  • Jon has researched the major differences between basic "waiver" motorcycling course curriculum and the skills riders potentially outgrow quickly. Coaches and experienced riders on any type of motorcycle may be interested in understanding the techniques taught in basic motorcycling courses that become somewhat obsolete for experienced riders. This one has to do with the mantra of no braking or use of brakes in the curve.

thank you for talking about it!
I’ve tried to become a CSMP instructor recently.. didn’t go through just because i don’t agree to what (or how) they teach curtain things. Things like “turn in, and start applying throttle to rest of the turn” - it is technically correct, but it very very simple explanation, lacking any details (imo), which doesn’t help safety either.. It is scary to look how students going by adding throttle and lean at the same time - but you can not say anything, because it’s not how it is in the card.

The basic state endorsement waiver courses are a good place to start coaching and can be very rewarding. You have to go into it with the attitude that you can’t put 10 lbs of dirt into a 5 lb bag. From there you can expand into coaching advanced or next level skills. Thanks for the comment.

I've been watching these as they're released, but do they have the same disclaimer about the waiver course each time before covering the topic in the title?

Yes, unfortunately. I normally wouldn't do this. But if someone just sees one w/o they may be more likely to leave some sort of negative comment. You can watch the longer version of the whole talk which I posted on my channel first, and stop when you like and go back to it. That way you'd be able to avoid that. Thanks for the post.

Hey there. I usually trail brake, but lately I have stumbled on the following technique and I wonder what you think about it: I trail brake, but get on the throttle while I'm still on my front brake (1 light finger). This allows me to introduces only one change at a time instead of 2 (stop braking & start throttle). I also feel as though I can keep the front suspension compressed just a bit longer this way. Thoughts? Any downsides for using the front brake while accelerating?

This is totally fine. The main idea is to control your speed 100% of the corner. If this helps you do that go for it. Thanks for the comment and enjoy the ride!
