Wine Review: Selbach-Oster Bernkasteler Graben Riesling Grosses Gewachs 2021

- In our tasting today we are looking at a wine from Mittlemosel in Germany. The wine is from a highly respected producer called Selbach Oster. A dry (trocken) Riesling, it is from the renowned Grosses Gewachs, Graben. The vineyard neighbors the legendary Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard and the old Riesling vines here produce incredibly concentrated fruit. The wine that our Wine Director David Allen MW is tasting today is Selbach Oster's 2021 Bernkasteler Graben Riesling Grosses Gewachs.
Selbach-Oster is a German wine producer located in the Mosel Valley, a wine region famous for extremely steep slopes, slate soils, and Riesling. The Selbach family has been producing wine in the region for almost 400 years.
Selbach-Oster owns 24 hectares (59 acres) of well-known vineyard land planted mainly to ungrafted Riesling and some Pinot Blanc in the Middle Mosel. Regarded as the "golden mile", the steep, south-facing hectares stretch from Zeltingen to Bernkastel and include the vineyards Zeltinger Himmelreich, Zeltinger Schlossberg, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Domprobst.
Selbach-Oster produces a full range of Riesling wine styles, from completely dry to botrytized dessert wines. Its style aims to express the high minerality of Mosel Riesling with relatively low alcohol. Indigenous, wild yeast is used to ferment the hand-picked fruit after harvest and half of the wine produced spends time in large oak barrels called foudres.

There’s a 2012 in my local wine shop, it’s an Auslese , and from the Zeltingen ( Sonnenuhr), will try it. Talking about Riesling, there were also two bottles of Keller Riesling Trocken 2021 that went on sale in and within seconds they were gone!
2012 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese, sounds fantastic WS aggregated critics score of 92/100 and a wine that probably has another 20-25 years of life left ahead of it.
