Koreans VS American Stereotypes(Movies=/=United States)

- So my Korean friends had a lot of questions..and curiosities on the United States. There are a couple of strange stereotypes that they have here on American based on movies. A lot of them are quite cute and silly, and I tried to cure their curiousity. Hope you enjoy the video :)

I can't tell you how many times Korean people were shocked that we eat rice in the US.
I'm not Korean but really I was shocked too 😆
hambuger?
Can I ask? Do ppl in US rinse their rice before cooking? Because I see few footages when ppl don’t rinse the rice.
吴Tasya some people do but not everyone... I think it depends on what culture you were brought up in
@@rambutketiak It depends! My family rinses rice if we don't want it to be sticky when it's cooked. Otherwise we don't really bother. Could be a US thing, Latinx thing, or just a personal thing lol

Netflix shows, American and British entertainment companies and cultures are fairly entwined and not that different relative to the context of this vid.
Yeah he should have shown VD or American Pie or something
Dave. 😂😂😂😂😂 You're killing me. Also, these guys are hilarious. Please do this again.
Also, an update regarding insults. Gen Z is savage and giving us a whole new vocabulary for cruelty. 😂🤦🏼♀️
Ikr, gen z is like a whole different culture

@@catboyblep9687 I have read conversations between members of Gen Z about Millennials and felt bullied indirectly. 😂 Like, damn.
Wait how different are we zoomers to y'all?
As a zoomer, I guess we are weird. We'll use "sweetie" as an insult but we'll call our best friend "b*tch" in a nice way lol
There's a lot of disagreement about whether Americans wear shoes indoors or not. The answer is: it depends. You have to remember Dave comes from one part of the US and he hasn't been back in 11 years.
The US is filled with a wide variety of cultures and personalities which are also affected by the wildly different regions. America is HUGE (like North and South Korea are about the size of Minnesota, that's one state!) so the climate differences can be pretty vast. Someone in the colder regions of the North US, for instance, might not want to wear shoes indoors because it would track snow, mud, and debris in their home, whereas someone in the deserts of the south might think it's alright because there isn't much coming in on those shoes other than a bit of sand/dust. Or someone from a farm might not want to wear shoes indoors cause they work with manure, whereas someone in the suburbs might think it's alright cause they're only walking on pavement. It also varies by ethnicity and what an individual person considers hygienic. Sometimes it also has to do with carpets and wood/tile floors which don't usually have underheating. Tile/wood floors can be cold so I know quite a few people who have indoor slippers. A lot of people also have active pets and some feel that they shouldn't bother taking off their shoes because the animals are outside all the time and bring whatever is on their paws indoors anyway.
I've never heard of anyone sleeping with their shoes on though, unless they were so exhausted from work that they just collapsed on the bed.
yes alot of it probably have to do with where your ancestors came from. Just like you can tell like some difference in the food depending on if its like a italian american, german american, african american, scandinavian american etc. Alot of things are the same if you been here for like atleast 3-4 generations but there is alot of things that came along from the old countries. Although black people really lost most of their knowledge because of slavery, a cultural expert would probably know the roots by food, sayings, furniture etc.
Give this comment a round of applause 👏
yeah, i totally agree. my family always had the no shoes in the house rule when i was growing up, but there’s plenty of people who weren’t raised that way. it usually comes down to what your family taught you to do. whenever people come over, i’ll usually let it slide if they’re only walking on the wood/tile/etc, but if they try to step on the carpet w/shoes on i will start frantically shouting at them to take their shoes off. from my own experience, i feel like it’s around 75% do wear shoes in the house & 25% don’t.
When I was younger we actually weren’t allowed to take our shoes off until we got to our bedrooms because they would all pile up and no one could find theirs in the morning. And sometimes our pets would chew on shoes that we left out in the open too, or drag them off to somewhere else in the house.
One time I got out of bed and I was surprised to see I had shoes on... I dont know how I just totally forgot they were on. Most of the time we try to take them off at the door though, or at least on the 1st floor
You've been out of the US for a while Dave 😉 my last CT scan was $7,000. In 2016 My son spent 2 weeks in the hospital ICU after an accident, and without including the life light or the actual doctors bills (because doctors and transport bill separately from the hospital) the bill for just the hospital stay was $473,000.00
With insurance?!
No. But we were so rattled by everything we forgot to give the hospital our insurance info, so the original bills we got were astronomical. Luckily after they billed the insurance our out of pocket max was 30k. Still took a major hit and forever to pay off.
Co-pays depend on the insurance, the deductible, and whether you're in or out of network. For example (we have better insurance now) but in 2019 we had a $8,000.00 deductible then Co-pays and an 80%/20% split until out of pocket max of $14,000.00 was reached per individual or $24,000.00 for the entire family. And once you count the amount you are paying for your private health insurance each month, is that CT scan or MRI really just the cost of your co-pays? I'm not trying to start a debate or say there's anything wrong with our healthcare (I quite like the quality of care we have access to), I'm just saying it truly is far more expensive than even Dave let on.
pdhouse which is in fact a huge problem because most insurances are tied to a persons job and not all jobs offer insurance and if they do they only cover after you’ve spent thousands to match them on what they’re willing to pay
almost half a million dollars??? that is insane
Aw it’s nice you brought your friends to talk and educate them about cultural differences between America and Korea. Not all cases are the same for every American (I’m Filipino-American) so the discrepancies can be found between races and cultures. For the shoe question, a lot of White people don’t like wearing shoes in the house too but I agree when a lot do bring in their shoes in the house. Thank you for also talking about police brutality though it was brief.
It all begins with a conversation! Then you’ll realize how much people from different cultures and backgrounds have in common 🙌💯😎👍

