I've got 11 ASE certs altogether. I took some of the truck and truck equipment tests. (more patches!) I am the ONLY tech at my shop with any ASE certifications. And yes, the highest paid tech at the shop. I think it shows general knowledge and commitment to a career in the automotive repair industry. I did it for personal pride at first. Getting my L1 was my goal. Now I recertify because I know I'll keep making more money.

Important...if you want to have an employer. Or, you could build your own customer base and give yourself a massive pay raise. I've had one customer in six years ask me about certification. Imho, agreed, do it for yourself. it's good to put yourself through the study and process, which forces you to learn things that you don't necessarily use everyday, but may come in handy. Or if simply you like knowing stuff.

How about for DIY people that want the expertise of a ASE Certification? I love working on my car, have a couple of thousand dollars worth of automotive tools and I would love to gain the technical expertise of an ASE Certified technicians. Test look relatively cheap and I doubt it has the complexity of a 3 level CFA certification which I have taken before. Thoughts?

Some shops specifically only look for those who are certified(where i live, every shop has to employ at least one master tech in order to operate). It also gives you hint as to the quality you might expect from that shop. I believe certs get your foot in the door, and your experience takes it from there.

@@derekdlick2516 The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence is an, "independent" non-profit organization. Independent organizations can't be mandated by law and neither can their certifications. That would render them no longer independent if the government mandated them. If the government required them by law, then that would be government promotion of that particular organization. What about people in the automotive industry that are certified or trained by auto makers? Do they are also need ASE certification? That makes no sense. Some type of certification is required to service air conditioning though.

Im ASE certified in 5 areas working on my last 3 for master. I disagree with you when you say "it doesn't prove anything with your abilitys as a technician". Matter of fact I would argue the opposite. Theres alot of guys who can flag hrs but dont understand how the systems they are working on function. They're called part eplacers. They dont know how perform hardly any diagnosis either. ASE test you on your ability to properly repair vehicles to standard, how the systems work, and how to diagnose them correctly. Now does it prove you have a ton of hands on experience? Not nessesrialy, but it does prove your competence and that you are capable of performing the nessary repairs needed for whatever issue and vehicle you are working on.

The l1 is something you should get. It shows that you can comprehend modern ECM,PCM systems and diagrams The new composite vehicle book came out in 2015 or 16. If your a diagnostician it’s a must.
The l1 isn’t about being a good test taker. It’s about understanding systems and diagrams. And how the systems work.

I think you’re right. Doesn’t mean you have the talent to go with it. But it does mean you are committed to learning and staying current in our field. Hvac, electricians, plumbers and others have to be licensed to work. Why not us? Just because you have a tool set doesn’t mean you should be repairing vehicles. Someone could be killed. But I’m glad we have something such as ASE. I go back to the NIASE days and was happy to participate.

I now work on trucks. My company gives a bonus, so I took the tests and became a Master Truck Technician. If your company pays for the tests and gives a bonus if you pass, and you won’t take the tests, it means you’re lazy. Those same guys that won’t take them are the ones constantly complaining about their pay, but they do the bare minimum

I'm doing it to help people out and help myself out financially by doing my own work I would love to do it as a regular job, but no one would hire me without that certification. Recently, I was thinking about going back into it, but I feel it's too late at the age of 48 to get my certification... I do other things for a living now but it's nothing that I love... I love repairing cars do you think it's worth it for me to go for it and study?

I agree FRM. Seen both sides. Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it pretty much.

Depends on where you work. My personal experience it didn't matter. I was Ase certified and when I walked in for the interview with my resume and all my aftermarket classes that I had taken. I was told straight out it doesn't matter. That was at a ford dealer mind you. So I worked there for about six months first month making a killing. Well guy's starting bitching and crying about my hours and I was making 10.00 hour with 2.00 a hour for every tech hour I turned. They cried. Well I got my paycheck one week and it was half of what it's suppose to be. I said something to my boss and he told me your not a master tech you should be lucky to have a job. Well I quit with a customer's car torn apart. I had my trailer hooked to my truck. I backed into my bay and loaded my box and cart. I made a phone call to a truck shop when I was leaving the dealer and I was hired over the phone starting at better money with a guarantee. Now I work on cars for fun and I work on fire trucks and dump trucks for a living. It all depends on where you work.

I had a very similar experience with a Ford dealership. And they wonder why they are short 10+ techs. I left and went elsewhere where my certs are sought after and appreciated and making a lot more money.

I'm actually starting at a new shop in 2 weeks that pays you $1/hr more for every ASE you get. I'm leaving from a dealership that really doesn't even want to send their people off to the manufacturer training. I'm a senior tech for this manufacturer and have taken all my only courses to be master, but have been waiting over 2 years for them to send me to the instructor lead training to be master, I'm 3rd highest paid in this shop and still can't pay my bills. My shop offered me less to stay than the independent shop did starting out with no ASE certs. I feel that ASE certs can be an important tool. I'm a little nervous going to this shop as it moves me from flat rate back down to hourly, but all of their techs are hourly, they've been around 30 years, 19 bay shop, 150 cars a day, and have a 4.9 google review. So we'll see how it goes. But great video as always!

I've never worked anywhere willing to pay for them, so I don't bother with it. My current boss was more worried about me being able to fix a car than a piece of paper in a frame. If they'd pay me for em? I'd be taking the tests tomorrow.

I think its really only helpful for lawsuits. Thats why dealerships and manufacturers are now asking for them.
Lemon law has caused a lot of frivolous lawsuits. Judges/jurors like credentials when you make your case.

Another benefit to ase is its recognized nation wide. Factory training is good but it is only with that particular car / truck manufacturer. If you go to work for a different brand they don't recognize your achievements

Agree that it shows dedication to the industry. It takes a good bit of time to go take and pass 8 test to be master certified. You can be good at taking test but if don't have some knowledge of the series of test your taking you will fail it.

Here in Australia we have no ASE we are either qualified mechanics or not. Unqualified guys just don’t seem to look for work in this industry I don’t know if that’s a problem or not in the US but because of that having just a standard qualification level works

What does a nearly 40 year old who’s contemplating a career shift do? I’m interested in this field to get into building race cars and working on race cars, but not very able to travel to the races with the family situation. Of course gotta start at the beginning, and yes I am pretty green. I do my own simple service work in my shop or driveway. But I’m not even calling myself a driveway mechanic as I basically just do fluids and brakes…
