SOPHIE came out as a trans woman with this album, so you can definitely see the themes of dysphoria, the immateriality of gender, living as your true self after a life of pretending and accepting your traumas and who you really are deep down
"I'm real when I shop my face" that lyric, like, you only get it if you get it. Body and gender dysphoria, trans identity, gender queerness, social media, the influence of the internet and the availability of technology, it's all there in that line. She was a genius, full stop.
I love seeing someone who just gets “it”. Some people listen to this type of music and just laugh and think it’s ridiculous. You really can “feel” this type of production and sound design, its so tangible and textured.
I'm blown away by it and so happy I got introduced to it through UA-cam subs !! I can't imagine never hearing it ... I think its for a particular type of mind haha !! one we here , all have ! Thank you by the way ! this is an awesome comment !
Fun Fact: SOPHIE came from Scottland and the album title sounds like "I love every persons insides" in a Scottish accent. She was a kind and caring soul. Rest In Power Queen 🏳️⚧️💞
When SOPHIE says "I don't even need to know your reason, it's ok to cry" while I'm crying about her passing feels almost like she's telling me personally that everything's going to be alright
This album is phenomenally produced. It would make for an crazy experience in a club/concert setting, the way it is mixed, with visceral sounds contrasting these beautiful vibes. But it's still very rewarding for headphone listening because of all the details you can discover. One of a kind
I’ve been into Sophie for so long, like way before this album. Her passing was an absolute tragedy but since her death I’ve seen so many people reacting to her music and although I and many others miss her dearly I love seeing her music finally get the appreciation it deserves
Whole new world represents the celebration of ego while pretend world represents the death of ego. This can easily be analogous with our journey from life to death. So bittersweet and beautiful!
I ADORE this album and consider it one of the most important records of the 2010s. It was such a gamechanger that expanded my understanding of electronic music in a different way. Songs like "Is It Cold In the Water", " Infatuation" and "Pretending" take me to another place and are utterly transcendental. I hope wherever Sophie is she's smiling down at us knowing that the impact of her music is not forgotten. She was such a remarkable artist ♡
Sophie also did a livestream that was basically the length of a whole album. It’s on UA-cam and it’s called “Heaven Suspended” it was her last full body of work before she died. I feel like you would really love it
It's strange how this album sets up the expectations in the 1st track which is so vulnerable and quiet and personal and then blasts your ears in the following tracks, so textural and glitchy and maximalist, abrasive and trippy. I could almost eat some of those sounds, love it.
Sophie's passing was heartbreaking to me, the first heartbreak of 2021. Her first album Product had the hugest influence on electronic music, allowing her to work in the studio with Madonna, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Charli Xcx, Kendrick L., and so many other big names. She was actually supposed to produce Lady Gagas latest album Chromatica, but Gagas record label felt like the experimental sound was too risky. This constantly happened to her with several different artists. She was constantly breaking musical boundries, but was never allowed to achieve the mainstream success she worked for because of big record labels. Not to mention being dragged to the Grammys, only to be misgendered and robbed of her award. She was such a strong fierce presence in the face of so much negativity directed at her gender expression, and her music. But she is widely known as the mother of hyperpop. She definitely paved the way for so many great artists.
This is incredibly emotional ... What a QUEEN ... She deserved so much more ,,, but at the same time she has lit up so many peoples hearts and parts of themselves they didn't know they had !
The thing that pissed me off the most about the Grammys is that she lost to A REMIX ALBUM. I mean I love Justice, and the album is great, but how can you take away the win from such a boundary breaking album. Just makes me sad
this album means so much to me as a trans person and when sophie passed i genuinely couldnt process it because her music has helped me through so much. im a trans masc, queer, and disabled person living in texas and her music has made me feel safe despite my rights always being discussed and taken away. i miss her a lot and being able to share her music and perspective of the trans experience is really amazing and beautiful. im so happy you listened to this.
Definitely suggest listening to PRODUCT. Its a compilation/unofficial album of early singles she released. She also produces a few of Charli's songs. "Out of my head" on Pop 2 was produced by her, as well as everything on the Vroom Vroom EP. But I definitely suggest checking out Pop 2 first, cause that features Caroline Polacheck as well.
This a building block for hyperpop alongside Product. She never did no wrong may she rest in peace. I discovered my love for this sound and realized how much she'd contributed after a livestream of this album when it first dropped.
I'm obsessed with this channel and I never even got that into Sophie, invested now tho. also for some reason I think fern would love M3LL155X by FKA twigs
What an amazing reaction. Fern you took us to space! Thank you. So many thoughts...I'll be honest when you read the lyric from It's OK to Cry & spoke about them. I did cry. In fact, I sobbed!! No really sobbed. What an amazing artist, huh? New to me too & already gone. Why does that hurt me so much? I love to see you love music. Thanks for the ride!
