- The key to quitting sugar is understanding the 5 things in your way: Your brain, environment, habits, gut and (maybe) friends.

Diet and health has always been a big topic as of recently, especially with the number of overweight and obese people with diabetes increasing. While there is a bit of a fight between low carb and high carb, the thing that deserves the most attention is quitting sugar, as cutting out refined sugars and processed foods is the most sure-fire way to improving health and regulating weight. The mindset and approach of really understanding how and why bad habits like this develop can be applied to all sorts of things (stop smoking etc )
0:00 The "Why" is important

3:19 No Sugar does NOT mean No Happiness

6:54 Deconstructing bad programming

Kaitlyn Tylar the music behind the pictures of the hamburger makes me want to never eat one again...he’s playing like horror music in the background. Maybe it’s just because I am a music freak but the music was upsetting when it was before something like junk food. I think that is what the point was. To mix something we see as great with upsetting sounds makes the things we’re seeing less appealing. In my opinion.
I learned this from an elder so o hope it helps some body : never “quit” anything , once you tell your self you quit something you become stressed . You don’t quit smoking cigarettes you “stop” smoking cigarettes . That’s the key to the start of quitting , it’s not the entirety but it’s a great starting tip !
every time someone tells me not to think something i just think it anyway. like when you want to go to sleep, people say not to "expect" to fall asleep but i can't not do that. i can tell myself all i want that i'm not quitting i'm just stopping but i'll still have that one opinion in the back of my mind
@@samdoesstuff4924 The secret is not to not think of quitting but to think of the alternative instead. So instead of saying "I quit sugar" or "I shouldn't think of sugar" you just say "I live healthy now" and then you just focus on the healthy lifestyle and as a side effect you don't eat sugar anymore.
Maybe this analogy helps: "If you want apples, don't focus on the apples. Focus on nurturing an apple tree and you get apples as a consequence."
Focus on a healthy life and you will live automatically without sugar as a consequence because your focus is completely involved with health, meaning, you don't have to not think about sugar anymore because you are already ignoring it as it was never on your mind in the first place.
So true.
What?

since being on keto, when walking down aisles in the supermarket, I've started to unconsciously ignore a lot of the food as if they aren't even food, because I already know all the sections I can't purchase from, so it's easier to not be tempted by them because I've learned to not even see them as something that's possible for me to get

I just go the perimeter of the store (produce on side, meat another, dairy the other) and then just go in an aisle to get cooking oils

I decided to quit sugar and gosh i felt cranky for 2 weeks, developed fever, considered going back to it, but thank heavens i had the strength to pull through. I feel so great not eating junk food anymore, i get my treat from fruits and dark chocolate. It is truly a great lifestyle.

Everything that feels great can lead to an addiction. There are only two options to deal with it, moderate consumption or total abstinence. And moderate consumption is definitely harder than total abstinence.
and if you cant quit sweets. Only eat sweets you made yourself. That way you'll have to put in effort to get your reward. And by making sweets from scratch you can make sure no werid stuff is added in.
Same goes for salty snacks. Craving chips? Make them.
that's great advice, because I'm so lazy to cook that I'm not just gonna eat anything after all
Yup! I agree! Using natural cane sugar is such a great way to ensure you're having an unrefined, simple sugar. Taking control of one's diet is so empowering.
Thanks for the great advice!!👍💕
I agree I make chocolate avocado truffle balls with açaí protein powder so I feel fuller and still get my sugar kick.. one or two balls a day is how I keep from literally binging on sweets all day and I either eat it as a treat in day time or dessert after dinner and I don’t eat after 7p

Jade Damboise Rail Way to go! I'm getting there! I've been trying to avoid the cake🍰 and grab an apple🍎 instead!😁
Or a peach or some berries! Yum!
Try replacing the dessert with something that feels similar. For dessert I will often have a little bowl of sesame butter sweetened with glycerin and add hot melted butter. Sometimes I add flavoring too. Adds fat, tiny bit of sweetness and mouthfeel. So when I think about desserts and then remember that I can have my sesame butter, it makes me feel better and crave the sweet less. I'm guessing a small bowl of whipped cream would do the trick too.
Jade Damboise Rail You can always have some dark chocolate or fruit. Mandarinas or oranges are great for helping breaking down meat/dark meat, I’ve heard.
Omar Abdul-Malik DHEd, MPAS, PA-C Congrats! If you had cake in front of you and you went for apple, wow. You deserve a standing ovation and a metal!
I went sugar free, no processed foods, and low carb 11 months ago after I had a gut yeast infection. I lost a pound a week for 10 weeks straight. I have not been sick a day for 11 months despite everyone else in my family getting colds and the stomach flu. I feel great at 56 years old and have dropped from a 34" to a 32" waist. I really believe that the "middle age spread" is mostly due to the sugary American diet. Thanks so much for the video.
Omg thank you for this comment. I share the same thoughts as you on this.
I am eating much less sugar now then before. Now everytime there is birthday at work, and people bring cakes from bakeries, I cannot even take a taste. These cakes have so much honey, syrup, etc in it I find it hard to digest. Its so overpowering I cant eat it. So longer you are off without it, then more clearily you taste how much sugar there is
Me too, I can’t eat cakes or sweets that I haven’t made myself, and those are sometimes hard to eat😅
Yeah I like making my own cakes, I can bring down the sweetness level and bring out the actual flavor like chocolate

