Middle School me was *obsessed* with mermaid stories. I even developed one, which I’m going to share to help our girl out with the algorithm. I have no intention of actually doing anything with this, it was just what angsty baby me developed. So, this mermaid girl Meera is the daughter of this mermaid gangster who gets caught by the kingdom and her punishment is to complete American High School, which, to be fair, is pretty bad. She then lives with this crazy exiled mermaid family that looks after her (I don’t even get their purpose/personality) and she meets this group of sidekicks, one of whom was an Angel-like (BTVS) love interest. Her mother is trying to get her back, and Meera loops her friends into helping her get back to her mom. Weird magical monster-of-the-chapter things keep popping up (again, like BTVS) and the group fights them with magic. Her mom’s goons keep popping up too, and somewhere around the middle she realises her mom’s a POS and sends her some magical message of teenage mermaid angst. Anyway, she mom switches gears from attacking the king to attacking her treacherous daughter and the story ends with Meera sacrificing herself by jumping into a portal that’ll transport her to a land of all water, where she is stuck for eternity…or until her friends use magic to get her out in chapter two of book two (hey, BTVS). I think it’s supposed to be a hero’s journey, but I only developed everything I just shared, so there’s not enough to make a hero’s arc out of it. I hope you enjoyed my weird preteen mermaid story. Have a *mertastic* day.

I used to love that book... In fifth grade ....two years ago I realized that there are more books to it. They are meh. Must be because I'm older now... Like... Mid twenties older. But then again I read kids books all the time and Emily is just... Meh. I like the first one since I've read it as a kid... But the books.... I don't know why but they scream Mary Sue. There is nothing Emily can't fix. I'm too old for that. I want unfixable stuff.

If you want to read a good mermaid series, Breakwater is a short but really good book. It takes place entirely under the sea (because the author was sick of every mermaid book being about humans joining the mermaid world). The book goes and brings attention to prejudice and discrimination in a world of mermaids and naiads and shows the pov of a privileged mermaid slowly beginning to understand how unjust and unfair the world actually is to those less lucky than her. Also, unlike most mermaid books, instead of being abt romance it starts off with murder.

There are webcomics that tell interesting mermaid stories, on Webtoons they have Castle Swimmer and Siren (I know sirens aren't mermaids but the story is very interesting due Sirens being cursed to be that way unless they switch with a human who is heartbroken.) There is Also a manga called Mermaid Boys which is basically modern version of the little mermaid except Ariel is a man who gives up his handsomeness instead, and the time limit is a year.

I'm actually working on a novel called Bioluminesecent about this orphaned kid (jessie) who got unofficially adopted into a family of a big brother in medical school (Jace) and his little sister (Stella)and like they're all just precious. but jessie has some bad dreams one night and starts hearing voices, after hijinks happen he ends up running away. and sort of follows a shadow down a dark alley with Stella close behind. he ends up following the thing till he gets to a small hidden cave, that's glowing mysteriously. ya know hijinks. but long story short he has an Into the Unknown (trademark) moment. and basically he goes into the cave and is immediately overtaken by these bug things that push him into a deep pool. where he falls into the water and like the water starts glowing around him. and so he does. and long story short he turns mermaid, but he doesn't really look like a "cliche Disney" mermaid. he's got this whole bioluminescent thing going on with stripes of glowed skin up and down his body. it just looks rad. and I'm bad at explaining things but, ya know the twist is that there's no love interest it's just a guy and a girl being best friends (we Stan) I apologize for having this really long comment

I agree with you. It's so frustrating for mermaid books to never do well. I feel like part of it is publishers don't give authors the resources to achieve a great mermaid book. I've read some mermaid books that the concepts were great but there needed to be better editing and I wonder if the publisher even gave the author an editor or if the editor even worked with them. Sometimes editors will have multiple books but only focus on a few and the ones that get neglected suffer because of it. It's still the publishers fault though because it's encouraged to focus on the books that will sell the best and mermaid books have never proven to sell well.