I'm not surprised at a lot of these stereotypes lol
But I will say that houses aren't very inexpensive anymore. Millennials and Gen Z often joke about how having a house isn't even a dream anymore because of the economy. In the South, houses might be much cheaper, but up North from the East to West coasts, houses are unrealistic for a lot of us younger people. Apartment living is much more expected and normal now. Even in the suburbs, I see a lot of people who rent out rooms as if they're an apartment.
Even down south cause so many are moving from the north, home prices has ballooned and anything under 250k is either less then 1000 sq ft or is in need of repair
Bro in Australia we're fucked. Can't even afford an apartment
What keeps me stuck in an apartment is just the inability to go through and get a loan. It’s such a pain in the butt.
Id say that again depends on the region my parents live in east TN and only 2 years ago they built a house down there in a brand new neighborhood for about 250k
Zoe Petersen fr unless i get a good job outta uni im probably gonna be living with my parents until im 30 lmao
It would be cool to see Dave do this video with an American who hasn’t been living in Korea. Mainly because it can help seeing how he describes these things compared to someone living in the US now.
“i thought it would be me” it is you! i promise - dave don’t have that judgement 😂
Right? I was thinking the same thing.
I feel the same!!😌
I thought him too lol
I was thinking that too lol
Lolol I thought the same thing. I was like noooot quite lol.
Oh god I was in Korea last summer for school and there was one night where I went to like a big club get together and a couple of these koreans I had just met started interrogating me about weed (one if the other americans cracked a joke about Colorado where I'm from) and it was so awkward. Like it was such an abrupt shift in tone. I never really thought much about it, like I know drug culture there is super taboo, but in the states like, drugs in general are illegal but all of us, even the super conservative people know at least one or two people who have at least done weed if not something harder. And them asking me about it was just constant shock. One of them looked seconds from his jaw snapping off when he'd asked if I'd ever tried weed and I was like...uh once, ya know, at a party. They kinda stopped talkin to me after that which was extra awkward to like, bro im not a stoner or like a methhead😭 I never realized how seriously the no drugs kind of culture is taken by your average joe in Korea til then. It was definitely interesting.
same for Japan, I did a paper in college for about this topic, cultural differences are crazy
here where I live the best university in the country is a known place for having weed everywhere, even though it's illegal lol
I grew up in india & recently emigrated to the States, i totally relate to the asian “no drug” culture part😅
and funny things i have friends from states and asked about smoking weed stuff on my country (which is asia but not east) and do me a surprise that it is kinda taboo here lol

I laugh so hard when Dave said American eat rice and there were shocked!!. Rice a very common food across the whole world.
Brandon Holmes yeah the American food stereotype of burgers and hot dogs is a bit off. Every American probably eats more Chinese and Mexican than those to be honest.
Yeah. When 10years ago, news showed us american food: hamburger pizza coke... but now, koreans know America have many different cultures, so we know american eat rice.
@@nowwwoo that's good. I'd say traditional American food is Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner as well as southern food "soul food". We have Cajun cuisine as well.
@@jacew9683 I really doubt the average American eats more Chinese and Mexican food than hod dogs and hamburgers. The whole of America is littered with fast food American places. Only Taco Bell is common throughout the whole US, and that's not even real Mexican food. It doesn't compare to all the Wendy's, McDonalds, Burger Kings...

