Basically why teams didn’t want to sign Carlos
Red Bull: wants to keep 1-2 dynamic at team
Mercedes: wants to put an overhyped kid with “Kimi” in their name into their car
Ferrari: short term gains with Lewis
McLaren: kept their lineup as is (no change necessary)
    Aston Martin: Lance’s “rolling deal”

First off - Carlos probably should have stayed at McLaren, but i understand the lure of Ferrari.
Mercedes: Toto rates Carlos very highly, but has also stated that he doesn't really want him in the long term and he would just be a stop-gap for Antonelli.
Red Bull: Checo's sponsorship is definitely part of it, no other reason for Red Bull to retain someone who so drastically under-performs compared to what that car is clearly capable of. And, - as you said - this is ironically the problem facing Carlos. Max likes his team mate in his rear-vision mirror and has stated as much that he likes to win with a buffer (racking up the wins, accolades and championships). Max is no doubt a supreme driver (I'm not sure I buy the generational talent thing), but he fears a competitive/quick driver in the same car - the records would be harder for him to attain and may possibly take the shine off his recent championships.
    Alpine: Hopeless
    Hass: Not doing enough.
Sauber/Audi: Not going to bring wins any time soon.
Williams: Is the most likely destination. A team who keeps promising performance and perhaps has made some gains in recent years, but so have all the top teams. I think they are offering 4 years with a 2 year performance exit clause. But where would he go then?
Just when Carlos probably felt like he was locked into a top team, he has been shown the door. He's probably feeling rejected and at a bit of a crossroads in his career right now. The problem is that Charles is quicker and will always be quicker (even though Carlos has gotten the better of him a few times).
It's a shame that money and the fragility of certain drivers dictates things like this rather pure talent and raw speed.

I really don't see Audi beating Ferrari, Mercedes or McLaren in 2026, even with the new regs. Remember, Mercedes took over the championship winning Brawn GP in 2010 and it took them 4 years to win. In 2012, 2 years before the regs changed in 2014 and Mercedes became the dominant car, Mercedes had Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg. They won one race in 2012, and had 3 podiums. In 2013, BEFORE 2014 when they "got the regs right", Mercedes finished 2nd in the championship, had Louis and Nico driving for them, had 3 victories and 9 podiums. Where is Sauber today? Oh yeah, dead last. Mercedes were rapidly advancing before they got the regs right. Sauber? Not so much. I think people just don't understand how far behind Sauber are compared to the top teams. Yes, Audi has $$$ and talent, but success will not come in a couple of years. It would a great F1 story if it does though! I like the Williams option for some reasons, I like the Merc 1-season option for some reasons, and I like the long-term Audi option for some reasons, but I also think he's holding a stronger hand than it seems. I get that F1 is still the pinnacle, but other options outside of F1, like WEC, are likely being considered. I think he wants to go to a winner, or at least a team that he feels confident will become one within a couple of years. Other sports could provide the money, less exposure, but a winning environment that he might not get with a long term deal outside of the top teams

And the way he is being picky or playing hard to get... Audi offered a seat. Williams is all over him. And he is indecisive. They should all dump him and be done with it.

Audi is still going to be I think 3 years out from being competitive, look at Mclaren, it took them 2 seasons to get back to the top and they have been in F1 all along. Not to mention Mercedes, going from winning the WDC and Constructors for years to fighting for 5th place or sometimes out of the points all together. I wouldn't count Carlos out even at Williams, he has been best of the rest on many of the teams in his early career, I remember him finishing in the points at almost every race with Mclaren.

"Red Bull have taken away the most competitive seat available to Carlos" ... are you sure about this? You're forgetting the elephants in the room, Mercedes and Verstappen. Sainz was never in negotiations with Red Bull to shine Max's shoes for the foreseeable future. We know, Mercedes and Verstappen are in talks and it would be utterly negligent from Red Bull not to be preparing for a worst case scenario and it is Max's seat Carlos is REALLY after... of course, neither side will admit this in public but nothing else makes sense... Perez's seat is probably the least competitive seat in all of F1, with Verstappen in the team.
And Mercedes was never in the cards for Sainz. Wollf wants Verstappen, failing that, there will be a big reset with Antonelli as "the future of Mercedes" (which is bad news for Russell). A gamble? Certainly, but one that Wollff seems willing to take. He wasn't working feverishly to get the kid into Formula 1 ASAP only to help Williams out of their "Sargent misery".

  • @cptarianus824

    He should take Williams.
I'm sorry. I know how hyped about Audi everyone is, but take a look. In 1.5 years, Audi will need staff, facilities, an engine, and a car. They have just a little of those, and in past months, they did not move from almost nothing they had for the 2026 car forward. Plus, there is the situation in VW Group and the exchange in Audi management, where the new guys are colder with their engagement in F1 than the last bunch.
As you said, Williams is moving forward. Audi is a Russian roulette with five bullets in a cylinder.

