If Coverdale had been smarter back then he never would have fired guitarist John Sykes, the true talent behind the sound and success of the 1987 album.
If Sykes was the true talent behind 1987, then why was everything else he done pretty average at best?
Besides Thunder and Lightning obviously.
@@davidstewart4310 It was Sykes guitar music and Aynsley Dunbar's drumming that gave the 1987 album it's great sound. Coverdale's lyrics and singing on it were great too, but after being fired from the band and forming the band Blue Murder Sykes would often sing songs from the 1987 Whitesnake album live while on tour and he sounded just like Coverdale. You can hear the same style guitar music in both the 1987 Whitesnake album and Blue Murder's self-titled debut. As for why everything he has done since seemed average at best, I'm not sure, it seems like he's trying to distance himself from the style and sound played on the 1987 Whitesnake and Blue Murder albums.
@@davidstewart4310 Sykes wrote some amazing music afterwards. Unfortunately, crack rock got involved and well..... recovery is a long road when money isnt the issue anymore.
It was The chemistry between the 4 members on that album. Made it greater than the sum of its parts.
@@CHAINBREAK3R1 possibly, the title of this video should be changed too, neither Campbell or Vandenberg played on the 1987 album, they were hired after Coverdale fired the band that actually recorded the album, Sykes, Dunbar and bassist Neil Murray. Campbell, Vandenberg, Tommy Aldridge and Rudy Sarzo came in to lipsynch for the music videos for MTV and to play on the tour. I saw this lineup open for Motley Crue on tour for the album and it was pretty obvious that they did not write or record the music on that album.
I think Vivian Campbell was still a bit touchy after getting screwed over by Dio and the Whitesnake situation was very much the same deal. These singer/bandleader/frontman guys are often very talented, but not very good at being honest and up-front about their business and intentions. Sykes said that Coverdale sacked him and ran to his car, locked himself inside and drove off. Dio didn’t keep promises about equal pay once the band was making money. I think Vivian Campbell is a band member type of player, give him fair pay and be honest about stuff and he’s gonna stay with you and play great but if you get on his bad side by dishonesty you will know. I mean the guy has been in Def Leppard for 30 years and is not being a diva.
Exactly. Truth hurts. The other band mates of Dio were screwed too. Vivian had opportunities to play in these bands because of his talent, not because of his time with Dio.
@Bob Allen I don't think so. At that time in the early '80s, guitarists like Viv were in huge demand. He would have landed a gig easily.
@@crisrose521 Dio was told about him. This was still in the time of NWOBHM influence. Viv was already a great guitarist. Everyone knows when a good guitar player is around. If you're in or around the music biz, that's how it is.
@@crisrose521 Viv played on three albums with Dio. Holy Diver, Last in Line and Sacred Heart. I saw all three of those tours. So how would Rudy know anything about his career until he joined Whitesnake. And that album was already written. None of the new members that Coverdale hired (including Rudy) played on that album. I saw those Whitesnake tours too…… with John Sykes, Adrian Vanderberg, Vivian Campbell and Steve Vai. Thought I would throw that in because it was a great time in music. Haha.
@Bob Allen Because you have a crystal ball.
Adrian Vandenberg is a straight up class act. Besides being an awesome guitarist he’s just a genuinely good person. That really shines through in this clip.
Vandenberg was a great band in itself, one of my favorites in the early 80’s.
Sucks for Campbell, but guy always lands on his feet. He's always in demand and can easily pick up another gig anytime.
He’s been with Def Leppard for three freakin’ decades now. He and his chick band aren’t in demand by anyone I know.
@@crusheverything4449 DL suck but that's a better paycheck than any of us are getting.
@@scottycunningham1413 - Ya think? Campbell obviously took the juicy paycheck over artistic integrity. Imagine being Phil Collen’s rhythm guitarist. It’s pathetic.
