I really appreciate the spreadsheet that gives you a good idea of how it compares to it's competitors. There is a lot of research to make a decision on which way to go and you really help to make that a lot easier.
I would also add for, those who are concerned about power use, that these mini PCs are way lower in power usage than a typical desktop PC. My electric bill has dropped dramatically since I moved from my desktop to the HX90G. I would assume that same would be true of the HX99G.
I know the focus of this channel is gaming and specifically retro gaming, but I really appreciate the video-editing stuff you include in these mini desktop reviews. Would love to see what you'd recommend for a pure video-editing devoted pc at some point, if you ever have the time!
bro I'm definitely picking up one Of These ....Might not be This exact Model But As SomeOne Who Doesn't Care about All The 4K Max Out Graphics And Totally Cool With Like GameCube/Ps2 Graphics By Default😅 I See this As A W
I feel like if you are going to do this tiered approach you should maybe review 2 or 3 in a tier at once and have a more comparative review if you’re a bit bored with the process, it would probably be more efficient from a production pipeline as well. It does mean less videos which might be bad for your algorithm. Just thinking out loud. As always great work.
Just bought this mini PC. I’ve a Dell S2722DGM monitor is 165hz. I connected this PC to my monitor using HDMI cable but I can only go as high as 144hz. I don’t see any option for 165hz. The PC doesn’t have a display port so idk what to do. Any help?
I think you hit the nail on the head with how your audience views mini PC videos. I personally get bored of them very quickly as they feel very samey and usually aren’t retro gaming focused. Revisiting the space every once in a while as you’ve done here is very welcome.
Appreciate your practical approach, like explaining the internals and replaceable parts. The video editing test was great, not many reviewers do it. It can be a main system for both work and play. Good detailed review 👍
Man, why didnt i find your vid earlier. Been cracking my head trying to compare the tons of different models which suit me best and your vid starts by a excel sheet compairing them, great! 😉

I bought the Minisforum HX90G last december and, for the moment, I'm very satisfied. I didn't want to buy a big computer, I would like to buy a mini-pc but I'm a gamer too, I need a powerful GPU to play with my AAA games and more recent consoles emulation (Xbox, Xbox360, Switch...). It is possible with HX90G at a reasonable HD resolution (1920x1080) and I limited fps to 100. I can play at higher resolution or more fps but I choose to make a compromise to obtain better performance. I'm totally satisfied to play my games in HD on a big TV. If you want to play at 4K with more than 100 fps, bypass this product, it's not for you, you 'd better buy a more powerfull and onerous pc. This product and the new one HX99G are good compromise between price/size/performance.
Think it would be interesting to see the smallest itx build you could pull off with a mixture of new and used parts with both custom and off the shelf cases.
Im totally okay with you not doing as many mini pc reviews but i know this one was pretty special when it comes to form factor. I would suggest maybe review "roundups" where you can lump these tiers together in a batch and review them all while comparing their feature sets etc. (ex roundup 5 budget sub-300 mini pcs once a month or two and compare what they offer for the price directly to one another.) I know this probably also isnt ideal because frequent uploads are best for algorithm retention and what not but i thought Id suggest it otherwise. Have a great day!
I really like how you included high end emulation games on this review. I haven't thought about gears of war or quest for booty in a while. Hope to see more videos with different games being showcased.
I’m honestly impressed with the amount of cooling this machine has and how it can play games at 4k and botw at over 60fps. I already have a desktop pc that costed a bit more than this and I love playing games at 1440p. I still feel like in terms of overall value, the UM690 is the best for anyone that doesn’t also have the money for a 4k monitor

