Was a HUGE DIO fan back in the 80's! Met Ronny back stage at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin I was 17 the time! Ronny was such a gent! Grateful for me showing up with 17 pizza's for the crew, he gave me $150.00 tip! I was 17! I made $2.77 plus tips back then per hour! How do you think he made me feel? TO THIS DAY! I remember this as if it was yesterday! He made such an impression on me! He was a class act! That year I met Bill Cosby, Rick Springfield, and a couple not so well known acts back stage. But Ronny? God rest his soul! He made me want to be that rock star guitarist I always dreamed of! I played for more than 20 years after this, raise more than 3/4 of a million dollars for fund raisers for cancer, and family tragedies, flooding, and storm damages! I never did it for the money, the recognition or the popularity! I did it for the feeling on stage, in front of a crowd, screaming and laughing and wanting more! If you've never been up there? You cant understand it! There is no drug, no dollar amount, no power greater than being on that stage! And all you can create is more love! God Bless you guys! Your the reason I did what I did! And all I can say is thank you!
There was nothing wrong with Sacred Heart. GREAT songs and better overall guitar sound. Vivian's lead playing changed a bit but was still awesome. Dio was never the same after that album.
My all time favorite metal/guitar/vocal/drums/bass/keyboard of all time. My favorite guitar solo is Rainbow in the Dark. He nailed it!! The entire album is the Best. Holy Diver. The Last in Line is second. His guitar work on those 2 albums are my favorites!!
Vivian Campbell will forever be my favorite guitarist of all time just from the work he did on DIO 1, 2, and 3 alone. I grew up in an era (70's and 80's) when every band had a great guitarist and Vivian was king.
Both albums, Holy Diver and The Last in Line were two of my favorite albums ever. Saw Dio live in the 80s. Dio and Vivian were at their best when they performed together, the greatest rock vocalist and greatest guitar God!!! Thank you for the greatest metal music gentlemen. R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio
How could anyone be compelled to click the dislike button??? Vivian is such a stand-up guy! Back in the day when I used to play in a band, we played Stand Up And Shout! I still remember how the crowd rushed toward the stage no less than 10 seconds into the song! It was such a pleasure to learn a lot and play with Dave Duncan, who played with Vivian when he lived in CA.
I could not agree more!!! Let Vivian fly once in a while in Leppard. That was what Pete Willis would do and I love the early stuff because of him and Steve. I saw Viv in Dio and He was fn great! Broke a string the band played on and Viv came out on just in time for the solo spot, it was pretty cool. Last in Line! Great show, Vivian rocks it!
This Man speaks truly from the heart in his love for the music and his love for the fans. I personally have always been a big fan of Vivian and his whole attitude and approach to playing the Guitar.
I hope he understands what he has done, he created a legacy...My first real guitar hero moment was seeing the video for Rainbow in the dark. Top Notch , that is the pinnacle for me, so many thanks Viv for setting me off on my own guitar trek :)
Robert Baker I saw that tour as well. I saw them in San Francisco and it was a New Year’s Eve show with Y&T and Dokken opening the show. Great memories.
What a wonderfully down to earth fellow as well as a great player! You can hear the Gary Moore influence ringing loud and clear and that's not a bad thing. In fact, youngsters ought to be made to listen to Gary's playing to understand why he was one of the all time greats, and Vivian keeps that torch burning bright!
If only Def Leppard would record an actual metal album again like High and Dry or Pyromania so Vivian could be used to his full potential. One of my favorite guitarists ever.
Vivian had nothing to do with those albums so why would he record one like that, and a matter of fact Phil Collen didn't either he just played solos. I don't want them to sound like Steve Clark is still alive I want them to go away from that and they have. If you want to listen to high and dry so much just put on the album
Both Campbell and Rhoads and a few select others could play a Les Paul like a Jackson or Ibanez, etc without a locking tremelo system and still get most of the effects ...so it's been quoted by many greats that you are only limited in your playing by your dexterity and imagination on the fingerboard !
Vivian, when you were on the Motley tour in Whitesnake you had a night off in Austin, TX and went into a Bar called the BACKROOM. I was playing in the band on stage that would later turn into Dangerous Toys(CBS/Sony). I gave you my Black San Dimas Charvel to play with the band. That guitar was completely set up like your guitars when in Dio(Invader pick up, Floyd Rose...). I remember you saying "I don't use those anymore". You played a couple songs and just burned up the last song with an extended lead. When you gave me the guitar back it was knocked out of tune like crazy. Good stuff. Nikki Sixx played with us too and later tried to buy our song "Teas'n Pleas'n that I wrote. That song was number one on MTV for weeks and sold Platinum, but I still should have sold that song to Motley Crue. We recorded at Sound City where you did Holy Diver. Great to hear your Positive Attitude. Thanks, Tim Trembly
Dude! I remember you guys from back in the day! all the rock mags were sure you were gonna be the next big thing! and you where one of the big bands of glam in those days!
Absolutely excellent video truly one of my idols words don’t speak Justin what you’re playing and being has is done for me and a huge part of my life growing up . Vivian Campbell you’re a legend brother
Vivian, at 6:32 is the best inspiration & advice I've heard in a loooong time; the main reason I've been hesitant to join a band; losing that passion cuz of making it a living. This is a great story & thank you for being candid. Epis are great (I have 3) and that's one, gorgeous axe! Satin black is a monster of a finish. Hope you can get to Dallas soon! Thank you for this vid, Epiphone! Thanks, again, Vivian! God bless! Rock on, brother!
Man this dudes riffs litterally made dio successful. those first few albums were legendary and u can really tell that dio screwed up big time for giving up this dudes talent just because he didn't wanna pay him more. The band had something special and ronnie let it die.
Let's get one thing straight. It was the early eighties...got paid 400 bux for less then an hours work times a minimum of 200 shows a year...so he made between 80 and 100k a year. Most people make an average of 45 k a year in 2019. He was a lucky young nobody that got graced with a position to play for Dio....end of fucking story.
@@yeahsure8323 No, I don't think so. Vivian Campbell is a consummate professional musician and Artist, thus he merits a professional income. In my eyes, he deserves to be a billionaire. That's not to say that he is greedy or money-driven. You have to make the clear distinction between a job and a profession. Most people work jobs and they're not professionals and that's why they need to motivate themselves to work a fuckin' job. Maximum wage is too little when you factor in the cost of living. Politicians should be homeless, crippled, maimed and dying from starvation because they're the vilest scum. Let's get one thing straight. The '80s decade is the most fabulously unforgettable decade because we had the art form and real Artists evocatively expressing the inner soul, unlike the entertainers of the porn industry and shitheads in financing business and realtor corporations who spread the cancer and make millions prostituting themselves for profit. They're shameless and soulless. We're the Last In Line.
Vivian is such a humble man. To mention one of the greatest song writers, melody, chord, riffs, hook and bends constructing genius's of all time in Steven Maynard 'The Riffmaster' Clark here is just a measure of how decent and respectful Vivian is. Steve also, strapped low was a true rock star who bleed through his guitars and oozed cool. Viv admits he still cannot play Gods of War [who can ever play Steamins parts], and he also admitted, much to Elliot's annoyance no doubt, that "90pc of what we play Steve left us". Sav also would've been not happy. Both have played down Steve's incalculable input since his tragic passing. They say just enough. But the fans know. Their Hysteria Tour, 2018/2019 again using Steve's [and Mutt's] songs mostly, showed a one minutes silence with a massive montage of 'The Riffmaster' with his red 18 string Razor from the 'In The Round/Face Tour', a beaming smile that hid so much pain. The crowd just erupted in a volcanic mass of noise and grieving, it was electric, fans have never forgotten what that genius did. Viv plays very different, especially since reverting to a LP minus tremolo. Collen for mine has taken over too many of Steve's guitar parts, and Vivian, who in my view Phil is not even close as a player to Vivian, has for years taken so many lead parts, Vivian, much to fans posted annoyance hate this, as fans know what Vivian can do, and he is under used t the point of absurdity. So now Epiphone have, as did Gibson, released tis guitar for Viv. Decades too late but better late than never. To see Viv in DIO is to see a young hungry jack in the box guitarist just hammering it. Anyone who watches those videos of Vivian tearing up the stage is so fortunate. I never saw him in DIO, was not old enough, for those that have I envy you. I never got to see Steve either. Tragically.
I saw Def Leppard twice on the original Hysteria tour (circa '87 I think?) Still rank in the top 5 shows I've EVER seen... and Vivian 2x with Whitesnake on the '87 tour and once with DL. Great stuff! Sadly, I never saw Dio live. At the time, I was completely bonered up that I could see Coverdale with an All Star band. It was only later that I realized how much I missed in the replacement of John Sykes. Still, I'm thankful to have spent my early adulthood in the 80s. Wouldn't change a thing!

