    That's a pretty paperweight you've made there. Restoration would imply that you could put the tool back to work. Your "wedge" isn't wedging anything. The grain run out, while pretty, will cause the handle to fail under any rigorous use. It would be a race to see if the hammer head flew off or the handle broke first.

    • @macrous2120
      @macrous2120 7 місяців тому +1

      Hey man, I genuinely learned something new and useful here! I looked up “grain run” per your comment btw.
      I agree that someone doing this level of “restoration” should go the extra bit to make it functional, showpiece or not.

    • @thefattesthagrid
      @thefattesthagrid 5 місяців тому

      @@macrous2120 That's not even a case of "going the extra bit". The dude has literally no clue what he's doing...
      Wedging a handle properly is way less work than this shit. But he said it right, I guess. Nice paperweight.

    Came out awesome as a wall hanger! Unfortunately not a useful tool, the hammer is imbalanced needs an additional 2Cm. of steel added to the face, and the brass plate addition to the handle will fly off if used vigorously for some time, there is no glue that will withstand the vibration. Looks good though! Additionally when filing stroke in one direction only, pulling back your file with pressure only dulls the file.

    • @whilomforge3402
      @whilomforge3402 2 роки тому +1

      @@ITBR_Restoration not necessarily. A hammer is sized according to the size and type of material being worked usually. So, for working small material it wouldn’t be too light. That said, I’m almost 100% positive that this was a top fuller.

    Is there a reason for waiting until assembled to do the finishing coat on the handle? I would think that be done prior to assembly (so all the wood is coated), then just do the top little bit after cutting the wedge top off.

      Ironically I’ve never thought about doing that myself. I’ve made a few of my own smaller 8oz rip hammer and ball peen hammer with stubby hickory handles, I use them in my trade for small cable clips or tapcon/concrete anchor inserts. I always waited till the end of the build to coat the handle in a few layers of Butcher Block Oil. But don’t the whole piece prior to putting the hammer head on wouldn’t hurt I don’t think?
