This song is done in a country reggae beat. It showcases the higher & lower ranges of both Tim Foust & Avi Kaplan. That last note of Tim is impressive with how low he goes, but more impressive is how long he sustains the note. On the "Sing Off Show" that Home Free won in 2013 Tim goes even lower on this song "Ring Of Fire" & he impressed the judges so much that they gave them a standing ovation. And Adam Rupp once again was stellar in his vocal percussion.
Yes, Home Free did this on the Sing Off and had to make it different so they came up with this version which is great. It is a kind of calypso/reggae beat. So well done. Avi (from Pentatonix) has a great voice. (The a cappella groups are friends). That was Tim of Home Free who did the last note. He can go really low. Amazing
You would probably really like the live version of this from the Sing-Off, too. There’s something about it that is more raw and authentic than the studio version. I love both versions, but for very different reasons. Thanks for giving them another chance with the Man in Black!
Ring of Fire in a more modern, somewhat reggea-like version, but still respecting the original. 4years ago this was the first video I saw/heard from Home Free. I got there because I was listening to Pentatonix at the time and Avi was my favorite. Immediately there was something that drew me to Home Free. From then on I followed them and after I think 2 videos I was a real Home Fry. I hardly follow PTX anymore. Avi still does, because Avi Kaplan and Home Free let me feel music and not just hear it. Their great harmonies, the unbelievably good beatboxing/vocal percussion and of course that incredible deep bass that makes the ground vibrate and your speakers explode.
We are used to seeing reactors be speechless on their first encounter, but to see an experienced HF reactor be struck speechless is a treat. As others have suggested, you might go watch the Sing Off, HF's third appearance where they "premiered' this version - including the judges comments.
After watching your Folsom Prison Blues reaction, I was expecting you not to like this. And I would totally have understood that. But you surprised me. And that's a good thing. Glad you liked it. Not my favorite, but that's OK, because there are so many others.
Generally speaking, I used to half freak out when anyone would change an absolute classic. UNTIL I learned to open my mind and quit my bitchin' until I'd given the new one a real chance. Now as long as it's Home Free, I don't even question it. They are always mindful of the music and the message. But the ones that they change up, they still remain respectful, even if they kind of spoof the original like in All About That Bass, or the Countrifried Pop medley. Great reaction!
JC's original had a more mexican country/ fiesta sound. But changing the sound to country/ calypso/ reggae was a perfect solution, because it fit the song. I can absolutelly hear the similarities between the two, but also the difference. HF allways stay true to the original, even when they change either the speed, or the styles. You can allways regognize the original in their covers.
Glad you enjoyed this. I was worried it might end up in the "sacrilege" bucket for you along with their Folsom Prison Blues!! I reckon you're right, that the reggae dancehall treatment is *so* different to the original that it becomes its own new thing. Also, the way they start it off slow & sombre shows proper respect before they calypso-ize things. :)
I think for future reactions, if it's a cover of a song that is a standard and I don't immediately love it, I'm going to sit on it. My opinion on Folsom Prison Blues has changed quite a bit. Actually like their cover for the way they've made it their own and sound new. Might do a revisit video for it at some point but yeah, opinion changed through a few listens to it.
@@TheEclecticBeard Good for you.... you're a better man than me - anyone who's ever covered a Soundgarden song gets a stout "why would you even try?" from me!! LOL :)
@@badm0t0rf1nger That's one reason I'm going to hold onto them lmfao. That way if my opinion doesn't change, I can record an update edit and give further explanation after multiple listens. There's some songs that I'm sorry, you just can't veer from too far unless you well and truly make it so unique that it no longer sounds like the same song.
I can think of a few songs that have done the original version justice, ( imho mind you ), like: Pentatonix - The Evolution Of Michael Jackson, The Sound Of Silence, Hallelujah, Can't Help Falling In Love Home Free - The Butts Remix, Brothers In Arms, Ring Of Fire, Man Of Constant Sorrow, When A Man Loves A Woman, How Great Thou Art, Woman, Amen / Female, End Of The Road, Elvira VoicePlay - In My Room, Nothing Else Matters, Queen In 5 Minutes, My Mother Told Me, Daddy Sang Bass ......But yeah, when the original artist and work, are respected in the way these artists do, then they're doing the original artists and work, justice, ( but I've heard bad versions/covers of original songs too, and........no thank you very much, because if the original artists aren't respected, then they have no business in the.............well the music business/industry in the first place ). Ps! Now, here's a few that, are just fun to listen to, ( again, imho mind you ): VoicePlay - Hoist The Colours, Oogie Boogie's Song, If I Was A Rich Man/Girl, Grim Grinning Ghosts, In The Hall Of The Mountain King, This Is Halloween .......And if it's solos you want: Geoff Castellucci - Sixteen Tons, Ghost Riders In The Sky, Big Bad John, Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold, Take Me Home ( Country Roads ), Ain't No Sunshine, The Headless Horseman, The Bare Necessities, Monster Mash.
It's BLOODY FANTASTIC! New...yet somehow faithful! Go figure! Cheers from Oz.
Glad you liked this version. It helped them win the Sing off where Tim went even lower.
That’s homefree for you they do the song it justice and make it there own ❤✌🏼

Love this cover almost as much as the original

This is such an awesome cover. Home Free and Avi together make fire! Love your reaction!
They are so talented & between the deep voices of Tim Foust & Avi Kaplan they were fantastic.

💯
That's my favorite version
The Sing Off version is awesome!

I prefer the version from the sing off, I love the reggae beat they gave it x
I got big weird Al vibes from this
I think Johnny and June would have loved this version with a reggae beat to it I find it awesome
🔥🔥 I love this cover. They did it in the sing off and it was amazing live too
The live on the SingOff was even better than this one. Love Johnny Cash! The reggae beat is killer! Adam killed it!

The back and fourth bass tradeoff between Tim Foust & Avi Kaplan were fantastic, I think even Johnny is smiling at the upbeat cover of his song.
seriously, you've turned me into Home Free's number one fan lol so good
Well Johnny Cash did hurt by Trent Reznor (listen to the original) and he made it his own. I think Johnny would appreciate this for the same reason.
Folsom Prison Blues is great, too.

@Eclectic Beard, thy wibbling tis amusing in thy reaction to this song. Try Leo Morriachioli's version of Ring of Fire.