@@elijnr I actually had a similar issue with my desktop. You actually have to change the settings to that on the monitor itself. There should be buttons or a knob that lets you configure the settings of your monitor to change the refresh rate. I set mine all the way up and my pc displays smooth as butter
You read my mind at about the 14 minute mark when you noted the name of the channel and the amount of time spent on more modern fare. Not complaining, just had a chuckle about it. I don’t know if a better benchmarking procedure than how you’re doing it, though I do wonder if there’s a Russ-tastically unique way to execute testing? As you allude to, the actual bench numbers mean little to some of us, and the context is always where it’s at. I think the brilliance of your work is your special knack for presentation style, for example your openers are a masterclass in expectation setting and your conclusions are also beyond reproach. The middles are starting to feel like every other UA-camr’s content, and I’m wondering if there’s a way for you to stand out more/be more you? How do you bring more butter into things, so to speak (metaphorically, of course)? Again, not complaining, not hating, LOVE your work. It just occurs to me today that I don’t want you to get lost in the shuffle. You are distinct in your extensive, thorough sense of detail and organization and your ability to effectively communicate even difficult or convoluted concepts is top tier. I don’t have a suggestion, I’m not the smartest guy in the room by any means, just curious and wondering aloud how you might iterate and continue to grow your style. I don’t know if any of that makes any sense at all, but again I mean it with love and not as any kind of trolling critique. I watch every video start to finish, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think about how you might continue to surprise and delight moving forward. Being selective about the hardware and your tier system is a great direction, but how can you make benchmarking your own, is perhaps what I might be challenging you to consider along the way?
These are questions I ask myself all the time, so I appreciate you asking them too. I think the fact that I’m asking them means I’ll always find a way to inject some unique perspective into things!
I am very interested in checking out some of those midrange items in your spreadsheet. Basically, as long as it can do VR smoothly (like with my Index headset) then it's more than powerful enough for me since I don't do tons of PC gaming outside of my Steam Deck.
I recently added and removed the HX99G and its cousins from my Amazon cart like a dozen times during a sale, but ended up buying a used built to order desktop for about the same price (Ryzen 5800X, RTX 3070, 32GB RAM, 1TB NVMe, 4+6 TB HDDs). It has a terrible case, fan connections are wrong, and the cable management is atrocious so I spent a couple days working on it, so it did kinda make me wish I got something like the Minisforum. But it's been fun working on a desktop again after a few years of using a potato laptop, and I'm looking forward to setting up new and retro games on it!
Where did you purchase if I may ask? I have my HX99G delivering this week and love the small form factor, but wondering where the other options are at a larger size but same price.
@@kindofabigdyl I moved from the US to Japan, so you might be out of luck, but the place is called Goodwill (not the donation/thrift store). If it performs better than a more expensive model then that's good to know that the more expensive model is no longer worth it. That spreadsheet comparison was useful.
I got mine a month ago, and fitted it with two 2TB Samsung 980Pro SSDs. The temps on them, are, although I have installed two passive coolers on it, on around 55-58 degrees C (130-135degrees F), which I feel, is not very healthy. I am thinking about doing some mods for active additional cooling on the base of the HX99G. Also the RAM should be better cooled, I think. Do you folks experiencing any heat throttlíng from your machines?
Recently found the channel and no idea how I missed this one but I've just bought the HX77G (got it on Amazon on offer so cheaper than getting it direct from Minus Forum - £774). Its very similar to this, but with a different processor but very close performance. I was worried about PS3 but after seeing this I am not anymore. I might try batocera linux thing looks very interesting. Cheers for the info. I'd talked myself out of getting one yesterday and then I saw Amazon added an offer today and pulled me back in 😂 I just noticed we have the same screen, nice choice 😉
What I don’t understand is why most reviewers play with this on a monitor only, they don’t show anything on a large 4k tv, let’s be honest it’s a mini pc and a lot of people including myself will have it like a console on the main tv, how will it run on a 65 inch 4k television, would it fill the screen or will it struggle ?
I'll watch these videos, but I do think spreading them out time-wise is the way to go. As for this PC, man it's hard to justify that price unless you really need something portable and are afraid of building your own PC(I'd recommend watching videos of builds if you're afraid, it's really nor as tough as it looks, my 14 year old cousin built his own.
hi! I like how you review mini pc, its more complete and detailed, new subs here. Would like to ask which one is a better buy, this one or minisforum ms-A1 or do you have any better mini pc that you can recommend. I already reviewed both of them, i like ms-a1 bec of occulink port (for future used) and a newer model too while HX99G has a dedicated graphics. A bit confused. With your expert opinion and hands on on both mini pc. Which would you choose for a daily driver with some video editing, some games here & there and youtube and movie application. Thanks you.
NICE VIDEO AND GREAT JOB, I'M NEW TO THE MINI PC STUFF SOO MY Q IS CAN I PLAY 144HZ OR MORE WITH A HDMI PORT ? BECAUSE I TRAVLE A LOT AND I WANT BEST PEREFORMANCE THAT I CAN GET
Something cool to keep in mind about this pc, is since its a all AMD build, its compatibility with Linux will be very good. I personally use the Asus Advantage laptop, which has a 5900hx, and a 6800m gpu. Which should be very similar, and I get fantastic gaming performance out of it. As of right now I use NOBARA linux, but PopOS worked just fine.
@@m.israel2209 Would the OS increase the steamdeck performance? probably not honestly. NOBARA linux, is a opperating system created by the man, the myth, the legend Glorious Eggroll himself, I dont know if it would translate well to the steamdeck.
I can really see those PCs under your TV as a retro/currentish console. I have a media center oriented pc mic ATX case under my tv that this could easily replace. But I see another use as well. I have several collegues that got stuck during covid moving their iMacs back and forth between home and work because our company wasn't equipped everywhere with laptops and this could have saved hours of hassle moving hardware.
Do you think my games would run smoothly if I stored my roms collection on an external hard drive (mechanical)? I'd need about 8 - 16 To storage capacity, so I guess this would be a fraction of the price vs adding internal SSD to a HX99G. This is for my living room and the small form factor factor is important to me, ideally it would fit on a shelve of my media unit. Another option would be to buy a custom pc with an 8-16 To HDD, but this imply to sacrifice the small form factor and I expect it to be twice the price of the HX99G (1500$).
Based of the RAM and SSD that are included, do you recommend getting one with the RAM and SSD included or is it worth it to get your own and buy a barebones one?
16:37 Judging by your aim in Halo 2 it seems like something was off. Was there input delay issues or frame drops because it looked pretty awkward for you.