Thank you kind sir..
I recently noticed that Windsor brand table salt has these listed ingredients: "Salt, Calcium Silicate, SUGAR, Potassium Iodide." I don't recall in previous years common table salt containing sugar. I just thought this might be the best place to share this. Sugar IS in nearly everything packaged... and of course, thank you for the great videos!
So they put sugar into salt - this is a new level of ridiculousness 😅

Glad you mentioned how fruits and berries are healthy because they are fiber-bound. Try eating more than a couple of apples, you likely won't be craving more apples, or sugar.
Not only that, but the sugar in fruit is glucose, whereas the sugar in soda and other processed foods is high fructose corn syrup. Your body digests these very differently and glucose is typically better for your long term health.

The real issue:
You have to cook all of your own food.
This is time-consuming,
I'm not gonna lie!
you have the choice between well prepared food in restaurants, there are even healthy fast food places popping up, but most of these are costly. Then there are services that ship the meals right to your door every day. Also quite pricey. Or you develop a new hobby. I mean, there was a time when making and cooking food was done out of necessity because there weren't so many places to grab food at. I'm from a rural area and if you didn't want to circulate in the same two restaurants and same two fast food restaurants you better learnt how to cook for yourself and actually enjoy the process. Also, there are hundreds of one pot recipes, 15 minute meals etc. to find online.

@@stephaniemitchell8509 absolutely true, and I am lucky enough to have the space for and a freezer, but not every student has. Agreed! Awesome advice but not so easy to accomplish if you are an addict. :) That requires to take control on the brain.
You also have to ignore all of the people around you like your friends and family who still think that sugar is a normal part of the diet. That part can be hard.

This is so interesting. You can actually notice that in periods that you have eaten desserts over at friends or whatever, you actually start craving it at home as well. Wether in times where you don't consume sweets or desserts for a while, you stop thinking about it entirely!

As a type 1 diabetic, I "accidentally" found out that keeping a food diary that you update on the go, and not after the fact, keeps me from over eating or eating things in larger portions than I intended. I weigh the food, calculate the carbs and take the required dose of insulin for the food - now I know exactly how much I will eat. I can't eat more than this, because I have dosed my insulin for the meal I'm eating, and if I want more, I have to go through the entire cumbersome process all over again (something I'm usually not inclined to do).
Maybe non-diabetics could start a similar routine without actually injecting insulin, of course? Weigh the food, calculate some macronutrient (like carbs) and write it down and then eat. And start this process over if you want seconds - it keeps you mindful of what and how much you eat. :)

