  • Where better to test a portable grill than while camping? I unbox and do my first cook on the Portable Masterbuilt Charcoal Grill while camped just outside the Memphis in May Barbecue competition to see if this grill deserves a spot at your next tailgate. This grill was provided at no cost from Masterbuilt

I understand making a living but masterbuilt and Kamado Joe are the same company in middleby. So please state that this is advertising for middleby. They have no customer service for a normal person and I am talking from personal experience. Try and get a person on the phone. I ordered a kamado joe and they sent me a master built. Middleby (KJ) would not honor my prior price so now I have a BGE. Stay informed everyone!

Great video. I bought mine a little over a month back with the 545 auto. I would recommend you try an olive wood only brisket ore a pork neck smoked like brisket.. it’s more smoke than oak but not acrid like mesquite. It’s more dense than oak but still a fruit tree…

Thank you for infecting me with the Kamado grilling style. Now I'm happy that my holiday home company offers holiday homes with a Kamado in the garden. Now I'll take the upgrade. 😅

Thanks for this video. I was secretly hoping you might give a try at some point and report on it. It fits most of my needs and I really close to adding it to my arsenal. One question: did you try a wood chunk only cook? I’m thinking Furtado wood chunks would fit.

Great video as always James!. Weber jumbo joe fits perfectly under my tonneau cover(f150). Nice and light for beach trips and the like.

I'm happy with the form factor of my Acorn Jr for camping and have been camping with it since 2019. A portable version of my Big Joe.

The masterbuilt is one of the 2 remaining grills I'm trying to decide between for my first camping trip since the kids were born. (5 years now on the oldest)
I'm leaning to the smokey mountain 14" though, since vertical storage isn't a problem and it offers a few more cooking options, without a requirement of power.

Maybe an odd question. On a long cook like Brisket on a reverse flow, the bottom may get crusty because of the thermal heat of the deflector. Do you have the same thing with these type of pits where the hot air gets blown from underneath the charcoal shoot. (What's the correct English spelling for Shoot if I'm refering to that box on the right side of the grate in an auto ignite?

That is a nice little grill and it seems to of work just fine judging from the color of the meat. I love to attend Memphis in May and maybe I make it next year.

I fit my KJR under my F350 hard cover by taking the top metal chimney part off. It's tight, but works. I just got a rack for our tt that attaches to the receiver on the rear of the tt. KJr a bag of charcoal + bag of lumps + A small Action Packer type tote full of peripherals and I'm set up like I'm back home. Freed up a lot of room in my P/U bed. I become one of the most popular guys in camp.

i would like to modify a metal bracket that the TT has for a propane griddle to hold a kamado but then i still have the tonneau cover issue as my F150 doesn't have the height nor did the truck GM was kind enough to lend me for this road trip as part of my backyard bbq rescue series and the memphis in may comp

@@SmokingDadBBQ we use to have a Jayco prior to this rv (Outdoors R V) it didn’t have a receiver on the rear bumper. I attempted to fabricate a tray and attach it to the rear bumper with U bolts. The bumpers are made with such thin metal I didn’t trust it though. I always travel with a small Weber propane grill and most of the time if camping with friends the KJr &/or the WSM. I bbq for a group of ~30 rv-er’s each summer at our annual camp out. Lots of fun.

No. I borrowed the truck for 2 weeks to do Memphis in May and my backyard bbq rescue series where I went to families homes to help. It’s not mine to keep. The trailer is our families.
The grill at no cost was given to me to keep

it looks quite the fun grill, but its price-point... OOFFFF.
Had expected it to be at most 200 euro, but at 400 euro, its a deal breaker for me.