Thanks so much for putting the GOOD epiphone headstock on this lp. You should do away with the ugly one you usually use for the lp and sg and put THIS ONE ON from now on!
"Holy Diver" by Dio, from the album 'Holy Diver' {1/10}, in 1983, track 2/9. Vocalist Ronnie James Dio {40/77*}, in C minor, metal, on greatest hits. Surrounding songs are "Stand Up And Shout" and "Gypsy". Album years: 1983-2004. First song: "Stand Up And Shout". Known for: "Holy Diver".
I appreciate artists wanting to please their fans. Giving their all even if they're not feeling it that night. After all we're making them rich buying tickets.
Vixen Vendetta absolutely one of my alltime favorite. saw him live with def leppard august 14th in las vegas zappos theater. flew half day from aruba to fortlauderdale to vegas to enjoy vacation and also 2 hours of leppard live show!!!!!!!
Such an underrated player. Those early DIO albums were just amazing the harmonics and phrasing for the time was totally new, and original. I also play Gibson and Epiphone, but own everything from Fender to Schecter. I honestly believe that my perfect guitar may not be yours, they are all different. I also think for around $850.00 this is not a bad deal. Epiphones are well built, I never could understand why they got a bad reputation. Vivian was making them scream in the early 80's, although Def-Leppard is no longer my thing (I just like the harder sound of the early albums). one can not dispute the impact of DIO and Leppard, and to know that A Epiphone and A marshall was that solid almost 40 years ago is just inspiring.
Wow ! That Epiphone has a different head stock design... Looks like regular les paul " open book " but exaggerated a bit. ...and the corners aren't clipped off ! A nice change...looks better !

