Pencil Beginners Tutorial Making a Simple Walk Cycle Animation (Four Frames)

- This tutorial shows how to use the free animation package Pencil, to make a simple walk cycle (four frames).
Pencil is an animation tool designed to allow traditional animation techniques to be carried out on a computer.
It offers two techniques that are used in traditional animation, onion skinning and layers.
Onion skinning gives a semi-transparent image of the previous frame as a guide for drawing the current frame.
Layers allow background images to remain in the background so that only changes to foreground objects need to be drawn.
Pencil is a basic tool designed for the specific task of implementing traditional animation. The animator is expected to draw every frame (that changes) a task which is much easier with some form of stylus rather than a mouse.
The drawing tools are basic and limited e.g. no oval tool and very little control over vector graphics. There are no facilities for the computer to create ‘in-between’ frames (tweening) or any other method of interpolating between key frames.

For some reason when i draw on a canvas it doesn't seem to let the drawing stay, it just disappears after like i draw a circle or something.

I keep having a problem with the curve smoothing setting not effecting the drawing, it seems to be stuck somewhere in the middle but it obviously does not change when I adjust the bar :/
It's probably because you keep drawing with the bitmap layer instead of the vector layer.
@@thetoasters2364 what is the difference of bitmap layer and vector layer? how do i determine to use one?

guys i have figured it out, when onion frames are building up, go to preferences, tools and the change the number of previous frames to 1. Your welcome, have a lovely day.

Hey this tutorial is really helpful! but i have a problem... im trying to adapt the cycle to a character of mine but because im going to export it i need to do this annoying thing so the canvas isnt a void :/ which means onion skin is pointless... help?

+Hotto Dogu Hi, I made this tutorial some time ago and I have forgotten how Pencil works. I now make tutorials for the 3D package, Blender, you can use that for 2D animation and it is much, much more powerful but complicated (my channel is ianscott888). Unless they improve Pencil a lot, you will only be able to use it for very basic animations. Sorry I couldn't help :(

What version are you using? PLEasE REPLY because every version I use doesn't work! I tried two and the first one is everytime I draw something the thing I draw dissapeers and the second version dosentwork because if I draw one thing it shows on every other frame and if I try to erase it on one frame it just erases that part on every frame please help!

What version of Pencil is this? I'm using v0.6.0, which is missing some of the stuff you're using (Options window: Preserve Alpha, Stop at contours, Invisible, Tools Window: Modify curve tool @6:15....the same icon in my version gives me "SMUDGE".)
But has stuff your version doesn't (Edit Menu: Cut (CNTRL-X), Clear Frame, Flip X or Flip Y, The Colour Wheel, Camera Layer, Copy Frame, etc.)
Little things are annoyingly different.....like when I click to draw, NOTHING is drawn until I release the mouse, then everything drawn appears at once. (Drawing a circle freehand is hard enough if you can SEE it as you draw it. Try doing it blind!)
When I try to delete the camera layer, I get an error message saying I have to keep it.

just try to use pen when you in vector layer
Go down and click the "+" button and it will add a clip, the reason why it isnt working its cause the clips are full

Just click on add frame button on timeline there will be 2 plus button one before the minus button for add frame and one after the minus button to copy last frame 👍