I remember I used to think (for some strange reason) that John Sykes, Adrian Vandenberg, and Vivian Campbell played for Whitesnake simultaneously, and found out I was wrong. What a freaking guitar shredding machine Whitesnake would have been! I would still luv to see those three guys play some songs together.
So Coverdale managed to chase off John Sykes, Vivian Campbell, and Steve Vai in less than three years, lol. Impressive
Vai was only under contract for that one touring cycle and if that album had been a hit, then he probably would have been offered another deal. Slip of the Tongue was basically a flop. A lot of copies ended up in the cut out bin in my hometown record store. The singles didn't have close to the radio impact that the singles for the previous album had.
@@angryagain3801 To my ears...the Band lost so much when John Sykes was gone. I Love Coverdale, but it needs to be said..there are those RARE players that ARE worth the hassles. VERY,VERY few..but I think John Sykes+David Coverdale= Pure adrenaline. John Kalodner (A&R and so much more) knew that. So much that waited thru sooo much to get that 87 Album..and once he had it: It was PURE Platinum to promote.
There were a few decent tracks on Slip of the Tongue, but it was very uneven, in my opinion, and just couldn't match up with the 1987 album that was great from start to finish.
Coverdale wasn't too bright . He never had a guitarist after Sykes and Campbell that were as good . Although Campbell didn't do much creatively as wasn't given the chance in W.S. He's had guys that can shred since but none have that musical chemistry he had with Sykes .
Vivian Campbell spoke very similar of David Coverdale and Ronnie James Dio. Wonky when it came to the business side of music. I believe him.
Not true. Vivian said he got paid in 5 weeks more in Whitesnake than what Dio was paying him over 5 years.
Well sure....after John Sykes bailed out Coverdale and the buzz was on. Unless you were writing the checks, we'll never truly know.🤣
I read years ago in a guitar magazine that Vivian Campbell said the tension was coming from Adrian, and that was why Coverdale released Campbell from Whitesnake. There apparently was more to the story than that, according to Adrian. Of course Coverdale is rather mercurial in who he has in the band.
strange, I never ever heard Vivian mention Vandenberg negatively...... He simply said that Coverdale would not accept anything from him with regard to writing, that it was a closed shop with Coverdale and Vandenberg. That's all I ever heard him say in interviews and he told me personally at an after show in Dublin...Coverdale did the same with Reb Beach.....He wrote everything with Doug Aldrich and Reb just recorded and toured.
This is an amazing interview clip! Thank you so much for sharing it, FIB! I think if I were going to help Vivian Back to the Future style, I would go back in the DeLorean and convince him to get a good entertainment lawyer and manager. Of course everything turned out OK for Vivian. He got to work with two of the best vocalists. But again what a great interview. And Adrian strikes me as very straight forward and honest.
Vivian said in interviews he and Adrian didn’t get along and the situation between them was bad. When Adrian’s hands got screwed up Vivian said now he’s out of the frying pan and into the fire. Coverdale didn’t want Campbells songwriting ideas as well, but from what I’ve heard it was probably insecurity on Adrian’s part.
I wouldn't either. Power chords get boring.
Wow... and he and Vivian came in after John Sykes had basically recorded ALL the guitars for their HUGE Whitesnake LP...
Sykes did the same thing when he came in after the Slide it in record was recorded
@@mikeraz594 so what a piece of shit coverdale is then.
@@the.communist you can def tell he's a slimeball from all the interviews he's done over the years
Most Whitesnake film clips feature different musicians to those that played on the actual songs
@@mikeraz594 Sykes re-recorded some parts of that album and the solos for the American version of Slide It In.
Adrian Vandenberg is a classy guy.
Yes, he is! More classy than Mr. Coverdale ,🤨
Yeah Adrian is cool. I follow him on IG, Twitter. Cool guy, funny too. Great guitarist
@@gerardspringer8576 Yes he is,💝🎸🔥🤟😎
I imagine Viv was a hired gun because Adrian couldn't pull off Sykes' parts. Watch some of the soloing from that tour. More of the load was put on Viv because Vandenberg's noodling was insufferable.
