    The Dodge Charger made its return to the market in 2006 after a 20-year absence, and with it, Dodge also created a police car of the iconic Charger. These were sold alongside the regular versions from 2006-2023, with three different generations of V6 and V8 models. Known by several names, like Enforcer, Pursuit, or simply Police, these were popular among officers and were used all across the US, Canada, Mexico, Middle East, and other jurisdictions. Charger enthusiasts were also able to snatch these up on the secondary market after the law enforcement agencies were done with them. As the Charger and Challenger L-body vehicles are getting discontinued after 2023, so too are the police versions, ending a legendary era. In this video, I talk about the history and specs of these cars, the cancellation, and the major issues they had as well. Watch along for a full history of the Pursuit from inception in 2006 to its cancellation in 2023!

    The Charger 5.7 pursuit is my favorite police car of all time, especially the third gen. I love the sound of the exhaust. I love how quick they are from a stop and during quicker accelerations. The 2015-2023 5.7 pursuit is the one that's able to keep up with most other vehicles during high speed pursuits on major highways and open country roads. I sometimes consider the Charger 5.7 pursuit the modern-day Polara 440 interceptor. The 2006-2023 Charger police car marked the return of Mopars ruling the highways with lights a sirens.
    I definitely knew the biggest issue with earlier pursuit models was the brake quality. Seeing you mentioned the Bridgeport, CT police use Charger pursuits, there was a major chase that happened at least 8 years ago. I was listening to it on an online scanner. Once the cops had the suspects in custody, I heard many telling dispatch that their Chargers needed to be towed due to worn out brakes. I got to talk with a Bridgeport cop who was involved in that pursuit and found out that the brakes were doing an excellent job at quickly slowing down the vehicle, but were wearing down quickly.

    2011 upgrade changed to a 6 speed transmission for all Chargers. They kept that through 2020 and cancelled the awd hemi for 21 because the 8 speed was the same trans in use on all other chargers and they didn’t want to have a special driveshaft and transfer case just for one model of police charger. The awd hemi hadn’t been available to the public since 2014 model year.

    Strange to think that the '23 Charger will possibly be the final American police "car". I'm very concerned for Dodge's future, if they loose out on the fleet/LE market by axing these models. Even if they bring out a next gen sedan, I'm worried that the Twin Turbo six may not have enough longevity to support the requirements of law enforcement agencies. I guess we'll see! I wish Dodge could just come out and start announcing their actual plans for the next few years. Announcing the end of your entire lineup and not a single replacement is just strange (well, aside from the Hornet).

      I think Dodge's future is bleak. They're listening to the moronic illegitimate government and putting everything into electric. Nobody with a brain wants an electric car. Limited range, time it takes to charge compared to fill up. When the battery is done, so is the car unless you have 18 - 25 grand for a new one.
      I don't know anyone who wants to have one. They must not have researched the numbers of who would even have one. We need to keep the illegitimate government out of our lives. They are so stupid that electric cars put out more of what they're trying to stop with the electric plants, and carbon is not a problem anyway. The pollution comes from the shit these chemical plants put out and the "geoengineering" they have been doing.

    I have a 2011 pursuit, and I had to get the motor rebuilt about 3 years after owning. It wasn't actually the cam but a spun beaing. Word to the wise, spend the extra money, and delete the MDS if you do anything past bolt ons, those lifters were made in a bomb factory.

    • @UnionThugg
      @UnionThugg 6 місяців тому +1

      MDS isn't the cause of the failures in the valvetrain. A spun bearing has only one cause: lack of lubrication. Check your oil on these things, every day.

    • @joshnoname7305
      @joshnoname7305 6 місяців тому +1

      @UnionThugg im not saying that a bearing on the bottom of the block effects the valvetrain. I spun a bearing and just did the cam as well, two separate things. The mds oil-filled lifters can fail due to poor lubrication as a factory design flaw. Richard holdner is the hemi Jesus, im but a deciple.

    • @UnionThugg
      @UnionThugg 6 місяців тому +1

      @joshnoname7305 the MDS thing is a myth. Plenty of non-MDS lifters have failed on cars and trucks alike. That tells me it's more of an issue with vendor parts quality or the overall design. Probably both.
      Every 3G hemi I've owned ate the cam, one if them twice. It's pretty telling that Chrysler's latest policy is to check for debris in the VVT solenoid, and to replace the entire engine if there is. I think that stems from the fact that they had been replacing cams and lifters without tearing down and hot-tanking and/or flushing the block and heads. Debris would remain in the engine (the filter can't catch it all), and then you'd get scored rod and/or main bearings, as you've experienced.
      Worst thing is, there's no valid cure.

    • @joshnoname7305
      @joshnoname7305 6 місяців тому

      @UnionThugg Aye, I'm just saying, personally, on mine, my mds lifters were more worn, and my cam lobes with those lifters were worse than the non mds lifters and lobes. IMO, the entire motor would have benefitted from a better oil pump and no mds at all. I actually get better mpg highway with mds disabled. The hemi tick is a mystery, and the lore just grows.

