Hi Mary! On Thanksgiving I went to your website via Google after looking up how to make turkey bone broth. My husband was doing the entire dinner, because I broke my leg. I said we should make a broth, which Hubs had never done. Your recipe was easy and we enjoyed the turkey noodle soup he made with it very much! Thank you!
I do this every year because the turkeys are so cheap now. I get enough to pressure can them and the broth. That will last me a year. It’s so much better than anything you can buy. I like roast the bones after I’ve gotten the meat off, in the oven again until they are nice a brown. Along with some extra veggies I throw in. It gives a wonderful rich flavor to the broth.
I had a smoked Turkey carcass from my sons Thanksgiving large family meal. They didn’t want to fool with that Smoked Turkey so I took it home watched your video and this morning I had the most rich beautiful broth that surpasses any broth anywhere that I have tasted!!! Thanks for these wonderful videos
You encouraged me to begin making bone broth about two years ago. Such a wonderful blessing! After making many batches, (then freezing, canning or freeze drying the precious results) I have started combining both turkey and chicken scraps n bones, and the feet you gave me the courage to try... this delicious version is now labeled "Bird Broth" in our preparedness pantry! 😂😋 we are thankful for you, Mary!
Mary, I am so glad I found you and your kitchen! This season I have made turkey broth and ham broth and roast chicken broth. I then canned white beans with the small soup amount of cubed ham and used my broth. Yummy. I also used part of my turkey broth and made my tortilla turkey and black bean soup (minus the thickeners like tortillas). Thanks!
Wonderful information on a great process, Mary.. Nothing wasted in your kitchen! Hopefully more folks are thinking like this. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and have a very, Merry Christmas!
Yesss! I made mine last night/this morning ❤️ I save all of my little vegetable scraps in a gallon bag in the freezer. This year I spatchcocked my turkey so I had some extra bones to roast in with my garlic. I did my roasted bones, my freezer bag had all kinds of odds and ends like bell pepper, broccoli, even potato scraps along with celery carrots and onions, tossed in about 2 tbsp of whole cloves, 4-5tbsp black pepper corns, 5-6 bay leaves, a sprinkle of salt, quarter cup of plain white vinegar. I got about 4 gallons total of broth all jarred up and in the fridge for soups and stews.
Just wanted to let you know that I used your video to make my first Turkey Bone Broth. I came out with WONDERFUL quarts of liquid heaven. Thank you so much for the video guidance. Two days later, after pressure canning the Broth, I used a couple of extra jars to make PC'ed pints with the last of my Turkey. Keep up the great series of your videos.
I actually made a mixed bone broth yesterday (turkey breast, chicken, and beef) that I am going to use to make a stew tomorrow. I live alone, so it takes a while for me to save enough bones to make it, and if I didn't mix them, I might take over a year to save up enough of one kind. I would have added pork bones, too, except I gave them to my dog without thinking to save them.
Aha! I've been using flour sack cloths based on your recommendation. I really like them. However, the tip to wet them before straining broth is great. I haven't done that. I will do that next time!
Mary, while I watched this video, I went about making a batch of roasted turkey bone broth from the two turkeys I roasted this year for Christmas! I followed your video on roasting two small turkeys instead of one big turkey. This method worked out great and took much less cooking time! Thank you!!
Hi Mary. Just pressure canned 8 quarts of turkey bone broth! I used my turkey legs and cooked on high for 6 hours in my crockpot then about 14 hours on low. Came out perfect. You look WONDERFUL!I know you should throw vegetables in but I use some of the broth for my doggy’s food and they’re not allowed to have onions so I doctor up the bone broth if I’m using it in my own recipe
Thank you for another great video, Mary! I bought turkey wings on sale after the holiday and am making broth with those bones, plus a ham hock and a few roasted beef marrow bones. Can't wait!
I love the aroma, it just tells me deliciousness is coming. I have really come to rely on my bone broth and I thank you so much for enriching our knowledge because there are so many different ways out there. I have had excellent success with your recommendations. Thank you from another Texan!!
Great video, Mary! I have to share that whenever I make bone broth, my poor husband comments on how many dishes there are for him to wash (he's the "official" dishwasher in the family)!!!! -Lisa
I bought some store bought bone broth powder awhile back and I absolutely loved the flavor. I looked at the ingredients and it had chicory in it. I made my own broth last week and added chicory and it was amazing!!!!
Mary, I made turkey bone broth for the first time after watching your wonderful video. It was so delicious, better than any soup broth I ever made. I just love your channel. Thank you
❤ thank you so much for the video, all the advice and details. It’s my first time saving the bones and I wanted to make a broth with no idea how outside of boil it in water. 😄
Success!!! It was my first attempt at making bone broth of any kind and, thanks to you, it came out perfectly! And delicious! Thanks so much Mary for so generously sharing your skills and expertise in both YT and in your wonderful book! ❤️❤️❤️ Oops…I meant to put this comment on the Instant Pot one, that’s how I did it.
I always look forward to your videos! I saw this recent one pop-up and I quickly exited out of another video to watch yours 😉. This bone broth recipe seems far less daunting then simmering for days lol 😅. Do you have recipe videos where you use the bone broth? Thanks Mary! ❤️ from Maryland!
