  • It is one thing to build a custom Sprinter Conversion van in your backyard, it is another to build it in a foreign country with a small bag of tools. This was one of my most enjoyable shoots as you could see the drive and passion of these two world travelers.

The acoustics when you shut that side door. THAT is what tells the story of the insulation. Nice job.

As impressive as the build is I was just so distracted by how happy these two are. It's so obvious they're doing what they love most with the one they love most. If I had a choice of having that, or such a great van, I wouldn't have to think twice.

I think this is still my favourite van dwelling video. Nice simplicity, open floor space for a bit of dancing. The steel salad bowl, aluminum backsplash, water pump, and skylight are really nice touches. I don't get why people don't have skylights when you can lay down and see the stars out in nature. At 6'6" (~198 centimeters) tall, I'm very jealous of being able to lay down width-wise in the van. No real drawers or shelves either. Definitely a nice little setup.

This build leaves me completely cold, but the best van builds are the ones that best meet the needs of the folks who use that van. They’re incredibly proud of it, so it’s clearly a great success.

    Wow!
This was so coool! I've spent my life dreaming of an Adventure Van & traveling. I helped my Mom as a teen raise 10 kids after a tragedy w/my Dad, put myself thru college, taught school for many yrs & raised my kids. Later, I did nursing along w/Music Therapy w/Hospice patients & the ill- so a life time of hard work.Today, I am readying for FUN, traveling & experiencing God's Creation, & seeing grandbabies thru out America. I really enjoyed your little UA-cam here I'll retire at the end of the yr (except for playing piano & doing Gigs!). Thnx, for all the neat ideas shared & I'm looking fwd to nxt yr when my 73 yr old hubby & I find a simple Van that will be easy to manage when we vacation.

I LOVE the simplicity of this van. Love the size and practicality of it as well. I want to be able to travel, but I have dreaded having to tow something huge or drive something huge, ya know? Seems scary. This option would be so much easier and cheaper as well.

I really like this couple! Since it's just the two of them and they are traveling all the time I don't think it would be much of an issue to stop someplace to use a toilet and they probably can stay at camp grounds/gyms/truck stops/etc. to take showers. I think it was smart of them to not put everything in there before they started because now they can add things as they find that they need them (like a wood stove). I hope they do an update after they've been on the road for a long time because I'll be curious to see what they add.

Hi Richard and Sophie and welcome to Canada. Nobody mentioned the fact that you two are climbers. I paused the vid to look at your library; Moab, Red Rocks, our Canadian Rockies plus other climbing-oriented books. Not to mention the great photos on the inside of the van door all looking like serious rock climbing territory. Climb safe and have a great time.
Sophie, your accent is charming as hell; French with a Kiwi inflection? I lived for four great years in Paris and I'm guessing, but I love it whatever it may be. Richard's a lucky man and I'm sure you're a lucky woman or the two of you wouldn't be doing the globetrotting you are doing together.
    Loved the haka bit.

This couple is so cute! And I can see that they put a lot of thought into everything. Very cool! I love seeing the excitement on their faces as they describe what they've done. And the anticipation on his face for a fireplace was adorable! One slight improvement they could make to the table is to just simply move that string to where it hooks straight upwards into a hook in the ceiling instead of the van door so then it would block the table less since it would not cut across. Then they could just unhook the string to fold the table up.

Though simple in design, the table on the door is brilliant.

Man, there's so much I like about this build, not to mention they are a beautiful smart couple.
    - love the marine hatch. more likely waterproof, use as a crow's nest, climb in/out in case of accident.
    - absolutely love that they just went out and bought an ikea kitchen cabinet, and whacked it in and use the stainless for a fireproof easy care backsplash.
    - and I am definitely a chest fridge/freezer guy. The savings in Ah are up to 10x. I'd prefer a drawer chest fridge under the k. cabinet, but theirs works.
    - love that they've been inspired by a walkaround in Ikea too, usually all their stuff is lightweight and super functional.
    - the plastic tubs are also all you need for neat and tidy storage.
    - I think many builds focus on building solidly to last 10+ years. However, the truth is we often want to change layout or see something better and want to change within 1-2 years. In this respect, I am very much into lightweight mobile pod design...so that you can take out the kitchen cabinet, fridge, bed, etc. This means broader functionality if you still live in a house and only use the van as a camper for shorter trips several times a year. It also means when the weather is great, you can set up under an annexe.
And finally, it means a cheap and fast build....so more time for travel and making a dollar.
    - and lightweight minimalism is my main criteria. I like a sense of space, especially for when it rains and you are stuck inside more than you'd prefer.

Unless you like to sleep curled up into a ball you'll need a fairly large car! I'm 1.90 and bed size restrictions are one of the main reasons why I haven't even rented a motorhome yet, let alone considered building or buying one. I can sleep on a 190 cm mattress if I can let my feet dangle out of the bed but 2 m is much better and 2.20 is really nice. The commercial motorhomes I took a look at had something like 183 cm!
So for the time being I'm stuck with a tent. Has the definite advantage that I can just pack it up and catch a train or bus instead of having to drive. I mostly camp on festivals and driving home on a Sunday evening after having spent the whole weekend dancing and everything isn't something I recommend!