    • @UnionThugg
      @UnionThugg 6 місяців тому +2

      @joshnoname7305 I had a '17 AWD Pursuit model. I bought it just after the cam and lifters had been replaced at the dealer. I got 10,000 miles out of it when I lost another lifter. The dealer was willing to replace everything again, but that was enough for me. I sold it for a song, and that person wound up having to replace the engine. They had dropped the pan and checked rods and mains, and discovered they were scored from the debris.
      Yet we do hear about some of them going for a long time without any noise or trouble. So who knows. My experience with that engine was very poor, especially compared to a 3.6 model I had, and quite a few 318/360 LA powered Mopars.

      @@tonymorfin8750 -- I am still partial to the Ford Crown Victoria (old school), but that car went out of production nearly 13 years ago now. It's said to see the Charger Pursuit bite the dust because it was the last "police sedan" in the US market. Since GM quit offering the Chevrolet (Holden) Caprice PPV after 2017 and Ford axed the Taurus in 2019, the Charger was pretty much the only game in town.
      The Charger was a decent patrol car - decent acceleration with the V6 and wicked fast with the Magnum V8. It also had all-wheel-drive available; which was great for agencies in the snow belt. Chrysler engines built in the past several years have that ubiquitous oiling problem with the camshaft/lifters - exacerbated by the thousands of hours spent idling.
      For 2024, the Durango is likely to be the go-to option for law enforcement agencies who want a Dodge for routine patrol work. Ford will keep pumping out the Explorer and Chevrolet will soldier on with the big Tahoe. They each offer a pickup truck patrol vehicle as well.

    Soecial Order Paint - minimum was always 5 cars. Always, well back to the lare 60's.
    LD - Entire 2011 - 2023 run. Body designation did not change with 2015 updates.
    AWD was added in December of 2014 (mid '14 model year) BR9 brakes were optional from mid - '14, then made standard in 2015.
    12" screen was dropped after 2020.
    A580 trans was discontinued after 2020, models then Changed to V6-AWD and V8-RWD. V6 car used the Durango's 850RE, V8 car used the 8HP70. Electronic speed limiter was 140 for both cars, now field-adjustable (downward only).
    In 2019, they sold 21,000 Charger Pursuit models in the US. 2020 was a very short model year (2 months) for the Pursuit, and the new Durango Pursuit took the lead sales spot for the FCA/Stellantis Fleet roster. As production of the Charger Pursuit resumed, sales evened up a little bit more between the two vehicles. Production of the Charger Pursuit ceased in Sept of 2023.
    The switch to 8-spd transmissions did not affect performance.
    The 3G hemi valvetrain failures were NOT limited to the 2009+ eagle engines, nor to just the MDS engines. It was a design flaw that didnt allow for variations in component materials.
    Final Analysis: the Charger survived every other domestic police sedan. We can expect the new Dodge police sedan (as yet unnamed) to offer a variety of propulsion choices, including the Hurricane Six.

      @ThatChargerPursuitGuy 7 місяців тому +6

      @@MarspeedCarsA higher priority is durability. Namely that the vehicle can take and give a beating. Plus, the idling they do is a big factor too cause why waste a Hellcat like that.
      Frankly, all you need it to do is be able to catch normal traffic cars. Which the 5.7's and 3.6's can do quite well.
      What most of these Mopar boys who run fail to realize is that if the cops really want you, they are gonna get you. Especially if you run from them multiple times. A
      Even then, you ain't worth the effort most of the time.
      Running from the cops isn't about skill, only luck matters.
      Cause all it takes is for you to fly around a blind corner and someone to pull out in front of you.
      Plus, most departments have a pursuit policy of some kind, normally saying that if it reaches X speed, break off, too dangerous. Thus 392's and Hellcats would never actually be that useful aside from the Accerleration and uhhh, good luck getting that with that heavy ram bar on the front.

    Lookup "2023 Model Year Police Vehicle Evaluation" by the Michigan State Police. Other vehicles, namely Ford's Police Interceptor Utility (related to the Explorer) has been rated better. Ford's PIU has a higher ride height, roomier, and the all wheel drive Ecoboost is more fuel efficient than Dodge's RWD Hemi, and probably cheaper, too.

      Comparing the Turd to the Charger is not too intelligent. Compare it to the Durango. The test is primarily used by agencies to qualify vehicles for bidding purposes.
      Returning to reality, the Ford is a disaster. Most agencies purchase the 3.3 or hybrid, nit the ecoboom. It's still more expensive than the Charger, and comparable to the Durango. And Ford continues to cancel orders, while Dodge will sell a Durango to any agency that wants one.
      An agency in my county is returning all of their 2020+ turds on lease for new Durangos. They don't have enough usable space, they have trouble seeing out of them, and they haven't held up worth a damn.
      While none of the newer police models are particularly durable or reliable, dollar for dollar, the Dodge remains the best value.

    As long as you don’t have to pay for repairs, I guess the Dodge is ok….all the cops who want to live through a crash usually pick a Ford….wait until a few of the Chargers and Durangos are hit on the side of the freeway and cops start getting burned. Fords had this issue in the early to mid 90’s and took care of it. I bet Chrysler hasn’t been sued enough to bother with it. Ford would regain market share if they re-introduced a sedan to the lineup. A lot of cops don’t like the SUV because they perceive it to be tippy, even though the last few years the Explorer was(3.5 turbo) quicker,faster, braked better and went around the road course quicker than any Dodge.
