There's no wrong interpretation, but your interpretation of it changes as you listen to it at different ages. Remember to come back to it in future and have another go at interpreting it. It is definitely worthy of doing so.
When Paul Simon wrote it in the 1960s televisions were on display in shop fronts playing without any sound, and TV was on a meteoric rise in popularity with countless shallow vacuous variety shows, so this song was a kind of foreboding ominous warning. By the time David Draiman sings it screens have already totally taken over our lives in their many forms becoming a symbol of our disconnected communication, and he expresses the rage that we never heeded that initial warning.

Agree with every word you just said.
In a very melodic and clever poetic way, Simon and Garfunkel were whining about the abyss created by the technological environment that was lulling us to sleep, an outgrowth of the 1950's promise to "engineer a better world". A sullen objection to the Christian, engineered, society of the period, that they felt suppressed deep philosophical interaction.
Disturbed saw that they could capture the "vibe" of the movie "Sin City" (a band member "looks like" one of the Sin City actors), which had a message in some ways related to the original meaning of the S&G song, "Sound of Silence". In operatic fashion, David Draiman, comfortable with "technology", musically SCREAMS his challenge to the abyss, placing the blame not on technology, but on people not caring about others. This is woven together with the video, of their studio version.

Actually, guys, from what I’ve read, Paul Simon, who was in his early 20’s when he wrote the song, said the meaning of the song is very simple… he was expressing his and his generation’s frustration that no one in the older generations were listening to them.

When this song was written there was no cell phones, no internet the year was 1964 The Sound of Silence was originally released by Simon & Garfunkel's. The song, like the LP, wallowed in obscurity until it was rereleased with changes in January of 1966, when it reached No. 30 on the Billboard charts

To me, the song is about the inability to communicate. We speak at each other, the other person doesn’t really listen, but just wants to talk back. The exchange of ideas and thoughts really doesn’t happen, hence the sound of silence. Silence being the lack of real communication and the sound being the meaningless words.
As others pointed out in other threads, the original was a warning to the future and this version is the result of not listening to the warning.

The sound of silence is what we hear when we are not communicating.
This was written before social media but alludes to our times (or warns). Instead of communicating we are praying to our neon gods (technology). The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls does allude to graffiti (in my opinion) as it can be seen as the downtrodden crying out. Unfortunately, most of what we hear is that sound of silence.
That's how I heard the lyrics when Simon and Garfunkel recorded this. David (lead singer for Disturbed) takes an amazing but soothing song and transforms it into something that truly expresses what the lyrics are crying about (IMHO).

The song us about our failure to communicate with each other. Technology has taken over our lives. The video uses the analogy of musicians with instruments and people on the other side with the sheet music. They need to come together in the end for music (communication) to happen.

Very profound comments about feeling and hearing pain that nobody else can. I’m significantly older than you and I’ve heard this song so many times from the original artist and everybody since them. You’re the first person who brought up the idea of hidden pain or the idea of something like that. Bravo.

Pain, isolation, depression I think technology has increased the impact of these things on people of today.

Great cover reaction. To me Simon and Garfunkel the original writers and performers were telling us back in the 60’s when I first heard the song to get our shit together or the future won’t be pretty and David’s version is saying oh well the shit has now hit the fan!!!!! Just saying. So says Austin Tx!!!! 😍😍😍🍸😎

Interestingly enough, if you go back to Simon & Garfunkle's origional vesion was much more upbeat. Disturbed really leaned into the depression of the lyrics. Which I PERSONALLY, think makes it really better. My interpretation was of a people who had been silenced by some overlording force, like a military regime or something. and as they find the pages & musical instruments scattered, I was reminded of places like North Korea, Nazi Germany, and even Japan at one time I think. All of which at one time during rebellions or the rise of tyrants, such musical lyrics, instruments and other things that give hope to a defeated people, are usually banned, burned & destroyed. I particularly get that feeling when they start picking up the sheets of music. You get a quick flashback to it being written. Then here it is, scattered among the sands. Whatever you believe. It's powerful stuff.

