I've been a fan of Lloyd;s for a while now. He was brilliant, and I'm glad to know all these little details. John -- I don't think you were aware of how you were torturing the poor man. (Lloyd is very polite, so he managed his frustration much better than I would.) The bombarding way of asking questions, the constant interruption, the ignoring of his indicators to you that he was getting exasperated. And it sounds like he wasn't told in advance that you would be bombarding him this way, asking for this level of detail. It made it painful to watch, but it was worth it because I was interested in Lloyd's answer.
And why do the research DURING the interview? It made it feel that Lloyd was expected to compete with Wikipedia. That was a bit odd. Please think about how that feels for the guest.
As an exmormon, I know very little about JWs. I had a friend or 2 that was..I think the exmormon curiosity, was based on the idea of "what's it like being a jw?" And how demanding is it?
I felt this way watching as well. I was trying to put a finger on what it reminded me of and realized that it was like watching someone doing a pop quiz. Like it was frantically moving from question to question. I think John’s desire to get reductive to learn about other faiths and or explain Mormonism to non-Mormons makes his interviews have this unsettling energy.
I love how the former Mormon argues against the "logic" of the JW doctrine, as if any Christian explanation of the broader faith makes sense. The details are all crazy.
They are intelligent and most children have exceptional grades but they are discouraged from higher learning because of the fact they could be taught to use their critical thinking skills and of course it would take time away from bringing more members into to organization.
I just watched the part of the podcast where Lloyd explained the territories. It is funny because I lived very close to a JW building for several years and I viewed them as lazy because they came by my house so often. I was like "Reach out man! It's a big world!".
After Millennium, the JWs teach that Jesus and his 144,000 after ruling for that 1000 years over earth they hand over the ruling back to Jehovah. After that, they just attend to Jehovah , who needs nothing, so I guess just fawning over him 24/7?
I am dying laughing @1:30:30..."JW's are not allowed to go to colleges and universities"...John's reaction is priceless!! L😂L!!... Yes, it's true!!..I'm a living example of my JW Elder father and Pioneer mother not having that!!...The slogan..."Armageddon is around the corner" and we must be busy in the ministry work so we can survive armageddon!! Thanks for this talk. I am listening to JW meetings right now at this time of my life. I enjoy the studies very much. After two months, I have decided to remain apart from this organization. I prefer a real church. Thank you.
So sorry. It triggered him. There are certain things about Mormonism that triggers me..but I must confess, i was just as curious as John! As i know virtually nothing about JW.
JW seem way more intense than Mormonism. I was a very believing Mormon , but my life as a teen was normal. I did sports , had birthday, Xmas , non Mormon friends etc JW seem more isolated. It doesn’t sound like fun.
Publishers as I remember. We paid for the magazines and we offered them free. That may have changed since I was in . Due to the fact the literature has thinned down leads me to question what they pay for them now.
I recall filling out a time slip every week Watchtower and Awake was a contribution of 5 or 10 cents Books costs money. So us poor folks make sure folks pay for books because we do not get a refund for books purchased What is given out free are past issues of magazines
I watched half of this so I'm not sure if you'll get it..... but, I think that the JWs teach that the Angel Michael went into a non-existent state, and then became Jesus. However, after the crucifixion, Jesus became non-existent and became Michael again. Is this what they teach?
Just one comment Lloyd, and to be honest I'm not sure if this changed after I left, but wasn't the teaching that those who die before Armageddon have the opportunity to be resurrected in the Paradise, because the "sin offers death, for wages.". Isn't the JW posture that people will be resurrected, even if they were bad people and will have the chance to obtain "everlasting life" in the paradise during the 1000 years of teaching time of the new world? I'm not sure If I ever understood this but it would be good to talk to someone else about it :)
After Armageddon, the resurrection will take place in stages. And during the thousand year reign, the ones who are resurrected will be taught about Jehovah. And therefore they will have a chance to make it into paradise if they pass the final test at the end of the thousand years. During the thousand year reign, the two main things that will be going on are cleaning up or getting rid of somehow all the dead bodies from Armageddon and teaching all of the resurrected ones about Jehovah. Then Satan will be let loose one final time at the end of the thousand years. I know there is a chart in one of their books. I will try to find it and give you the link. I was a witness for about 25 years.
The Witnesses have a comparable anti-education stance not that far removed from many more mainstream fundamentalist and evangelicals. Some of those have developed strange alternate education cultures.
John during resurrection, those who came before Jesus appeared on earth are eligible to be resurrected. That is why 1,000 years are needed. Those folks have to be taught.
And John, as there is no guarantee of jws, being saved because when Armageddon comes only Jehovah/Jesus know who will be spared because they know the mind and heart. So some witnesses will be surprised to realize they will not be spared.
