about. I love the way your mind works Van, and thank you for reminding me that I need to do something kind and thoughtful for my girlfriend, who has been very good to me.
Love the video man. I'm not great at giving gifts and as someone getting married in a year, this'll be tremendously helpful for future occasions. Cheers Van.
This has got to be one of if not the best video he's ever made. I think it's because gift giving is a love language. And we all know that feeling of recieving a really good gift. And we all know that feeling of giving a really good gift. Idk ever since watching it I wanted to be better at giving gifts. One Christmas I gave a really good gift to my cousin and his fiancee at the time. Now wife. It was cookware. I had visited them before and it came up that they were looking into getting new cookware. So I got them a whole cookware set. And it felt really good. It was really cool giving them a gift they really wanted.
My girlfriend's birthday is coming up next month and while I've always thought of myself as an excellent gift giver, this has given me some additional ideas. Thanks Van!
I've always envied good gift givers. I consider myself an uninspired gift giver...I try, but I my mind just goes blank. "Nice, made, thoughtful" - if only I can remember this. Thanks
if everybody saw this video and used the advice, we would have a really nice world to live in. Yes I think it has that much value. Thanks Van, this gift was really nice, thoughtful and well made!
You made me think of an old friend ( 50 years) whom I’ve not seen for a very long time. I will mail him one of my smaller paintings. He is a play writer/improv actor who always appreciated my artistry.
Couldn’t help but smile watching this. As a not so great gift giver this gives some good insight on how to show people you really love them in with a gift to match
I love you, man… you’re a newfound inspiration for me. You probably won’t see this but know that your videos contain lots of inspiration for other artists
I just discovered you recently via Instagram and now your videos. Rarely do I say this, I LOVE THEM! The topics, scream from my soul, the presentation, the editing, your attitude. Keep doing this and the way you do it! Best regards from Luxembourg.
I handle a lot of book donations as part of my job, and I would like to let people know that writing personal messages in books can make them harder for different organizations to accept down the line. I frequently give books as gifts, and I often write personal messages on bookmarks or in separate envelopes.
Hey Van, thank you for making these videos for us. You clearly spend a lot of time and effort on them and they are really appreciated. It's really nice of you to share your hard-earned knowledge and experience with us.
Your videos are a treasure trove of wisdom and ideas. I’m gonna come back to this video everytime I find myself struggling to think of a perfect gift for someone.
by far the best explanation on gift giving, Thank you Van!.. could I also request a video of all your kits? That intro was therapy, brother.. Keep up the beautiful art!
I’ve been on UA-cam for years and years and have learned so much from different channels, but this is such a perfect video. One that I will refer to for the rest of my days. Thank you.
You had me all the way, until the end. But as I am writing this I think that everything we do, every moment we spend is a gift. Even if you don't love where you are, act with love. Act with the intent of love.
I never like or comment on any video and I have been watching UA-cam for years now. This video is amazing, thanks for giving away your knowledge in all the videos you do. Cannot wait for the next one!
love how practical this video is. the points are so general yet so impactful (at least they seem like they would be to me, havent tried them yet) on such a basic and frequent act. all presented in an amazing atmosphere coupled with great examples. 10/10 this is what i like to think the internet was made for.
I have to thank you Van. I don’t think much about this yesterday, but in the night this seeped in properly, and now for the first time in my life I’m looking forward to buying Christmas gifts
This is why you're the spirited man. Anniversary is coming. Nice, made and thoughtful present is coming. Terimakasih Mr. Van Neistat (that's thank you in Indonesia)
I get my flowers for my wife at Kroger. Supermarkets can have nice flowers at great prices. Part of flowers is knowing who you're giving them to, likes. If for example though you don't know them well, perhaps 1st,2nd, or 3rd date, red roses make a statement, but if she's not a red roses girl, then go with beautiful and unique. Any hints you can get or something to tie the flowers in what you have shared together make them even more special.
