  • One of the most challenging airports in Europe. Terrain precludes an approach using conventional navigation aids and flying straight in. A visual manoeuvre must be flown to align the aircraft with the runway during final approach. Additional complications occur due to Madeira island being in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and therefore being subject to strong winds. These winds blow across the terrain causing turbulence and up and down draughts creating a bumpy and unpredictable final approach.
On this occasion, strong winds from the north create a challenge for the crew to keep the aircraft on the correct flight path for landing.