It's true that Adrian's noodling on that tour was unlistenable, I doubt that's why Cambell was hired. Otherwise Vandenberg wouldn't have gotten so much solo time.
My guess why Vivian said that Adrian didn't want him in the band is that's what David told him before he was hired. It's just a tactic the boss uses to plant the seeds of dissent and keep his employees from ganging up against him. Bosses of offices and restaurants do it too.
I call bs.
Yeah, just what you want. Two members of a band not liking each other. Makes for a great tour and a solid show for the fans. I don't think so.
@@kamaboko1 Unless you're Oasis or The Kinks.
@@kamaboko1 well, as Vivian wasn't around long, and states that Vivian didn't want him in the band...why would you think it's not possible? Surely you don't think egomaniac drunken rock stars always make the best business decisions.
I wouldnt think David would do that, but i must admit, thats a hell of a 'buisness' move by anyone in charge...wow,never heard of that tactic before.
WS peaked on the self titled. John Sykes was key for WS Chemistry. After John Sykes left WS it was over .
Too " Americanized" They were a European band. Big in the UK, France, etc. Coverdale wanted the look, etc. He jumped on the bandwagon of what was going on on the Sunset strip, LA bands. Had a friend in HS he used to go to France in the summer( had family) over there. Those WS albums were imports over here. They didn't really make headroom in the US till Slide it in. They were built for success for 2, 3 albums then they fell off. The older bluesy stuff. Deep purplish stuff was better. They got too commercial, hair band crap
@@gerardspringer8576 yes. I love the real Whitesnake of the early years. It's just much better.
@@gerardspringer8576 Well, that might be true but it saved his ass financially so it was the right move in that respect. he was deep in dept before the 87 album FIY. It could have been his last shot.
Sykes was a dick
@@jecos1966 You can't say that without explaining it. Why?
Ok this my opinion I felt Vivian and Adrian just didn’t have any chemistry David big mistake was letting go of his old band
Experience has taught me that if you are going to replace someone (in a band, a relationship, a job) you should ask yourself why, how they got axed etc... If it was an ugly or sketchy breakup then you could be next.
Vivian is great when it’s his project and he can play what he wants. In a group project like Whitesnake you’ve gotta have an all-around musician who can play what suits the music. Being a sideman is a completely different skill set than being the main guy.
Eddie VH played on a studio session before the first VH album, and he stuck out like a sore thumb. Played some amazing stuff, but it just didn’t fit. You can find the clip on YT, sorry I can’t remember the name of the artist
Vivian is completely on the level. Sucks he got screwed early on but he’s phenomenal in Def Lep and Last in Line. Such a genuine guy and just talented.
Needed two guitarist to replace one - enough said
Fleetwood Mac did that to Lindsey Buckingham....twice!
Yeah, John Sykes was too much and too immature.
I LOVE Slip of the Tongue! I think Vai brought some fresh air to the whole soundscape. Can’t understand why Whitesnake got such a bad rap over this record.
Vai is a very talented player, but lacks soul. Whitesnake has always been about the bluesy feeling of their songs, but Slip of the Tongue was too clinical.
@@pulaski1 exactly
One of the best technical players.
But always comes in second to great guitarists, and he just couldn't do still of the night justice.
@@pulaski1 Slip of the Tongue had great playing and songs - it was the mix that killed the album. Coverdale should have cranked the guitars in the mix and let Steve Vai and Vanderberg loose. They got buried in the mix and arrangements. I guess getting on a more radio-friendly mix was more important.
Mix was too slick, wrong singles picked, videos were less creative than previous record, that and by then music / images were changing, more GNR, less flashy.
@@jasonyltan7672 Interestingly the guitar players from the band Tesla said the same thing. They loved the _Slip of the Tongue_ album, but they wanted Vai's guitars to be louder in the mix.
