Thank you for making this excellent how-to! I have a 88' Volvo 240dl and replacing my bearings for the first time today. Feeling more confident and ready to go after watching this video. Sometimes the Hanes manual just isn't enough...you need to see someone doing the steps!
Just watched the video again to get things straight before tackling my 1984 Volvo 240 Estate, just clicked over into its 40th year! didn't have a press so (very carefully) used the freeze/heat method as I didn't have any suitable sockets etc tot use a drift, you have made a really clear and informative video without any macho stuff, a rarity on YT these days :)
I changed the bearings on my 93 240 yesterday using this video as a guide. Very helpful-thanks! I couldn’t tell which way the rubber seal goes on so hopefully I did it right. Thanks again 😹
I am doing a front wheel bearing on my 1992 240 wagon very soon, i did both rear wheel bearings a while back. That wasn't very hard either, but a hydraulic press would have been nice for me to have for that job. Thanks for showing us how it's done :)
Ive done many in the past (other cars) without a press... and its certainly doable... but its so much more controlled with a press... and really enjoyable! Thanks for watching!
I did this yesterday after watching your video twice. I have no press and also no perfect fitting socket set to tap the outer baring in. so I had cut the old one and heated that up so it could be bent a bit smaller. this worked perfect to tap the new one in with a piece of wood on-top of that. thanks cool dude
I would recommend packing these kinds of bearings with grease, instead of just coating them in grease. Put a slob of grease in your palm and rub the bottom of the bearing against your palm until it comes out the top of the bearing. Just a little tip to make your bearings last a little longer:)
@@SeasideGarage i think by the book its the «correct way» of doing roller bearings like these, you can also just coat them in grease and it’ll work fine but they wont last as long. Packing them keeps the whole bearing greased at all times:)
Surprised this video has so few views. Maybe just because of the specificity. Instructions very clear you gave me a lot of confidence for when the time comes for me to do this
Nice car. I have a 244dl my front bearings started screaming today. This vedio helps out alot. I didn't know I need to suspend the hard brake lines. Would have been catastrophic. Thank you.
Beautifully explained and shot! My 84 244 has developed a whining noise plus the hubs are hot and I suspect this is the problem. I'm going to attempt this thanks to your vid!
I love that Volvo. Absolutely love it. I must get one before they become too expensive. Great video as always! Even more important to reuse gloves at the moment since they are so hard to buy! All the best!
Yes the Volvo is a gem! I dont think it will be long before they are impossible to buy for cheap... But right now they cost almost nothing here! They are so versatile and strong..
Thanks for making these videos. My 240 has already benefitted greatly from them. I am interested in knowing more about this blue scissor lift you are using
Yes, the 240 brake system was built with safety in mind. It has two fluid lines to each of the front calipers, so that if there is any type of brake failure you will still have one of the two lines working as it should. It works this way... both same front caliper pistons (either upper or lower) connect to one of the back rear calipers, then the other set of calipers up front connect to the other caliper in the rear. So this way if one of the two brake systems goes out you will still have a brake system.
👍 👌 Nice and good video of the work. And greetings from Sweden. You are welcome to the country and i hope you will get a nice time and trip and se a lot of things and of the country.
Thank you! We actually ended up not going to Sweden this time... It doesn't seem as the best time for traveling... but when stuff hopefully gets more normal we sure will!
@@SeasideGarage Ok. Yes it is a little hard time now since the fkn covid. But i think and belives the country of Sweden still is in place when time is on and you can take a trip to that country 😉.
Really nice job on this, I appreciate your enthusiasm and that you seem to genuinely enjoy working on the Volvo. I'm going to attempt this job soon, and I was wondering if you need a special socket for that castle nut? Much appreciated!
I had an Austin 1800 on which the front o/s bearing collapsed whilst I was driving - scary. When I pulled the hubcap off to see what had happened I had one hand at the top and one hand at the bottom - the bottom hand was showered with red hot ball bearings. Since then if T remove a hubcap its always one hand either side lol
I did not see that you adjusted the tension on the wheel bearing, and you potentially overtightened it when you tried to get the hole in the correct position. Tighten it first as you did, then back it off. Spin the bearing and keep tensioning the castle nut until it becomes quite difficult to move by hand. After having done that, back it off maybe a quarter turn so it spins freely. If it does not align with the hole, then do NOT tighten it in order to align it. Loosen it. If you do not this you will burn up your bearings and will have to redo the entire job.
@@SeasideGarage hej igen, vis du går nogle mangler nogle motor projekter har jeg en b21 og b23 stående med manuel 5 trins overdrive til dem begge, kunne det være noget?😁
Came here to find out how to remove the outer race from the hub, love your slow and methodical explanations. Will be back to watch more.
