Wonderful to see this! Fun fact: I danced with her (and a lot of other fans) on stage at a small club concert in Miami when she was releasing her second album. I have photo evidence somewhere, me dripping in sweat and her looking at the camera like a deer in the headlights. 😅 She was still relatively unknown because 'Paper Planes' from that album had not yet blown up. Big hug to you Fern 🤗
M.I.A was one of my introductions into indie music back in the days. Those artists you listen to as a teenager thinking how different you are. Maya truly shaped a huge part of my taste in music. Her influence is so underrated yet to be found everywhere. Her album M A Y A is basically an early hyperpop album but let's not forget: M.I.A will always be a rapper.
in my high school graduation work we did fashion show for parents, even local tv was there and for my model i chose matangi to play while my model slayed the runway...it was back in 2013 :))) yeah, big memories with this album
btw if you like getting tips to check artist out, definitely try Winona Oak, Eartheater or from the older ones MØ, Elliphant or Grimes :) Maybe you already reacted and i missed.
It's crazy that this album came out more than 10 years ago yet still sounds so fresh and unique. Matangi, MAYA & Kala are such groundbreaking and experimental albums!
Maya is easily one of the most influential artists of our time and is really like the female Kanye west if you look into it, seeing how many popular artists such as Travis Scott, Beyonce, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga and weirdly Radiohead?? Lol, have all sited her as an influence as well as artists such as Charli xcx, Rosalia, Azalea Banks, Grimes, FKA twigs and basically every modern day alternative artist you can think of has taken some aspect of Maya's music to make it their own, since virtually everything she has released has always been at least 15 years ahead of its time. She's also very remarkable for being able to break through into the mainstream with such an arguably divisive and unique sound, which paved the way and let many alternative artists of today to do the same, especially artists like Rosalia and Charli. Also the middle finger that she gave during her super bowl performance with Madonna actually sparked a massive controversy during that time, where the NFL sued her for 16 million dollars and getting her banned from the united states for a few years since she was deemed as a "Terrorist". That moment is now seen as the second most controversial moment in super bowl history right behind Janet's nipple gate. I also highly recommend you discover Kala, Arular, Maya, and Vicki leeks as well, truly some unique and revolutionary shit.
On behalf of everyone, thank you for doing this. It really is rare, which is unfortunate. So to see you really giving time and energy and openness to this record… makes someone like me reconnect with an album i have a deep connection to. Please please please react to Arular and Kala and Maya. Heck even Aim. Go for it. I’m subbing just for your personality
ik these comment requests can be annoying but if you wanna hear more of her, her 2010 mixtape 'vicki leekx' (which isn't on spotify but is on youtube and soundcloud) is insaneeee and i'd definitely recommend it :)
AHHHH so happy to see a MIA reaction!! Her work is soooooo ahead of its time: this album is funnily the first MIA album I ever listened to, I’m glad to be on this journey with you!
What a great reaction! I would say the albums before this are all just as great if not even better. MIA was so forward-thinking and creative with her soundscapes in a way few artists in hip hop really are. She's one of the most underrated innovators imo. Also, LOVE your eye makeup. It's so vibrant 🥰
I was obsessed with this album in HS. I remember my friends making fun of me for listening to “Indian Music” (nothing harsh), and if anything it just shows how important she is by bringing so many sounds from non-western cultures to the western audience. MAYA was the first album of hers I listened to though. This one, I remember she released a long mix on SoundCloud to promote the album that you later found out was a mix of most of the instrumentals from the album with some extras thrown in.
Kind of curious that actually, when M.I.A was on tour with this album, she used kind of kaleidoscopic lights and mandalas on stage ! ❤ btw, this is my favorite Album of her 💚
"Guess I'm in the air, you can smell me like Vicks" can also have a double meaning in that she's saying she's sick, as in she's cool. She's so sick she needs her vapor rub 😂
Omg yessss can u plzzzz react to her newest album? She doesn’t get the recognition she deserves bc of her controversial beliefs (nothing too bad just mainly conspiracy theories) but she is truly a pioneer in the music industry
MIA reaction???? RARE
i'll take it lol
Please check out her album Arular!!! And also Kala!! Arular is my favorite but Kala is a close second
YES PLEASE DO ARULAR AND KALA!!!
you need to do /\/\ /\ y /\ (maya), so ahead of its time and influential to the experimental hip hop scene
Omg yes! MAYA is the starting point of albums we are having these days like Brat. You would LOVE it, it's through the roof and absolute insanity.
@@mttssst FR plus100 on this it’s the blueprint and still holds today !!!