I remember so clearly... The day SOPHIE died, I stared at the sky and listened to Pretending and just cried. At the end of you reacting to Pretending I was crying... SOPHIE's death has been so fucking hard for so many. Ever since she has passed I've struggled listening to her because it absolutely depresses me... She is uniquely amazing.
I'm still dealing with her passing. It just... isn't fair. I know as well as anyone that life isn't fair but I want to throw a tantrum, the world needed Sophie and it's broken me that we lost her voice in this age of madness.
@@voodoosleeper I feel this too hard. It's a deeply hard life to live, not even taking into account differences. You and I are still here! We exist. 100 years from now, nobody can take that from us.
Look up "Pretending Faster" if you wanna know the origin of it. "'Pretending' was made from a song I wrote called 'Pretending', which was a full song with lyrics and vocals and everything. And then I just thought it was a bit too literal. When I really manipulated it and extended it, I felt it kept the sentiment of the song without being so literal. Your reaction to this was beautiful. So glad Sophie could touch you the way she touched all of us when she was here. You were on point when she said her music will live on.
totally enjoyed this video so much, watching you being so transparent with someone as important as Sophie for me it just fulls my heart. you should react to Arca’s self titled “Arca” album, she is an mind blowing producer and artist, she was a pretty close friend with Sophie, is a really good choice if you wanna keep trying more experimental music.
yes! faceshoping is soo screechy industreal and aggressive especially at the end after such a unecspected soft part. love it! also love builds when more and more instruments and sounds added. like want this build to go forever. it might soung like noise made of too much instruments but there us something.. this type of music not for.. its not a "story with plot", but feelings and expirience
I usually skip to the songs I love most with persons listening and reacting but…Not for you! Your energy and vibe and deacation and positivity genuinely is so warm to see and your genuine positive reactions ❤❤❤
I believe if you speed up pretending super duper fast you can hear Sophie say “IT WAS ALL PRETEND” or “I WAS JUST PRETENDING” hinting at her career and gender and it gives chills, that’s the sound that’s in the background and growling in the middle
Thank you very very much for this video Had a wee cry of joy watching you reacting to the album not going to lie, but SOPHIE said it in the beginning of the album "It's ok to cry"... This is so wonderful , thank you so much truly ! I was blown away by this wonderful album honestly . Makes me so very sad to think she isn’t here to carry on creating , but her work will last light years with how brilliant it is ! Oooh thank you I shall write them down .
the story with the song Pretending is that it was a full on song with lyrics and everything but she felt like if she took about a 20 second clip and timestretched it out to almost 6 minutes captured the same idea of what she was trying to portray with the full original song... the "motorbike" sound was one of those low growly vocals slowed way down
I'm very happy your channel was recommended to me. This made me feel like I'm listening to the album in a new angle because of your thoughts and insights about it. I felt like I was in the space most of the time I'm listening to this album, especially around the ambient ones. I hope you'll check out the remix album of this one, it's just as interesting, especially if you're into techno. Looking forward to watch more from you!
So happy to hear that you love this album. This was such an in depth review, and loved how attentive you were with all the details, because that is what I enjoy thoroughly with SOPHIEs music. Loved watching this! I would recommend listening to the Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides Non-Stop remix album, it’s two continuous mixes of reworked versions of this album. What I love about it is it feels like an expansion of all of the sonic ideas from this album but taken even further!
would love to see your reaction to flume's hi this is flume mixtape! sophie features on a track and flume said its primarily inspired by her and other incredibly creative (and mentally insane) electronic producers :) that mixtape is honestly the craziest and glitchiest 38 minutes ive ever lived through!!

Only 13:00 minutes in and I've cried and laughed my ass off at the first two song reactions. Don't know why I'm having such an emotional reaction to this
I'm also gonna recommend listening to Cecile Believe. She is SOPHIE's vocalist, with the exception for It's Okay to Cry which SOPHIE personally sang because it was her coming out song. But please react to Cecile Believe. Her music is also experimental and her voice is amazing.
I first heard ponyboy on a tv show called O.A. and took a while to figure out who it was but she has inspired me in my music, production, and sound design. I'm currently working on sound design inspired from her sound design and them I'm going to make my second album using the sound design stuff I'm making. I just released my first album January 5th 2022 and its all electronic and instrumental stuff which i like but they don't hit hard like Sophie's work. i have my own sound but i want to bring in some of the stuff that's in ponyboy and faceshopping and the other hard crazy sounds that are in her other songs but i want to make sure it still sounds like my sound but still be clear what my inspiration is. the way i compose and the way i do sound design, it always sounds like my stuff bc i am self taught and only know how to make music the way i do it and i just try to make the music that i personally love which I'm happy as long as I like it and even if its not a popular sound I'm sure there will be a small group of people that love music that will be able to enjoy my stuff as long as they are able to find my music. I do have to work on promoting my music in a way that cost nothing bc I'm poor.
doesnt need to be in a video but you should def check out the remix album! its called a remix album but it feels like a separate project imo, just more of sophie's genius production. (and great reaction as usual
still hope that someday you're gonna react to sevdaliza bc i think you will fall in love with her music and vocals 💓 you are so cool tho, with love from Russia hehe
you should react to the remix of this album! Oil of every pearls un-insides non-stop remix album! is one of my favorite projects or album she has ever made.
pls pls pls listen to her remix album, which is both nonstop and also a whole collection of both remixes and original mixes of the songs from this album, which you would probably love
Watching the Faceshopping music video is quite an experience. If you can’t handle flashing images very well you will die 10 times over while watching it but it’s SO good, it really adds to the song.