Thanks I’ll try it out!
Have you considered that the only reason we need the insulin is for food that have carbs or sugar in them ? Suppose we stopped eating those foods, afterall, the body has no need of sugar or carbs, none, there is no essential carb and the few part of the body that need some sugar have sugar made for them by the body itself. so, then there is no more need for insulin, right ~?
yes, getting a food journal app that calculates macronutrients and keeps track of your calories can help tremendously. adapting your method for non-diabetics might look like planning the day's food in advance in the app, or planning your portion before you eat it and recording it in the app. It's not as high stakes of course, but it's an idea. I've used MyPlate (nospon lol) for just a week just to record and analyze my meals, and it's extremely insightful.
Na you can just do it. We'll enjoy not having diabetes and just eat a little bit healthier but not alot just to feel better about ourselves.
Sugar is in almost anything nowadays, it's really tough to avoid it
"this is the fight that's worth fighting" I really needed to hear that thank you
Great work thank you... I'm on month 4 of a keto diet.. Blocked out all processed sugars and dropped a ton of weight. Never felt so good.. I'm at war with sugar for the rest of my days, cheers.
geggs1 keep it up, my mom just lost 35 pounds and completely reversed her type 2 diabetes by going keto and intermittent fasting. In just 6 months
when i decided to cut down on sweets, i literally cried I felt so sorry for myself. how pathetic is that???
not at all, you're completly justfied to feel like that. most of everyone else does too.
Same, but it's nothing to be ashamed of. It happens to some people when they experience a sudden change in their lifestyle. It just seem so surprising at first and hard to control that it causes people to react in some type of way(in this case crying).
I'm so glad you spoke about the bliss point, when I was off the sugar I also stopped basically everything store bought cos they all had sugar in them, horrifically annoying
The key to quitting any addiction is to find healthy substitutes which give you as much pleasure. (e.g., substitute sweet fruits such as Envy apples for processed sugar).
A possibly video topic could be fecal impaction, abdominal distention, and how it affects you mentally. Oh or how a low fiber diet affects you.
Al P I'd like to hear more about these subjects as well.
I for one think that all graphs ever should from now on have in the background a squirrel munching on some nuts.
That would make my day better.
i quit sugar for 3 days i felt so nauseated and felt fevered but eventually got over it
Hope you are better now...Have fruits..
This break down is brilliant! I’m so glad I found this channel!
I found zero effort to cut out food with added sugars. no cravings. I think it helps I ate relatively healthy before so maybe a gradual approach might also work for some. going much higher fat is also a huge help. I lost all my excess weight which was only a few KGS in a couple of weeks though since I upped fat, cut sugar and reduced grain consumption. it also doesn't have to be an all or nothing thing. every few weeks I might have a really nice piece of cake or something and it is really special and savored. I save my occasions of sugar to be really intentional, rare and high quality foods, not junk.
I got hooked on the white stuff (sugar) back in the 90's
This channel deserves all the view - so informative and helpful. This video was made 5 years ago and I have still learned so much.
This channel is a goldmine of knowledge! Thanks for your service! 👍
did anyone else completely lose focus on what he was saying when the legend of zelda music came on and you were getting blasted with nostalgia?
yes, that exactly happened to me
what cheats you talking about lol ocarina of time didnt have any unless you had a gameshark
Yes! Lmfao. I had to stop and listen to make sure I wasn't crazy!
What's zelda
I lost mine when the boss music for Donkey Kong Country came on.
At the beginning of this year I quit sugar, and after a while I hated it! I felt happy and lost a bunch of weight, but ever since the holidays have come around everything has begun to change, and I’m so sick of it, I feel super guilty and I’m already gaining weight again, so I really hope this video helps!
I watch your sugar informative videos every week to strengthen my resolve to cut back for my health, as well as my sons. Thanks for educating me and therefore helping to create a substantially healthier diet for my 3 year old and I!
thank you for taking the time to make this!!
I'd like to learn more about the 20% of store-bought food without added sugar. ✌❤🌎
When it comes to processed food, there's very little; generally it's organic, also used as a baking ingredient, or unflavoured. Yogurt (unflavoured), oatmeal (baking ingredient, or organic cereal mixes), bread (only some, usually organic) and some "New Age" snack foods like Smartfood Popcorn are examples. You still need to read the labels as generally only a few options of the product line have no added sugar. Eg, Smartfood Sea Salt or White Cheddar popcorn doesn't have sugar while the Caramel obviously does, so does the Gouda and Chive, etc.
Savory foods are also less likely to have added sugar. I've noticed some pasta sauces do not have added sugar, plus hummus usually doesn't depending on flavour. Sweet pepper, hot pepper, garlic, pine nut, and artichoke I think were generally safe. Does depend on brand somewhat.
It's called whole foods and it comes with only one ingredient.
Those are the aisle away from the center. So all vegetables and meat section. If you want no added sugar you got to make your own
@@TheInsomniaddict I hate to whine, but it is impossible to avoid processed foods when you are physically disabled and cant cook.I get a carer to help me batch cook, but there is only so much len til stew i can handle. Im in a rather gluttonous environment atm!
@@zakwood3094 I'm not disabled, just lazy, and I've overcome this hurdle by cooking large meals/casseroles at one time, then storing/freezing portions individually. Having homemade frozen breakfast bakes/quiches and frozen dinner casseroles is wonderful. I know every ingredient in them, and I feel amazing. I make them ketogenic, so far losing 65 lbs in the last 5 months, no exercise required.
The analogy with quitting smoking is apt and the importance of understanding how one won't be giving up anything useful by quitting smoking or sugar cannot be understated. I really tried for a long time to quit smoking but never succeeded until I came to believe that quitting is a 100% gain, no losses involved. I quit cold turkey but kept some nicotine patches on hand in case some kind of craving seemed too great. After a day or two I knew I had beat the addiction and threw my patches in the trash. The relief of quitting was so great that I cried. I haven't touched a tobacco product since but I do occasionally refresh what I learned about the addiction and its effects. Quitting processed sugars is similar but much easier and it is videos like this which provide the knowledge needed develop the frame of mind which makes quitting easier.
I’ve watched this video
at least 10 times the past year. Really made a difference in my health.
Thanks for making it :)
Thanks for your amazing content! I think this channel is worth subscribing so much more than almost any other on youtube, just because it provides you with really precious information about health and nutrition which is being hidden by the food industry!
I appreciate the effort you put in to make these videos so that more and more people will have awareness of their eating habits
Just keep going with these vid’s!
Once again, excellent. Thank you. Just became a Patron.
I just saw - Thanks a lot!!
I wonder if it's possible to find a drug that makes you hate sugar.
Crack would make u hate everything especially ur self.
There is, sort of. In one of his videos he mentions a drug that blocks the reward for sugar. Unfortunately in the trial it was found that it also blocked all rewards, so they became depressed and several committed suicide.
Xyla Not gonna lie, they had us in the first half
LSD OR MUSHROOMS
Keto lifestyle. You lose your emotional attachment towards food and you control when you eat you don’t let food control you. Combined with some intermittent fasting It’s pretty amazing.
This is how I quit sugar:
I quit sugar.
Do u have a video?
Hahahahahahahahahhahaha!!!!