That shoe in the house varies. In my family, as soon as I came home my parent told me to take off my shoes and wear house shoes. Don’t walk around in socks or barefoot cause it will get dirty.
Same. I am white and we were never allowed to wear shoes in the house in my family and now that I'm an adult I still don't in my apartment. Growing up all my non Asian friends would be confused when I would enter their houses and start taking my shoes off. My Asian friends moms loved that I took my shoes off without being asked though.
wait why would it get dirty when you're in your home i walk around barefoot and my feet aren't dirty lol
@@pelin0611 lol. maybe she's living in a carpet floor. Korean apartment has a heating system on the floor. so we are used to sitting or lying on the floor. that's why most of Korean mothers do vacuum and mop the floor very often.
in my house, i personally don't like walking in with my outside shoes. my parents don't care, but it's not a problem because we're always sweeping the floor lol however, if we're going to visit someone else's house, we take our shoes off out of courtesy.

As a Filipina-American, I like that this hit a lot of really common generalizations about Americans from movies. The shoe thing is really dependent on culture though -- I grew up in the Bay Area with a lot of other minorities, and we all take our shoes off in the house lol! And we eat rice! It's interesting to find out that eating rice isn't seen as common in the US.
I'd LOVE to see more of these videos with people from other cultures more in depth, to get a real good look at the cultures and get rid of stereotypes and false info, just culture Q&A's. Thanks for sharing!
I feel like he should've mentioned regional dishes too (Cajun, New England, etc) since they're technically American food too.
This was so sooo fun! I loved your energy and it was really interesting to learn what stereotypes Koreans have about the US!
And Wonshik did great promoting his self, his low pitched voice (when he spoke english) sounded really good too, if only he could speak more like that :)
I love the extra internal-Dave comments 🤣🤣🤣 good job with the editing!
And yes! As an American, I would consider Dave attractive. Not only is he physically attractive, him being bilingual, having a job he's passionate for, being open-minded, talking great care of furbabies, and being a nerd add to his attractiveness 👍
I was so surprised to hear them mention Harlem! I've been living here all my life and it's honestly changed from what they know of. Of course, this is still kind of a low income area with projects, but a lot of my home is being overrun by big business :( my surrounding neighborhood is mostly small businesses with a few New York chains or global chains, but the hotspot of Harlem has been taken over by large outlet malls and many places I used to go to are being bought out. Full blocks have been torn down and rebuilt with commercial spaces. I'll be moving into my own white picket fence home soon and I'll be sad to see the neighborhood be even more different as time goes on
“Houses in California are inexpensive” Not in California it’s not! My house was $425,000 and it’s not even a two story house located in a lower middle class neighborhood.
I was just about to say. Houses in California are in the millions.
My cousins are looking into moving and the houses they were looking at (2 story, small/no backyard, needs a bit of fixing up, and is in a middle class area) was over $800,000... my friend moved into one that looks about the size of the picture he showed in the corner and it was a million dollar house... California is expensive
425,000 DAMN thats way out of my price range mines lik 80,000 or 100,000
my friend you are well off
I died at the caption “He is Nara mangshin” 😂😂😂
what does that mean? I know a decent amount of Korean but I haven't really learned any bad words or insults or something similar to those if you get what I mean lol
Yeah I also missed that
Ashley Muñoz oh it means u are a disgrace to your country 😂😂😂
ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ What I also wanted to know when I first visited the U.S.!🤯 Came back to Korea now, I still get those questions from my Korean friends about the States🤣 Nice video👍
