Trực is a Sino-Vietnamese and is a "play on words," similar to what English speakers would call slang.. It comes from a word for bamboo (and originally meant "straightforward). But, the lady in the market was telling you not to wear it because it's a slang word that means "to take turns" or in English we would say "on duty." It would be the equivalent of wearing an arm band that said "On Guard." LOL

Before my uncle died we took a trip to Vietnam. He stepped on a land mine and it was only him surrounded by 3 Vietnamese. One of them tried to save his life, he still lost a leg and he never forgot that man. When we went he had already passed but we got to talk about his family. He would never talk about the war but he told the story of my uncle so many times. They all embraced us. It’s like these people don’t hold any grudges against us for what we did over there. There was a pilot from Scotland who caught Covid at the start of the pandemic. He ended up in Vietnam at the other side of the world and was the sickest man in their country. Their doctors and nurses fought non stop to keep him alive but that wasn't the most remarkable part. The most remarkable part was that at one point there was news that the man may need lung transplants 26 people came forward to offer their lungs so the pilot could survive. This would have been a death sentence for them. Thankfully they wouldn't have been allowed to give their lungs as live donors. But 26 total strangers were willing to die so that a guest in their country would be given the best care their country could offer. What amazing, remarkable, kind and beautiful people. I used to work in refugee resettlement in the states. There was this long slow process of allowing Vietnamese who had supported us in the war to trickle into the US for citizenship. I worked with a majority of the cultures on the planet in this job. The Vietnamese were some of the most industrious people I've ever met. And they seem to have more internal fire than you see in a lot of peoples.
Are those that fled communism representative of all Vietnamese? Those that fled persecution and arrived with no possessions and no safety net tend to have the most determination to succeed.
@@nikobellic570 You would think that if the country was actually divided into two separate nations in the war, the split was perhaps between those who previously supported the French, i.e., wanted French nationality, and those, most likely the very poor and villages, who were subjugated by both the colonisers and the "vichyste" Vietnamese. Where that line is today would be an interesting story point.

@@mithrandirthegrey7644 No, I've never eaten dog. Although not in Vietnam, while in the Siem Reap area of Cambodia, we went on a village tour and there was a "restaurant" that served dog that we visited. I put "restaurant" in quotes because it was little more than some picnic tables and a barbeque grill in front of someone's house that regularly served dog. There was young boy, probably 10 years old, preparing to make sausage by cleaning out the dog's intestines on an old tree stump with flies landing on everything. My wife hasn't eaten meat since. What I found even stranger was that the family running the "restaurant" had a pet dog which was running around, apparently happily. I even asked if the dogs they served were a different breed than the dogs they kept as pets, but nope. I would think that the dog would suffer from PTSD watching his cousins routinely get killed, chopped up, and barbecued daily, but I guess not. Still, that being said, I'm not necessarily against people eating dog. If you travel enough, you quickly learn that if something is edible, some people somewhere will regularly eat it. For them it is completely normal. For other people it is abhorrent. It is all based on the culture you grew up in. Even if I think some food is abhorrent, I wrestle with questions like: Who am I to judge? Why does my own culture find it acceptable to eat just some animals but not others? I think that is the great thing about traveling. If you do it with an open mind, it is quite eye-opening and educational. Travel can teach you not only about other cultures, but so much about your own culture as well.
Growing up i watched the Vietnam war and the protests on TV. In 1976 i met my first Vietnamese as students in college. They escaped Vietnam by boat and were referred to as boat people in the media. My college friends were warm, friendly, gracious, industrious and extremely grateful to be Americans. Later in the 90s I lived in a South Philly neighborhood which became a large resettlement for Vietnamese refugees. They opened a number of businesses ranging from food markets, restaurants, tailor shops and novelties. Wonderful neighbors, never any acrimony toward Americans and a lot of empathy in understanding that war is hell for all involved.

@@rubyredgrapefruit1454 Time provides a lens through which the truth can be seen more clearly. The media portrayed the American involvement in Vietnam as negative and unwanted imperial interference. Did you try eating dog?
@@mithrandirthegrey7644 lol