It took RBR 4 years before their first Grand Prix win. And another year to win the driver's & constructor's title. And this is with Adrian Newey on their side. Honda decided to re-enter F1 with McLaren in 2015. And it took the engine supplier FOUR years for its first win in 2019. So if Sainz joins Audi, he will have to accept a 4 to 5 years of winless driving near the back of the field. If Mercedes engine is indeed going to be the strongest engine come 2026, Sainz going to Williams may be a better choice. Sainz going to Redbull may not be a sure-win as well given Redbull Engine with Ford being their first foray into engines especially when Adrian Newey has left.

  • @LennardA320

The Ferrari line-up is one of the best on the Grid. 2 young talented drivers and 1 get swapped with an old driver that isn't in his last years, and how fast is he? Does ferrari want an intern fight between Lewis en Charles where Charles is now their nummer 1 and want to win a championship with Lewis because that is wat they want. A 7-time world champion winst his last one with Ferrari after staying dry for 2 decades.
Carlos should be joining Red Bull again and it would be a strong duo with Max but Max is already better and holding Perez to please Max with his bad performance in this close field with only a couple of tens between coureurs. And that nobody can fight for wins within redbull from Max. They gonna lose the constructeurs championship with Perez getting a few points in a handful of races. What happens is very sad for Carlos. I am for Max because I am Dutch but I don't think he is the king and his dad causing problems in the team if they want a better 2nd driver that maybe is a little bit faster and can sometime challenge Max.
Wouldn't that be not more spectacle 2 excellent drivers in 1 team batting. With 2 good drivers you have 2 people that gives good technical feedback with now only 50% with Max? Without Max they would end 5th at constructeurs. Last year RB would win the constructeurs already with only his points so we gonna see how bad it will become before Red Bull loses it and go for Carlos. Daniel won't join red bull. Maybe it cost 1 year but after another bad year of Perez and sadly that he performs that bad because he is a good driver what I always have seen with Force I dia an racing point. He is now only scared to do things wrong and then things go wrong.

Sainz's own hubris will lead to his downfall - he used the interest Audi had in him to gain leverage on Ferrari when it came time to negotiate a new contract. Not only it failed, but Ferrari told him 'Bye, have a great time' and signed Hamilton. He then used the same Audi interest to see if Red Bull or Mercedes takes a punt at him. Well, Red Bull choose continuity over change and retained Perez, while Mercedes is increasingly looking to roll the dice with Kimi Antonelli. Audi will not be the next Brawn GP, not by a long shot and if the meddling from upper management is an issue as time goes on, Audi will look more like Honda or Toyota in the 2000's or Alpine nowadays.
Also, Audi has set target by 2027-28 to be really competitive. By that time lot of drivers will be free agents - Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, George Russell and Alex Albon to name a few. All are much younger than Sainz, who by 2028 will be 34 years old. Audi should just give up on this 'unrequited love' for Sainz and hire a driver that will lay the groundwork alongside Nico Hülkenberg and is not afraid to be at the back. Sauber already has that in Bottas, but now that relationship has gone cold to the point that he's considering either a Williams homecoming, a potential Alpine seat, or switch to Haas and mentor Ollie Bearman.

I think Williams should contract Carlos but lend him out to Merc for 2025 - he gathers engine knowledge closer to the source and Williams pay for that by blooding Antonelli for Toto… and keeping at least half of team Brackley dependable. I mean George and a rookie, mama mia. 😅
But I’m still holding my breath for Red Bull collapsing in on itself and Max going to Merc with immediate effect. Cut to Toto-garage-chair-face. 😂 Srsly tho… Red Bull just proved that they don’t give a damn about results as long as they have Carlos Slim’s chequebook and a guy who sells more hats and cans of wing juice than Verstappen; imo because it’s almost impossible for drivers from Latin America - or the Americas period - to get to F1, or at least disproportionately so, proved by the fact that the guy in the fastest car has this ridiculous portfolio and a close PERSONAL relationship with the 11th richest human being on the planet. It’s a sad indictment of the lack of diversity (or racism, whatever you prefer) of this sport that Checo is the best Latin American in F1 since Juan Pablo Montoya. Even with a quarter of the drivers being ethnic minorities (more if you count Jewish I guess) it is somehow still the whitest sport in the universe. 😂 I say all that to say that the only race winner from the Western Hemisphere is quite likely to bring some attention in a part of the world that loves its motorsport but is consistently locked out.
My rather harsh conclusion: Red Bull have taken one of the greatest drivers to ever ring the neck of sub-standard cars and turned him into a glorified mascot… to do what, exactly… win a bidding war against Toto over Verstappen? Not surprised Newey legged it.