That's the thing with stereotypes they generalize you
Into a group, and U.S being a Multicultural country we're all different from each other so certain things dont apply to some people. But who tf sleeps with shoes stone them.
It’s funny seeing you say “everyone’s not liberal” when usually I would have to tell foreigners that everyone’s not conservative
Those who pay attention to news and politics think Americans are conservatives idiots. Those who only know of Americans via movies think Americans are liberal.
맨날 한국에 관한 것만 보다가 우리가 가졌던 미국에 대한 생각에 대해 알아보니 색달랐어요!!!!좋은 영상 고마워용!
There are lots of Americans who do not wear their shoes inside the house. It just depends on personal or family preference.
Yeah, as an American I personally can’t stand wearing shoes in the house myself
never met a white person who doesnt...genuinely. again, not saying all do, but all houses ive gone, they all wear shoes. been in the US for 30 years now, something i will never get over personally. always found it odd, putting it lightly.
Same, In every white person's house I've been in, they wear shoes. Which was kind of a shock when I first came to America. But I've been to one house of Fijian American and another house of an African American church member, and they took their shoes off at the door.
I’m white and don’t wear shoes in the house. It’s super gross...
The vast majority of Americans do wear shoes in the house. There are always exceptions which people make out to be equal to the majority- which it’s not.
I really appreciate this video! There are definitely a lot of misunderstandings about Americans - and other foreigners here!
But! I've never seen anyone wear shoes to bed except in movies?! Have you?!
Honestly, when I see it in media I want to jump through the screen and rip them off their feet...
Born and raised in NYC and it always peeves me to see people of other cultures think Americans wear shoes in their home. I've been to many peoples houses and I've almost ALWAYS had to take my shoes off (who tf wants your dirty ass shoes on the floor?!?!?!). Granted there was only one time where I didn't have to take off my shoes, and that was in a Greek American's apartment.
I think part of that comes from where that persons family originated. I’m African, and you can’t have shoes in the house here, same with all my Asian American friends
99% of americans ik wear shoes in the hoise. It's honestly a 50/50 chance either way.
Same here in florida, maybe cause i visit mostly haitian households but we alway take our shoe off???
It depends on location - rural areas I find to generally be okay with wearing shoes in the house, especially places like the southwest where you may find things like scorpions/centipedes/snakes.
Cities often are the opposite, because there's less "nature dirty" on the shoes and more "people dirty" like pollution, garbage, etc.
EXACTLY in my 20 years i've never meet someone who doesn't take off their shoes. my mom would have smacked me if i didnt. the only times i don't take them off is if it's for a brief visit to someone or i left something in my house. other than that it's considered rude. and i'm as white as they come so i can't put it on culture lol
They are so funny! One thing I notice is the way Korean people speak. They are very blunt and in America that usually gets taken as being rude. The way they joke with you despite you only having met them that day would probably not go over well here. It's quite interesting as to what people get offended by or see as disrespectful in other cultures. I hope you bring them on again because they were a great laugh and hearing about their questions is always super interesting! Thanks for the videos Dave you're doing great! :D
I always feel like people joke very quickly in the States as well, but I think it varies from person to person! And jokes are hard to translate to your second language, for sure! I always feel like sarcasm especially doesn't translate from English to Korean - and some other languages haha. Also, I know what you mean about the bluntness! Culturally we don't always joke (or talk) about the same things - appearance for example!