Raudavatn me too.
Precisely
Props to you for this video. Well done video and well received!

THIS is what I've been waiting for! Thumps up.
wow i quit smoking 5 years ago thanks to Allan Carr's book. i highly recommend that book!
Me too! Amazing book for which I am forever grateful. And nicotine and sugar comparison is so on point.
This is just it. You've just explained it so well.
"Have you ever had a soda and think, wow I'm so full I'm gonna have a small lunch?"
Me: Yeah, actually-
Him: Me either. *Moves on*
Me: w-wait
Ikr? I ate less after drinking a glass of Coke Zero, I wanted less sugar and my stomach is full from the liquid so I ate less solid food as well.
Liquid stay about 30 minutes in the stomach, wow how "full" you must feel
@Judging Budgie it's legit zero. a bunch of chemicals, sure, not quite as healthy... but it's what it says it is..
Soda makes me not feel as hungry bc it stops the stomach rumbles for a long time for some reason
For a long time i hated to eat, so i drank like 3 cans a day and NEVER ate. I stopped around half a year ago and gained 30 pounds lol
yeah same. i wouldn't say i get full from drinking things before i eat (pop, juice, whatever), but i have to watch how much i drink or i won't be able to finish my whole meal. it's actually quite annoying sometimes because i'm trying to gain weight.
Great vids man! Your narration is just right for interpretation. I will share with everyone.
Brilliant video!! Just the motivation I needed to keep going - I'm only on day 3 of quitting sugar, but want the change to stick. Thanks for a great video :)
Hey man I just wanted to say that I love your work, your research is insightful and spreading this information is beneficial to man-kind. Thanks bruh.
best educational channel, keep up the good work bro.
One thing I've always wondered is do people really feel _guilty_ for eating sugar? I mostly just feel stupid when I succumb to the desire of eating sugar
Thinking about it it might make sense; if your decisions lead to someone else breaking their diet and you feel guilty for that maybe feeling guilty for doing the same to yourself is 'natural' even though potentially harmful to mental well-being
I do see what you were saying I think, I was making the comparison between feeling guilt for hurting others and feeling guilt for hurting yourself. I never really considered the idea of feeling guilt about hurting yourself before so it was just my way of making sense of it by comparing it to a feeling that maybe I do understand
Yeah I just feel stupid.
Simon Banks same here haha and regretful when the effects kick in
Nope. I don't buy into diet culture. I eat a balanced diet and exercise.
Your videos are some of the best on youtube, thanks for your videos.
I’ve been listening to this over and over again to help push through my cravings when I’m at my absolute weakest
👍
Awesome! Oh and make sure the Sauerkraut is UNPASTEURIZED. Most Sauerkraut IS pasteurized which cooks out all of the beneficial bacteria for the sake of longer preservation, which is insane because it is the whole reason for eating it. The same with honey. Pasteurizing honey cooks out all of the good stuff. :)
SpockBoy Try kimchi. It's basically fermented cabbage.
Ferments are so easy to make- sauerkraut, broccoli, carrots. Just about anything is fermentable and homemade is best!!
Nice touch adding the Metroid Prime music around the 6 & a half minute mark! Great video!
Thank you so much for making this video! This was really helpful.
Your videos are so informational. I really appreciate it. Subscribed!
