Wish I had bought a concept 3 instead of a Hydrow. You have to pay for the app to enable work outs which is BS. The machine is quality but everything else bites. I’d love to be able to see what you see on the concept 3 screen. Thanks for a great row. You’ve got a great way about you.

Hey brother, I’ve been following your work outs for a while now, I think about four months. First off they have been excellent! Secondly, they have helped me both physically and mentally. I am an Iraqi war veteran, retired from the military now. I don’t like to take too much time telling people about it, especially on any type of social media platform. However, I just listened to this work out today, and like everyone else, I have been struggling in certain areas of my life due to stress, maybe post traumatic, I don’t know, kids, the world right now, Covid and everything else it’s been adding up a bit lately. I don’t want to ramble, but I do want to say to you, and for everyone to hear, that I appreciate your guidance, your thoughts on the north star, being able to control your life, not worrying about things you can’t control, and your positive outlook. The dark horse mentality you speak of has helped me. I feel great today, and I think about why you say often. Thank you Shane!

Well I went off the medication and three months later my A1c is 5.7 because of rowing with your awesome coaching. I’m 79, 5-3” and weigh 110 and I just crushed this routine. Hey Shane, Just a note of thanks. Long, long ago, I used the Concept 2 every once in while at the gym and never really concentrated on form, thought my form was ok, lol. Quit the gym a few years ago, did some research to determine the rower to buy and have not regretted purchasing the Concept2 Model D. I then searched youtube to learn to row better and watched some decent videos and some horrible videos then found Dark Horse. I started my home gym journey in Mar 2018 and rewatched numerous of your videos to fix some issues and row better. Well 2.5M meters down and and enjoying rowing more and more and using ergdata and the monthly challenges to track progress and figuring out when I can try to get a new personal best. Thanks for all your videos, passion and keep it coming. You are a breath of fresh air!

I've been rowing with Dark Horse 5x/week since December. Mostly this 20min workout, but also the 10 or 30 min. (I also watched several of the technique videos.) Question: I can't seem to get my split to improve. I've hit this plateau of 2:14 (at my best) to 2:20, and I can't seem to improve. Any suggestions from fellow strivers?
FWIW: I turned to this as I was learning to live with persistent post-acute COVID symptoms (aka long covid). My exercise tolerance plummeted, and especially weighted workouts would lay me out for days. (And I'm a fitness professional with 20yrs experience, so next level frustrating.) I turned to rowing to rebuild everything. These videos have brought me a long way physically (thank you Shane!) - but also psychologically as I've at least been able to do something even on my worst days. Formerly very active, the persistent profound fatigue and muscle weakness has been life-changing. If this speaks to you at all - give these videos a shot. Start where you are and do what you can. Good luck.

Hey bud -- you really are awesome. I have some dumb questions for you.
When you reference 5k meters, does that include your "warm up" or is that just the 20 minutes.
I bought my rower about a week ago and I've been doing this one every day. I hit the strokes/minute (if anything, I'm +1-2 strokes above you), but including the warm up, I'm at like 4400 meters (and maybe like 3800 without). C2, Damper @ 5. Is the bottom line that my form is just crap and I need to work on it for the next 20 years :) ?

I just did two sessions of this video back to back using a setting of 6 and then 10 for the second. I didn't get near a 5,000? The first 20 minutes netted me a 3450 meter and the 10 setting was a 3618. I'd really like to finish a strong 5,000 between a 20-25 minute time frame. Can you help me with this. I am 5'6". Your long body was hard to stay with..... I had to take more strokes.... Anyway, I appreciate the video. It was a nice change from staring off into space listening to my old playlist.

Trying to determine what I'm doing wrong. I set all the settings like Shane does, and I keep up with him row, for row, but he'll be at 1,000 meters, and I'll be at 600 meters. I go way in on my catch, and snap the handle in while leaning back at 2 o'clock. Is it the damper setting maybe? Of course, I'm 5'4" and he looks to be over 6 feet. Would that make THAT much of a difference?

Really enjoy the info in your videos. But (a) A bit annoy that ads pops up about every 3 minutes or so disrupting the flow and sometimes they can't before forwarded through. (b) All the programming in the beginning takes time out from the work out (I know of course some people want all that) but much easier to just set a timer a tension setting and stay with rowing with pauses and breaks. I have a Sunny Fitness . and the display screen is ridiculously grey and nearly illegible to read ..So I just set a timer and row. When I stopped dealing with all the ridiculous programming .. I actually got a better workout. What I do appreciate is watching form and pace. I also like to just watch rowing virtuals .. like Venice or Fjords of Norway and just row with some music on and my own routine. I love though thanks your videos that I'm to setting the resistance to 16 at the top and rowing 20 minutes with out a break. I can now do 40 minutes about 8 or 10 resistance too ... I see my arms and legs getting definition but so annoyed how hard it is to get off the little belly even though I eat plant based, don't smoke or drink. So hopefully daily consistency will finally get the stomach off. My energy is excellent though and I haven't even taken Western meds in over 20 years. So trying to add more ab moves into my work out. Thanks again.

great workout. a couple of questions.... 1) are you a port side guy? (can see in your hand position) 2) what are you setting your damper on the flywheel? I am pulling with you on this workout and there is no way I could reach 5000 meters like you did. And I'm a strong rower as well. =). 3). I notice your breathing and how you breath out loose-mouthed right before the finish, and a tighter mouth breath out before the catch. Why? I'm digging the breathing technique BTW.

I dont understand whats going on.
What is SR. Are you changing some setting?
    75% effort from what? Yourself?
Im looking to buy a concept 2 i was thinning about following along to your videos but not sure what youre doing other than rowing hard for 5 then slow for 1 minute then hard again

Thank you for these videos. You inspired me to get a rowing machine (cheap $120 used for now) and this is my first workout. Barely lasting 10 mins but I'll be stronger next time!

Okay, looking for some help here. I matched stroke for stroke at the same pace and I hit 3500. Am I missing something? Machine is on level 5 does that make a difference?

Shane, I love this workout but, you kill me when we are stretching the legs at the end and you say “get a drink if you would like”. I say “I can’t!” You just assume that I am as limber as you!😅

Great workout and I love the intensity changes! And your cool down at the end is a great way to end. I especially appreciate the motivational self talk you have there at the end too. "We can control the process but not the destination"

Is 90 minute rowing with a spm of 30 good? Lol I just started 2 weeks ago and I don't know if that's too much or not 🤷🏻‍♀️

I enjoying your instructive 20 minutes row but I wish you had Mention the damper what number to put it on as this is very important I am 92 years of age and been riding for many years and many people just put a damper on 10 which is quite wrong

I am so grateful to have found your channel! I would have been rowing incorrectly otherwise and I have learned so much from you! I am a beginner (started in late January with a Concept 2 rower) but am wanting to challenge myself more & more. I love having someone to follow and get advice and reminders consistently through my work outs! You rock!!

Do you have suggestion on how to estimate 75% and 90% exertion?
    Great workout. Thank you

It would be great if you displayed your monitor as you erg. This would help follow cadence and split.

This is a workout I'll do again and again. Easy to follow yet challenging. Love the warm up and cool down as well. I've been rowing for 3 months and learning so much from your videos. Thanks!
