Love your videos! I have been tying trout flies for more than 12 years but just recently moved to bass jigs both hair and rubber/ silicone. Please keep the videos coming!
Thank you Hank!!! The color pattern of this jig is to mimic the look of minnow going through thermal shock. You probably don't see it in Florida but up here when the water temp falls into the low 40s a lot of minnows will end up in thermal shock. The silver scales will have a purple hue along with blues and greens. I don't know what the fish see it as but the color will work really well. We will fish tubes for smallmouth and one of the best colors during that cold water period is smoke purple and this jig is my take on that color.
Hello! Since I have already made more than 30 thousand jigs, I can give an opinion for sure! It was very good, but should put glue during the assembly and use a smaller amount of line. The flashabou is an upper matrial to the crystal flash for the making of this bait. The tip is !!!
Looks great I would take a purple Sharpie and paint the top of the white wraps to match pruple line👍 I'll definitely be trying a few of these badboys thanks for sharing
Sehr schöner Minnow.Hast du auch Minnow 's mit Bucktail in Kombination mit Nayat und Grizzli Sattelfedern? Ich freue mich immer wenn du ein neues Muster vorstellst...Grüße aus der Schweiz...Chris
I'd love to try bouncing that jig in front of some flounders. Especially with a Gulp swimming mullet or curly tail trailer for scent and a wiggly tail. I caught one on a bucktail like that today.
have you ever tried any other new material to tie these ? Some of the other hairs on the market now. going to tie up a couple of these and see if they work in S.C. in Dec Thanks
The answer to your question is yes. I've tied similar patterns on that same head using craft fur and the Fish Skull Faux Bucktail. In your water I'd bet craft fur would work well as it has a really nice action with very little movement.
@@toddcarl1779 On this mold the eye sockets are made for 5/32" eyes. That is what I was saying, I don't determine the eye size, the mold does. The ultra minnow mold uses 5/32" eyes for all cavities.
Always enjoy watching your videos! Thx for sharing. Question... I am wanting to change my style s mold to accept flat eye hooks. Is that a possible modification? Thanks for you time.
Thanks for watching!!! That modification is possible but it isn't the easiest because you may have to reposition the entire hook slot to keep the eye out of the cavity. Lay the hook you want in the mold and see if the entire eye clears the head, you may have to move it forward a little but one you have the location figured out it is just drilling out the area for the hook eye to sit in.
Great work as usual. I notice that your bobbins pay out thread smoothly and with little pulling out on your part. My bobbins require more pull and often pull my hair and flash out of place. Do I just gently bend the arms out on my bobbins to reduce the pull required for a smoother pay out while tying? Did you get a bigger whip finish tool? Don’t think I have seen that one before? Thx for all your help. KT
Ken Tyler, thank you for the compliment, it is always appreciated!!! I use a Griffin Supreme Ceramic bobbin, it has a metal tube with a ceramic insert, I like the griffin bobbins for the very reason you bring up, they are smooth. I've been using that bobbin for a good while now, I also like a Stonfo but the Griffin is better. Anyway, you can try gently spreading out the arms of the bobbin a little bit to ease up the tension or you can put some WD-40 on a cloth and wipe the spool inserts down with it, that may allow the spool to spin more freely. You also are correct, I do have a larger whip finish tool, I've had it for a little while now, I should have gotten one a long time ago but hindsight is 20-20.....LOL!!! Thanks for watching and for the questions, I appreciate it and I hope this helps!!
Thank you for watching, I really appreciate it!! I use Flashabou Accent most of the time but I also use the Krystal flash UV flash, check out the link. www.barlowstackle.com/Flashabou-Accent--P1275.aspx
I fish for rocky river smallmouth, that is where 95% of my hair jig patterns came to being. This jig will work all year as long as you have some water clarity, the purple works best in water under 50 degrees. In the cold water the crawfish burro in the mud under rocks so the smallmouth target minnow forage almost exclusively. During this cold water period when the water dips into the 40s the baitfish go through a change in color and get a purple and greenish hue, I've been told it is thermal shock and it makes sense since it happens when the water turns cold. I've tried green hues with very little success but purple works well as does blue and green, blue and green together seems to work as well as purple but green or blue by themselves not so much. As the water warms into the 50 degree range I'll go with the other head I showed on this video, and that is the dark smoke back and the colors will be the same except I'll use flashabou instead of Krystal flash and the back color will be black bucktail instead of purple.
Purple isn't available in the thread that I use which is Danville 210 flat waxed nylon. Even if I could get purple, I probably wouldn't use it on this. That darker color thread would be too prominent, and it would take away the subtleness of the pattern.
David, I don't have a good storage system for materials to be honest. I have boxes on a shelf, 1 with tails, one with synthetics and one for flash materials. A video would take all of 30 seconds...LOL!!! Thank you for the suggestion though. I will keep this in mind should I find a way to better organize with the room I have available.
No sir, thank you for watching!!!! I wouldn't do it if I thought nobody was getting anything out of it. So thank you again for posting a positive comment, I truly appreciate each and every one!!
Hello ! I watched your videos on UA-cam about jig, congratulations, very detailed and with incredible quality. I'm from Brazil, and I have a small fish products business, I need to find a bucktail supplier for me to import from the USA. Could you recommend me some? God blesses.
Thank you!! I'm sorry as I buy my material retail and you sound like you need a bulk supplier. You can inquire about it from barlowstackle.com/ . They may be able to help you directly or point you in the right direction.
Another work of art! How do you get the shading on the jighead? I assume you sprinkle in the purple? And do you do it at the same time as the pearl or as a separate operation? Thanks
Daren, I do the pearl by dipping the head in a fluid bed with white pearl powder first. Then I load a small artist brush up with candy purple and apply a little heat to the back of the jig and then tap the brush so the powder falls from the bristles and onto the top of the jig. You don't want to apply too much heat or it will scorch the pearl color so you only heat a little so the paint sticks and then you bake the finish on and the candy purple will smooth out and harden on its own. I hope this helps.
I'm guessing that you are using a heat gun and not a torch? Also, what brand of powder paint do you use? I've used only Pro Tech and it seems to be very inconsistent. Didn't know what else might be out there that's both good and more cost effective.
Daren, I use a propane torch. To me it is easier as I can see the flame which makes it easier for me to gauge. I simply keep a low flame and by moving the head closer to, or further away, from the flame it allows me to easily regulate the heat. I use pro-tec as well as Columbia coatings for my powder paints, on this one I use Columbia coating pearl, and Pro-Tec candy purple. Most powders are the same, I like Columbia coatings pearl colors because it has a deeper look but the consistency differs between colors of all the powders because the pigments used have different densities which is why you see one powder that remains fluffy while another settles and compacts really fast. I hope that makes sense to you.
I'm currently working on a tank I'm getting set up. The hard part is trying to get good light along with a good recording angle. Probably August or September before the first underwater videos will be up.
I pour and paint these myself, if you don't want to make them you can go to Tackle Underground. There are plenty of custom lure makes there in the wire baits section that would be able to help you out.
That’s a great jig Dan. Thank you for the lesson sir !

What size eyes do you use? What size eye would you use on 1/4 or 3/8 oz? Thank you. Good video.
Thanks Todd!! Eye size is dictated by the size of the eye sockets on the jig. If there are no sockets I don't add eyes.

This jig looks awesome! What mold do you use to cast your jigs?
I have around 40 molds or so and for this jig I used the Ultra Minnow jig mold.
