NOTE: This video was originally made to celebrate USA's participation in the 2014 World Cup.

The first of Group G (Germany is, really, but I have decided to postpone the recording of it by a day).
I obviously have a strong familiarity with this anthem since I live in Canada. The desired tempo was easier to determine and more natural to me than other anthems because of my familiarity.
The sheet music I am using is an arrangement by Josef Hofmann, the famous twentieth century concert pianist that inspired the likes of Vladimir Horowitz and generations of pianists since. Unsurprisingly, Hofmann brilliantly sculpted an arrangement that takes advantage of the pianos ability to sustain and its capacity for loud, bombastic chords.
This is an arrangement that deserves to be memorized, as it simply feels wrong to play with the sheet music an arrangement written by a concert pianist of such caliber. It is also an arrangement that deserves a lot more practice than I was able to give it. There is always more one could do with a piece of music. Even a perfect performance can warrant change, as something DIFFERENT is always possible. This does not have to make the performance "better", but it can reveal some new traits or musical lines that were previously hidden. In short, I don't claim this to be a perfect performance.

I left the score untouched and performed it in the written key, C major.
The lyrics for The Star-Spangled Banner come from an 1814 poem called "Defence of Fort M'Henry", which was written by the amateur poet, Francis Scott Key. The music that was to be used for The Star-Spangled Banner had already been in existence since 1780. It was composed by the British composer, John Stafford Smith. The music was originally called "The Anacreontic Song" for the Anacreontic Society in London, a popular gentlemen's club that featured amateur musicians. The song became known as The Star-Spangled Banner following its setting to Francis Key's poem.
The Star-Spangled Banner was made the official anthem of the United States in March of 1931, with President Herbert Hoover's approval.
