Song about Led Zeppelin. Or inspired by Zeppelin! ‘Downtown’ is set in the utopian ’60s, with a concert by Led Zeppelin taking centre stage in Young’s fantastical world. On the track, Young sings, “Jimi’s playin’ in the back room, Led Zeppelin on stage, There’s a mirror ball twirlin’, And a note from Page, Like a water-washed diamond”.
Hidden gem. First time i heard this song I was working in this tire factory setting a run of tires into molds, heat was like 120 degrees, tires would mold then you pry the top mold off take the tire out and clean it then reset mold worse sweat shop ever, I was early 20's or so this song was allways blasting on the stereo in the factory, definitely a shot of needed adrenaline every time. When I hear this song takes me back to the care free days of youth and the sweatshop, and ice cold beer after work. Ahhh to be young again...........
I remember this being on the radio when I was a kid, on the classic rock station, when it was new. It's nowhere to be heard in over 20 years. He sounds really good with Pearl Jam.
Qué recuerdo, cuando era adolescente allá por 1995 me encantaba este video y canción. Todavía sigue sonando en mis oídos. Extraño el rock que se hacía décadas atrás. Los 90's fueron mágicos. Saludos desde Argentina.
What a tribute to the rock´n roll history....absolutely amazing, gives me thrills, Beatles, Who, Rolling, Doors, Clapton, Zeppelin..... they are all in this amazing clip. Superb
What a tribute to the whole history of rock´n roll, it gives me thrills... Hendrix, Who, Beatles, Doors. Clapton, Nirvana, and of course Young, they are all in this amazing clip. What a song, Long live Rock´n roll
This song is based on a true story, when Neil got up on stage with Zeppelin and did When The Levee Breaks, at the RRHOF induction ceremony of one of them.

@Aladino4401 "Jimmy's playin in the back room" Neil is talking about Jimmy Page playin with the guitar back stage at the Rock n Roll have of fame 1995. "And a note from Page" Jimmy Page sent Neil Young a note and asked him to play with Zeppelin. Awesome song
@rozzie101 yes, they did. the whole album and tour, the backing band was Pearl Jam. Pearl Jams EP, Merkin Ball, was supposed to be one with the Neil Mirror Ball album, but the two records labels could not come to an agreement, so both were release separately on their existing labels. The songs on the Merkin Ball EP, were Long Road (Awesome) and I Got Shit (even More Awesome). Eddie Vedder has vocals on Mirror Ball, the song is Peace and Love.

The whole point of Crazy Horse was to create a stripped down sound that countered so much of the over produced music of the era. Grunge from Seattle picked up the torch and took it to even greater heights with how popular it became in the 90's.
I'm curious--when did Neil Young record this song? '70s, '80s, '90s? I know that sounds like a dumb question, but I could picture a lot of grunge bands from the 1990s doing this one.

This is one hell of a combination
One of my fav songs ever....reminds me of being a kid and listening to this in my Dad's car just driving on down the road.
Mirrorball (1995) is one of Neil Young's most satisfying albums released in the nineties.
Ragged Glory, brother

Its like about 30 other albums. Just fantastic
This is such a great album

Right up there with the best that this legendary artist has done. Great lyrics and sound.
You can thank Pearl Jam for the sound.

Man Neil just has to be the mostest "Fly" dry-ice-machine-operator...ever.
He wrote this song for Led Zeppelin
Awesome 😎🎸
Mentions Zeppelin. It sounds as if he wrote it for the Stones.
He wrote it for Zeppelin. It was inspired by his experience playing When the Levee Breaks with them at the R&R Hall of Fame.
@@jimmyrrpage Yes. I read that. Stylistically it is musically more similar to a Rolling Stones song of the 80s or 90s.
Sounded like Cat Scratch Fever at times. That's not a bad thing
Neil shines a light on everybody and nobody is spared
Good perspective on how musicians view the crowd.
Definitively the 90's were a whole huge tribute to the 60's.
We used to joke like that back in the 1980s. Not unti the Boomer generation passes on will we stop seeing references to the 1960s.
Oh man, I haven't heard this song since I was a DJ at my high school radio station in the '90s.
Freakin` amazing!!!
It's gonna be a eye opener when everyone sees what this has all been about for all these years. The Big Reckoning is eminent.

Funny video, great song
great song...buy the CD, support the music...at the end of this one Neil laughs and says "well we know that one...that's funky"
And in the beginning: "I think I f*€ked up - let me just play the groove for a minute."

Yeah it's right around the corner
Up and down the hill
When you hear the band playin'
It's gonna give you a chill
Give your money to the gateman
Young blood in his eye
Hold on to your baby
When you slip into the sky
Downtown
Let's go downtown
Downtown tonight
Downtown
Hear the band playin'
Downtown all right
Jimi's playin' in the back room
Led Zeppelin on stage
There's a mirror ball twirlin'

Like a water-washed diamond
In a river of sin
Goin' down like a whirlpool
When you get sucked in

Well said. Crazy Horse is awesome, and full of spirit. Neil Young has been playing music
with these guys for decades.
Some best music is less serious and more just having fun goofing