I had to check out the comments and see everyone "telling you" what the song was about, pretty good comments actually, compared to some comment sections on this song with people arguing ad nauseam..lol.
I saw an article last year, posted online of a mid 90s, Rolling Stone interview with Paul Simon, the writer of this song, and they asked him about his inspiration and if he knew that his lyrics would sort of tell of a future of disconnected people. He goes, honestly... well I was 20 and just moved out on my onw, and had apt. with a bunch of roommates, and I used to go into the downstairs bathroom to get away from all the commotion, lock the door, turn on the water, turn out the lights and practice my guitar. One particular evening doing that, I sat on the edge of the tub, started strumming and said, "hello darkness my old friend" and within about 15 minutes I had the melody, and wrote the lyrics later that night or next day. He said besides the opening line being factual, the rest I thought was some really deep shit that sounded cool and was nothing more than teenage angst and hoping it impressed the girls. He ended stating, I'm glad that so many people to this day, take different meaning from the song, and can shape it to be meaningful to their lives in whatever capacity they want, I feel like that's the gift of that song to future generations. I don't know if he was embellishing to Rolling Stone cause he didn't want to tell the real meaning, but I thought it was a pretty solid explanation.

When Simon & Garfunkel wrote this song, it was about the Veterans experiences after the war was over & how it affected them. Examples: "Because a vision softly creeping, left it's seeds while I was sleeping...." "In restless dreams I walk alone, narrow streets of cobblestone." And the words go on to tell you what he saw in his dreams. Now Disturbs version may mean something different. If you watch Disturbs video, I look at their meaning as no communication between the musicians and the music composers. They are separated & must find away to reach each other so the people who are talking without speaking & the people hearing without listening can come together & combine the musicians with the composers which will create sound so it's not silent anymore. At the end of the video you see the musicians on one side of the river & the composers on the other side. Finally the musicians uses a boat to get to the other side to join the composers.

The lyrical contetnt is also fitting representative of the trauma that David Draiman experienced from finding his girlfriend, after she committed suicide. I bet that's real pain he's exuding, which makes it even more effective at conducting emotion. The lyrical content is masterful and poetic storytelling. Good video. I enjoyed your reactions.

This song was written in the 60s after Kennedy was assassinated. It’s about the inability to communicate. The light that he talks about is referring to the tv and how corrupt it is making people. The lyrics to this song is amazing a true artist wrote this, though this version of it shows it’s true meaning in my opinion. You can feel it. You should watch the live version on Conan in 2016. On the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls part , to me relate to the wisdom on the street being unfiltered, pure, real, unromanticized, & angry unlike the 'wisdom' of the upper crust of society that tends to drive that anger and devolves into more of a utopian than reality based understanding. It's like if you are in the Military and you want to find out what is going on you listen to the foot soldiers, not the Officers if you know what I mean.

The original version of this song was written by Simon & Garfunkel and was released in 1964, well before mobile (cell) phones were invented, but I think the lyrics have much more meaning and poignancy today. People text instead of talking, the art of conversation will become lost. I grew up listening to S&Gs version and always loved it, but I have to say I love this one even more. David Draiman’s voice gives me chills, and (just my opinion) he is wasting his talent singing heavy metal

To me when he says, "the words of the profits are written on the subway walls, tenement halls" he is talking about graffiti, but more, it is the angst of the new generation, fears, hopelessness, as well as hopes and dreams, that will need a reconing as this generation matures. They are profits because they are telling you what matters to them, and what will have to be dealt with in the coming years.

Paul Simon of Simon & Garfunkel created this song in 1963/4 due to President Kennedy's assissination and the Civil Rights Movement getting more violent and probably a few more negative things going on at that time around the world.
The band if you do not know is a Heavy Metal Band. The singer David Draiman met Paul and Paul was so impressed by their cover he said he was going to put a link in his Social Media pages and suggest his folliwers go and listen to it. A standing ovation to the Band from Paul. It now has something like 770+million views!
It is as you say a problem of communication but also much more, and there was no Social Media back in 1963, and I don't think the Vietnam war had started then, I think that was a few years later, but I could be wrong with the start year.
When S&G first put it out it was/is a "pretty" song with lovely harmonies but I think Disturbed have nailed it with their rendition. This is not a "pretty" song the lyrics are not pretty, it is a song with dark undertones but all the time keeping that beautiful melody that Paul wrote and I personally think Disturbed did a wonderful recreation of the song.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams, I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light, I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
    And no one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
Then the sign said, "The words on the prophets are written on the subway walls
    In tenement halls"
And whispered in the sound of silence