I worked with Viv on a guitar clinic in Mobile Alabama for MMI MusicWorld just post his leaving Whitesnake and just pre his release of the first Riverdogs album... he was EXTREMELY moody back then... did NOT want to discuss DIO at all!... that night, every time a kid would ask a DIO related question... I'd just be like damn.. this is gonna be a long night. He had a NightSwan that he'd removed the middle pickup out of and added a neck pup and sanded most of the blue/black graphic off the face of the guitar... he also had a red 50s strat that was beat and had been routed for all kinds of crazy experiments... same one in the "Stars" vid... I asked him about Whitesnake while tuning up... he said David had asked everyone to submit ideas/demos for the next album and when he gave David his demos... David told him .. "This is Whitesnake... NOT U2."... and told him he was going to run with Adrian's ideas. That was as far as we touched on that. lol. He really only wanted to talk gear and influences or not talk at all.... First question of the night... kid in the back.. "WHY did you quit DIO?!?".... Viv.. "because he's a dick.".. quick, dry, no emotion... next question... "Play the Holy Diver solo!"... Viv.. "I don't remember it... I don't listen to that stuff anymore."... and that was pretty much how the night went.
I respect David, he admitted being arrogant, but he isn't the only one, looking back I'm sure he regrets some of his decisions, but look at all the great things that came out of it!!
Campbell is a great guitarist
He most certainly is.
Probably the best player to play in Whitesnake
@@mikeraz594oved Campbell in Dio, but John Sykes was the man (in Whitesnake)
Not a great rhythm guitarist.
I think they were all high on hairspray
Who cares, ancient history, Campbell moved on and has been in Def Leppard for decades now.
I guess Coverdale saw Viv as a hired gun. That's all.
Yeah, he was just the fast, fiery guy. The formula that worked was Coverdale with Sykes. So after that there always had to stand out lead player.
Mark Cassel, ALL of them were hired guns.
That's how ALL of Coverdales "bandmates" have been....David should be happy he has gotten what he has in life because he is an average songwriter at best who has relied on others.
I am glad I got to see Whitesnake on the 87 tour opening For Motley Crue. That was definitely one of my favorite concerts that just kicked ASS!!!!!
Blew the Crue right out of the water.
Sadly the Motley Crue and Steel Panther tour with Whitesnake was the final time I saw Dave sing. It became obvious that Dave's voice had lost the power and the high notes. The same with Crue. The only fun out the gig was watching Tommy Lee doing his drum solo on a round rollercoast Awesome 🤘🤘🤘
I saw that tour too. The Tacoma Dome.
SAW IT ON MY 25th bday in kansas city those were the days
Adrian hid in the back room fully aware of what was going to go down with viv lol.
Vivian has been getting screwed over for years, love the man, we all ain’t pretty boys, if you can play. You can play? Is it his look, is he an asshole behind the scenes? Doesn’t make sense? He & Jake E Lee have been totally screwed over, just ask Sharon?
Sykes auditioned for Whitesnake and had the gig even before that but he blew it big time when he started singing ..really great too ..the kiss 💋 of death
It’s always about money and notoriety, and sometimes just wanted to be included. It’s ironic that Adrian helped write it all, but didn’t record any of it 🤦🏻♂️
What about the relationship between David and John Sykes? Rumours are that David felt uncomfortable trying to be the focal point in the band with John's stage presence and looks to compete with. Seems unlikely considering he then went and hired Adrian Vandenberg!!
Wth! What’s the right dividend for band members by the way? It’s a group effort for goodness sake.
Worked out perfectly for Campbell.
Besides David, Tommy is the longest lasting member of the band. 74 and still hitting hard.
Steve is one of my HUGE Influences. Vivian did a great job with Dio but Lepp seems like the only time he’s been “Happy” in a band.
Woulda been cool to see JUST Adrian in WS at some point.
Whitesnake is a great band.
A classic band !
