    It's interesting how much the Academy used to respect animation. Not as much as live-action films, but still It's a shame that animation has been considered nothing more as a genre for kids by the academy for a while, and especially recently. I think what Guillermo del Toro said after Winning for his version of Pinocchio sums up the truth best.

    • @TheRed02151
      @TheRed02151 Рік тому +5

      @@lizebotha8783 that’s absolutely not true. There’s a a ton of anime that’s specifically targeted to just children. In fact one could argue there’s way more. That being said neither one is solely a “kids” mediam. That’s unfortunately the result of public misconceptions. I suspect it’s changing soon at least for anime.

      @@lizebotha8783 I have to disagree. Although yes there are plenty of anime made with kids in mind in my experience it seems that most anime actually is meant for adults. Or at the very least meant to be enjoyed by both. Japan and other countries around the world respect animation alot more than the U.S. does and doesn't just see it as something just for children. I honestly feel almost offended that those ladies at the end of the video were talking down so much about animated movies, and I'm not even that passionate about animated films. I can't imagine how hurt the actual animators must have felt. The U.S. needs to change this mindset like yesterday.

    This isn’t fair! Not to only animation, but to the animators themselves who work hard to make them. Each type of animation is difficult and takes time to make and the Oscar’s are treating it as it’s just something for kids?!! I’ll say it loud and proud, ANIMATION IS NOT JUST FOR KIDS!!!!! Animation was watched by everyone since the old days before they would play a cartoon short before a theatrical movie and they were targeted for general audiences. Now, rated G is extinct and everything has to be childish and lighthearted to appear more to children. What happened to good stories with characters you can relate to, meaningful plots and significant messages? It’s all about oh the animation looks good and so it gets an award but not the story itself? That was my problem with disneys frozen. It had good animation but the story itself isn’t that well constructed and appealing. It needed more things to tell since there were so many plot holes to it, and the villain twist felt forced because they wanted a main antagonist in the end at the last minute, when Elsa could have worked originally and then redeem herself in the end since she was capable of doing that. And another thing to add is that just because it’s a Disney movie doesn’t mean it should always win the Oscar because there are movies that are non Disney that have good stories. It’s like the academy awards don’t care anymore and that’s sad.
    Generally, animation should not be treated as kids genre. Animation is art and it has been a part of an amazing effect of cinema since the dawn of time. Regardless, people should see it as a work of art, not treat it is something for kids and kids only. That’s the point I’m trying to prove. Not only the Oscar’s but every award show should take note of that.

    I do have 3 Oscar news stories
    Despite that oscar Walt complained that animation wasn’t considered “serious cinema” by other filmmakers & producers for Snow White to compete against live-action dramas to even get nominated for Best Picture he expected to easily win
    Invasion of Iraq days before the 75th Oscars the pacifist Miyazaki had to be talked out by his lawyer from attending (despite the dedication of Lassiter & Disney to carefully distribute all the films) to avoid fallout from his anti-war boycotting like Michael Moore ended up getting that night that would manifest in Howls Moving Castle
    Tron was disqualified from the 1982 SFX Oscar as the academy felt the backlit animation & cgi production was cheating at moviemaking with computers over using practical effects and walkable sets like the rest

    And, I have to say I always have & always will be a Disney kid, but I'm glad that *"Rango"* won an Oscar. I feel like it would've been more forgotten otherwise & it's one of my favorite movies.

      I'm very well aware how animation has been viewed over time. I have studied it extensively, as you'd know as you've followed my content for years. After the 1928 technological boom / the rise of the Disney characters and the Looney Tunes... absolutely - animation was geared towards all audiences. Prior to that? Not at all - the Felix cartoons, the Alices, the Fleischer toons... all predominantly geared towards children. There was very much a stigma in the mid-to-late 20s.

    Beauty and the Beast was what made me a movie lover in the first place in my very early years, so it really was touching for me to learn later on that it was the first animated movie to be nominated for Best Picture. I guess even if Silence of the Lambs wasn't released that same year, they probably would've given the Oscar to some other live-action movie though. They really should've created the Best Animated Film category sooner. At least in the 80s there was Don Bluth's masterpieces to compete with Disney. And in the 90s there were movies like Batman: Mask of the Phantasm or the Iron Giant that were easily in the same league as Disney's best. Yeah, I wish animation was given more respect in the media too.
    On a side note, I still can't believe Bugs Bunny only won for Best Animated Short Film once out of all the classic Looney Tunes shorts he starred in throughout the 40s and 50s, and only got two nominations before that. Talk about being snubbed, though at least Bugs fared better than Daffy did. Not so unlike how like they're usually portrayed in their various on-screen pairings.

    21:00 - HOWEVER, I also would've called Halle Bailey, Naomi Scott and Lily James hypocrites since they we're portraying their live action counterparts of their respective animated Disney princesses, but since all three actresses we're forced to read those lines on a teleprompter, I'm not going be too harsh on them. But again, that's still a disrespectful thing to say about animation.
    I was on the other hand *SHOCKED* at this year's Academy Awards, to hear Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, of all people, give animation the praise and respect it as the medium it is. And kudos to Del Toro's Pinocchio for the win.

    A movie that should've received more attention was The Mitchells vs The Machines. It was so quirky, funny, and unconventional, and I think it was just really underappreciated.
    I really liked Kubo and the Two Strings. I didn't know that it had won for Best Visual Effects, until now. I'm surprised that no one really talks about it. It's also pretty underrated and unconventional.
    The Princess and the Frog deserves more attention. It kind of got lost in the shuffle of CGI movies. It's such a beautiful story. Just like Beauty and the Beast, it's about how love can affect change.
    Mr. del Toro was right. Animation is cinema, and it deserves more respect. To merely define as "just for children" really undermines it. Animation is for everyone.

    Couple interesting footnotes:
    The first "best animated short" awards weren't even oscar statues but were paper certificates that you can see Walt Disney standing with at 1:46 (the statue he has in that photo was an honorary oscar for the creation of Mickey) Later in the decade they were replaced by plaques, then ultimately the normal oscar statues in the 40s
    Now Disney was quite upset that Snow White wasn't given consideration for Best Picture, in fact the film got no recognition in its year of competition. That famous 7 dwarf honorary oscar wasn't given until 1939, a full year later

      Not too shocking that a VA wouldn’t win, given various stigmas seemingly attached. To voice acting in Hollywood… what’s probably the most shocking is that no one has even been NOMINATED. • @DaveLeeDownUnder
      @DaveLeeDownUnder  Рік тому

      I’m not sure they stopped in general after Huckleberry Hound… I’ve always been selective of which characters get Voice Evolutions and which ones don’t. If you look back at my videos, you’ll see that not every character has one. I decide on a case-by-case basis - depending how long the character has been around, how many vocal artists they’ve actually had, and (most importantly) how well the original video performs. Voice Evolutions, usually, only get a fraction of the views of the regular video… in the case of Huck (my least viewed Cartoon Evolution ever) it was simply not viable to spend the time making a Voice Evolution which would likely perform pretty poorly.
      You have to understand this is my livelihood and how I pay my bills - at the end of the day, the videos I choose to do are ultimately business decisions. I have to prioritise content that will perform and keep me paid. Additionally, I’m a one man team, and there’s only so much time in a month. Sometimes I just simply can’t find the time. I DO hope to one day revisit him, though!