See, I had the opposite experience when I was a missionary in Argentina. I wanted to talk to the JWs, because I wanted to hear what their beliefs were straight from the horse's mouth. But any time I got close to them, they'd run away. Granted, it may have had something to do with the fact that I was a good foot or so taller than everyone in the country and a scary American. Nevertheless, I was never afraid of the JWs.
These religious men say all these rules are in God's word the bible so we have no say over how deficient or problematic following them are but then they were written by MAN not GOD!
This is a doctrine of man..This is the only 2 churches we talk about theirs doctrine...how about the others 1000 churches doctrine..wow crazy what a man make up doctrine for themself...I wander why Jesus said I never knew you....read this Luke 6.29 Jesus answered them, this is the works of God, to believe in him whom who has sent.
Correction God has a spirit body and jesus had a spirit body. They just don't think humans do till they are given one. Its stupid. I think it makes more sence to say we all are spirits who have a physical body that separates from our spirit when we die.
53:00 no you are forgetting his being dead 3 days. thus he died in body and did not exist other than in God's memory restoring it all in spiritual body on 3rd day. The scripture that This preaches to the bad angels for 3 days does not mean Jesus is alive chewing them out. It means he was willing to die, where as angels were not. o Jesus did what the angels would not do before the Flood; namely risk their own death. FLOOD pushed them off Earth. It may be they thrived on being human so strongly that every angel on Earth took in water gasping before natural evacuation came to flee the body as dead. For 40 days none of the MANY bodies Jesus took on were HIS body that he lived as for 34 years.
Cedars has it ALL WRONG about Prince Nelson. Prince was not raised a JW, his mother became one and her conversion did not involve Prince. Prince promised his mother to be a JW on her death bed, because had been preached to by his band member (from Sly Family Stone). So his baptism is after his mom's death and he talked JW in talk shows, and had a concert of Our Lord died on a stake not cross. Very Very shallow limited brain Prince had about JWs. In fact his 80s song Lets Go Crazy says Dont Let The elevator get you down, and he died going DOWN in his elevator. Which proves he had gone crazy to be putting other drugs in his mislabeled prescription bottle.
it is the same as the days of Peleg who lived 240 years. You are raised to build all the towers (Pyramids, watchtowers) while told you will live900 like Noah, and YOU can personally meet Noah to see this truth if you go seek him out like Gilgamesh. However, this is a lie that YOU too will live 900, and that only being bad to God will change that. With the water canopy gone, everybody good or bad would now live 240 and it would cut down to 137 and 120 and even 80 or 70 or 60. Thus the confusion is in all topics be it language of math or science or longevity or biology. I went to Mormon church merely to learn THEIR perspective so i would not be wrong in my accusations of them. Mormon elders stare at you just like JW elders, and Mormon girls hit on you just like JW girls who pretend they don't. You're new meat to marry, and the elders are out to protect them. That protection is why sex victims are single girls screwed by elders who will not get excommunicated (the girl will) and this was a protections so YOU do not screw her and marry her. They defy God's Law by Moses which says marry the girl you screw, and instead they apply the fornication stoning to all of the cases. Thus worshipping Christendom way instead of Jah's way. I also prayed very hard that i be strong in mind and will that no spirit of Satan enter me when in my house a young elder wanted to lay his hands on me and pray the spirit into me. I was happy to show him that i had no fear, had respect for him, and God, and i think he was baffled that the crazed spirit had failed him and that i didn't scream and shout i got it i got it, i got the spirit. I admire them for group helping "new ones" but WT does that too while ignoring those already members. I did notice that Mormon church is all hymn music the way Halls were until the new internet stream videos took over. And i noted all the political songs in the back of their 300-400 song book
i disagree on the male ritual of JWs as Mormons as well. It is ONLY baptism, no other ceremonies, but picnics are FEW what they used to be because WT said we were having picnics when we could be preaching, and worse they impression given whenever large gatherings are criticized by bad children behavior. Bad enough if its at a circuit or district assembly but if its for a picnic or gathering then it is worse because it cannot be tagged as merely disliking our God. IN cases of entertainment then it is strictly the people and not bigots seeking to kill martyrs. So group gatherings have been few, especially since you have those who bring and those who do not. So you have YOUTH who gather on their own, but then this too is discourage in the belief of lacking morals in being socially bad instead of faith to push GOOD socializing. So finally the ANSWER, the biggest socializing rituals are the wedding showers, baby showers, all women not a MALE thing as Cedars says. The women at one time had clothing parties, and vitamin parties and jewelry parties making business with ALL the women to socialize. And yes these became rituals, but no not the literal rituals Mormons have like Masons and Elks and Buffalo.