Lucky I got to see this line up. The Dutchman and the Irishman, as they were titled during introductions to the audience.
It doesnt necesarily mean coverdale is a great person
I used to think Coverdale letting Sykes go was a big mistake - and in a way it was but it was the right move for Sykes and for Coverdale. Sykes went on to be a superstar and made millions Coverdale same thing obviously.
Coverdale has had Reb Beach of Winger playing on and touring for the last few albums and Steve Vai for 1989's Slip Of The Tongue, it doesn't hurt to have great guitar players.

I read an interview with David Coverdale years ago where he stated that Vivian Campbell was incapable of writing Whitesnake style songs. He said everything that came out of Vivian at that was some U2 sounding bullshit. That's true. Listen to Vivian and his post Whitesnake band called Riverdogs
Riverdogs was hardly Vivian's band, from the credits, clearly the singer Rob Lamothe was the leader.@@angryagain3801
We all go through hard times and having a family while on the road for 1.5 years would test any marriage.
What I constantly hear is Vivian is a great guitarist, but he wants more creative input in a band. That shows a fire is brewing inside like any other passionate artist!
The problem is Vivian worked with Dio and Coverdale who are in their own right the best of their time. That's a lot of egotism to try and manage.
By the time Vivian joined Def Leppard he was a bit more humbled by his previous experiences and in my opinion a better guitarist than Phil Collen or Steve Clark for that matter.
He had to put that in a bucket and let it sit until Leppard started writing albums again, so he put together Last in Line where he could focus on writing and shredding.😎🤘
I heard different stories that Vivian quit Whitesnake.

Thank you, Johnny. But I gotta say, I always thought Eddie Trunk did a good interview.
@@fullinbloomplus C, idk why ppl hate Eddie Trunk, dude just does his job as good as he can, he might be very proud of his music industry connections, but definitely not pride. He just like to show this one or that one is his good friend sometimes, but that doesn’t bother me.
I always felt that Coverdale wanted so much to be an MTV diva and when he had an album that had hits he sacked most
If the band and got an band that would
Look good in videos. They were kind of like a male Pussycat dolls but they actually had talent but Coverdale only cared about that in as far as they played good live. Other then that he did it want them rocking the boat. Campbell may have thought it was more
Of a band and Coverdale quickly told him otherwise. Campbell joined Def Leppard in 1991 and has had 30 great years with them and is in the rock and roll hall of Fame while Whitesnake and Dio are not. Coverdale is at least in with part of Deep purple while the hall left out Dio for Black Sabbath.
The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is a joke , the fact that Dio Priest and Maiden are left out for cheesy ass pop stars tells you all you need to know ! They should not even get to use the name Rock N Roll it should just be Music Hall Of Fame. They suck
Rock and Roll hall o Fame doesn't meant that much to me,no disrespect nit there were a bunch of bands, artists Who really deserve more recognition as well as the big ones and never gone to make It as simple as that, probably Campbell fit more in Leppard 'cause they acted like a band more than the others where he stayed,I don't now, and obviusly the Money, his best time not only as a guitarrist plus as a componer was in DIO,despite the bad deal with Ronnie even the success he achived with the boys of Leppard.
Idk anything about what was going on with the band behind the scenes, but we all know at this time of bands in the latter 80's, several were self indulging to the point of it hurting things, plus the buisness was changing. Concerning all three guitarists? They are all or were at that time worth their weight in gold. Viv and mates totally got screwed paywise during the Dio era, which was a shame considering the greatness of RJD and the bands music then, that was rubber necking everyone. However, if you read between the lines, I think Dio's manager and wife was pulling a lot of the strings and was getting poor management advice from a friend in the same work.
RJD later admitted yhat his head was getting a bit too big for his hat and I could hear regret in his voice.
Adrian and John are awesome too, what a great time to be alive and go to huge outdoor festivals up unto 84 or 87 at the latest!
That latter 80's era and lack of focus of WS at that time, really seemed to plague a lot of bands that crashed and burned.
