The fact that Ariel becomes the queen pissed me off so much. Attina was such a good sister and daughter. She always tried to keep the sisters in check and out of trouble she was afraid to let her father down and she was the oldest and the smartest. But now lets make a woman who doesn't even like this place that much a queen what's stopping us.

This review has made me want to get this book more than ever. I don't mind retellings shaking things up. It seems from your review, execution of new material was done poorly. So it didn't explain why the changes existed. That's just my opinion though. I have DNF'd the Conceal, Don't feel book for the time being. Not to bring any spoilers but it just feels like 'white girl probs, but tragic-ish.'

I think these are interesting in a 'published AU fanfic' kinda way. I've read the Frozen one and I have the BatB one but haven't read it yet.
I actually like the different take in the Frozen one. Instead of erasing Anna's memories of Elsa's magic, they erase both girls' memories of each other and they send Anna off to live in a little village with their mom's friend(?). It's interesting to see how the events of the movie play out like this.

Like, yes, Ariel made dumb decisions but you don't have to bring it up on EVERY. SINGLE. PAGE. (especially when your version of the characters are even more foolish) *sighs* Anyway, great review 👌

Honestly, by the way you described it, this reads like a fanfic made by someone who hated the Disney movie. Everyone is so out of character in this. It's also super clinical, which makes the tone clash with the original in a bad way. That's ashamed, because I would've love to see a story about what if Ursula got the trident and became empress of the sea. (As a side note, I disagree with you about the Greek Mythology. Atlantica is an analog for Atlantis and Trident was a Greek god, so the ties make sense.)

I personally read the Anna and Elsa one, Conceal Don't Feel. I read it as research for Middle Elsa, the character I was playing in Frozen, my school musical that was cancelled (thanks corona). I actually really enjoyed the book. I thought it was a different way to tell the tale of Frozen. Obviously, it wasn't the greatest book of all time, but I enjoyed reading it, and that's what matters.

also to kill kingdom is the best little mermaid retelling I have ever read!!!

  • @Heres_To_Music
    @Heres_To_Music 4 роки тому +16

Lol. This reminds of that essay I never got to write except on the topic of female agency in the fairytale and the Disney movie. I was going to argue the fairytale did it better since all she wanted was an immortal soul and the boy was really just a stepping stone compared to how the Disney version had that scene with Triton being all patriarchal like 'yep, this was my idea'... (but then a strike happened so I never wrote it or gotten beyond the bare outline). If you want to read a reverse!little mermaid then there's the Fisherman and His Soul by Oscar Wild ( though it's seen more as an allegory for homosexuality so not exactly similar to Disney's vision of the Little Mermaid).
Edit: I'm trying to find the version I watched with my mom once, spoiler: she dies in that one (someone really should have warned me as a kid). Instead, I found the 1960 Russian animated adaptation and this charming quote in the opening monologue by a fish: "Love doesn't exist, but mermaids do", lol.
Edit 2: someone told me it's the 1976 Czech version called Malá Morská Víla, thank you internet for allowing me to relive childhood nostalgia. :)

@@anna4951 Yeah, lol, a bit confused. The few things I remember about it is:
      - it was live-action (which made it weird given how they filmed it)
      - 'underwater' was represented as a blue-ish landscape (they didn't swim around just walked around and we kind of pretend they are underwater)
      - the branch-like hair with cobwebs (I think they were going for a vegetation-like hair)
      - the Little Mermaid's mom was turned into a statue because the human didn't love her (which made me feel bad for the father, like ouch)
      - I remember this one scene where they are on the ship, and she has to make the choice and all her relatives are waiting near the cliff/rocks for her to do the deed only for her to jump overboard (or at least I think she did because she turned to foam and then the sun was shining even though there was like a short before that).
It was weird the stuff I paid attention too. I watched it in Russian so I didn't catch everything but I knew enough to understand what was happening.

