Paul’s Tackle Reviews - Guru Aventus 4000 Reel - Worth the Money?

  • I look in detail at this reel. I show all the features and also compare it to a cheaper reel, the Preston Innovations Magnitude 420 reel. I look at what extra you get for your money and whether ultimately it is worth paying more for the Guru reel.

    Brilliant honest review Paul….. for £200+ reel I would want perfect line lay straight out of the box.

      Thanks for the good feedback. Agree re line lay, providing washers just allows a lack of precision in manufacture.

    Agree with you on line lay issues .I have 2 castizm 19 feeder reels and both needed washers to sort the line lay.Think this is where the big brands let themselves down.never had this with a Mitchell match .

    Thank you for taking the time to answer regarding the reel. I do all those things you suggest, but the line I was using was actually 0.16 (4lb) Matrix Horizon so it could have been that. Think I’ll try the Guru line. Keep up the good work Paul, I always look forward to one of your reviews. Thanks again, Glenn.

    A great honest review! I've used the Preston Centris 420 for a couple of years and think it's superb - the clutch is easily the best I've used. I've actually got a Magnitude to go on my 10ft Mini Carp but I've not spooled it up yet.
    BTW, I've written tackle reviews for a few mags in the past and I'm sure some of your comments on the reel wouldn't have made it to print - your unbiased reviews are probably worth more than the difference in price in the two reels you had there 👍

      Thanks for the good feedback. My independence plus the fact I buy stuff with my own money means I can give an unbiased opinion which, based on the comments I receive, is what people want. I’m going to get the new Shimano Aero XR 4000 when it’s released, test it and do a video review.

    Sorry you're wrong on the reel manufacturers . the preston centris for example is just a rebranded ryobi , Ryobi dont sell that reel in thE uk but it can be shipped in from some asian countries at half the price and it is identical in everyway , specs , materials etc . Also the guru reel is a just a an old now no longer made daiwa matchwinner reel witha spool from a tdm or tdx , isnt as good as a TDR but they are charging substantially more because it has the guru name on it , a huge waste of money

    Very interesting review. I would recommend the use of carbon drag washers. These are readily available on ebay for about £9. They absolutely transform the clutch on ANY reel!! All the best Peter.

    Another great video Paul, rare to see an honest, unbiased opinion, thank you. With all your reels, do you ever get line twist problems. Not the hook length, but the main line eventually twists and birds nests between reel and first rod ring. Thought it might be the line roller, but others don’t seem to have the problem??? Any ideas. Have Centris reel and using 0.16 on the waggler.

    • @paulstacklereviews1695

      Thanks for the good feedback. I rarely have problems like you say but I do some things which I think help avoid it
      - I now manually turn the bail arm over after casting (helps line management and avoids slack coming off the spool) both waggler and feeder
      - I play fish on the clutch, changed last year after 30 years backwinding. It means the reel handle can’t roll back and accidentally release some line
      - I don’t fish longer than 40m very often so don’t see the need to fill the spools right to the edge, reduces the chance of line coming off inadvertently
      - the lowest diameter line I use is 4lb Guru Pulse which is 0.18mm. I did try Matrix Hoizon 4lb which is 0.16mm and didn’t get on with it
      Hope this helps.

    Good review,reels are very subjective,no one suits all,with today’s engineering standards I think line lay for general use should be good to go out of the box,daiwa user myself,really like t.d.m’s,especially the quick drag system they feature…but bet not everyone does.

    Great review Paul . To be honest I would never buy Guru gear just because they're dearer than everybody else. I have a Shakespeare Mach 1 reel 3000 size for 13yrs and never a bother. I'm looking to buy the new Shakespeare reels that have come on the market lately. the best thing I have found from Guru is their EVA Fusion carryall set which looks good but price wise again very dear . MAP have 1 for half the price though not so many Items in the range .

      Thanks for the good feedback. I agree there appears to be an ‘orange tax’ on some items compared to other manufacturers. I bought a Shakespeare Superteam reel 5 years ago for someone getting back into fishing and I couldn’t believe how good it was for the price.

    Interesting review tbh your review was excellent the result did not surprise me at all, I couldn't justify paying that type of money on a repackaged Daiwa reel or any one else's my go to reel make is Shimano in my humble opinion no one make a reel like them that said I was given a Korum reel and to be honest it is brilliant so Prestons are very close, I don't like Daiwa reels as the ones I've had never lasted very long at all either the bail arm broke or something more catastrophic. So my suggestion is flog the Daiwa/Guru reel and buy the new Shimano and tell us if its any better than the one you will have sold. Cheers

    Great video Paul I looked at the Aventus and it is too heavy for me. I then looked at the Daiwa Tournament Pro. and l bought two of these. they are lighter feel as strong you get 2 x extra spools drag equal if not better and colour scheme looks the part.. I have two Centris reels which l love and these have push button spools everything l want in a reel. I use the Centris 520 reels for feeder and Tournaments for float fishing. Are the Daiwa's better than the Preston jury's still out but initial thoughts no for the extra money, Centris reels are plenty good enough for me.I must disagree with you about the Cadence reels the line lay on mine was abysmal 6.2: 1 was too fast for me even for float fishing l sold them on very quickly.

      Thanks for the good feedback. Im starting to think line lay on reels is a bit of a lottery, even with the washers to adjust!

    • @davidsmith2663
      @davidsmith2663 Рік тому

      @@paulstacklereviews1695 I didn't need to adjust my Tournament reels, l have a Daiwa Matchwinner which l removed a thick washer and added a thin one. l had to add a washer to my Centris. So as you say its a lottery. I will be watching for your longer term review to see if you think the Aventus a good buy.

  • @Enpassantful
    @Enpassantful Рік тому +1

    I agree, the guru is not a 200+ reel, the line lay is pants. I think Daiwa make the reels for guru. As for the drag, it is very easy to change the washers so you can make the drag as smooth as you like on any reel. I recommend Shimano reels, have a look at the oceanic 4000, they make excellent feeder reels, and half the price of guru reels.

    Glad you did this review because I have three 520 magnitude reels and was wondering what the spare plastic washer was to be used for that comes with the reels? @@davidsmith2663 cheers David for the advice, I have had a lot of trouble with line getting behind the spools, Preston seemed to think I overloading the spools but in 40 years of angling I have never had this problem with reels. Also one of the reels was binding when reeling big fish on the pellet waggler, it was on the hottest day of the year so not sure that had an impact ? I have used it since and it seemed ok. Will take a look at a Centris 👍