Holy Diver is one of my favorite rock albums ever. Vivian's playing is absolutely awesome.

I saw them in 80s viv is an inspiration
Those first two Dio albums earned their place in some of the best in rock... Vivian is truly a talent that has truly never been given his just due
Sacred Heart is also very good, and it has Campbell on guitar.
I agree.
So true when he said being self taught gives you your own style.
One of the nicest, most humble and in my opinion Legendary guitarists of All Time!!!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Viv Campbell is one of the all time greatest and under rated guitarist. He is a beast and never gets the credit he deserves.
I agree and couldn't have said it better.
Didn't know he was such a nice guy. Absolute legend.
He is. He is so humble and genuine. I was lucky enough to meet him twice.
Vivian is one of the greats ! And a genuine nice guy , class act !
Vivian Campbell had no lessons......great spirit and underrated talent.....
Incredible guitarist, I’m
A massive Leppard fan but just wish they would let him loose on a solo.
he is just incredible, and I saw his rhythm in shadow kings with lou gramm on the mic,he really impressed me,damn fine musician
Same dude... They need to just let him go on a 40 second run for once...
Agreed he is such a wasted talent in that band!
No disrespect to Phil Collen
But I'd take Viv if I had to choose
One of the coolest humble guy in rock and one of the greatest guitarists on the planet.
What a lovely bloke. I like how he offers refreshing insights he's acquired in a pensive, eloquent way.
This Man speaks truly from the heart in his love for the music and his love for the fans. I personally have always been a big fan of Vivian and his whole attitude and approach to playing the Guitar.
Talk about a love letter to a great historical guitar. Dude is completely genuine. Well deserved!!!
I hope he understands what he has done, he created a legacy...My first real guitar hero moment was seeing the video for Rainbow in the dark. Top Notch , that is the pinnacle for me, so many thanks Viv for setting me off on my own guitar trek :)
Wonderful player, humble human being. Thank you for the music Vivian.
I was really lucky to see Dio at Victoria Hall, Hanley in 1983!!! Fantastic!!!!!!!

I always felt Leppard had the potential to be in the same class as Maiden, or Priest. That would have been something.
Rainbow in the dark tone revealed! Les Paul with dimarzios X2N. One of my all time favorite solos
Great guy, great guitarist! We grow up with DIO and Vivian..
Vivian is one of greatest! Sometimes underated. 🤘
most under rated and a massive influence in my life. i love his style and sound. thanks vivian!
Both Campbell and Rhoads and a few select others could play a Les Paul like a Jackson or Ibanez, etc without a locking tremelo system and still get most of the effects ...so it's been quoted by many greats that you are only limited in your playing by your dexterity and imagination on the fingerboard !
Locking tremolo system is garbage anyways. You take forever to tune the damn thing for a gimmick.
Love this guy so humble and a fantastic guitarist!
He is definitely great. Love all his live stuff. Never get enough. Thanks Viv.
I love that he was playing the riff from Queen’s Vengeance at the end... I first heard him and became a fan when he was in Sweet Savage.

Love Vivian Campbell Holy diver and last in line are masterpieces
loving the more 'classic' looking headstock on this! should do this headstock on every model!
Loved this, he seems so genuinely happy to be sharing his story.
Such a great guitar player, often overlooked.
I saw him play with his band, Holy Diver, in a small bar just a couple years ago. It was cool to see Vivian and Vinny Appice , both legends in the music industry, in such a small venue. 🤘🏻
Just bought this guitar. Cannot wait to jam on it.
Vivian def deserves his own sig model - seems like a cool guy and oh yeah, a killer player !!!
Great take. Love his contributions to Dio and Def Leppard. Amazing player.

I love rock history
I love my epiphone!
Cool interview!
I love you vivian 💜
Cool. Big sound.
Love this guy.🤘