Later in the 90s I lived in a South Philly neighborhood which became a large resettlement for Vietnamese refugees. I'm so glad you decided to go to Vietnam. I absolutely love Vietnam, that country is really the light from the darkness and I'm glad you are going to get to share it with everyone. See if Sunny is there and go visit him for a crossover episode.
I did 1500 miles, 2400km from Hanoi to ho chi min city via halon Bay in January 2019 on the same motorbike.
It took us 3 weeks
It was cold and raining in Hanoi when we set off too.
I nearly died 10 times a day because of the crazy roads but it was one of the best trips I've done
At the time that was my last trip of 27 countries in 3.5 years
I even went to Rwanda and Uganda alone to see the mountain gorillas too
Vietnam was one of my best trips without a doubt
Lucky man! Best of wishes mate!
That must have cost something
Wild
@@SIStefanov thank you
@@Its_Me_Romano it cost over 30k altogether for the 27 countries
It was worth it though
Kicked out France, USA, followed by China, then popped next door and kicked out the Khmer Rouge .
Not up for invasion the Vietnamese.
And remain lovely people with a great culture
They also defeated the mongols 3 times i believe.
“trực ban” translates to “on duty” pretty sure that armband is one worn by government officials in vietnam
It sounded like she was telling him it would be worn by a prison guard in charge of a work detail or something like that. All I know is if I were in a foreign country and someone literally told me “You shouldn’t wear that” I’d take it off. Haha.
was looking for this comment. How is he still wearing the arm band??
Must be rather surreal seeing a random Englishman dressed as a government worker lol
@@lolyyyy8729 anyone else would have taken it off but him. 😂
@@donjohnson5123 you haven’t been watching this channel for very long have you? Lol
Welcome to Viet Nam! Thank you for bringing my lovely country to the world! You have a deep understanding of VietNam's history that makes me really respect you. Have a wonderful journey and watch out for the weather!
Can you explain to us what trực ban means?
@@ZemanTheMighty “Trực ban” or “ban thực hiện ca trực” That is a team with a few people ( a learder + co-leader + staff) working in shifts. Their missions maybe: protect the company‘s assets( security+privacy), maintain the production line, report the technical problems,…The leader can wear a red armband or a hat like him.
I love these new adventures Bald , keep them coming !
I was recently in Vietnam to make a video an got this same rainy weather however I had a different experience to experience the side from here! Nice video!!!
I've been watching this channel for years now, moved to Saigon myself recently!
I rode that same bike from Ha Giang to Cao Bang, best adventure I've had! Amazing scenery and friendly people.
I did the same trip 2 months ago!
Photos and videos just don't do the scenery justice! I was lost for words.
Vietnam cracked me up on my last visit. The amount of stuff crammed onto scooters was unbelievable. Even seen an upside down table and 4 chairs strapped on the back.
that's mid, there are heavier things which are crammed on motorcycles
Wonder if you have seen an entire familiy of five fit on one before, cause it is quite a sight
I see that you have never been to India lol. I have seen a whole family of five, the family cow, baskets of clothing, and a matress all strapped to one tiny scooter
Never underestimate the towing capacity of a 50cc scooter
Just arrived in Saigon myself, heading south to north. Gonna be fun seeing yours and Ben's experiences and impressions at the same time.
Good luck on your trip
I was in the USAF at Phu Cat AB, near Qui Nhon from Feb to Jul 1968.
Thank you very much for the outstanding video.
Thank you for visiting and learning about Vietnamese culture and history. I hope the video will have more Vietnamese subtitles. There will be a lot of Vietnamese people watching and following your channel.
So great to see Tim join your adventure!! Absolutely love Vietnam, they have the friendliest people in the world!
Amazing Bald!!! I love that you go to a completely different country and explore the area without being afraid, you take us to different locations and tell interesting educational stories about the country and events that involve those locations. You're awesome man!! keep it up!! the most charismatic youtuber for sure!
Why would anyone be afraid in Vietnam or anywhere in Asia? 😂 There's barely any crime there.
Thanks you so much. From Viet Nam with love❤
Fantastic Bald! I have been living in Vietnam for 5 years and it's an amazing place. People and culture are awesome! Didnt know you were coming but delighted you did.. The blue and red flag you spotted is the flag of the National Liberation Front for South Vietnam or as the Americans called the force the "Viet Cong". Have a great time!
But they eat dog, so are dirty savages.

Glad to see you in a happy place. Keep in mind as you travel that about 70-75 percent of the people living in Vietnam were born after the fall of Saigon and are tourists in their country when it comes to the war era.
An interesting country with an incredible history for all the wrong reasons. Thank you for inviting us on this incredible journey to a life and culture we just wouldn't get to see. Cheers👍
I get the feeling that the definition of "protector" might mean something a little more sinister
Probably in the same vein as "protection money".
Sth like capo maybe
Also the army dude was wearing a vietnam veteran T Shirt lol, talk about distasteful.
I got the same feeling too judging the way that lady laughed.
Ya “protecting” slaves from leaving work is what she meant 😂
i am vietnamese an i love your video. this bring me the real sence about the north vietnam that i never go there.
Your adventurous spirit, I am grateful for. The charisma you carry for humanity speaks volumes, thank you for showing us the whirled that most of us would never be able to see and doing it in a way that every time I see you post a knew video, I actually feel some excitement, as if I were going on the trip with you. Welcome to Vietnam! Thank you for introducing our country and people to friends around the world. If there is a chance, I would like to invite you to visit my hometown.
Dude, I have been a long-time follower of you, I'm really glad that now you have come to my country!
Ah sweet I had a question why is it that so many Vietnamese people seem to have totally forgiven the US for the war I suspect it was from it being so unpopular in the US but I don’t really know anyone who’s lives in Vietnam
@@nothanks9503 It is a part of our personalities and education as well. We are taught to look towards into the future and leave the hatred behind. Thats why.

