Congrats on your success!!!! The small marabou jigs are very effective but are overlooked for a variety of reasons and so the fish don't get conditioned to them. Thanks for watching and I really, really appreciate the feedback, I hope you tag another 6lber!!!
Thank you for the compliment, it means a lot!!!! I hope you get on 'em!!! This is one of my "skunk repellent" smallmouth jigs, if the water is clear this jig will get bit.
What pre-made jig heads would you suggest to use for hair jigs in 3/32 and 1/8? I don't have a way to pour my own. I just wondered which you thought would make the best Maribou's? Thanks for the great videos!!
Thanks Joe!!! A simple ball head jig will work perfectly fine for a marabou jig. You can also get whatever jig head with the hook you want from a custom guy. Go to Tackle Underground in the wire baits section and ask if anyone can make jig heads for you.
Dale, click the link, ua-cam.com/video/l2sUcdqc8Y0/v-deo.html it is a tank test of the layered marabou jig which will look just like this one. Marabou jig tied in this manner all have the same type of action in the water. I'm in the process of cleaning my tank so you can look at the other tank test to give you an idea of what that will look like in the water.
Is there any kind of hackle or any other feather? I can have extended a little farther past the bend that when it’s in water it’ll still have a breathing type of movement almost like a tail either moving really fast twitch or like a slow waving action?
I don't know of any other feather but there are different materials. From what you described I'd say use craft fur but it depends on how large the jig you are using with it.
Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it!! I get my marabou from Barlow's Tackle most of the time and it is the Hareline blood quill. www.barlowstackle.com/Hareline-Marabou-Strung-Blood-Quills-P3588.aspx
@@smalljaw this is very old but I’ve found the last year or so (maybe bc of Covid?) WAPSI has had superior marabou quills lately, but the hairline is still good stuff. Have you noticed a difference?
@@notsure8327 I will never buy any material that is from Wapsi anymore. I got some mallard flank that was on the small side from Hareline Dubbin. They sent me a replacement pack of mallard flank along with some decals. I let Wapsi know of the poor quality of not just their blood quill marabou but also their barred neck hackle. Not only didn't they replace it but they never even responded to me. I will not give them another red cent if I can help it.
Do you use a drying agent on the maribou? every time i tried to make a hair jig it shrunk in the water and had very little action. thanks for your time
Thanks for watching. Yes, hair will compress and the action is very subtle which is what makes them so effective. A bait with a ton of action is great when fish are active but most of the time they are neutral so a small easy meal is difficult to pass up even when not actively feeding. Then you have cold water, in that situation the baitfish move slower and something with a subtle movement looks natural, something with a lot of action looks out of place.
Go to Barlow's tackle, they care Hareline Dubbin marabou and bucktails as well as calf tails. The bucktails from Hareline aren't really big but the hair is good quality.
Hello Smalljaw. I was wondering what you use for a base pin in your molds for an FG12 weed guard. I was instructed to mold the weed guard into the head when pouring. Obviously this would mean tying the jig with the weed guard in. I noticed that even with your smaller weed guards you put them in after tying. What’s your method please.
On the molds that use the FG-12 weed guard I purchased a length of 5/64" diameter steel rod and cut my own 1.5" long pins. On molds that call for an FG-30 weed guard I had to take regular base hole pins to a machine shop. I had the bottom of the pin cut off and I had the top 1/8" of the pin turned down to 5/64" diameter.
I use Danville 210 denier flat waxed nylon thread for just about all of my bass jigs. For crappie jigs I use 140 denier for the larger ones and 70 denier for smaller ones like 1/32oz.
Ok Small jaw, I'm confused. Is Marabou a duck? Or some other feathered mamel? Cause I was under the impression that it was from the deer family. Or are you tying Feather jigs and just using the name? Or should you be tying a "Hair jigs and calling it Marabou. I'm stumped.
Thank you for watching and the question!!! Marabou is from a Turkey, there are different grades like blood quill, extra select, wooly bugger, and mini, here I use blood quill which will work for most hair jigs. Just to be clear, the marabou I use comes from a Turkey and the type I use most often is blood quill, but if I use another type it will be extra select but they are the 2 I use and all come from the Turkey.
There's a lot of guys on You Tube that can tie a good marabou jig, but not many that can properly explain how they do it! Smalljaw da man!
Great teacher of his craft Vary believable! Great speaking voice easy to learn! Down to earth person!
Thank you very much David!!!!
That was a cool how you tied it on. Good looking jig. I'll be trying this for sure. Thanks!
I just got done tying this a few hours ago and just caught a six pound smallmouth. Great video

Nice to see you back, nice tie will try this one
Thank you for the support!!!! This is very good on pressured waters, not many use this type of jig and it is the one hair jig I like in warm water.
Could I use rod wrapping thread, or is the fly thread actually special and better?
Nice! First post!!! Brilliant tutorial Smawjaw!
Thank you for the compliment, I appreciate it!!! If there is something you would like to see just let me know, if I can do it I will.

That jig would definitely work on the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania
Thank you Rich!!! That is where I use it most of the time!!!

smalljaw Thanks
the marbou was about as long as the feathers I guess I have to tie a few to get it right
Is the marabou a blood quill or bulk plume? Was looking at barlows and didnt know what style would be best?
Blood quill is the best for tying this jig. The Hareline brand is what I use.
Thanks smalljaw
