Hey chief Carl Northeast Ohio here you know I have learned so much from you by watching you listening to you I am the one just by watching you you taught me how to whip finish I noticed something on this video though Steelers fan buddy really LOL LOL I love what you do keep doing it again I've learned a lot from you but go Browns LOL LOL LOL
Hey Smalljaw, You are a great teacher! Love your vids. Could you do a demo of using the whip finisher....real slow so it's easier to see for us beginners? Also, where do you find jig heads with hair collars? I can only find barbed collars. Thanks.
Thank you for the compliment, I truly appreciate it!!!!!!! There are a lot of good videos showing how to use the whip finisher, I could do one but I don't have the right camera. The camera needs to be mounted overhead so you can see what is going on but I will try to rig something up and see if I can do it. I pour my own jig heads but if you look at some of my other videos you'll see I tie on heads with a ring and barb collar as well as no collar and once with just a barb collar. If I tie on a collar with no ring or ball and it is just a barb, I either add super glue to the collar before laying my thread base or if I want my material to flare out I will cut out a groove in the collar, you don't need a special collar to tie hair.
I love your vidoes man, you make some beautiful looking jig creations! I'm a newbie to tying my own and I find your videos very helpful and full of info!
Tony Cohn Thanks for the kind words!! I'm glad the videos are helping you as that is what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to give new people as much info as possible and also provide ideas to the more experienced angler. Thanks again and if there is something specific that you want to see let me know and I'll try to do it if I can.
Nailed it once again! Is craft fur the same as crinkle cut faux fur? And for someone interested in trying out jig tying such as myself, what would you recommend as a basic all-purpose size jig for LM and SM bass (I live in MI) and which fur or bucktail is easiest for a beginner to tie? Want to give it a shot and I’d like to pick up a handful of one basic size jig and a few different colors of recommended material to try my untalented hand at tying before spending a bunch of money on stuff only to find out I may suck at it, lol. Your videos make it look so easy but I’m not naive to the fact that it’s not at as easy as you make it look. Thanks and keep the videos coming!
Thank you your kind words, I really appreciate it!! Crinkle cut faux fur is a little difference, the material is a little heavier to keep the crinkle look. I really like extra select craft fur, I get mine from Barlow's Tackle most of the time but Cabela's sells it as well, I'll leave a link to it. An all purpose size jig I'd say for LM and SM would be a 1/4oz jig, others will say 3/8oz but 1/4oz will get more bites so it makes it easier to learn. Craft fur and bucktail both are good and each has its own issues, with bucktail the material flares out and if not tied right it can easily be pulled out from the thread. Craft fur has a lot of "underfur" that can present an issue but if you take your time both will be good to use for a beginner. I've been doing this a long time but this isn't a talent that you either have a gift for or don't like musical instruments or sports, tying is an acquired skill that with plenty of practice anyone can do. So get some craft fur and a bucktail or two along with some thread and practice, you'll get the hang of it and advance quickly. www.cabelas.com/product/fishing/fly-fishing/fly-tying/synthetics/pc/104793480/c/104721480/sc/104340780/i/103889880/hareline-extra-select-craft-fur/743670.uts?slotId=3
Hi Smalljaw. I was wondering if there is a good substitute for fly head cement. Would contact cement from a hardware store suffice? I just ran out and need sum asap. I live nowhere close to a fly shop.
Jeff Bruyere Sally Hansen's "Hard As Nails" clear nail polish. It is harder than other brands and works fantastic. I also like Loctite brush-on super glue.
