I decided to make this video after finally realizing that I feel better without caffeine when I stayed off coffee for several weeks. I noticed I was less anxious, less worried about smaller things and had a significant reduction in appetite.
One thing I try to stress here is that just because caffeine apparently gave me these different issues, you might not have them yourself. There is tons of individual variation in how caffeine affects people.

A couple people commented that coffee / caffeine *suppresses* their hunger rather than increase it like I was saying in the video. Actually, I agree with this. Actually when I was drinking coffee, I would set my intermittent fasting schedule to where the appetite suppressant "boost" of coffee would make it easier to get through those last 90 minutes of fasting. Yes, caffeine / coffee suppresses appetite at least temporarily.
However, *in my experience* (as stressed in the video, different people react very differently to caffeine and coffee), what seemed to be happening was that my normal appetite when coffee wore off was higher than usual. Though I did experience the appetite suppressant effect right after I drank it. At least for me, coffee isn't a free anti-lunch. While I do get a temporary appetite suppressant boost, the downside is that I have to pay for that with interest at a later point with a bigger appetite.

_“my normal appetite when coffee wore off...”_
See, that was your first mistake- you let the coffee wear off!
You’re supposed apply decremental doses of coffee to your esophagus in regular intervals so it never fully wears off.
Start by timing how long the effects of 1 strong cup lasts, then commit to drinking a new cup 15-20 minutes before the last one wears off. Constant caffeination is key!

I'm not sure if anyone else has made this comment but I noticed that you said you were fine drinking coffee with milk but still found straight coffee bitter. Perhaps it might actually be the milk if anything as regular full-fat milk has a lot of fat which could explain the weight decrease when you stopped and not feeling hungry after coffee temporarily.

Coffee causes hypoglycemia... This causes tiredness and the need to eat...
This can be avoided by not drinking sugarless coffee... It's ok to add sugar to coffee... But milk is not necessary... Drinking milk with coffee is what causes the obesity....
If you are diabetic however... You should totally avoid coffee.
Also hypoglycemia is also responsible for the jitters in most cases... By adding sugar to your brew you can avoid this... Too much caffeine however will still cause jitters if you are a slow metaboliser... Just like how some people can't handle as much alcohol as other people... Like me 😅 I can't handle much alcohol being an indian but I can definitely handle my coffee ! But I do get jitters if I drink it without sugar and that's because of hypoglycemia...
      I hope I was informative.

I've been on meds for anxiety and that basically knocked it totally out. Regardless of how much caffeine I have during the day it doesn't affect my mental health now even in larger quantities. It just gives me energy. Now getting acclimated to the medication OMG talk about jittery. Coffee never did that to me lol. Guess it's all about how people work isn't that weird? Without the meds if I had more than one caffeinated drink I did notice a more anxious day but with them it really doesn't matter. I dunno I'm Hella grateful for the meds lol.

i literally just read a study that said caffeine reduces hunger.
"Appetite suppression. Caffeine may reduce feelings of hunger and your desire to eat for a brief time."
"Calorie burning. Caffeine appears to increase energy use even when you're at rest. It stimulates thermogenesis - one way your body generates heat and energy from digesting food."
I found that to be much more in line with how I feel after caffeine. It's crazy how it can have such a different effect on people. For you, it seems to make you gain weight, for me, it makes me lose weight.

    • @luisoncpp
      @luisoncpp 3 роки тому +19

The appetite suppression is not because of the caffeine, it has more to do with the coffee itself. You can have the same effect from decaffeinated coffee and missing the effect completely from caffeine pills.
About the calorie burning, there doesn't seem to be a consensus. Some studies claim that it helps and other that it doesn't.
It also depends on when you take the caffeine, in the morning the cortisol is useful but in the late afternoon/night it could be detrimental.

This is SO important. I'm young(ish) (29). I used to drink one regular cup of normal coffee a day for years, nothing special. It never made me jittery, anxious, or anything like that. One night I experienced SVT (supraventricular tachycardia, you can look it up) and had to go to the hospital. Since then, I had continuous chest pain over my heart and palpitations daily. I saw a cardiologist, asked if coffee could possibly be the culprit, and he said absolutely not because "one cup of coffee a day wouldn't cause my symptoms, and coffee is even cardioprotective." Long story short, I had a CT scan, an echocardiogram, countless EKGs and urgent care visits. All normal, no answers. FINALLY decided on my own to quit coffee entirely, which was hard because I really loved my one cup. Sure enough, every single symptom VANISHED. No more chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath. I now drink decaf coffee everyday (sadly) as I love the taste of coffee. If I ever have even a sip or two of regular coffee, chest pain and palpitations come right back.
I just want to echo WIL in saying that everyone reacts differently to caffeine, and you know your body best. Plus, I definitely had no idea how much more relaxed/less anxious I'd be after quitting. Drink wisely!

Then I started getting massive heartburn and histamine issues at night, it would wake me every 20 minutes for the entire night. Anyway eventually I cut the glass of red and the symptoms disappeared. I had a glass of red last weekend, maybe 3 years after cutting it out, and sure enough I was awake most of the night in pain. As a published researcher and PhD in the biotech, I agree with your findings:
+ Short-term coffee is an appetite suppressant and has a positive effect on anxiety. (BTW Smoking also decreases appetite, yet there are major negatives associated with smoking.)
+ Long-term adaption to coffee (and caffeine in general) has the opposite effect increasing adenosine neuro-receptors, evidence does point to coffee/caffeinated sodas as a major factor in global obesity.
    Summary
Coffees AND caffeinated sodas (even diet) everyday are too much caffeine. Most of us need to modify our behavior. For 2 months, try substituting decaf coffee on a daily basis, with a double shot of real coffee once a week. Save your caffeine to peak performance for a race, important meeting or deadline.