I don't understand the value proposition here, it's laptop hardware, for the same price as a laptop with that hardware, but ya get no screen or battery, and you get... what to make up for that?

about the bored part - that's why i stopped watching ETA Prime's videos. at one point all of them were basically the same. the things he reviewed were almost the same, the way he review them were the same, the things he said were basically the same and for the most part even the games tested were almost the same. so for some time i felt like i'm watching the same videos over and over. and on top i felt like they are getting more and more... and i was like, ok, is he just putting out the same videos with few tweaks, just to make viewings? and even if that was not the case, the fact i asked myself this question was enough to realize i probably need to back away from his videos at least for a while

As for this PC, man it's hard to justify that price unless you really need something portable and are afraid of building your own PC(I'd recommend watching videos of builds if you're afraid, it's really nor as tough as it looks, my 14 year old cousin built his own.
I like it but looking for something in the 3 sticks of butter size range. Thanks for the info.
another great video! Was the sound test performed during idle or load?
Thanks you.
no bs, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!
Would this increase steam deck performance?
This is an emulation beast for sure 👹
Based of the RAM and SSD that are included, do you recommend getting one with the RAM and SSD included or is it worth it to get your own and buy a barebones one?
get the barebones
Sticks of butter may be my new favorite "anything but metric" metric. 😄
16:37 Judging by your aim in Halo 2 it seems like something was off. Was there input delay issues or frame drops because it looked pretty awkward for you.
Great review!
@Retro Game Corps
Did you see Gamer Nexus' review of the HX90? Seems like these have some quality control issues and false marketing (liquid metal splattered all over the interior, no carbon fiber). Did you have this issue? Opinion?

Russ I love your channel please tell me what mini pc can emulate OG Xbox and playstation 3 thanks for your in-depth reviews and focusing on mini pc that's good and affordable👍
When did you order it, and how long did you have to wait before it shipped ?
This is right up my alley in the price point area however desktop space isn’t really an issue for me so I guess I could just build a decent rig for $1K- $1.2K but I always thought I’d have to spend 2 to 3g’s to really get a nice machine
What would be better for PS3 and other high-end Emulation, this or the NUCXi7?
The onexplayer fan sound little bit annoying, so 10:00 thank you for that it’s so helpful,
I don't understand the value proposition here, it's laptop hardware, for the same price as a laptop with that hardware, but ya get no screen or battery, and you get... what to make up for that?
Wow... impressive mini PC !!
Thank you for the spread sheet, thought about a Neptune ......
This or the NUCXI7 also from MinisForum?
Hey friend, I am looking for something that can run and play for 2 players games like super smash bros melee/mario kart or samurai showdown 1&2, what do you recommend? Is g11 pro a good option?
the butter comparison sent me
What game is in that shadowbox next to your desk? Never seen it before
Is this mini pc good for photo editing and light 3d molelling, like Fusion 360 and a bit of Blender?
How does Minisforum UM790 Mini-PC with Ryzen 9 7940HS and Radeon 780M
compared to
Minsiforum Neptune HX99G Mini-PC with Ryzen 9 6900HX and Radeon 6600M?
That’s a really good question
I ordered, received and been happy with the UM790. The following is response from Minisforum: "According to the test Ryzen 9 7940HS CPU have better performance. For the GPU,HX99G with a discrete graphic card 6600M, it is better than 780M.
It depends on your choice,if you need to play large games and have certain requirements for game graphics, or if you need to perform intensive graphics processing, you can consider choosing the HX99G. Otherwise UM790 pro will be a good ...
Thanks & Regards