Just found your channel! And I ❤️. I think it’s interesting how I always think of very apocalyptic imagery rather than an alien spa 😅 gotta love the subjectiveness of art
If y'all look up Sky Wire Mashups on UA-cam, they did a B E A U T I F U L RIP mashup of pretty much every song SOPHIE's released, produced, and been featured on....and EVERY song is listed in the description 😘.
If you enjoy this album you should check out "Hi this is Flume" by Flume, it is an album with a visualizer. Sophie had helped with the sound design on some of the tracks. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on it!!!

I'm also gonna recommend listening to Cecile Believe. She is SOPHIE's vocalist, with the exception for It's Okay to Cry which SOPHIE personally sang because it was her coming out song.
But please react to Cecile Believe. Her music is also experimental and her voice is amazing.
You're reaction had me do some listening of Sophie myself. Sophie Live stream Heav3n Suspended... Kinda reminds me of Kraftwork?
So… Oil of every pearls un-insides means „I love every person insides“ ✨
6:47 a QUIET album? Just found your video reminiscing on her music. Thank you for this
I first heard ponyboy on a tv show called O.A. and took a while to figure out who it was but she has inspired me in my music, production, and sound design.
Omg pls reacting to SOPHIE “product” album!✨💗
thanks!
reacto to shygirl -cruel practice
"Alias" EP first! 👅
Yes to thisssssss
Second this. Listen to Alias. SOPHIE produced Slime
cruel practice i agree
doesnt need to be in a video but you should def check out the remix album! its called a remix album but it feels like a separate project imo, just more of sophie's genius production.
(and great reaction as usual
still hope that someday you're gonna react to sevdaliza bc i think you will fall in love with her music and vocals 💓
you are so cool tho, with love from Russia hehe
Right?
Definitely ! I really look forward to it 💕
you should react to the remix of this album! Oil of every pearls un-insides non-stop remix album! is one of my favorite projects or album she has ever made.
I loved this reaction, so honest and you're so lovely
fun fact ; pretending sped up says “i was just pretending”. they have it on youtube it sounds quite scary but very pretty. she’s so creative
pls pls pls listen to her remix album, which is both nonstop and also a whole collection of both remixes and original mixes of the songs from this album, which you would probably love
Watching the Faceshopping music video is quite an experience. If you can’t handle flashing images very well you will die 10 times over while watching it but it’s SO good, it really adds to the song.
Yeh I’m pretty sure faceshopping was on a Beyoncé clothing advert
God I love both you and Sophie so much
Just found your channel! And I ❤️. I think it’s interesting how I always think of very apocalyptic imagery rather than an alien spa 😅 gotta love the subjectiveness of art
pls react to sophie's heav3n suspended livestream set
Sophie elemental spirit is Water and Earth. Or possibly water and fire. Beautiful deep spirit.
love that you made this video and gave each song such respect... love sophie, will always wonder what could've been
If y'all look up Sky Wire Mashups on UA-cam, they did a B E A U T I F U L RIP mashup of pretty much every song SOPHIE's released, produced, and been featured on....and EVERY song is listed in the description 😘.
So excited 😆
we’re still waiting for a SEVDALIZA reaction 😭❤️
Love your reaction on Not Okay it's so mine everytime i listen to it :D
girl, you are so gorgeous, i cant stop staring at your eyes
Thank you 💕💕 so kind ☀️
The percussions on Faceshopping is euphoric
i love your vibes
react to her prior project called PRODUCT you'll absolutely love it
Loved this reaction!! SOPHIE made a non-stop remix version of this album and i think you'd enjoy that project as well!
I really love your reactions, and points of view
is it cold in the water? is stunning
a lot of songs from this give me bjork vibes, but very slightly. sad we never will get her next album as she intended.
Feeling like that during Pretending is definitely normal lol. It feels more like I'm ascending to heaven or something for me lol. Very otherworldly.
If you enjoy this album you should check out "Hi this is Flume" by Flume, it is an album with a visualizer. Sophie had helped with the sound design on some of the tracks. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on it!!!
"is it cold in the water" is apart of the album I suggested!!
OMG I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR OME OF THESE
