I'm so happy to see this number at last, after all the times I have asked for it. This is the first big opening producion number in Academy Awards history. Joel Grey had just finished the shooting of Cabaret. Thanks a lot for sharing this with us.
Actually, Cabaret had been released two months before - remember, the Oscars used to occur in April - rocketing Grey from semi-known Broadway quantity to superstar nearly overnight - same for James Caan who, though he'd been around since the late 60s had, less than a month before - become a bonafide celeb with the March release of 'The Godfather'. It's fascinating to note the the two main contenders for Oscars the following year (the two aforementioned films) were released extremely early in 1972 - such was critical and cultural memory...now it seems anyone who wants a crack at a statue waits until October at the earliest...
I was just one month old when these here 44th Academy Awards played out. Legendary stars, most now no longer with us. An era that showcased in industry giving respect to the old guard like Helen Hayes and Peter Finch, and promising electrifying future screen careers from James Caan and Gene Hackman. Then there's the exquisite model and actress Jennifer O'Neill that was possibly the sexiest looking woman the year before in 1971. Old Hollywood shames today's tasteless Hollywood right into the gutter. Angers me to see how much they now seek to diminish and destroy the talents and achievements of better artists nearly a lifetime ago.
Joel Grey: father of actress Jennifer Grey (best known for Dirty 🕺 and for being the Season 11 Champion of 💃 with the ✨) and the late Brad Grey (known for being the chairman of Paramount Pictures and the co-founder of what is now Brillstein Entertainment Partners with the late Bernie Brillstein)!
Would it be possible to get d.v.d of the entire awards show? And also, I would like to know if it would be possible to get a d.v.d of the 1972 14th annual grammy awards.
Oh please politics were always a part of Hollywood. Have you heard of the blacklisting in the 1950’s? Or how about Marlon Brando refusing his Oscar and Vanessa Redgrave's speech, both in the 70’s? Quit looking at the past through rose colored glasses.
It's such a shame the Oscar ceremony and winner's use this platform to express their opinions on politics war and racism these are important topics I get that but this ceremony is dedicated to artists and film maker's
Good music , good movie's , good cartoon's , good everything back then , 1972 was a great year .

Thank you
Hank Simms is the announcer.
If Dana Carvey and Billy Crystal had a kid, he would be Joel Grey.
For Joel Grey I don't see a boom. Too early for wireless. Was that dubbed?
Anyway I love this. Just curious.

Dana Long Joel Grey has one son, who is a chef. He is not the father of Brad Grey.
So Brad Grey and Joel Grey are not related to each other!
I don’t believe that Grey is his birth name.
I'll watch the Oscars again when they bring back the old school musical numbers
No monalogue included in this clip folks... If that's what you're looking for.
Is there footage of Sammy Davis Jr.'s quip. "Tonight, the Academy is honoring two films about my people, "Shaft" and "Fiddler on the Roof.""?

Jeff Bridges is so cute!!!
The announcer got it wrong.Ann Margret was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
Did Mackie and Aghayan do costumes?
Yes they did !
1:21 Arrrghgh look at that face.
Brought to you by Chevy, Jello and Shell Oil.
Now thats funny as they are all here in 2021
Does anybody have the full show?
This magical Oscar Opening is something we will never have with the political actors/actress worthless garbage of today.
You are so right.
This when Stars ⭐️ were Real an Oscar were Best
lol at flying mary poppins. she just hangin and hangin and hangin.
Where did the 1950's go? They skipped that decade.
That night Joe Namath escorted Raquel Welch to the Oscars.
Was that Joan Rivers as Mabel, the damsel in distress???
No tacky dresses or political opinions in the whole thing.

When the academy awards were decent now days is a disgrace
why they mention the godfather if this in the begginings of 1972
The Godfather movie was released in March 1972--and was already a smash hit--a few weeks prior to this April 1972 Oscar telecast.

Scarlett 🤦🏽♀️

Dreadful and useless opening number Just get on with the award presentations
It's like a parody of an Oscars production number. But I guess they all are.
I agree; very tedious