Oof the prices of housing in different states are insane. Georgia housing, especially in farm areas are waaaaaaaaay cheaper than the house I lived in near downtown Salt Lake City, Utah.
In Georgia we bought a 2 floor barndominium on 26 acres of horse property for less than the 800sq ft home with a tiny backyard in Utah. We can't even afford low rent in Utah.
PotterYouRotter7 I feel like that’s because you’re in SLC. Provo, orem, or any other area has relatively cheap rent - for like 800 a month. If you’re a student at uni you also do get rent for like 400-500. Which is wayyy cheap!

this was cool of you to talk about cultural differences between the us and korea. i feel like a lot of non-americans don't realize there are a lot of different cultures within the states, so a lot of generalizations don't apply to everybody. like the food here is gonna be different depending on your own cultural background. i was surprised that they were shocked we eat rice! same thing with wearing shoes in the house. this all depends on your racial and cultural background. i'm asian and latina so the food i eat mainly comes from my own cultures. i hardly eat "american" food (burgers, hot dogs, idek what other food would be considered american lmao). and shoes are never to be worn in the house!
american movies portray us in a generalized way so our personal cultures aren't always shown to the world, which makes it understandable why non-americans are surprised when we break a stereotype. whenever i see videos of non-americans learning about the culture here, i feel like they only think about what is mainly shown on tv...which would be white americans... there's so much diversity and so many cultures here but poc aren't represented enough. we're forced under a stereotype and it can sometimes feel like our identities dont matter, u know?
Wow I’m so glad we’re talking about false American stereotypes 🙏🏾
I’m an American living in Korea and I am mixed race and I have had so many misunderstandings from Koreans. They really don’t know a lot about many countries especially America. They believe a lot of things from movies and stuff. So I’m happy you made this video! Thanks Dave!
"Don't wet your Koreaboo pants" 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I love dave's comments at the top 😂😂😂
oh my the comment about prejudice against men who are too fashionable is so true!! i know a lot of guys who get treated like they're trying to show off or they're snotty by others just because they dress less casually.
with the shoes, i think it differs between households, i come from a Mexican (in America) household so they think that if you don't wear some kind of foot covering then you'll get sick. but my family also strives for cleanliness so we usually just wear socks when we're inside and leave our shoes on a rack by the door
Wonshik was so cute!! Hahaha I loved this video. So wholesome. 🥰
Absolutely loved the what’s American food question. As a Illinois man/mid western guy I do attribute burgers hot dogs and corn to being American. But it’s different everywhere which is fascinating.
yo don’t listen to those stupid comments they made about your appearance Dave you’re a good looking guy!! For real and you seem like a cool dude, love you videos keep it going 🙏
WonShik, your low tone english sounded very good. Confidence is key! :)
I am pretty sure he feels confident in real life:)
LOL in the beginning as a minority (latina) living in the U.S I felt pain in my soul watching the ask questions but what I realized is many people in the U.S are also incredibly ignorant about asian countries, particularly Korea. The only way to unlearn prejudice and stereotypes is to ask and be willing to take in new info. I want to applaud these guys because some people are ignorant and never try to escape their ignorance. At least they were willing to listen.
I will back Dave up. Nerd is not considered an insult anymore. As for taking off your shoes before entering a house, that depends on how you were raised and maybe familial qualities or ancestry-----it was something my parents insisted on as good manners and I grew up in Western New York (white, middle class, Ukranian heritage). Wonshik that was a good introduction. Great video.
Educating one Korean at a time. Their questions are so innocent and sweet.
At 14:10 it's actually a lie. Not EVERYONE puts their shoes on their bed or walks around the house with them. It depends on the person, some people do 🤮, and some like me don't. My shoes never see my bed (unless if I just bought them today and I haven't taken them out of their boxes). And I take my shoes off when I come into my house. I walk around my house completely barefoot and I like that
But in average do most people in US take off their shoes from their house or not ?
@@wakakabravo7998 but putting the shoes in the bed?? no one does that wtf
I take my shoes off right inside the front door. I just hate wearing shoes. I'd prefer it if everyone did it but I have a professional caregiver helper who comes 4 days a week to help me with my mom so I don't ask her to remove her sneakers.
@@biatch6992 not true, you know there's nasty af ppl who do.
@@ChristinaWoodall yes but those are as you said nasty people, not normal people LMFAO
I love that you are writing your thoughts about them in English without translation bc u know they are not gonna understand them or even watch the video
The lowest I’ve seen of soju in the states was like $4 and the highest was around $10
Where is that heavenly place? In NYC, the lowest is $8 and I've seen it go up to $16
this video is so funny, i'm not really familiar w korean cursing but spanish cursing is another level tho, im really enjoying this breaking stereoptypes vive, keep up the good work.
Hey Dave, next time you do a similar video like this. Try to invite some younger Americans, so they can be updated on recently changed. A lot of changed since you moved to Korea.
Awwww Wonshik is so cute 😊 There are a lot of girls who would love to go on a date with him. I think we just tend to be a bit more on the shy side.
I loved watching this Dave. It was interesting to hear what Korean people think of us lol
PS. Stop calling Wonshik a loser!!
Dave I loved this video so much!! Seeing you shoot with these guys was such fun content. They are hilarious, hopefully you guys can film more in the future.
I can't believe 17 minutes passed so quickly 😭 I loved this video!
"I heard that a trip to the hospital is more than $100 bucks in the States" bwahahahaha
that sweet sweet outro!!!
bringing a nostalgic feel of playing MMOs in the 2000s
also, that left&right bombs directed at Dave...that's just endured(read: torturous) consequence of having a rowdy bunch with an introvert 😂
OMG I freaking love this channel, the editing is sooo perfect and colorful, the videos are funny every time AND interesting.
And because of the insight into Dave's private life... I mean Yeah he's deciding what we gonna see but still I think drinking a beer and talk about some things would be sooo cool !😁
7:20
People still tell others they are losers and mean it as an insult, but 'losers' take pride in being one.
Awww Wonshik - is - indeed a little cutie nerd
Dave, in future, try collecting questions ahead of time and asking your American followers on social media about how things are nowadays.
America is changing very rapidly in the last few years!
Since you used Miami as an example, there are nude beaches here (Haulover) haha
This was really funny to watch 😂😂😂
