This song feels like the spiritual successor to his '89 classic single I Won't Back Down -- and yet, with no disrespect to the latter as I love Full Moon Fever... Scare Easy easily surpasses I Won't Back Down in most every way. It's unbelievable that Petty is topping his own incredible heights, nearly 20 years later. "I am a loser at the top of my game" has to go down as one of the all-time great lyrics. Petty really had some incredible stuff going on in '08-'10, with the Mudcrutch and Mojo sessions at that LA-area practice warehouse they had. Scare Easy, Lover Of The Bayou, Something Good Coming, and Trip To Pirate's Cove... dude was pushing 60 years old at this time, and making some of the absolute best music of his life. Magic.
"Music is probably the only real magic I have encountered in my life. There's not some trick involved with it. It's pure and it's real. It moves, it heals, it communicates and does all these incredible things" - Tom Petty
Tom Petty did what was right .I have such mad respect and appreciation for him as a human first and one of the BEST musician's of ALL time 💘 He came back and picked these old friends/ band mates - Rockers up - gave them a shot at fame 💙🎶 Love you , TP and Heartbreakers -💘 props to Mudcrutch. 🎶 Miss you Tom Petty ❤️
I'm getting a flurry of promotions for things Bruce Springsteen is doing these days (spring 2019). I really was moved to laughter and tears during the Kennedy Centre Honours, mostly by Michelle Obama who had exquisite timing; but having read Springsteen's autobio and also Dylan's I'm struck by the lavishness and baroque timbre of their writing style. Tom never wrote anything but lyrics to music and never spoke unless he had something to say and it was usually funny or funny and furiously angry about some injustice. I don't think there was anyone ever like him. And this is probably a good place to stop and say tx for your great post.
“I’m a loser at the top of my game” “she was a part of my heart now she’s a line in my face” “most things I worry about never happen anyway” “drinking like a lumberjack and singing Delta Dawn” are just some of my favorite Petty lines. What an amazing songwriter.
Only recently discovered this "gem".....It's sensational ....That Rickenbacker that Tom plays sounds awesome and with Mike Campbell & Benmont Tench in the line up,can't go wrong. Man,how I miss Tom Petty..It hurts.
Tom Petty and the Mudcrutch lads. Got more talent in one used guitar pick, from one session, than most bands have in their entire careers! Not that I'm a biased fan, you understand :)

The quality of this track is beyond amazing! I can hear all the instruments playing at the same time! What a brilliant band, and of course, Tom Petty is and will forever be the most prolific songwriter and performer of all time. NO ONE can replace Tom Petty!
Just like love, life, god, and America, Tom Petty is and always will be forever in our hearts, souls, music, and memories. Thank you for all the hard times you got me, and many others through some tough times. God bless.

Only time I've seen a majority of people stay for credits after a movie is when this played at the end of "Appaloosa". (A vastly underrated movie)
Someone said it was that brilliant unreleased Wildflowers material .... I don't think so. He just beamed it down Scottie. Never will be anyone like him.
chip tmcc I am 59 and remember his first bands name was Mud Crunch formed in the early ‘70’s. After a few years the band was called the TP and the Heartbreaker. I also remember going to one of his concerts in 1976, the ticket price was $14.00 dollars for front row seating. One of the best concert’s, I ever had the chance to see. My High School years. Greatest time of my life. Time slows down for No One.
Tom Petty is my go to through all life situations. There's always a great song that seems to fit. So grateful to get to see him in concert. I would have loved to meet him. So sad I will miss his musicdearly, however, I will never stop loving all his work with various musicians and groups. Love forever!!!
My favorite Mudcrutch song. I found this after Tom passed. I’ll never forget hearing it for the first time. Driving at 5am in the dark on my way to work. It hit me hard that morning. While there is no replacing TP, there is too much talent here to be silent.
Mike Campbell's sound is timeless. His guitar solos always fit the song. It's been that way since day one with he and Tom. No pretentiousness, no noodling around; precise, classy and dripping with a sweet tone that comes from a lifetime of listening to and playing music. That he has a good ear for deadly guitar and amp combinations is the icing on the cake.
Tom's smile at the end of the song is how I will always remember him. This song to me has a kind of we got the band back together again vibe. They're having a great time and on what has become my fav Tom Petty song they just kill this version.

Won't Back Down was seriously in the mist of time and hard for TP to be seen as the stubborn single-minded man he was, and thank god he was. So unlike every other band leader, he regroups his people from his personal history and you get brilliant collaboration and of course he's going to come up with lyrics on this theme because that is who he is. Who cares which came first? Why am I replying to this crap????? Sometimes I really hate the internet.

A good example of that was the song Rebels, which almost cost him his hand. I wish you well, and am glad we will never meet.
+cyrano66 Ooh, so beautifully put. Especially since that's how I've always seen Tom, as 'a brave heart, but a wounded heart; the kind that never heals.'
Not quite sure, there are too many occasions to consider, but I don't think that I have ever heard Mike play so beautifully and Tom look so happy and relaxed.
Tom's Mudcrutch songs seem like closest thing to "classic Petty" he's recorded since after 1999. He, Mike, Benmont, and the other guys had this band when they were teens, so I'm sure it instantly brings them back to their youth jamming together.
fah q (My bad, didn't see this before.) The title track is good, and I love his message with that album, but musically it just didn't really jump out at me the way Refugee or You Got Lucky or something did.