Follow your dream and dont let anyone or anything tell you otherwise! Height is a disadvantage but things like a hammock attached to the roof of the van taking up the total width is a great way to have maximum space when beds not in use, but likewise maximum length when bed is needed

    • @TinekaJasonPalmer
      @TinekaJasonPalmer 6 років тому +1

Nice job good planning I've been vann ING for 30 plus years and never see anything new on UA-cam I actually saw a couple of things I hadn't thought of like using bilge pump for sink .I feel dumb since I lived on a sailboat for three years! You forgot the head! Must have! I use since vans are so small the smallest toilet bucket with seat and lid 14 '' wide 16 tall. Solid waste only use plastic bags no dumping no cleaning no smell if adding kitty litter to bag. Urine goes in laundry soap bottles are free at laundromat in trash can when they get rank dispose , my whole bathroom cabinet including toilet litter paper and urine bottles is only approx 18 x18x18 inches easy easy easy good job on van nice backsplash

If you had two parallel sofas that turned into a bed at the back, with a removable table in the middle, you would have a bedroom and living room area and more hall way space if wanted.
There could be storage below the sofas and on a long cabinet above each sofa too.

We just charge the secondary battery using the car alternator. We have an isolator to make sure we don't empty the main battery. We don't have solar panels because it is a lot less stealthy and we drive enough to have enough power for the fridge, the lights, the CO detector and charging our phones/tablets.

Is all this stealth really needed? I mean most places you would park a van like this in the night people would either think campers or burglars at worst. I mean how often do you roam quiet neighborhoods to park outside someone's driveways? Personally I think I would get catastrophic without Windows - make do yes, ideal?

Hi Richard and Sophie, my wife and I travel the world with our bicycles - packing them in boxes before loading on a plane and then cycling across our destination country. I love how you brought a box of tools from NZ to build your transport-of-choice. Long may you roam. Cheers.

Clara Murray give a person a fish and they eat for a day, teach them how to fish and they eat for a lifetime and so do their progeny. You have the ability to do it yourself, you just need the desire, where there's a will there's a way. And ask for help but do it yourself, life is not just about the destination but also the journey. im definitely interested in getting the help. ive been trying to figure out ways to do this for many years. i have bought 3 rvs and didn't like them at all. ive been looking at converting a shuttle van with all dark tinted windows but i have no carpentry or plumbing or electrical or any other kinds of manly skills to do it. what kind of money are you charging for helping people build our own custom travel home? i live in eastern CT so im very far from Alaska and Canada though and i don't like cold weather so i don't want to go up there in the winter! if you are interested, reach out to me because i might be in the market if you are still around. i haven't found my vehicle yet, but i have been shopping and test driving them. ive definitely settled on what i want, but now it's just a matter of finding the specific one for me that's in my budget and near me. also, who did you hire to do that 2" spray insulation project?

Just incredible. Spray foam is a must and 1st video I have seen that it is mentioned. I have a spray foam company. Note: get estimates from a professional, we find we do the job for the same price, or real close to attempting to do it yourself. Professionals will trim and clean up, you want closed cell foam, approx. one dollar per inch a square foot. Do your math, there is the price. You will need at least 2 inches, includes everything. If they say the job is too small, remind them you can drive it to their location.

Well I guess being short is an advantage in stealth camping! Being 182 cm and 180kg. ;-) even a large van like this would be cramped for me.

    • @Bespoke-creations
      @Bespoke-creations 7 років тому +4

Hi Timothy. The van is actually a high roof one, which means you have approx. 1.88m (74") interior height (taking into account the insulation and wood). You would fit ;)

I am on my second camper, the first I had for three years some 20 years ago and I now have a VW T5. I am always amazed by how obsessed with blocking out light camper users are. I have seen the aurora in northern Scotland when no other vans did because they had all their curtains drawn, I see sunsets and sunrises and dark skies full of stars as my neighbours sit in electric light watching TV soaps. I travel to experience the differences from my urban life, not to replicate it!

We love to do that too! However if you end up sleeping in a town (sometimes it's hard to avoid) you need to block the light from the street lights. And if you sleep in a residential area where overnight stay isn't really welcomed having curtains enables you to go unnoticed.

Get some small round tins with clear lids and magnet on the back to put your spices in and on your steel wall. And magnet knife holder. But you did a wonderful job. Love your kitchen. Another couple in a sprinter put a small stove in which gives them a small oven along with the two burners.love the size of bed you gave.

ron werner besides the effect that these stoves aren't made for small CLOSED rooms! They will kill you over night via CO gases.

Nice van. Just a couple of ideas for upgrades for you. I lived in my van for over a year and also used block out curtains to divide cabin from the back. I found it to be a pain in the ass. So I upgraded and installed a pocket door. OMG what a difference it made...I wish I had done it from the beginning. Also...regarding your two little white cabinets over your bed....I would upgrade them to just one big long one and then mount a thin flat panel TV on the drop down door f the cabinet. So you have a TV to watch movies etc while siting or laying down in bed. Then you can just lower the door/TV to access the cabinet. I'm sure there are a number of other things also but for now I felt those were two very easy upgrades that would make your van life easier and more comfortable. One other note...if you do decide to put the wood stove behind the passenger seat( an idea I really like) then a pocket door would make even more sense. I personally would not feel at ease having a curtain behind a stove. The table mounted to the sliding door was genius!!!