Hi Gina, I don't have a specific recipe using this bone broth but I do use bone broth - any bone broth - as a base for making soups and stews as well as in place of water when cooking rice or other grains. I'll definitely make more videos in the coming new year where I use bone broth. Love, Mary
Wow, this is WONDERFUL, Mary! The bone broth is so super gelatinous when you show it right at the end of the video ❤ Wow! You're an inspiration and I can't wait to start making so many of the wonderful recipes that you've shared here on UA-cam. Thank youuuu!!! 😊 💙💜💚
Thank you so much for this video. I am just a single guy but I like to cook and I love turkey and always wanted to know the proper way to make bone broth because I love making soups. Just also wanting to know if you would save the meat after making bone broth?
So happy to hear you enjoy cooking. As to any meat scraps left over from making the bone broth, you can save them and use them to bulk up soup, but the nutrition is somewhat diminished. Love and God Bless, Mary
Hi Miss Mary! I am ABSOLUTELY ADDICTED to your videos!😍😍😍 I ALWAYS seem to have alot of extra turkey left over at Thanksgiving and Christmas--- And now I know what to do with it all, thanks to your AMAZING VIDEOS! You, ma'am, are an ABSOLUTE TREASURE!!! Have a VERY BLESSED CHRISTMAS, And THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR CRAFT AND TALENT WITH US!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Also, I have a couple chicken carcasses in the freezer. My turkey is small, it was only about 8 1/2 pounds. Do you think it would be OK to mix the chicken bones in with the turkey bones?
Hello Mary! I have a question about the flour sack towel. Is there a particular size that you use? I found a good deal on Amazon and the measurement is 28 in by 28 in. Thanks!
Now I know all the tricks to improve bone broth! I see a number of mistakes I have made in the past! (Too much water, not acidifying the water, boiling it on high, and for too many hours. 🙃☹️etc)
I made a mistake by forgetting about the stovetop and letting the bones boil for waaaaay too long. The broth was delicious but I definitely broke the gelatin this time.
Question…is it OK to use smoked turkey drumsticks (bones) to make broth, like the ones they sell at fairs, etc., and you can buy at the grocery stores.
I travel for Thanksgiving and my first stop had 3 whole turkeys (many generations attend). I hadn’t thought about it until I found you, but I was so sad watching those carcasses being thrown out. I would’ve had to travel to another Thanksgiving celebration with the carcasses, hoping they had room in their freezer, and then travel back home. I will have a better plan to transport them next year!
@@MarysNest just ordered the 10 quart and fat separator from William Sonoma. Last tool question. What size is your glass measuring container? I am guessing 4 cup but seems bigger than that.
You can usually find these at most big box stores, like Costco and Sam’s Club in the aisle that sells commercial kitchen equipment. They probably are also sold at places like Walmart and maybe kitchen stores. And of course they’re always available online at places like Amazon. Love, Mary
Hi Mary, I make bone broth from every chicken and turkey I roast, but I still got a few tips from you. I love your fat separator and plan to get one. You say to save the fat. How do we use it? Do you have a video about using the fat leftover from broth making?
Hi Kelly, that’s a good question. I don’t know if it has a brand name. When they first came out, the only place you could find them was Williams-Sonoma, which is where I bought mine. Now you can find them at Sur La Table and also online at Amazon. I put a link to one that looks just like mine. The link is in the description underneath the video, and in the pinned comment. Love, Mary.
Hi Stephanie, I used that batch to make a turkey noodle soup. It was delicious. My husband and I finished it in two days. But when it comes to any bone broth, I like to use it as a base for soups and stews, in place of water when cooking rice or other grains, and as a simple sipping broth. It also works great in smoothies!! Love, Mary
Great question. You can still use the onion skins because they are part of the "Clean 15" which means even if they are not organic, they have few pesticides on them. Love, Mary
Are you sure I can reaheat that gelatinous broth when I want to drink it in the morning? That will definitely make it liquid again. Does that not make it lose its gelatinous properties?
Hi Tina, you can pressure canned bone broth to have it on hand for emergencies, but keep in mind that the high temperature associated with pressure canning, as well as the extended time associated with it, will damage the gelatin. Love, Mary
Hi Nan, Yes, I actually had washed some of the stalks before refrigerating them but that caused some of the green leaves to wilt. What you see are bits of the green celery leaves that wilted, darkened, and shriveled up and then got on parts of the stalks. Oh well! Love, Mary
Vodka would work…however….it is flavorless as the alcohol cooks off so it will not add the nice flavor that a wine or fortified wine will add. Also, if you use vodka or any strong spirit like that, reduce the amount to 1/4 cup. Love, Mary

Wow, this is WONDERFUL, Mary! The bone broth is so super gelatinous when you show it right at the end of the video ❤
Wow!
You're an inspiration and I can't wait to start making so many of the wonderful recipes that you've shared here on UA-cam.
