    One of the best if not the best plateform in dcs, the best pleasure/immersion ratio for me:). With the last maverick update ( they can lock into ground object), the spectre of mission for the Viggen was immensely extended with stand off weapons. IMHO the Viggen is underrated because it is very very stable at very low alti, very efficient is all missions it can do :). I am happy Iain that you have interest in. Greetings from France^^

    Total agree about the excess effectiveness of AAA, one of the areas most in need for ED to look at for WW2 and cold War players. Glad its not just me.

      Yeah. It's an issue for sure. Not sure how much of a priority it is for them to fix. You are not alone.

    Yes, probably the most difficult part about High-Drag bombing is the the super short aquisition time. Also the popping up just on time because you will have to fly way lower on ingress to have a chance to even get that close

      In a cold war scenario that would be true. Having to visually find the target it is difficult. I don't know in the Viggen, but all modern jets you can set a way point over the target, set it as target, set auto, and let the computer do the rest.

    Interesting to learn the difference between glide and dive bombing! The M-2000C can carry both Mk82s and snakeyes, but restricts the method of delivery to CCRP for the former and CCIP for the latter. Effectively that means dropping Mk82s flying straight and level, whilst dropping snakeyes in a shallow dive - which seems about the opposite to what is in this video!

      I haven't tried the Mirage very much but most CCRP systems can be used in a dive (see my earlier Viggen videos) in fact the A4 bombing computer is a form of CCRP. The point of CCRP I'd to accurately designate the target so the pilots reaction time isn't the limiting factor. It shouldn't prevent you from being in a dive when the bombs release.

      @@Sidekick65 that's a good point - hadn't considered that! Will have to give 'proper' CCRP a go then, given I've had a fair bit of use with the A-4E's bombing computer. I'll also try a low altitude CCIP pass with the snakeyes and see if the pipper is visible on the HUD - even in a dive it takes a good long while to climb up into the aperture

      @@procrastinathan9201 Excellent. Be interested to hear how you make out. The CCIP pipper will, of course, be farther up the screen the lower and faster you fly...

      @@Sidekick65 turned out pretty well! Speed and altitude are indeed the key - lots of the former, less of the latter. When you’re used to managing speed carefully in a dive-bomb attack to ensure you have sufficient time to line up on target, it feels quite strange putting the burner on to drop bombs. The Mirage’s BAP-100 runway bombs are incredibly fun to use, as those of us on Yappy’s server found out on Sunday!

    All too true about the difficulty of identifying and lining up on your target while screaming over the ground at 50 feet and 500 knots. To make matters worse, those trees that obscure the target from your eyes are invisible to the AI gunners who are lining up on you while you desperately try to get a glimpse of the target area. You mentioned that you need pretty good intelligence gathering in order to know where appropriate targets for high drag bombs are and that got me to wondering exactly what sort of intelligence gathering did the Swedes possess in the Viggen timeframe? Did they have satellites to find targets and their coordinates or were they restricted to ground observations, radar returns and the occasional reconnaissance flight?

    • @Sidekick65
      @Sidekick65  Рік тому +2

      The Swedes did have some impressive Recon capabilities, I think. However, I kind if assume that the targets fir high drag bombs would have been things like airbase aprons - known to have parked aircraft on them. Or port facilities known to be full of supplies and vehicles. That sort if thing. Large, fairly easy to identify locations with enough targets to make it hard to miss. Maybe st night too, with lys-bombs launched by accompanying aircraft. That would make for quite a midnight surprise for ships loading or unloading in port...

      The M/71 was primarily for concentrations of soft targets, with pre-plan through aerial reconnaisance, or reconnaisance by spec-ops. For hard field targets, the ARAK would be used, and for runways and heavier stuff, the A 32 Lansen would bring heavier bombs.
      Doctrinally though, Viggen rarely used the level bombing technique, but rather favoured pop up attacks with glide bombing geometry ^^

    I hope you will do a comparison between F-4e, Viggen and Mirage F1 EE. I would like to know how much the difference in abilities is and in what areas. Not from a module perspective, but from an aircraft and doctrine point of view.

    Hey Ian, love the video but have a question, Ive been having some issues with hihg drag bombing, I have my waypoints set and have been trying to get a stable altitude, yet when im making my run my symbology for the 40 second timer in NAV mode, doesnt seem to show up? and half the time the symbology after the saftey switch seems wrong or never even shows up. any tips? could I be making my run wrong?

    D’oh! I always half assumed ballute was taken from French or Ruzzian or something similar.
    Boy, is my face red! Or it would be if I’d admitted that to any…. d’oh!
