I knew Marty started young, but to be playing with Lester Flatt at 14 is just insane. Marty is still making great music and every time I see him I appreciate that he is a link to some of the true legends of country music.
I saw Marty play the mandolin and sing not long ago and he could still bring a crowd to their feet. He is one of the most skilled and talented country music artists of all time. And a finer man you will never meet.
I had no idea Marty Stewart could throw down at this young age . My gosh no wonder he is so wonderful 😍 I knew Marty was extremely talented but my goodness not at this age ..Wonderful Marty I have always loved you and you are just know words to describe how great you really are . To throw down that great at 14 I just can't get over how amazing Marty really is .♥️♥️
Lester Flatt is one of the all-time greatest singers from any genre of music. Nobody but nobody could sing a story like Lester. He could have the entire audience hanging on his every word! Incredible!
I was extremely proud to have had Charlie Nixon and his lovely wife stay in my motel in the north Georgia mountains a few years ago. My mother had a Dobro that she played as a young girl. I ask Charlie if he would play it for us, and he gladly spend 3 hours in our living room, playing some of the best sounds I had ever heard, what a treasure trove of memories. I hope he is still around today, and wish I could here him play once more. Thanks for those treasured hours.
I worked in downtown Nashville for many years. One day on my lunch break, I walked into a flower shop to buy some roses, and there was Marty Stuart doing the same thing. He was so handsome! I just stopped and gawked at him. He just smiled. 😊

Marty even had the "hair" as a kid. Without a doubt incredibly talented, who would have known at the time that he would have went on to become a Country Music super star.
He was destined for greatness! Him and Kenny fit like a glove! Man that Lettermen show performance a few years back, they knocked a hole in the roof that night! Next Level stuff!
I was friends with Porter and he helped me on one of my songs I had written. I also knew Marty . Marty called the funeral home is Soddy Daisy Tn when my Dad passed away in 2012. Marty married Connie Smith. She was country music's best female singer and still is.
Marty joined Lester's group at the invitational of Roland White (brother of guitarist Clarence White). Roland was Lester's mandolin player and Marty took over full-time after Roland left to work with Clarence. That's how Marty got to know Clarence and how he was able to purchase that famous B-bender. It was Clarence's widow who sold it for $1,600 (along with some other items). Marty was willing to pay whatever (even if he had to go to his mother, who worked at a bank, to get a loan), but Clarence's widow said that she knew Marty would respect and care for the guitar, and considering Marty still uses it today, she was spot on.
Absolutely great footage. Marty was a real pro at 14 that's just incredible. One thing is absolute, nobody and I mean nobody has ever looked cooler in a cowboy hat than Lester Flatt did.
How the years have flown by. Earlier this evening I was watching Marty sing Paradise with John Prine a year or so back. All grey now but still a good picker.
I saw Lester and the boys in concert at Morehead State University in Kentucky way back in 1973. Marty had recently joined the group. Bluegrass music was big on college campuses then. Great show!!
It says a lot about Marty's talent that he was a mere lad, so young he sounds like a little boy, so pretty he could have passed for a girl (but for the silly haircut), but these seasoned pros invited him to play with their band, and he kept right up with them. He was remarkable even then. And he just kept on evolving into an even greater musician. Love his later songwriting, too.
Used to just see Marty talking about other country stars in whatever documentary, didn't realise he was a hot shot musician also a right good guy to boot.
Oh my goodness, Marty was adorable and talented at such a young age!! I've loved him since the 90s and only knew a small bit of his history, what a great video!!

My lord, Marty Stuart's life. If you don't know (like I didn't know) find Ken Burn's new documentary of country music. Marty Stuart is a giant, who had three goals in life and achieved them all.
Thank goodness that Marty's parents were willing to let him go off at such a young age to work with Lester Flats. Many parents would have said "NO way...Marty has school tomorrow!" They did a great & considerate thing for country music when they allowed Marty to play his music. And you were correct...amazing documentary by Ken Burns
When I was a kid, I didn't give (adult) Marty Stuart a chance. I saw the hair and the outfits and he just didn't seem "authentic country." Imagine my embarrassment when I learned his backstory. He has some of the best country/bluegrass bona fides it's possible to have.

Great comment here! A year prior to this Marty stood on the Ryman stage with Lester and his band for his first official concert he performed on.
He is a true legend of country in my opinion

I could not agree more
I love Marty in the Blue birds. He must screw up near the end. Lester give him the evil eye. Great video!
I want to go live in a time where good country shows like this were on television. I belong there.
I did grow up when these shows were broadcasted. Awesome time with amazing artists!
I did grow up in those times. Unfortunately, I hated Porter Wagoner. Oh woe is me for what I missed, including the young Dolly Parton.
Me too brother.....
It comes on RFD-TV. On Sunday morning I know for sure. I have Dish and I know it is on Direct also. Not sure about others .
I think that exact same thing all the time.
Lester Flatt keeps cracking up Marty Stuart. Priceless !
I always tried to figure out what exactly it was that got him so ticked
What a Lively footage! Lester is a giant but Marty is surely à rising star in here!
For Marty to have had such talent and stage presence at such a young age is amazing.
There is no music that is better than authentic mountain bluegrass!
How the hell did Lester stay so cool, calm and collected on stage all the time? The man was one cool song machine!

You had Marty with Lester, Young Ricky Skaggs along with Keith Whitley playing with Ralph Stanley. What a time to be festival going.

He is dead
14 yo playing in the band of one of the greatest legends, makes my head want to explode, also shows what a humble person Lester Flatt must have been.
He also was sewing seeds for the future.
Ricky Skaggs appeared with Lester Flatt onstage when he was 7 years old. There's a B & W video on UA-cam of that performance.
That 14 year old was Marty Stewart, and at that age he could play as well as anyone alongside any grown man.

Hello Linda 👋 how are you ??
I saw Marty and the Superlatives about ten years ago at The Little Bear in CO. One of the best concerts I’ve ever seen.
I used to see great local bands there, you are so lucky!
Marty is born to do what GOD wanted him to do. He is a very important Role in Country Music.

Just cherish them forever, I totally understand what the old people meant about time going fast and not being able to keep up.
"The more you grow old the more you go back"
That's ridiculously cheesy until you age up and the profundity smacks you like a truck!
Ain't it the truth !
Marty encapsulates Country Music. He's connected to the Carters, Cash, and beyond.
Marty even had the "hair" as a kid. Without a doubt incredibly talented, who would have known at the time that he would have went on to become a Country Music super star.

Marty Stuart is to the preservation of country/rockabilly/hillbilly swing as Wynton Marsalis is to Jazz/Dixieland/Blues. Both national treasures.
I just can't stop listening to this wonderful song.
Lester Flatt, turned me on to bluegrass as a small boy in the 60's. He will always be my favorite.
WOW Marty Stewart was only 14 years old on that video.Terrific mandolinist.

Wow, I did not know much about Marty. He really paid his dues. I did watch his show back in the day. I was really entertained.
Young Marty was a confident musician even then, and what a career he has had, great to see this video!