Thank youuuu!!! 😊
💙💜💚
Always love love love your videos! You’ve e taught me so much and changed our house forever right down to the bag of veggie scraps in the freezer! 💙
Thank you Mary. I love any kind of broth. You are a sweetheart,, for sure😉😀💙
Awesome video!!
Hi Miss Mary!
I am ABSOLUTELY ADDICTED to your videos!😍😍😍

Thanks for sharing this.
Enjoy your Holidays.🤍☕☺️ Have a wonderful day!
Also, I have a couple chicken carcasses in the freezer. My turkey is small, it was only about 8 1/2 pounds. Do you think it would be OK to mix the chicken bones in with the turkey bones?
Hi Tiffany, Definitely!! Love, Mary
@@MarysNest Thank you! 🥰🥰
@@MarysNest Thank you!
I love your apron!
Do I need to cook the neck before adding to the pot for bone broth?
Hi Mary, Great question. You do not need to cook it beforehand. Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️
Thank you!
Question…is it OK to use smoked turkey drumsticks (bones) to make broth, like the ones they sell at fairs, etc., and you can buy at the grocery stores.
Beautiful ❤
I travel for Thanksgiving and my first stop had 3 whole turkeys (many generations attend). I hadn’t thought about it until I found you, but I was so sad watching those carcasses being thrown out. I would’ve had to travel to another Thanksgiving celebration with the carcasses, hoping they had room in their freezer, and then travel back home. I will have a better plan to transport them next year!
Nice
Hi sweet Mary!! What size stock pot did you use? If you mentioned it I may have missed it. Thank you!!
Hi Kelly, it’s a 10 quart enameled line stock pot. Love, Mary.
@@MarysNest just ordered the 10 quart and fat separator from William Sonoma. Last tool question. What size is your glass measuring container? I am guessing 4 cup but seems bigger than that.
Do you simmer broth on stove with lid on or off or part way?
Flour sack towel where do you find this at
You can usually find these at most big box stores, like Costco and Sam’s Club in the aisle that sells commercial kitchen equipment. They probably are also sold at places like Walmart and maybe kitchen stores. And of course they’re always available online at places like Amazon. Love, Mary
Can I make a very large batch of chicken bone broth in a 22 Quart Electric Roaster Oven? If I can, on what temp? and cook for how long?
Do you start with organic birds? I make broth every time I buy a Costco chicken but I wonder if this is ok?
Hi Mary, I make bone broth from every chicken and turkey I roast, but I still got a few tips from you. I love your fat separator and plan to get one. You say to save the fat. How do we use it? Do you have a video about using the fat leftover from broth making?
She has a video showing how she uses tallow for making a moisturizer.
Hi Mary, one more
Question. What is the brand name of the fat separator? Thank you!
Love, Mary.
Newby here 🖐🏼 Glad i subscribed 🌲
So is turkey barley soup your next video? (hint, hint) Whenever I make your recipes it's always a hit!
I snack on my carrots while I start the canning process.
I'd have trouble using all that up so quickly. Freezer storage works for me. @MarysNest, how do you like to use your turkey bone broth?
Hi Stephanie, I used that batch to make a turkey noodle soup. It was delicious. My husband and I finished it in two days. But when it comes to any bone broth, I like to use it as a base for soups and stews, in place of water when cooking rice or other grains, and as a simple sipping broth. It also works great in smoothies!! Love, Mary
@@MarysNest Thanks, Mary.
how do you use the onion skins from non-organic onions?
Great question. You can still use the onion skins because they are part of the "Clean 15" which means even if they are not organic, they have few pesticides on them. Love, Mary
@@MarysNest would you clean them with the baking soda in water?
Where do we buy filtered water. Thank you
Hi Cynthia, It's usually sold in bottles at the grocery store - such as "spring" water. Love, Mary
Are you sure I can reaheat that gelatinous broth when I want to drink it in the morning? That will definitely make it liquid again.
Does that not make it lose its gelatinous properties?
Keep the celery bottoms out and put into water to root and grow a new plant
What about canning it?
Hi Tina, you can pressure canned bone broth to have it on hand for emergencies, but keep in mind that the high temperature associated with pressure canning, as well as the extended time associated with it, will damage the gelatin. Love, Mary
I noticed that some of the celery was dirty. Don’t you wash it before adding it to the broth?
Hi Nan, Yes, I actually had washed some of the stalks before refrigerating them but that caused some of the green leaves to wilt. What you see are bits of the green celery leaves that wilted, darkened, and shriveled up and then got on parts of the stalks. Oh well! Love, Mary
@@MarysNest Thank you, Mary! This is the first of your videos I have watched, and I loved it. What a great lesson! I will be a loyal subscriber!
Would vodka count as an acceptable acid?
Vodka would work…however….it is flavorless as the alcohol cooks off so it will not add the nice flavor that a wine or fortified wine will add. Also, if you use vodka or any strong spirit like that, reduce the amount to 1/4 cup. Love, Mary

Oh and make way for the apple cider vinegar ! Whewww!!!!

Bone broths have extremely high levels of lead (Pb) and glyphosate (even organic chicken broth had 10x the lead then the water used to make it).
You talk too much
