i need some help, for as long as i can remember ive been shooting the ball with amazing acuraccy but my elbow flares out (i have a chicken wing). My coach and dad have been trying to make me shoot with it in and since last year ive been trying but when i shoot with it in, i seem to always miss in all 4 directions and my elbow has alot of tension on it. what should i do?

Yeah, I agree. Its a bad form for a lot of players, but it is one of the cleanest forms I have ever seen. So much so that my form is very similar to his, without getting the finger of the ball of course.

In my experience the palm gap is necessary for my shot. Seems the ball rolls off my fingers in a inconsistent manner without the gap.

    Excellent vidéo.
I was a very very good shooter in the eighties. Passionate with technique.
I practiced 2 hours a day to become a clinical long distance jump shooter.
To me Damian Lillard is close to the perfect shooter. His routine and technique is beautiful.
The 3 points you are mentioning are no weakness at all, as you say it.
    - natural jump shot start with waist level ball control. Then you have the perfect rhythm and synchro of fluid smooth movement . The ball elevate to your head while you strengthen the legs.
    - body orientation is also perfect, a slight body, feet and shoulders open positon helps for alignment.
    - palm: Dames does NOT shoot with the palm. He simply poses the ball in the palm, at first. But the Ball release is one the purest and finest ever seen. He lets the ball roll freely without any tension from the palm to the fingers. The help the ball to rotate counter clockwise , it gives him an ultimate ball feeling. He really shoots with a total free and relaxed release from the finger tips.
I respect other great shooters, like Curry of course. But technically , to me , Dames is the purest one.
And … most of those high school coaches can not play proper basketball. They learnt it in books. They are great teachers, excellent kids leaders … but have very little knowledge of how the game should be played.

With point 1, loading low, i find what works for me is combining loading at chest level and then dip it low. My hand position is on the sides of the ball and my wrist turns as it goes up, as mention in your older videos. I find hand on top of the ball will give me a chicken wing. With loading at the chest and then dipping to low, i find the trajectory of the ball going straight is better.
The palm gap thing, Dame's dad told him to do it go get rotation but Dame gets the rotation on the release as he flicks the ball. As mentioned in JJ Redick's podcast

its your wrist. Have a neutral wrist. Instead of having your thumb pointing to the side, have it pointing almost back at you.

Warmup by shooting against the side of the backboard. Will help align your shot. Also warm up with freethrows as well.

    • @obinna202
      @obinna202 4 місяці тому

Also make sure your lead foot is slightly in front and aligned with your shooting hand when shooting.

Hey Coach Castellaw, I’m a basketball player, and I just turned 13. When I shoot the ball, I have a chicken wing with my elbow. I’m right handed. I’ve seen your video about chicken wings, and my problem is my shot line. I’ve tried to fix my shot line, but I am really struggling. Do you have any tips? Also, if you have made a video on this, could you please reply with the link? Thank you.

To the 10th degree lol… BUT it’s true, most coaches teach the opposite of what Dame and other great shooters actually do. So I figured I would blast ‘em a little 😅

Bullshit. The guy makes sidestep threes from logo in the clutch time and you tell that his mechanics wrong. LOL. His shot is the same as MJ, Luka, Kobe etc. Just simple proper shooting technique. Not a single video on this channel was useful for me.