It may have sold millions of albums, but I didn't purchase one.
Didn't care for it, despite Dave's great voice.
I wish them all the best!
Odd, Campbell had problems with both Dio and Coverdale.
Hey, do you really want to go down that road? Keep in mind, big whitesnake fan, from Coverdales solo stuff onward. So, just to be clear, how many band mambers have their been in whitesnake? Maybe 30 plus not including Coverdale? And how many were there in Dio? 18 ish? I can't be sure of either of those figures but not a million miles off. So, remind me, why was it odd? Just a question.
@@ggproductions7078 , Dio, Coverdale and the Osbournes were notorious for underpaying and lying to their band members. Given time, I think Ozzy and Sharon would have even screwed Randy Rhodes, had he not died so tragically.

Not really odd at all..... Viv had issues with Dio because he was screwed over on royalties and his touring fees.... For three full albums..... I think the rub with Coverdale was likely that he was again promised a role in the writing and royalties, and got pushed to the side.... Considering he's been in Def Leppard for going on 30 years or so, I'd say the guy was just looking for a fair shake and finally found that with DL.
We all would’ve loved for Sykes to stay but cmon, anyone who knows about those days knows he was arrogant and pushy towards the recording process, super difficult to work with and had to have all this crazy gear which ended up sounding out of tune (pitch manipulated chorus effect), it’s a damn shame it ended too soon because the music was amazing! But people have to work together, and it’s David’s band everyone knows that 🤨🎯
not writing with Vivian and hiring Steve was a stupid decision that ultimately cost whitesnake.
It didn't cost them a damn thing, lol,
Whitesnake has had more members in the band than Spinal Tap. When you're a top tier player, being shut out would definitely piss you off. So, DC fired Viv because of Viv’s wife?
Vivian’s wife didn’t get along with Tawny Kitaen and Vivian was gonna have to take sides understandably. So he left before it got real ugly.
Vivian best whitesnake guitarist after sykes
Whitesnake has never had a _bad_ guitar player, though Vai lacked the right feel, but I wouldn't place one above the others. Mickey Moody and Bernie Marsden on the early albums were a superb pair of guitar players, as good as anyone who came afterwards.
In what regard? Campbell had a unique sound but Vandenberg is way more fluid and melodic
No vandenburg was much better
And now , I bet Vivian looks back and laughs , because the way it all turned out , he probably makes more money than Coverdale , annually. Obviously, Def Leppard has had far more staying power and reaches a wider audience than Whitesnake - and the money is made on the road now, for which , Def Leppard never has a lack of demand

Her & Coverdale. I am sure Dave was acting better once she was out of the picture. Tawny was having problems w/ that baseball plyr she was married to also. Got arrested for domestic abuse
The Vai album is horrible. No balls. To me Vai ruins everything he touches. He should’ve kept Vivian. Viv got the last laugh
Poor Viv, made his name, working with difficult, elitist douche bag singers . His style pushed through that crap.
Vivian is a girls name
No it's gender neutral and has been for centuries. Way more common in Europe as a guys name. In the US it's pretty rare for a guy to be named Vivian. It's from Latin and means "lively". Pretty popular male name back when the Normans were at their height and kicking peoples asses.
steve vai ruined whitesnake
Vai doesn't ruin anything he touches. Slip of the Tongue sold 3 mill albums and Vai played all the guitar parts. It was symbiotic. Helped Vai get a push to get Passion & Warfare and helped Coverdale sell more tickets.
Hair metal.
I remember vandenberg for the horrible guitar solo on here I go again.
lol i think its his best solo
It's a great solo. He's an exceptional guitarist.
@@fig1115 Have you ever heard the song Burning Heart???
@@partyonurpussy i have ,was well into guitarist back in the day .earned good money and would buy 3 or 4 albums per week so i had all or at least most of Vandenberg stuff .

Vivian is so boring …. That’s a fact .