Time for an anecdotal comment. I used to enjoy brewing my own coffee at home, but unfortunately I’m one of those people that has an early morning job and can’t get to sleep before 1am despite my efforts. So for the best part of my life I sacrificed my morning brew at home to have more time getting ready for work. Since I don’t like spending too much money at coffee places, I skipped having coffee outside of my house or at least tried reducing it to maybe 1-2 espressos a week. Fast forward until a couple months ago when the lockdown started and I was drinking half a litter of coffee every day. First my circadian rhythm was thrown off by never seeing sunlight, then I started going to bed at 3am and getting up for early web meetings at 8am and of course coffee was my go to drug. I got progressively stressed out while doing my job, I put on a lot of weight and I couldn’t understand why every time something didn't go according to plan I was enraged. I couldn’t longer exercise because my own sweat started giving me a skin allergy, can you believe that? Long Story short, I quit coffee(not caffeine) around a month ago. I’m only sticking to Mate which is an Argentinian tea, a liter of water per 40-50grs of yerba mate. I’m feeling better already. I’m more focused, I don’t get such exaggerated physical responses when things don’t go my way. I’m eating better, I’m less hungry. It’s overall easier to be the person I try to be (does this make sense to anyone? Anyway, thanks for reading :)

This may not have been from the caffeine part of coffee but rather 1 of the hundreds of chemicals within coffee. Coffee is actually a really complex substance with many different compounds within it, and some of those compounds vary based on the type of coffee, where its grown, how its processed, etc. People focus a lot on the caffeine coffee has but as a result not much is known about how these other compounds affects the body, so its possible you were having an adverse reaction to one of these compounds which is why switching worked for you.

@to that objectively weighing the risks of any compound is what is important, not all-out abstinence. you seem to have a strong stigma attached to any daily use of any compound. for something like coffee, the risk and negative effects are so incredibly negligible for some people, that it doesn't matter if they're dependent on coffee / caffeine. really, objectively, what's the WORST thing that could happen to someone who has a minor dependence on coffee for their entire life? is it really necessary or at all helpful to deem all who are okay with dealing with that dependence as "weak?"
that's the same school of thought used in D.A.R.E. programs that INCREASE people's likelihood to use illicit compounds. abstinence and stigmatization is NEVER GOING TO OBJECTIVELY HELP THOSE AT RISK OF DEPENDENCE AND ADDICTION. objective evaluation of all potential risks of ANY COMPOUND is the ONLY way to keep people safe, not putting people down for having substance abuse issues. and beyond that, objective evaluation of the risks and benefits of coffee is extremely subjective, as shown in this video, which demonstrates that there is no broad generalization for users being "weak" for coming to the conclusion that coffee dependence is fine.
I've been drinking coffee on and off my entire life. the idea that there is ONE answer for all people is idiotic. I don't have ANY of the symptoms listed in this video, and many are in the same boat as me. no one is saying daily consumption of any compound doesn't come with physiological changes. anyone who is remotely familiar with the effects of coffee knows this, and realizes that any perceived negative effects may not be present for all people, and thus, carries no risk for a lot of individuals.
Imagine generalizing any group of people based upon your own beliefs and stigma. that's a WAY weaker move than having a cup of Joe each morning.

I didn't notice any difference in my sleep quality too and it took about 6 weeks to really feel like I don't need coffee do be productive. Another effect was that I was getting tired faster when exercising. My conclusion was that it comes with positive and negative effects, and I do miss that special time of the day when I have my coffee with my favorite mug, however, it is not worth for it's dependency to be productive and the anxiety it gives me.

While it is true that coffee increases cortisol levels it also inhibits other chemicals within the body which "suggest" fat loss, in turn it isn't so surprising that drinking coffee and weight gain aren't correlated, and after you've mentioned clearly that no correlation has been found you then run around it to suggest such correlation, it feels to me like the point is forced.

As a regular caffeine drinker for the last 6 or 7 years, who has also experimented with significant breaks of varying lengths, and has also experimented with different nootropic compounds that both enhance and diminish effects of caffeine, what I've concluded is this: caffeine can have vastly different effects on people as a result of individual body and brain chemistry. Prolonged caffeine use can and usually does affect things like short term memory, intrinsic motivation capability, sleep quality, and even may be have some link to increase in depression. Caffeine is a drug, and like any drug, daily, long-term will have effects on us, and for some people those effects can be more negative and debilitating than for other people. And as such, ceasing caffeine use abruptly can also introduce some temporary negative effects. For me those mainly tend to be in the form of severe depression and lack of motivation, difficulty maintaining focus, and difficulty staying awake during the day. HOWEVER, I have found that after a while, these symptoms disappear. But that "while" can be a very, very long while, longer than you may think. I've heard of people who stopped taking caffeine almost a year ago and still don't feel quite normal. I think we underestimate just how much daily use of a drug can affect brain chemistry long term. I am not advocating for anyone to quit caffeine, but I think the effects of caffeine have been understated for far too long, and people should be more educated on what this drug can do to a person. All this said, at this time, I am still using caffeine on a daily basis, but have tried to keep my use to around 200mg per day or less. And man oh man, is it difficult to quit, even if I really want to. Caffeine has got to be the most easily obtainable, readily available drug in the history of humanity. And as any addict knows, keeping your DOC out of sight and out of mind is key to overcoming any addiction.

yeah that makes no sense since coffee has almost no calories and has appetite supressive effects, milk in the other way is a very caloric and carb dense drink that trigers insulin alot depending on how much lactose has in it, the less fat has in it the more the spike on insulin.
