Having a bolt hit his foot next to a giant lightning rod only for a second one to fuckin bounce around a tree through his window is some looney tunes shit
That's really sad to me that he killed himself like 6 or 7 years after the last lightning strike, to think he was struggling with worse things in life than being struck by lightning 7 times, idk just feels bad man
Don't quote me on this because i just heard it in the passing of some other video but: i heard the lightning was part of the reason for his depression since people both started avoiding him and he also started isolating himself. Admittedly if i were in so many near death situations i too would be a little depressed about it but hey, cant confirm i think.
@@luluconacolo2729Considering he was already so paranoid after the fourth strike I wouldn't be surprised. You'd probably believe you were just not meant to live after so many incidents.
Honestly, I imagine he would have been in much better mental health without the lightning. Even if there was more going on to influence his decision, the lightning was definitely a very key factor. By the end of it, he must have been absolutely terrified every day, not to mention absolutely physically and neurologically battered. Even if there was nothing else going on in his life, his decision to end it all seems totally reasonable in light of the life he lived and the physical and emotional pain it must have inflicted upon him.
There is actually a link between being struck by lighting and increased mental health issues. Apparently there is a case where a guy got depression from being struck by lighting
You maybe avoided finishing the "Take me home, country roads" skit but right after it you listed every place mentioned in the lyrics of the song. Bravo.
My grandma got shot by lightning (and survived). It was a very traumatic experience to her, and I remember my dad and his siblings being worried about her whenever there was a thunderstorm, because they knew that the sounds would trigger her. I can't imagine what it must've been like for this guy, not having to go throught that once, but SEVEN times!
It's weird because I do know someone who was struck by lightning twice. Both times were as a camp counselor at a summer camp I went to, and both happened exactly one year apart. He showed all of us the scars he had from the first one and a picture of how it burned a hole in his water bottle. That night, there was a storm and sure enough we heard from the other camp counselors the next day that he was struck by lightning AGAIN and was in the hospital. He was out and back at camp a few days later with a new scar and a new nickname of "sparky".
the moment the bear is mentioned I started wheezing. What even are the odds of encountering a bear?? (really don't know I don't live in the states) And only a man who's been struck by lightning 7 times could be mad enough to fight a bear. Over fishes.
West Virginia has about 13,000 - 15,000 black bears current day. While running into them certainly isn't a daily occurrence, it absolutely does happen. Being in the forest near a stream would certainly increase those odds. I've been within 100 yards of a wild black bear on two separate occasions in my life -- once near a stream and once on my grandparents property.
@@Nightenstaffyeah I camped in Shenandoah once and saw three bears over the course of like 2 1/2 days. While obviously any bear is a wild animal and shouldn’t be messed with, black bears are relatively chill and I’m not surprised he could just chase them off with a stick lol. Actually they’re probably more dangerous in modern times given that humans have so thoroughly encroached on their habitat, and given that they’re largely opportunistic scavengers they’re often found getting into people’s trash in way closer proximity to humans than they would have fifty odd years ago.
@@gguioa Just about. Not only were two struck by lightning, another was killed recently by the topic of a different @jeffiot video. (That I won't mention out here of respect for how recent it was). There might be a Jeff Iot curse....
I though he was going to tell me he was almost done editing this video, he needed a high definition photograph of roy sullivan and when he clicked on it, right there, sitting at his editing desk, he was struck by lightning. Zeus strikes again!
I love that it was creepy horror stuff that brought me to this channel, but I am well and truly staying for the humor :D this was seriously on point, great video!
man I can't even begin to describe how much I love this channel. your storytelling style is so illustrative and entertaining. I can't imagine something more comforting than relaxing to a nice jeff video.
There's another guy named Walter Summerford who was struck by lightning 4 times, then buried alive! I wonder if he was related to Roy... Keep up the amazing work, Jeff. It's an absolute crime your channel isn't more popular
Lightning strike injuries often include Lichtenberg figures, which look like ferns and ar caused by exploding capillaries. Amd compared to other burns, lightning strike burns are notable. The lungs can also be damaged due to rapidly expanding air from the heat. All this to say, he'd be hard pressed to fake lightning strikes. Given how much bears bothered him, I gotta wonder wtf he did to piss off two Greek deities, tho, because damn.