Is the power cable long enough to have the brick on the floor and the HX99G on a standing desk?
Will this thing edit video better than the um690 I need a decent computer to edit video on resolve. Any suggestions as I have a budget of about 300 to 500 bucks could do more but don't want to.
Russ and everyone, question.. Should I go for the Steam Deck, or wait pre-order the AYN Loki? I want something strong that will be future proof and will emulate just about everything.
Hello, I just want to ask what is the name of your wireless keyboard?
That design is very marvel ass 2016
I am curious as to what your opinion is when it concerns the ACEMAGICIAN AM06Pro
Thank you 🙏
How are the Minisforum PCs to upgrade the preinstalled OS drive. Is it as simple as cloning the drive?
Hi any chance of reviewing miniforum Hx80g it looks better value for money
checking out some dell G15 laptops for the same price or cheaper. They seem to be a better deal overall.
You can easily go in 1440 p with fsr!!!
Hej I have minisforum hx99g ryzen 9 64gb ram ,my question is, can i connect external gpu to this mini pc ?
19:33 Wouldn't putting Batocera on an ssd using that second slot inside the pc be better than a usb flash drive?
Hate to break it to ya, but Bioshock Infinite and Halo: Reach ARE retro games now :D
How do I ensure I'm using the RX6650M and not the other video adapter? I'd like to use the USBC4 on the back if possible instead of the bulky HDMI to connect to my portable monitor.
I have a portable monitor, so I wonder what is the power supply of that usb4 port? Can I link my monitor to hx99g with only one usb-c cable?
Will this work with an external hard drive? If I load Batocera and the roms on the hard drive?
I have the HX90G. Same system but has the 5900hx cpu. Not sure this would be a big upgrade from that but I use mine for batocera.
At that price point you are better off buying a gaming laptop with a better gpu or just going mini itx and using more space.
Thanks Russ
Does this HX99G run VR competently?
How it performs (power/noise) comparing to latest Xbox?
about the bored part - that's why i stopped watching ETA Prime's videos. at one point all of them were basically the same. the things he reviewed were almost the same, the way he review them were the same, the things he said were basically the same and for the most part even the games tested were almost the same.
so for some time i felt like i'm watching the same videos over and over. and on top i felt like they are getting more and more... and i was like, ok, is he just putting out the same videos with few tweaks, just to make viewings? and even if that was not the case, the fact i asked myself this question was enough to realize i probably need to back away from his videos at least for a while
Is this good for video editing with Adobe Premiere?
Is it somehow possible to connect the HX99g to an external Radeon Rx 6600m, and run dual graphics cards?
Hello sir ...I just bought the same PC today and I didn't get to play I turned it on for the first time and I'm stuck in the BIOS set up and can't exit ...can you please help or send info about how to fix it please
Any chance you could post how you get Demon's Souls running that smooth on these AMD systems?
Would running EMUDECK still perform well on STEAM OS?
Or you could go the ETA Prime route, and review everything ever released ever-ever, even though many of them are practically the same…
… don’t get me wrong, his channel’s fine. But I find myself bothering with it less and less.
hey Retro, can you do a video on the Intel nuc serpent canyon, I would like to see its PS2 PS3 and Xbox emulation
Can we use an external GPU?
What’s the point. You are better off just buying mini itx then paying a premium for something smaller then extra for going external gpu
Yes you can. The 2 ports on the back are USB4 at 40gb transfer rate so if down the line you want to hook up a let's say a 4070 card or so you can! eBay will be your friend at finding cheap used video cards.
I'm a little confused. This thing can't play God of War on the PS2 at 4k? I thought it was supposed to be a little beast?
Beelink only took 16 sec to complete the video rendering. Wonder which is better now
Hey guys would this be a good option if I just wanted to run Diablo 4?
so who is better this or geekom a8 ?
For anyone wondering I’ve this pC and I play Apex legends. I play 1440p low settings and I hit 144-160fps constant frames
Which monitor is that?
It's a Lucious BBC, Big Black Computer.
Any idea if they will get more 100s its sold out
awesome video