One is called Lost voices by Sarah Porter (they do sing to ships though and are girls who become mermaids after attempting suicide so there is some content warning, but the focus isn't on that and is tastefully handled I think ) and the other is called Deep Blue (Waterfiresaga series) by Jennifer Donnelly which has an interesting mythology. Took me forever to think of a book that had a mermaid in it (that I have read). However, it's not YA, it's a kids book. It's called "The Menagerie" by Tui T. Sutherland, Kari Sutherland, about hidden magical creatures.
The only YA book I can think about is one I haven't read yet (is it out yet even) "A Princess of Wind and Wave" by Melanie Cellier. I've really enjoyed her other fairy tale retellings, they have great characters and the plots range from okay to really good (none have reached below mediocre for me). So I'm sure her retelling of the little mermaid would be at least a decent story.
Edit: Just remembered this one I have read. "The little mermaid" by Jenni James, it's an okay story though I think her cinderella retelling is better. I also feel like it's more of a novella.

There's plenty of mermaid YA books that feature mermen as the main characters:
Son of a mermaid, The Vicious Deep, Lies Beneath, The mer prince adventures, The Oyster Thief, Merman's kiss.

yeah, there isn’t any good mermaid books :/ however, I recommend “Siren’s Lament” on WEBTOON. It might not be a mermaid story but it’s still great.

The Sirenia Series by Amber Garr was pretty good (although I’m pretty sure it’s more of a New Adult book than YA) it actually has a lot of folklore in it such as Sprites, Selkies and such, even having a pretty cool Clan system. Even though I describe it more as a guilty pleasure of mine XD

I'm writing a mermaid book and this video has been so helpful, this is actually the second time i've watched it. I am writing it so it would be appealing to younger readers but I want it to be good enough so that someone like you would like it too. Being able to hear your exact opinions feels like having insider stock information so Thank You! You're already on my "send a book to this person" list if I ever get published 😁

Ingo by Helen Dunmore is amazing although I suppose in America it'd be considered a middle grade series not ya. It's very much based on Cornish life/Mythology so it might be a nice break

I have actually read a book series about mermaid that I liked! The only problem being I'm not actually sure it was translated into english? But it's called "Le royaume de Lénacie" in french, it was written by Priska Poirier, and I remember really enjoying it when I was a little younger, I'm pretty sure I still have them stashed somewhere in a box!

Omg I was on a hunt for a good mermaid book once when I saw another UA-camr putting in on for tbr and I checked it out and it was amazingggg. You should try it it’s called Into the Deep by Mira Grant but u should first read her Rolling in the Deep, it’s a novella prequel, it’s short n you should read it to see if you’ll be interested in reading her other full novel Into the Deep. It’s nothing like a mermaid book I read it’s horror. Well it’s not technically mermaid it’s more of a siren but eh😅❤️

I'm not trans or anything but I'm the only boy I know of who is actually interested in books with girl main characters and girlish concepts, so I guess I am a freak of a man who actually likes books with less action.
At least my parents didn't worry about the possibility of me being queer, since they were too busy worrying about me being Autistic lol.

I’m late, but I would also like to point out some thing I’ve noticed in mermaid centric fantasy, book one cliffhanger, i’ve only read two books series is that centered on mermaids so it doesn’t bug me and it probably isn’t an actual cliché amongst these books, but if someone else noticed it, are they bothered by it?

The only mermaid book I've read is The Summer of Chasing Mermaids and it's a little mermaid retelling but there's really not much mermaid stuff it's just a contemporary w a girl who's mute and the little boy in the book loves mermaids and THAT'S IT and I only think of The Siren by Kiera Cass, but I know you said no sirens i've never read it but that's all i think when i hear mermaid lol Now i want a trans mermaid retelling and that's going to the list of things i want to write lol

I still really enjoy the Ingo Series. Sapphire is a realistically flawed character, and as the series goes on you can tell more and more that the Mer don’t think the same way that we do; but just as Saph learns to understand the Mer, so does Faro learn to understand humans.

...The third book of the Ingo series is called “The Deep”. Are you sure it’s not the same series?
The Ingo Series consists of “Ingo”, “The Tide Knot”, “The Deep”, and “The Crossing Of Ingo”, as well as an independent side story called “Stormswept”, though supposedly that last one isn’t as good as the main series.

I felt this. I'm a mermaid lover but YA can't do mermaids well at all. Every time they try to start this trend the books are boring as hell. Aquamarine was thinly plotted book that my young mermaid loving self bought because of the cover. Nothing likable about the mermaid at all. The movie was better. Imagine watching the movie first and then picking up the book and being disappointed. Best books featuring mermaids lately have been Middle Grade