Hi vọng bạn đã không bị ốm sau khi trải qua thời tiết khắc nghiệt tại Việt Nam. Cám ơn bạn vì đã có một cái nhìn khách quan và thiện cảm về Việt Nam.
I have toured northern Vietnam by bike (with no idea what I am doing on a motorbike) and was blown away by the beauty of the place, the food and the kindness of the people helping me multiple times when breaking down and needing somewhere to stay. The highlight meeting a Chinese tribe and getting copious amounts of rice wine fed to me. Definitely a bucket list activity
Always looking to see a new culture/meet nice people and beautiful scenery and good food! Sounds like a wonderful experience. I'll have to try!
So how does it work over there, do you need a license for a smaller motorbike? And if so, how do you obtain one?
@@zucced2087 Technically you do need a license and had I been nabbed by the police I would have probably copped a fine. But I dont even have a British driving license either, just a bit if prior experience with mopeds in Thailand. The roads in the far north of Vietnam and most rural places are bendy, undulating and quite slow moving. Therefore you raise a good point, hiring a motorbike for a week was the best stupid and reckless decision I ever made, luckily for me I got away with it. If you want to do things properly then you can take a motorbike test there if you don't already have a license.
@@Wimpleman awesome, thanks!
I traveled the north of Vietnam by motorcycle (I really hadn’t a clue how to ride one) & truly was taken back by the beautiful scenery, grub & the hospitality of the people who assisted me multiple times when I broke down!
"trực ban" means "on duty". For example, policemen or guards watch out the area or do their jobs. Btw thanks for making nice video and make sure to wear helmet while riding bike. Love from 🇻🇳
Trực ban không phải người canh gác b ạ. Trực ban là người trực nắm bắt tình hình trong ngày, nhận và phát mệnh lệnh.
Just like food there, helmets in Commie Vietnam don't pass safety tests, unfortunately. That's one of the reasons traffic deaths there top the list in the region.
@@UongKhueMinh trực ban trong tiếng anh nói như thế nào vậy bạn?
@@icareabouttheworld7038 Closest translation would be supervisor or official. Meaning the person responsible for making sure correct process is followed.
If an educated local told me "You shouldn't wear that", I would tend to listen to them.
As the Vietnamese, our ancestors simply didn’t hear no bell ringing and continued to fight to the end.
I am Retired Air Force and there were 8 Airman that lost their lives that served as Aierial Porters in their Carreer field that i myself retired from. I did not serve in Vietnam as i was too young. But i did enlist 3 weeks to the day after turning 17 yrs old back in Dec 18, 1976 and i was trained by Vietnam vets that had served there in Vietnam. Enlisting prior to Jan 1, 1977, all were considered of the Vietnam area and gained in Education from the Vietnam Education Veterans Bill.
And your point? The whole war was a farce. People don't know, but Ho Chi Ming had asked America for help because the French were trying to rule over them. I'm an American and so are you. That doesn't vibe with Freedom. I don't see honor in what America did.
I've toured extensively in the Far East, and loved Vietnam, largely because of the residents. Universally happy and welcoming. Tragic that the West could have sought to suppress such kind people.
Tragic, indeed. Massive respect to the Vietnamese people and leadership for putting this ugly past behind us. Vietnam is now looking more and more westward for security against their massive, belligerent neighbor that stole the Paracel Islands and also tried to invade them (but failed).
Tragic? Habitual is the word my friend.
I would love to go but apart from not affording it I heard they dont treat animals very well? particularly cats and dogs, that would upset me If I saw it.
The west didnt try to suppress its people it tried to ELIMINATE communism.. be somewhat educated before commenting something so igorant 😂
More like the West feared that the Soviets and Red China would turn Vietnam into another hellhole. Fortunately Ho-Chi-Minh didn't want that either, so the Vietnamese charted their own course after the war ended. Which is fair enough.
Just got back from Vietnam yesterday. Such a beautiful country.
Flippin heck. Wowzers. Another cool show by B n B! Thank you mate.
My husband introduced me to your videos and now we watch you on your travels. Thank you for combining education with entertainment. The best way to learn.
You picked the best time to go to Viet Nam, right at the beginning of Monsoon season lol!!!! Absolute unit bud, stay safe and look forward to part two, cheers!!!
I love that you chose to travel to Vietnam during monsoon season
I spent 10 days cycling most of the way from Hanoi to Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City about 11 years ago. I do remember the north basically had a temperate climate but, at some point, we crossed a smallish mountain range and the rest of the country heading south was totally tropical. So your weather should improve!
Very glad to see you in Vietnam, I was hoping you'd go sometime.
My girlfriend's family is Vietnamese, and I plan on going in the near future. It always has seemed like an amazingly beautiful country.
One of my strongest early memories is being with my grandfather at our wall in D.C. and him touching names of friends he lost. I think for a lot of Americans that is the idea of Vietnam. It's been a nice experience having that idea changed.