I’m a painter and I sometimes find myself not having enough money to get something really nice for my friends or family members and I’ll usually paint something for them as a gift. Often while working on said paintings I’ll be a little worried that they’ll be disappointed I didn’t actually go buy something but whenever I give them the gift they seem to like it more than bought gifts I’ve given them in the past. People really do appreciate hand made things and I think that’s beautiful
another great thing for flowers is to make the bouquet personally. For example if you know they like sunflowers and roses put them together it will make it extremely personal and will truly make them feel loved.
T-SHIRTS & SWEATSHIRTS: spiritedman.com
Thanks for the sweatsshirts! Love mine.
Amazing advice thanks!!
Van are you going to make more size Large Die Trying Sweat Shirts?
Make me feel loved van, even if you don’t love me , send me your merch 😇
That Better Than Belts bit was the cleanest and most organic transition into an ad I’ve ever seen in any video across the entirety of UA-cam.
That is not good. Idk where this guy lives, but where I live you have to clearly label what part is being paid for (i.e. an ad) and what part is not. I can't easily tell what his actual opinions are and what he is paid to say.
Yep. I even paused to research them and returned to the video.
that's not a compliment.
@@BlueBockserhe lives in America. Who cares what he thinks, don't buy it.
Yeah, normally I can see it coming, this one I didn't.
Love this video!
I immediately added these rules to my notes, and here they are for easy reference:
1. All gifts should contain an element of surprise
2. Respect the gifting Holy Trinity:
1. NICE
2. MADE
3. THOUGHTFUL
3. Made gifts should not be bigger than one's hand.
4. Dating and/or Monogramming a gift gives it extra power
5. Know what flowers your girl likes.
6. Take your time with books.
7. A Postcard COUNTS!
8. TWO DAYS
9. She will tell you.
10. Buy small gifts when you travel.
11. Expensive, not Costly
12. For KIDS: You pick the store, The kid picks the gift.
Gift receiving: Send a thank you note
The point of gift giving: Make people feel loved (even if you don't love them).
💪💪 \*bump\*
Came to the comments hoping a hero had done this. Thank you.
You da man!
Thanks g
Hero
As someone who considers themselves not a good gifter, I appreciate this Van. After watching this, I now feel I have the recipe to be a good one.. and I will be a good one! Much love
Same - immensely useful
Detto.
Agree. I found it helpful for the same reason.
my boyfriend sent me this and said it reminded him of my gifts over the years and i've never felt more honored. this video perfectly sums up my gift giving philosophy in far simpler terms than i've ever been able to come up with when asked by my loved ones!
i would add one last note: without fail, i have found that men love flowers too , and because flowers are such an unexpected gift for men, you can often ask them outright what flowers they like (without being too blatant with your intentions) and they will be happy to even just get to ponder the question. if they don't have favorite flowers you can always just choose something you think would look nice in their home. :)
This was honestly a life changer. More than just about gifting, it was almost a lesson on how to show love. Really cool. Thank you Van.
Wow, never thought of that. I’m taking notes on that one.
Speaking as someone who has a bit of a reputation as a great gifter, I think you pretty much hit it out of the park. Spoken like a true master.
Dear Van,
I'm not a gift person.
This changed my life. You've just made a lot of people in my life very happy, sometime in the future.
I'm sorry for being a consumer. I love your art. Good-luck.
Yours truly
I don’t want to be on-the-nose but watching this felt like receiving a gift.
Thank you, Van!
You can't always get what you want
I know. He mentioned my birthday march 11 and I felt so special ☺️
Can we talk about the Better than belts ad. This man is a genius, first time in the history of me using youtube I actually watched the ad. Amazing video I love gift giving
i dont think ive ever seen him so animated and happy in a vlog yet. love this video.
"Make people feel loved **even if you don't really love them**" lol good one Van.
Your tip about writing it down is spot on! I keep a running list of gift ideas (on my phone) for the important people in my life and I add to it all year long- then around the holidays or their birthday, I already have 5-8 things on the list to choose from for each person. I am not lying. Whenever I see you speaking, I have a big smile. It just hits differently because you tell it with so much affection and honesty.
No matter the gift, the gift giver used their time to think of me because they felt I was worth it. That is priceless. Great video!
The Spirited Man Channel is nice, thoughtful and made and a great gift for those that look forward to receiving it each week. This is a great video and something very useful for nearly everyone. Thanks Van!

