  • From about a week ago. With no Work, looked around for more opportunities and got this to and from Penn Station. Originally coming from Long Beach and then turned for a Ronkonkoma train at Penn Station and didn't need to leave the train once in Penn.

It's mind boggling how such a system is built, operated and maintained with all the track work, signaling system, stations and tunnels. What an engineering marvel. It leaves me speechless. I loved this ride!

    • @enzhus

That's before, but not now. Now it will take 1.9 billion and 4 years to build 9.8 miles 3rd track between Floral Park to Hicksville. Of course, this assumes you believe they can finish the project on time and within budget.

I use to go out to Freeport by taking the E train to Jamaica then the N4 bus to the last stop. I no longer have the patients for all the noise and weird crap that goes with local transportation. I simply take the LIRR from Penn Station and its faster and more peaceful. Its worth the extra fare. Im too old for the madness!

Spotted our old apartment on Burns St at 5:04. That first morning the first diesel from the East End woke me up about 7. You could hear it coming for 5 miles...sounded like it was coming right through the bedroom. By the second morning I slept right through it.

To an extent. Overall it's good, but a few key differences. The road bridge supports near Woodside, approach on the East River Tunnel, the lighting in Penn Station, and the interlocking approaching it. The interlocking in TSW is wide open and pitch black. Still enjoyable nonetheless.

Having grown up in Kew Gardens, I found it interesting how the LIRR brass (ad to. Re lengthen the Kew Gardens and Forrest Hills platforms. The Kew Gardens platforms originally reached to the Onslow St. Bridge and a stair case came down both sides from the bridge to the platforms.
lIRR removed half of the platforms in the 1970’s. You can tell where they had to extend them again,
. Look to the lower right and see where they have temporary steel structures support the platform.

Last time I rode these trains was almost 20 years ago. Much has changed. Hard to believe you come into those stations and there isn't a single piece of trash on the rails. It sucks that so much has been modernized with the concrete ties and everything. Still pretty fun ride and at least not much has changed in the tunnels.

What has been modernized (or what was lost because of modernizing), and how do the concrete ties fit in? Looks I guess

    • @travelingtom923
      @travelingtom923 4 роки тому

@@rudolphguarnacci197 To me the concrete ties makes the railroad look very European. European railroads are very modern and extremely boring to look at. When I rode these trains 20 years ago many of the buildings and structures were very old. Much of the subway infrastructure was just as it was 60 years ago. It was dirty, gritty, old. In short it was like riding in a time machine. Although there is still many old structures it doesn't feel the same. It's so much more sanitized, upscale, and proper.

I understand. I like old things. The only change I can accept is if it's beneficial. As much as I loved the original St Vincent's Hospital, I was okay with them tearing it down in 1985 for a bigger, modernized facility. But then how do you justify turning it into condos 10 yrs ago? Bloomberg made a promise to his billionaire friends. They couldn't save a hospital in the heart of lower Manhattan because it was $700 million in debt? What horseshit. I don't feel sorry for these brainwashed kids today, either. They deserve what's coming down the pike for them. I just hope when they soylent green us that it's quick and relatively painless.

Really cool perspective. Is this the same line that you would take from JFK to Manhattan? I thought there was only one stop on that route, but it looks like this train stopped (at least) twice.

You were stationed right next to track 18, that’s normally the train that takes you to Ronkonkoma, am I right?

At 12:20 we have catenary and third rail. Does this train switch from 750VDC from the third rail to the catenary lines, or does it simply share the track with trains that can't use the third rail?

It's called a "pressure transient" the train is like a piston, and all the air it is displacing as it enters the tunnel is being forced ahead and around it to the rear rapidly raising the pressure all around the train, and that's why you feel that pressure on your ears. This effect can be mitigated by gradually reducing the tunnel portal area, unlike what you see in the video where the portal is a flat opening in the wall.

You must be a scientist or something, you had a good description about the pressure transient and you gave good evidence.
      ¡Nice Vocabulary!

Anyone know why the double slip switch has a dislocated frog? Just trying to figure out why the frogs in the slip switch are built that way instead of just being a normal cross over frog

Very cool perspective. I’m really just curious - did you have to get prior permission from MTA/engineers to film?

If they have the door open blocking the window (Under 204's permission), then yes. If it's shut, then usually no, you don't need to ask. Some say yes, others may say no. It comes down to who you know.

This system is so old nothing like the BART system in the San Francisco area. You think with all the money New York has they would build a new system.
