Wine Review: Dominio de Tares 'La Sonrisa de Tares' Godello Bierzo 2022
To day Wine-Searcher's Wine Director, David Allen MW brings you a Spanish smlie in the form of a white wine from Bierzo. The wine in question is Dominio de Tares 'La Sonrisa de Tares' Godello Bierzo 2022.
Since it was established in 2000, Bodegas Dominio de Tares has been worked with the Mencía, Godello and Prieto Picudo grape varieties in the Bierzo DO and the Castile and León VT. These areas of north-western Spain have long traditions of winemaking and the work of Dominio de Tares has helped to rejuvenate and preserve these traditions, going on to produce unique wines whose quality is increasingly gaining international recognition.
Dominio de Tares' vineyards are located at an average altitude of 600 meters, on hillsides preferably south-facing with slate and gravel terrain. The winery currently has 30 hectares of its own vines, but also works with a number of small growers. The Mencía variety that comprises the bulk of their production comes primarily from 40-90 year old vines with some special plots at 110 years old.
The Godello vines were, however, planted in the early days of the winery and surround the facility. They are trained on trellises, and are the result of a careful selection of the best soil types for this variety. The Godello vines are now fully mature and produce the fruit for the winery's two white wines, Dominio de Tares Blanco and La Sonrisa.

    Great stuff! A fascinating winery. On the higher end of their repertoire, the 2014 Vinedo Chadwick is displaying superb tension and complexity ten years on, and really goes to show how Chilean wine can excel!

    • @winesearcher
      @winesearcher День тому

      I wouldn't try to suggest this is in the same league as Vinedo Chadwick, but I did think it showed what I've seen with the wines of Los Vascos, Luis Philippe Edwards and others. Namely that at this entry level, Chilean Cabernet Sauvignons show distinct varietal character and offer decent drinking at a good price. i guess it is a sign of a top winery if they can excel at every quality level.

    Sounds like a lovely wine but not very typical for Chablis. Maybe this will be more typical going forward given climate change and warming temperatures? Maybe we’ll need to start seeking north-facing vineyards if we want the “typical” steely Chablis character

    • @winesearcher
      @winesearcher День тому

      Indeed, in some ways completely atypical, however what I was trying to say is that the steeliness is still there, just overlaid by richness.

    I first came across Bin 407 in about 1994 or 95. As a lowly undergrad, I spent some of my beer money on this at Somerfield's Supermarket (remember them?). I think it cost me about £12 a bottle (probably about 8 pints down the student's union back then). Anyway, it blew me away with its rich cassis, blackcurrant, leather and vanilla oak aromas and flavours. Sadly I have never had it since since the price (liks lots of Penfolds wines) has increased almost out of my reach 😢

      My memories of Penfolds wines in the 1990s involves selling them in Oddbins (remember them?). Bin 28 Shiraz at £4.99 a bottle and Grange 1982 going up from £21.99 to £24.99. prices have indeed risen a little since then!

    Tesco stock an excellent Chapoutier CdR Villages which is (according to Jancis Robinson) exclusive to Tesco's. They have had it on their shelves for over 5 years now and regularly goes on offer. Marks & Spencer used to stock a Chateau Tournon Syrah from Chapoutier's Australian arm which was fantastic. It went on reduced to clear, so I cleaned out their Trafford Centre store about 7 - 8 years ago.

    • @winesearcher
      @winesearcher 5 днів тому

      No I didn't think so - if the pH is good these SO2 levels should be OK to protect it - the lees will have protected it during elevage. There certainly wasn't the cider-like note that some less successful natural wines can exhibit.

  • @Pseudopimelodidae
    @Pseudopimelodidae 6 днів тому

    I had the 2018 vintage of this wine and it was amazing. Very rich and creamy quite untypical of village level Chablis. I dont know if the score 89 reflects the fact that this wine does not taste of typical Chablis. However, for me the wine tastes much better than many other Chablis wines in the same price point and I would personally score it much higher.

    • @winesearcher
      @winesearcher 6 днів тому

      I think that is also a fair point - the 89 is an aggregation of Critic's scores so could be being pulled down as a result of the wine being atypical for Chablis. I certainly felt this wine was of a higher quality than that aggregation indicated.