This just makes me sad, hearing that this person that wrote this book turned these characters into something they are not. Ariel and Eric aren't stupid, Ursula wants to take over the sea, not land. Ariel wants to go up to the surface because it was her DREAM to be a human. She didn't just go up to the surface just for a boy. In The Little Mermaid, Ariel had a dream and was willing to do anything to make her dream come true. Eric was her PUSH into making Ariel actually try to make her dream come true.
The Little Mermaid is about a mermaid who has a dream, but people thinks it's about a mermaid lusting for a human boy and that pisses me off so much because they are missing the whole message the movie is trying to say and I feel like I'm the only one who smart enough to catch the message of the story of The Little Mermaid.
The story of The Little Mermaid is such a beautiful story about a mermaid fulfilling her dream of being a human.
Ariel was already had a collection of human things in a cave, where she sung a whole song "Part of Your World", but it's more like "Part of That World" since she sung this before meeting and saving Eric. (In the song, if you listen to it closely she says "part of THAT world" never "part of your world") After she saved Eric and had a crush, she did was any normal girl did when they had a crush. Then She had that argument with her dad, and he destroyed her whole collection of human objects so after he left and Ursula's eels (I have what their names are) took this chance and tell Ariel about Ursula and so does what some teenagers do when their parents don't let them do something and out of rebellion and that push she got from Eric earlier in the movie she went with the eels to Ursula to fulfill her dream of becoming a human and exploring land, and on the side possibly try to get with her crush, not knowing that she's putting herself, her family and maybe her crush in danger. All she wanted was to be a human and explore land. And then at the end she got her dream, getting more time to explore and alongside that, she gets to be with her crush, Eric.
In the story, Eric has two roles in the story:
    One: Be the love interest.
And Two: Be Ariel's push to actually fulfill her dream.
Also, let's talk about Part of Your World because I feel like this might be a part of the reason why people get so confused on why Ariel wants to go to the surface.
This song should actually be called is "Part of That World" because in the song she never said "your" in Part of That World, calling the humans "people" and she sings it to both herself and Flounder who are both sea creatures and it doesn't make sense if she said "your" while singing to herself and Flounder because they aren't from the surface.
While the song she sings to Eric after saving him should be called "Part of Your World" Because she is saying "your" and is singing to Eric so it would make sense if she says "your" in that song because she's singing to Eric who is a human and from land.
This is like the whole "Belle fell in love with her kidnapper" thing. No. She. Didn't. Belle never fell in love with Beast until the very end of the movie. When Belle was held prisoner by Beast, she didn't like him until he started to be more nicer and the two made a friendship with each other. Beast may have fallen in love with her, but she never did with him. Beast was friend zoned for the whole middle part of the movie. then Beast let her go, breaking off the whole "you are my prisoner" thing because he wants her to be happy, even though the curse might kill him or whatever the curse does when the last petal falls. So after he let her go, Belle was no longer his prisoner and was free. At that mob scene, she literally says "he's my friend" and she went back to warn Beast (who was her friend) about the mob that was going to kill him. And then when Beast faced off Gaston and then after Gaston died and Beast was dying that's when Belle fell in loved with him.
Ariel dreamed of going up to the surface and Belle friend zoned Beast until the very end of the movie.
Now in this book, that writer should have made Ursula the Queen of The Sea while forcing Voiceless Ariel to be her servant and with the sisters straight up putting them in prison or turn them into those weird plant things in her house and have Ariel try to make a plan to escape Ursula's grip, and then try to save the sea when she does escape. While Eric could either still be under Ursula's spell or she could make him and everyone forget that everything that happened, forget about Ariel, the wedding and all of that and Eric wouldn't be under Ursula's spell, but Eric feels like something is wrong with him, he doesn't know what, but has dreams of a girl because Ursula's magic can't change dreams and by the start of the story, he goes to try to find this girl to see if she can get rid of this feeling that something is wrong. And then Ariel and Eric run into each other and then Ursula realizes Ariel's gone and has the whole kingdom looking for her. Ariel and Eric become friends again and Ariel tries to help Eric assuming she probably has magic of her own (but it would be a lot weaker then her father's magic?) but it doesn't work and the two work together to defeat Ursula after finding out both their problems. And then at the end, when Ursula's dead, Ariel get her voice back and her freedom and Eric gets his memories back. And then Ariel's oldest sister inherits The Late Sea King's trident and makes Ariel into a human and she can be a human and be with Eric.
Well obviously this would need to take more then an hour or so to plan a whole book with this path. I just came up with this under like an hour, but I feel like this would be more appropriate and canon to The Little Mermaid, Ursula rules the sea, Ariel belongs to Ursula and Eric is not under Ursula's spell (because she does not care about him, she was just using him to make Ariel fail the deal she made with Ursula), but basically erased his memory of Ariel and both his and the crowd's memory of the wedding. But still make him a part of the story by him dreaming of a girl (Ariel) and feeling like something is wrong with him that will eventually lead him into finding Ariel again and then the two like in the movie will work together to kill Ursula in the end.
Oh my stars, this comment is long, I didn't mean for that. I'm sorry.

@@carolinejewson5473 wait, really? What's its number in the collection? It didn't come up in class so I didn't know. I've been trying to read the entire collection but I've only gotten to number 182 so far. But are you sure you're not confusing it with the selkie and shapeshifter stories (like stories 1, 25, 65, 108)?

@@carolinejewson5473 ? ... All I'm asking is the official designated number of the story in the collection you are talking about, my translation has the unpublished works so I should be able to find it. But Anderson wrote THE Little Mermaid, that is the one where she died. So I just want to read the Brothers Grim version that you are talking about.