But, while Simon & Garfunkel's original was iconic for the 60's, even the 80's, when the menace of complete emmotional disconnection was still slighty distant, I DO feel that the Disturbed's version is iconic to TODAY, when we've become more disconnected than ever before... Dude... just watch the video they made and you will understand the song. Disturbed managed to create a visual about that song, to explain it's meaning written by Simon & Garfunkel decades ago. It's about the seperation between people. The one who has to say something and want to spread word, but doesn't talk and the people who talks all day, but never listen. Metaphorical displayed as songwriters who doesn't share their songs, and the musicians that doesn't care. And David managed to raise his anger during the song about this situation, because neither of both sides tries to disturb the silence. So at the end, he set sail to cross that river that seperates them, bringing those musicians across to the songwriters, so they can share their songs, which at last will be listened and performed by the musicians to close the circle. - Just review the video, while listening, it explains itself pretty good. Don't believe it has anything to do with cell phones or social media, cuz the song is from 1964. ;-)

    My take on this song.
Language was formed to convey a message, so words should carry a meaning when spoken or heard.
In today's world people no longer care about the message they convey out of fear of how others might take it.
So people chose to talk, however the words convey nothing, words with no message are the same as silence.
Today people will listen to you speak but they wont care what you say, they hear what ever they want to hear. (You can see this a lot when a woman is mad at you.)
In today's world it is to troublesome to convey your message, when others talk to you they say nothing of substance if anything at all, so why bother?

I'm a Christian and my own interpretation is that man is blind in his sin and lives in lonely darkness until he is saved by the light of the world, the Lord Jesus Christ. All music is from above and there is plenty of singing in heaven! lol. I see the neon god they worshipped as all the glam and glitter of this world, technology etc, that distracts man from having faith in the one and only true God, but don't feel there is no hope. The Lord is waiting for YOU! If you feel convicted of the sin that separates you from your creator, with a sincere heart fall on your knees and ask him to save you because he promises he will! He has paid the debt for your sin on the cross where he died, but hallelujah on the third day he conquered death and arose from the grave. At this very moment he is alive and sitting on the right hand of the father who has designated HIM to be our King, to rule us in the Kingdom he will eventually make on earth. I could also draw a comparison to the gulf that separates him from the people on the other side as sinful man on one side and our Lord on the other beckoning us to join him but sinful man is deaf. This man's voice is incredible and it is a special gift from God. He shares it with us and how thankful I am for that! God bless to all and nothing but love.

You need to listen to the original song by Simon and Garfunkel that was done in the 60s it was a foreshadowing like a warning of things to come. Disturb's version is "you didn't listen" so it's a "now we are angry." Apply it to how things are today.

So while you’re right about the being in the phone it’s more than that, this song was written before cellphones. It’s talking about people just keeping their heads down and carrying on with life but not seeing or hearing the pain and struggle around them.

Gnome Sane is correct that there isn't a wrong interpretation to this song, and I agree with their analysis of the songs. I would add that it might help to listen to the original by S&G, listen to Disturbed's Ten Thousand Fists Album, and then relisten to this song. And I say listen to Ten Thousand Fists because, if I remember correctly, David wanted to do this song in 2005 but didn't feel he would do the S&G version justice. So I see the S&G version as an prologue to that album while this is an epilogue.

Kayla! Stop your boyfriend immediately! The level of pausing and commenting without any accuracy is maddening, your channel will NOT grow if you continue to let him pause and comment, pause and comment! AND, he's pausing at every SINGLE, important part of the song, NOBODY is here for that. STOP HIM KAYLA!!

analyzing the lyrics is completely missing the point. The song was written over 50 years ago and has been covered zillions of times and the lyrics have been analyzed to death. The reason this has so many more views than any other version isn’t because of the lyrics, which haven’t changed…..it’s the PERFORMANCE! The live version on Conan is his most popular video ever with over 130m views! This is one of the great singing performances you will ever hear and you’re completely missing it by trying to analyze the lyrics. You’d NEVER have hundreds of millions of people reading the lyrics, which you can do. It’s the music and the vocal performance is so unique and powerful