    Volume levels are off, very soft while listening at 100% without headphones. I really love this wine personally it is one of my favorite Derthonas. There is an oily/waxy or even petrolly character which I think you missed, it really adds a lot of interesting intangible complexity almost like certain Chenins or Aligotes I have tried. This wine is exceedingly ageworthy as are most Timorasso's, they age a bit like a Semillon or Riesling would. However the flavor change is quite large so if you like these wines fresh you may not like them aged or visa versa. I like this one young so much I havent had the chance to age it unfortunately but I can imagine it would develop a bit more towards petrol, nuts and honey. Timorasso is hard to find and Vietti is an excellent example.

      Good question. I would give at least an hour, but almost certainly the longer the better. Young Amarones like this would benefit from decanting and often taste better if you come back to them the next day. Their concentration and rich alcohol means they are not going to fall apart if you give them too much oxygen. So I guess I'm really saying 3-4 hrs ideally.

    Fine review as always. I know this wine very well but I confess that I had no knowledge of the interesting history. I've always had a good bottle regardless of vintage and it ages nicely too (I've had some up to eight years old). Majestic Wine used to sell it at bargain prices a few years ago but the high marks it receives by critics has seen the price increase. It's still good value for what's in the bottle though. There's a good intelligence behind this expression, as you reveal in your introduction, and I'm pleased it's been marketed at the level it is. It proves, yet again, (do I even need to say it) that Spanish wine continues to offer sensational price/quality offerings. It's an expression that is readily available but you would have to do a bit of hunting to find such an individual expression in France or Italy for the same price.

      If I'm honest I'm not the biggest fan of Mencia as a grape variety, but this is clearly a well-made, concentrated wine with character. I have huge respect for winemakers who are finding these parcels of old vines and working with them - people like Alvaro, like Fernando Mora and Norrel Robertson. There are still gems in France in places like Rousillon and the Minervious, witness Anne Gros and Jean Paul Tollot for instance or Clos de Fees and Boire de Maurel

    Unpleasant astringent and thin. I've just bouught a bottle. £22 in the UK. On offer. I can see why.

    Just bought 4 bottles of Les Cruzelles ‘23! Sounds fantastic. Am debating buying the Le Chenade bottling as well ($10 cad less than Cruzelles)

    Thanks, David. I have three '22s and one bottle of 2021 from Kumeu River. All of them are the Exhibition series from The Wine Society. I am not sure from which vineyard the fruit was sourced. I have yet to open one. Have you tasted either of these wines and, if so, should I be keeping them for a while longer? I tend to cellar my white Burgundies for a few years before opening, at least in good years.

      I have to say I'm interested by the Exhibition Series Chardonnay, It seems to be priced between the Estate Chardonnay and the Village wines. The back label I've seen claims it comes from a plot adjacent to Mate's Vineyard, so I'm not sure where that would be. So I'm not aware of having tasted it. Speaking to Michael & Paul Brajkovich on Monday though, they suggest their wines are best with 5-6 yrs bottle age, while we were mostly concentrating on the Estate and single-vineyard wines I'd think 5 years might be a good point, especially as they are two really good vintages.

      I have bought two bottles of the Wine Society's 150 Kumeu River. It is a 2019 special bottling: almost equal parts Maté's and Coddington. A bit pricey but probably better value than equivalent quality from Burgundy. The recommended drinking window goes out to 2034, although I might open the first one next year for my 70th. Cheers.

    I absolutely love German and French Riesling. One can find excellent value, even for some of the higher-end vineyards compared to something like Burgundy. Eagerly awaiting a review of Schloss Johannesburg as a salute to your poster (or is that Schloss Volrads)?

      I agree, though most wines compare favorably with Burgundy in terms of prices these days. You are correct that is Schloss Johannisburg in the poster, I hope Lufthansa appreciate us promoting them like this! I would love to look at a set of their wines, alas they don't seem to be distibuted in New Zealand at present so i may need to see if I can pick something up next time I am in the UK
