I wish the main subject he used for his argument is about racism not religious persecution. His skin color alone set those people off. That is the real underlying issue.

As a muslim, i was so surprised how well a muslim character was done in this show. I don’t think i ever saw something like it anywhere else. Kudos to the show makers, really.
And the ending, man, that was good.
IDK, I haven't ever watched this show but the narrative that an American Muslim looks like this is part of the issue. Last I checked the largest part of the American ummah was African Americans/Africans yet this character is exactly what every one perceives as the default American Muslim. This notion became sinister after 9/11 but I think it would have played out differently if the perception was a truer one.

I mean, i’m not from the US, so i can’t judge. But as a whole, this was a much better muslim character than i’ve seen before.
actually more than half of american muslims in the us are of middle eastern and south asian descent and black muslims barely make up 20 percentage, african americans being even less about 12%. @@excalibur6159 But you know what? Let me educate you on 'my pals', since you clearly happen to be uneducated on the topic. Even though I'm American, I grew up in an Indian and Hindu background. Right around the corner from where I grew up, there's a gurdwara, a holy site for Sikhs. They run a langar or a common dining hall for anyone and everyone, calling the food they serve as "Prashad" or holy bread, because its considered sacred and in the service of God, to serve your community. What race/religion/demonination/social creed/tax bracket are you, is not a question that gets asked there. About 10 miles from where I grew up, is the ISKON, or a Hare Krishna temple, and they do the same thing, no strings attached, because serving your community is one's holy duty.
My Dad always taught me shlokas or hymns, main amongst which, was one central to Hindu scripture, "Ekam Sat Vipraha Bahutavadhamti." Which in Sanskrit means, "The Truth is One, But the paths to it are Many."
That's my culture, those are "my pals". And yeah, I'm proud to be a part of a 10,000 year old culture and tradition of acceptance and humility. Sure, there are bad people in this world, people who hate, people who will make you question your moral principles every single day, people like you, who are no different than those who commit bigotry, anywhere in the world.
I used to be pissed about it, but now I accept it for what it is, ignorance, that breeds fear, that then breeds violence. I also realize, that by seeing your true self, I don't feel anger, rather pity, that your very ignorance makes you a tool for someone else to use you, someone with an agenda, and bring you and others, grief. Because your fear and hatred can always be manufactured.

Hopefully a lot of people will take this scene seriously, and not just as a “well acted dialogue”. I’ve met several people that feels this way living in America, misjudged and feared just because they are true to his muslim believes.
Not just in America, but in muslim majority country some people also being exiled in coomunity due to they want to be true as muslim.

There was a lot of this at the time, where all of a sudden Muslim students were running into visa problems in the early 2000s. Can’t study in the US without citizenship, a green card, or a visa, so a lot of people were forced to abandon their universities partway through their degrees

Even in the end, he kept his dignity.
And he was on the verge of dying. And he prayed with his son, it was such a heartwarming scene
He was pretty good in Haunting of Bly Manor....Mike Flanagan knows how to reuse his actors effectively....much like Tarantino.

I keep forgetting this man was the chef. I remembered his character when I first saw him in Midnight Mass but from there he just became the town's police chief with a good heart...he's actually good hearted in both characters really

I also loved his monologue at the school during the parent night. It’s so rare that I feel like shows with Muslim characters actually try to understand Islam. This show does.

i felt for him during this. worst is it feels way to real to be just something put on script. like they had called onto somebody who actually lived thru this and with great honor told his story on the show. i teared up in the end when he willingly accepted his fate with his son and the one persecuting him just did her worst trying to run from what was gonna happen.
True, he is already certain that he's going where his son is. He never force him with his belief and in the end he returned with his own resolve. The last scene of them is one of the best moment of this show.
Rahul (Sherif Hassan's actor) is actually not Muslim. He's atheist and British-born but he has for sure felt this kind of outsider-ness as he has said in podcasts. It wasn't hard for him to translate that feeling to this acting scene.

This show contain some strong scenes that I did not expect to find in a horror TV Show. The lessons these characters taught us were powerful and special and I loved them for it
You should watch Mike Flannagans other works then. Haunting of Hill House and Haubting of bly manor ste incredibly powerful stories.

Hello I'm Reese,I feel this so much, I'm Muslim, I've serving in the US Army for the past 2 years since I was 19. I know the feeling of not having your coworkers trust, for them to refuse to go to the range with you because you're Muslim. It's hard serving a country that's distrustful of you. I know that once I take off this uniform for good in 3 more months. Those "thank you for your service" and "We support you" comments will dissipate. It's a fucked up reality, and it's one I've unfortunately had to experience.

The mystery drew me into this show. But I stayed for the INCREDIBLE character interactions.
The crazy thing is this actually really happens to many muslims who work in that field. In France, you will be finding high positionned muslim policemen/ investigators who work to fight terrorism get suspected and lose their position and become an outcast. I can give you an example of someone who was suspected: Noam Anouar, whose job was to literally fight terrorism and yet!

I’ve lived in Queens all my life as a Muslim, I know all my neighbours very well however when something happens which leads to criminal investigation usually involving bearded men , nobody hesitates to point the finger at me despite the fact I’ve been a back bone to the community, raised money for funerals but because I’m Muslim they hate me. I take it as a Test from God and understand that going to heaven isn’t gonna be easy, so if God wants to test the sincerity of my faith in order for me to have everlasting comfort in Heaven so be it!

