How To Create a Vintage Postcard Design (Illustrator & Photoshop Tutorial)

- In today's Illustrator and Photoshop tutorial I'm going to take you through the design process for creating a vintage postcard design, based on the postcard design style known as "large letter", which was popular throughout the mid-20th century. Often accompanied by the words “Greetings from…”, these postcards presented the name of a place with faux 3D type effects and featured a variety of pictures of that locale clipped within the text face of each letter. We'll use the tools available in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop to replicate the visual traits of those original souvenirs.

Instead of going to 3D and Materials > Extrude & Bevel go to 3D Materials > 3D (Classic) > Extrude & Bevel (Classic) and it will show the old layout he uses in this video!

For the people using Ai 2023, to make the 3d text you have to go to Effect>3d and materials>3D Classic and then to extrude and bevel classic.

Wow Chris, this was VERY difficult for me but I stuck through the tutorial for 5 hours, switching in between your blog post and this video and some other people's videos as I have never done a mask on a layer before (6:00) and I could not Match Color (learned that you have to set the image to RGB Mode) but boy I am SO pleased with my results! Thank you for the tutorial: as of 2022 this tutorial is a bit different with the new 3D and materials. I figured it out up until Object > Expand appearance @ timecode 3:07. It now appears to be a rasterized image instead of a vector. Any tips/tricks/ suggestions

The scale matters- if someone is using say inches rather than pixels- also what happens if you're using O's or other curved letters for the stage after the 3D boarder? You can't create the color change using this method.

Hi, great content! Is there a way to only use Photoshop for this? How would I do the same effect to the text if I had no illustrator?
I can't seem to expand the appearance even though I've followed every step. This has happened to me before. Any ideas??
I'm trying to offset my text but when I choose 2 px it appears round, not sharp like yours is. Why would it be doing that?

How do you fill the area with black after you inverse it?
Make sure you have the mask layer selected, then choose the Paint Bucket tool, then black color and click in the border area.
I just figured it out, when he says to "fill it with black to erase it from the mask" he means to just hit backspace. Hope this works for you.

hey, i dont know if its the right place to ask, but I'm having a lot of issues with the 3D and bevel effect. after applying the same options, each and every single individual letter just turns on its side for some reason? is there anything im doing wrong or missing?

Hello, if your extrude and bevel wont work because of "not enough RAM", try closing some tabs or other apps. Idk if it works for everyone but it worked for me
Is this normal that i lose quality of the font when i tranfer it to the 3d effect??

Was attempting to do this today but CC has changed the 3D tool drastically. Do you see a way it's still possible???

@@jasongrant305 I figured it out, there is a 3D (CLASSIC) option that works. It's at the bottom in the "3D and Materials" menu.
@@jasongrant305 I had the same problem but I'm struggling with the offset path, mine is supper bubbly while in the tutorial it's very sharp. Any advice?
How did you add the white background to the secondary text?
Might be a white colored drop shadow, or just a copy of the text placed in behind a few pixels below.

Does the step at time stop 3:20, where you change the color with the direct selection tool, still work in the latest version of AI?
Yes it does, I have the '22 version - it took me a while to get through this step too :) The magic is in not selecting '3D and Materials -> Extrude and Bevel', but you should apply the effect through '3D and Materials' then '3D (Classic)' then 'Extrude & Bevel (Classic)'. Hope that helps!

The program won't let me select the bottom extruded portions, so I can't add the orange colour :(
I made this last year and I need to do it again this year but now with the new updated it is 3d and materials and it doesn't give me the option to change the surface option. Do you know how I could fix this? :(
With the new updated version, go to Effect -> 3D and Materials -> 3D (Classic) -> Extrude & Bevel (Classic)... Hope this helps!
so @ 3:23 he direct selects the bottom part of the letters- letter O does not have a bottom part and is one with the sides. what am I doing wrong??

I achieved this by selecting the white around the postcard edge with the magic wand with a tolerance of 10

Im using Illustrator 28.?? and when I remove shading in the bevel and extrude it just makes a square around the text ..doesnt define the edges at all. Which version of Illustrator are you using?

How do you do no shading in AI2023?
I just figured it out today. You dont go to 3D Extrude and Bevel but there is a setting 3D (Classic). Its the last option

Did you ever find the answer to this question? I am having the same issue. I go to Lighting in the newest version but I do not see any option to turn off shading, or do "no shading." I can only guess that the settings need to be turned down, or something like that.
I just found it! Effect > 3D and Material > down at the bottom is: 3D (Classic) > Extrude & Bevel (Classic) > then you can pick all the settings as the video describes

Hey Chris is this a recording from 08/05 - 2017 :) when you made the Tutorial for your blog ? or have you remade it and the recorded it ? It is so Funny i have made 3 artworks of that kind a month ago. I always love to see other designers workflow. because I can always learn something new or get inspiration how to approach a design/artwork process in another way that i normaly would do

absolutely cannot get extrude to work grrrrr this is why i hate illustrator!!! I carefully select the outline layers and send to back, i follow your instructions STEP BY STEP and it still doesnt work, all i get is the main test the same colour as the background have tried soooooooo many times now and it makes ZERO sense