Ditto "Orphan of the Storm" and "Wrong Thing to Do," (from Mudcrutch also) these are such hidden gems. At nearly 60 years of age the man has still got it. Tom, Mike , and Benmont,,, Talent runs so deep when these guys put it out there. These three guys together could do no wrong musically. I'm overtaken in emotion hearing this. It's so unbelievably sad the music world had to lose Tom Petty.

Most everyone is from Gainesville, Florida which is my home town.
Awesome song I just came across from Tom Petty and friends. First heard this song two nights ago at the end of the movie Appaloosa, a thrilling, well-made Western starring Ed Harris and Renee Zelwegger. I knew right away it was Petty singing, but could not place the song, which is very strange as I am a huge Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers fan and I know my music. I have seen Petty and his various bands many times, the first time in 1979. Well, it turns out that this song is from a relatively new project of his called Mudcrutch, which includes members of the Heartbreakers, as well as some of his other close musician friends. This is an awesome song...one of my favorites he has ever done, and that is saying a lot! Check it out. The movie is good too.

Thank you. Good stuff. Another rock history enthusiast! Ed Harris, who plays the lead male role in the movie, also wrote a song that they play during the ending credits after "Scare Easy." It's a good song called "You'll Never Leave My Heart." Check it out. By the way, I learned that Mudcrutch formed in 1970 in Petty's hometown of Gainesville, Fl., and was the house band at a local bar called Dub's Lounge, before they relocated to L.A. Anybody know whether Dubb's still exists?
I love all you guys whose lives have been irrevocably touched by Tom Petty and his brilliant band. 2021; anniversary of his death Oct 2. I found this poem, attribution disputed here it is: Do not stand by my grave and weep/I am not there I do not sleep. I am the thousand winds that blow/I am the diamond glints of snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain/I am the gentle autumn rain When you awake in the morning hush/I am the soft uplifting rush of great birds in circled flight/I am the soft stars in the night. Do not stand at my grave and cry: I am not there I did not die. Blessings upon Tom Petty who was a stalwart brilliant generous man who transcended his roots and remained someone to respect for always.
RIP TOM PETTY. I bought TP&HB first LP back in 1977 when they were hit less & turned all of my friends on to the record. It has been a great ride & I will always cherish the many live shows that was fortunate to attend over these many years.

Michael Wilson I believe Dubs or at the least the building, was still standing the last time I went through Gainsville, althought not in business.
"You pull on me, either one of you, I'll kill you both."
Hands down-- one of the best songs and music videos ever made....
he could have been around for another 2 decades sad
Tom……”I’m a loser at the top of my game”…….. what a great tune! Thanks Tom! Miss you so much, but you’ll always be with us!
I am the sunlight on ripened grain/I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awake in the morning hush/I am the soft uplifting rush of great birds in circled flight/I am the soft stars in the night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry: I am not there I did not die.
Blessings upon Tom Petty who was a stalwart brilliant generous man who transcended his roots and remained someone to respect for always.
He had the most beautiful smile ❤
Petty is at the top his game here for sure.
Tom's career trajectory was a very unique one in that he never really peaked.
@@brettcooper3893 SLOW AND STEADY FOREVER
This must be my favorite Mudcrutch song!
One big flaw: at a certain point the song ends whereas it should keep going on forever and ever!
Том жив в русских сердцах
You will rock on forever in my heart Tom. God Bless.
RIP Tom. Thanks for the music.
Tom Petty is a perfect escape from lockdown worry. It’s my go to place to get through . I find myself smiling every time I watch him.💕🎩👑
Tom passed away just moments ago. What a loss and so young. His great music is timeless and will be with us forever.

RIP TOM PETTY. I bought TP&HB first LP back in 1977 when they were hit less & turned all of my friends on to the record. It has been a great ride & I will always cherish the many live shows that was fortunate to attend over these many years.
From Tom Pettys soul straight to your soul. Thanks for these beautiful musical treasures you left for us. RIP Tom and 💔
No one rocked as cool as Petty. He was a blessing for the world of music.
What ever Tom put his time and effort into turned to gold . A song writer who can make you feel upbeat on any given occasion . Your music lives on mate

Still resonates.
That's the magic of music -
& Tom Petty.
My favorite Tom Petty song. And there are many. It follows the movie Appaloosa where I first heard it and instantly drawn to it.
FlexibleAtheist 696 that’s the first time I’d heard it too. I hadn’t thought I was much of a Tom Petty fan. Love this tune.
Gonna miss him so much.
FlexibleAtheist 696 Great song.... perfect for Vigo's character in Appaloosa
"Instantly drawn to it"........don't you love when that happens? :::))!!
The same for me: after starting Appaloosa end titles I'have been touched by the Tom' voice and the so distinctive band sound. What a pity! Ciao
Tom Petty was such a badass musician and vocalist. You can hear his soul pouring out through his voice and guitar🔥🔥🔥
When this song kicks in at the end of Appaloosa.....Magic
RIP TOM PETTY!
As I live and breathe. I don't care what they said, that man is still here and always will be.
I love the band “Mudcrutch” for me this is one of they’re best songs. It says so much! This song makes me miss Tom Pettys beautiful talent!🥰🎸🧚🏻♂️
I always liked seeing him play bass.