So I know Rahul from his youtube videos/podcasts so on. I was so pleasantly surprised to see that he is a breathtaking actor as well. This is an awesome performance.
I had my nose pressed to the screen listening to this the first time. And it also broke my heart to know there was so many who resonated with his feelings
A wonderful scene
An awesome performance by Rahul. As a Muslim, he has my stamp of approval. The monologue itself is very well-written, but I have to say it feels a little bit forced in light of the story's circumstances at that point. If they were having a heartfelt one to one like Riley and Erin, it would've made more sense. But given the urgency and serious nature of the situation, he could've made his point with far fewer words.
I agree. Put in another moment in the story this would have been nice. But him having this monologue in the midst of such urgency and danger felt really uncalled for and out of place.
As another Muslim, I'm on the fence about how much I like Hassan. Rahul is awesome, of course, but I think his arc has a little too much real-world political commentary which I don't think meshes well with the rest of the story which is covered in symbolism.
Great actor, great character, great dialogue. Just not sure that this is the right show to deliver all that.
@@skipr5811 Yeah, I'm personally not all on board for representation and political commentary when it's not an essential part of the moral of the story. So if you don't knock it out of the park, just don't do it at all. I resect the effort though.
@@faresmhaya Oh no, in this case, it actually is essential to the moral of the story. It's a story about religion in America and having a Muslim there is genuinely compelling.
I loved when he talked about his view on God and miracles. I just wish they focused more on the spiritual aspects of his identity instead of the political/racial aspects. Or at least I wish they didn't do that through 5 minutes of tragic backstory.
@@skipr5811 I should've been more specific. For me, the story isn't about the struggle of minorities in a given community, but how different beliefs can bring both the good and the bad to the table. That's why it felt out of place for me.

As a muslim guy, I gotta say Rahul nailed the character. Such a fantastic actor.
It feels nice to see a brown muslim guy like me being portrayed as a normal person rather than a caricature or a walking stereotype. And the scene where he explains the Islamic view of Jesus is spot on. I understand that a lot of American Christian's dont understand that Muslims believe in Jesus. The reality is that Islam, Judaism and Christianity is connected in more ways than most people realize. Most people don't understand the concept of Abrahamic faiths and that leads to a lot of misunderstandings and fighting which is really sad. Jews, Christians & Muslims have more similarities than differences.

Just my opinion, but I really wished that they could've cut down on some of the long monologues, so that Sheriff Hassan had more screen/character building time. In fact, I wouldn't have minded switching the story's perspective from Riley's to his as the "outsider looking in".
That would’ve been interesting. It would’ve also made for a humorously ironic dynamic, what with him being also being a religious man whose views are altruistic and harmless, yet being seen as a threat by the people forming an actual death cult.

Did not know of Rahul before he showed up on Funhaus but seeing him in Mike Flannagan's stuff he's been absolutely killing it
That was such a moving and well acted scene. Absolutely amazing performance.
Loved his work in iZombie (whole show is full of underrated performances), but it's great to see him in a more serious role, and if there was any character in this whole show I was rooting for, it was him. This, the speech at the school meeting, how he is with his son, the character is just so likeable and smart, yet also very serious and competent.
The fact that this show created so many amazing scenes of just ppl talking shows how good these actors, writers, and the director are.
What I like about scenes like this is 1) opening my eyes to other group's experiences and 2) to understand in the US we are all considered "others" when our skin is our sin.
Unfortunately, they are still not allies and sadly despite their experience they will still discriminate and be racist to black people.

@@167thSpartan @Pesi Belau. Pesi I grew up in Chicago where most of our local stores were owned and operated by muslim people. They were not kind to us. We can have that belief when that is are only experience. Looking back retrospectively, sometimes I believe it wasn't that they were racist against us, we had people in our community that proved to be over-bearing and unfortunately it reflected on us all. Yeah sometimes people can be tribal.
However, when our exposure increases, you meet people you like, don't like and at the end of the day, we have much in common than we realize. I met muslim people in the old neighborhood that treated me quite poorly. However during my working career, I have met amazing muslim people that originated from Lebanon, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Turkey and other countries.
Ray sometimes people's opinions are shaped by their experiences. If every muslim person you met treated u poorly then that would be your opinion. I am a fan of traveling because it can reshape your opinions. We have to get out of our environments.

Nobody is treated as bad as non muslims are treated in muslim majority countries. So no. In the Middle East, you can’t own property as foreigners. Can’t eat outside during Ramadan. In Pakistan people have weaponised blasphemy laws. So no. They are not some oppressed minority throughout the world. As an outsider, America is one of the fairest places in the world. All the people crying of oppression, people in their origin countries, treat others much worse.

He sells the monologue with such emotion I don't even care about show don't tell.
An aspiring screenwriter made a post about pitching a script where an earlier scene is word for word lifted from his experience being a muslim kid in an american school on 9/11 and getting sent to the principle's office. The response from a producer (like a serious producer too) was that the script was good but the scene in the principle's office was too heavy handed and nobody would believe it. That scene was the only scene of the script that was completely lifted from an actual experience