I love that you said you don't even know if the song is about West Virginia (it is) and then proceeded to mention places straight out of the first 3 lines of song's lyrics (blue ridge mountain, Shenandoah river) XD
My neighbor was nearly struck by lightening twice, once back in the 1930s or early 40s (I forget exactly what age he said he was) and then again in the 2010s. First time it happened next to him in a field, second time it struck the room he was in. But to be as cursed as Roy, goddamn.
Fyi, the band I Hate Myself did a 3 song EP (just titled 3 Songs) dedicated to Roy Sullivan. Each song is about him and lightning. It's not for everyone, but I highly recommend checking it out.
It's so funny that you mention the video game flame searcher because at least in the US it's literally called fire watch, so your reference to a fire watch tower is even funnier
There's also an interactive dialogue sequence during the first time Henry walks through Thunder Canyon back to his firewatch tower. If you choose the correct path through the dialogue tree with Delilah, she will tell the Roy Sullyvan story, even with the sad and ironic twist about how Roy took his own life.
i saw your vid about final destination, and since then i’ve been on a BINGE, your content is so freaking good, im too broke for patreon so i hope this comment can help you in any way
I thought i went through and watched all your videos after night mind sent me your way months ago. I did not lol, but I've been watching them all as I work. I love your editing and the quality of your videos!
In 1979 or so my two cousins, my brother, and I were making a tape and improvising an episode of “Dallas.” My cousin Melissa, as Bobby, said “Well, lightning never strikes twice in the same place,” and I, a nine year old girl, as JR, shot back “Did to some ranger in the forest,” which cracked her up. And now I know the rest of the story that I think we saw in Ripley’s Believe It or Not.
How do you describe what a visible flash of electricity is doing? It would sound weird to say lightning shot out of is head and joined with the clouds, but I think more accurate. Universe is weird. You are brilliant and very funny!
I don't know the temperature of this take but hear me: What if Roy used the space he supervised as a ranger to build a super powerful machine and working on it got him electrocuted? 🤷♂️ Edit: I'm binging your videos atm, hi from Germany
My friend's dad works construction, and he was struck by lightning while out on a job. Whats really interesting was after the strike (i think it hit him on the head) he developed severe OCD and anxiety. It makes sense in a way since he basiclaly got his brain fried with as much power as he could survive. After beign struck by ligtning 7 times, Roy probably had brain damage which would defintely be a factor in his suicide.
Dude.. every video you put out makes me feel like I’ve been in a really weird room, all by myself doin all my weird shit and suddenly I look up and you’re over there in the corner doin similar weird shit and when we make eye contact, you’re just like “nice!” Is that too much? Should I not have said that?
somewhere around 80% of lightning strikes are from lightning striking nearby objects and bouncing to the person. probably the first time, lightning struck the tower again and arced to him rather than striking him directly
It's sad how these traumatics experiences and together with the fact that people started avoiding him with fears of being hit by a lightning made (probably) him kill himself )':
Your my favorite UA-camr and person I look up to love your videos and loved "The Mustache" video so much I got the book keep on going would love to meet you one day
in the german part i'm in, it has been storming more than usually (due to climate change). i'm positive the world record can be changed from this year moving on.
I'm definitely on the a bit skeptical group, but damn if even half of those strikes are true this man must have been cursed by a warlock and hunted down by Zeus himself.
Jokes on you, funny video man, I DID say Faraday Cage! Because I had a boy crush on Tesla when I was a teen, and learned a handful of lightning related trivia!
how on earth am i this early? anyway always excited to see more from you! edited to add: of all the things i could have guessed, it never would have been "a fucking bear". holy shit.
This makes me wonder if it is possible to be genetically more likely to be hit by lightning. Like maybe they have a higher count of some base mineral in their body that is more likely to attract electricity?
I had a full and reciprocal argument with a video about whether I did or didn't say 'Faraday Cage' (For the record, I DID, I just had a mouthful of toast so it was a little bit muffled, OKAY?)

Strike me twice, shame on you
Strike me, fucking, 3~7 times, *okay what the fuck did i do to you???*
The bear looked at Roy and said "I don't know what boss music is, but I am *certain* that I am hearing it."

choosing to abandon the take me home country roads joke and, not one minute later, talking about blue ridge mountains and shenandoah
Roy's Lichtenberg scars must have looked absolutely badass.
What a legend.
after the second one I'd just nope and never go outdoors, to think after 6 he was willing to be under the sky is insanity

Simply a matter of time, for a new channel like this he is booming
@jeffiot I'm on a binge and turned all my friends onto your shit. never stop you're almost there I love you
Seriously. You just showed up for me and the humor is A+