This is a video I never knew I needed.
I would consider myself a good gifter. But never knew there was a name for it.
Love the postcard ideas.
One of my greatest joys in life is to suprise someone with a gift.
Thanks for the video
Made my week
I love how it’s obvious that Van had such an impact on Casey and influences how Casey sees and interacts with the world.
Pro tip: Know what flowers your man likes. You think women go crazy for flowers? You wanna see a grown man cry? I've given flowers go boyfriends and watched them fall apart with joy.
As someone who considers themselves a big time gift giver, you just helped me level up. Thanks Van!
I love Van's enthusiasm the way he describes those socks and the flowers.
A series of short videos on your kits would be amazing! Thanks for all your amazing videos Van!
One year ago, I stumbled upon a video titled 'The Art of Gifting', and today, I have just rewatched it. Those 'rules' presented in the video are truly a masterpiece. I want to express my gratitude to Van Neistat for creating such a wonderful video.

So much honesty from this man. The delivery of said honesty is very refreshing
The flower gift is a bit oldschool ... men like flowers too ! 💐🌻🌷🌸🌹🌺🌼
The wide angle shot of the flower shop on a computer screen just blew my f*cking mind
Just hands, expression, voice and wise words. Combined brilliantly.
This was wonderfully insightful! I’ve saved it in my playlists for referencing in the future! Thanks, Van! ❤️🎁
Thanks
This is, maybe the best video on the internet IMO. If everyone watched this video the world would be a better place.
I've saved about 4 videos in my many years on this website, and this one will be the fifth. Thank you in advance.
This video really expresses the joy in giving and receiving as it was originally intended.
Tangible ways to express love to people in our lives.
I was getting a gift for my dad’s 59th birthday today and this came to mind and I walked around the store repeating nice, thoughtful, made in my head.
if everybody saw this video and used the advice, we would have a really nice world to live in.
Watching your videos constantly puts smile on my face :)
Your channel is such a gem!
Van Neistat at his best. Thought provoking philosophy that is elegantly delivered.
This is one of the most genuine UA-cam videos out there. I love it!
I feel a vibe from this guy that makes sooo calm, relaxed, and really satisfied
Thank you.
Best advertisement I've seen on UA-cam. Advertisement should be an art, and you did it.
You had me all the way, until the end.
But as I am writing this I think that everything we do, every moment we spend is a gift. Even if you don't love where you are, act with love. Act with the intent of love.
Thank you Van!!! Much love and peace to you and your family
That pointer of women not liking roses is so true ... learnt this the hard way!
I never like or comment on any video and I have been watching UA-cam for years now. This video is amazing, thanks for giving away your knowledge in all the videos you do. Cannot wait for the next one!
Great to see you smiling again Van!!
As someone who has lived much of their life watching UA-cam videos, this has to be one of my favourite ones (I hate commenting too)!
Probably the best ad I've ever seen on a YT channel. Well done.
love how practical this video is. the points are so general yet so impactful (at least they seem like they would be to me, havent tried them yet) on such a basic and frequent act. all presented in an amazing atmosphere coupled with great examples.
Thanks for helping us become more spirited Van. Onward and upward!
I love Van’s smile while he’s talking about flowers
This is honestly one of the most enjoyable videos I've ever watched on youtube. Thanks, Van.
Honestly the best gift giving guide I’ve ever heard. I’m glad I found this before the holidays
Easily one of the best channels.
That was the smoothest segue into an ad I've ever watched, and the rest of the video was just as smooth
This is probably the 10th time I have watched this. It is so perfect. I am making a gift right now for my brother, and it fits in your hand!!!
Nobody asked, everybody needed.
Bravo!
I'm happy Van's happy. Happier. Happy today. Hopefully happy tomorrow. And the next day. This was really good.
another great thing for flowers is to make the bouquet personally. For example if you know they like sunflowers and roses put them together it will make it extremely personal and will truly make them feel loved.
Van you need to make a podcast (but no interviews.. your thoughts and experiences) 😉.
Even if you had to pay for it I would listen.
